No matter what a dev does to add progression people will find a way to equate it to levels. Bottom line, it's up to players to change their focus. The developer's job is to make games that capitalize on what players focus on. You're pointing the finger in the wrong direction
check out Wakfu or Dofus
have you tried Vanguard?
I couldn't agree more. excellent post

I'm still trying to figure out why blood and gore is needed.

Nothing about this game strikes me as being kiddy or for kids.

not sure what came first but player achievements were present in CoH as well. They were called badges.

Great thread btw!

Maybe you could tell us, how you felt about the games you've tried. Which ones you liked or disliked? or what about them you want or don't want in a new game

The franchise is down but not out...but its obvious the should have kept Sakaguchi around, or at least let him take his beloved FF with him. Somehow Square-Enix needs at try to re-capture the characters and feel that he does.

why bother posting on threads like these if thats how you feel. obviously the OP wants a f2p game

Lotro is a must try for everyone.

the game has great atmosphere, decent story and full and fun community

IMO there is really no such thing as F2P. Its like those late night infomercials that give you all that crap for one low price... oh but you forgot to read the x3 payments in fine letters and also the handling charge which costs more then the item.

I stopped playing LOTRO just before it went F2P and im so happy I did. I have heard from others that LOTRO's community went to the dogs after it went F2P.

So many good comments in this thread about why P2P is better and one thing I really hate about F2P is the fact that my chericter should advance on the in game actions I do. I should gain items including armor on the money I earn in game and through quests. I should not have to wait till a specific level to get a mount or dish out 10 bucks of my own money to buy a mount right now. Like someone else has said that this makes a imbalance in a game. I have nothing against real money transactions for pets, armor that is made 100% for looks, and other non game changing items.

its funny how i keep seeing people post about how they "heard" the Lotro community went to crap. I've been playing it for 3-4 months now and i just keep meeting nice people. I haven't been in or witnessed any ridiculous conversations or arguments on the chat channels, and the groups i've joined have been fun, even when we've failed.

Maybe i just chose an exceptional server, or someting...

A P2P system offers a number of good things.

1.  It raises the average age of players by a good 10+ years along with a huge increase in maturity and skill.

Baseless. Where's the proof. Wow is P2P, you're gonna tell me thats a better community than lotro?

2.  The quality of the game is much better.  The bottomline is if a game had enough good content for people to sub,  it would go with a subscrition model.

Baseless. STO, Champions, APB and from what i hear FFXIV all p2p games that launched without enough content. All are p2p

3.  Less exploits.

Where's the basis for this one?

4.  They have the money to continue to fund new content.

but no guarantee that they will do so, also no guarantee that you will like the content you've already paid for.

5.  The design is not made to nickel and dime people to death.

Why nickel and dime someone when they already feel entitled by paying you monthly?

6.  The playerbase is much more serious, expereinced and skilled.

again, provide proof.

7.  The amount of content is much larger.   Typically P2P games release with almost no content or cheaply made grind content or even cheaper to make pvp content.

See #2

I get the point you're trying to make, but you'll never get there throwing made up facts around.

I'm not exactly for p2p, but i am for alternate payment options.

The way i see it, if every game were to continue charging $15 a month, the market for MMOs will never grow. Why? because no one wants to pay for something they may or may not play, and no one wants to (or should) pay for more than 1 or 2 subs. That means what? No matter how many excellent MMO hit the market, only a few will be paid for and played at any given times. Its as if every new game, chokes out the last great one.

Can you see how that's harmful?

didnt think it was funny until i clicked to watch the demo. hahaha

funny, but still sad

All this doom and gloom over opinions that are pure speculation... sad

great quotes, thanks for posting them.

Im getting more and more excited about this game. Mainly because I can tell that everything that goes into this game is well thought out. Probably more thought going into this one than any other game i've followed.

To me, he hit right on when talking about the crafting. All that matters to me is finding rare components, ingredients, and recipes  getting those rare critical sucesses and marketing and selling what i don't need. If i can accomplish that without wasting time staring at that progress bar. i'd be happy.

I'm looking forward to breaking away from the quest line to explore a massive planet and see whats out there to be found. Thats something i miss from older games. I just hope the planets are as large as i hope.

I don't know what it takes to make a great mmo, but i definitely like this approach. Bioware just might have it "right".

nice. The randomization of the enemies in that game makes it well worth $5. good times

I'm playing Lotro and having a blast. Its a great game for those that enjoy pve and quests

Nice review. I actually installed the game thinking it looked interesting. However, I didn't even do the starting quest because something about it just didn't "feel" right.

I'd explain that more if I could...

Plus, I didn't think the graphics looked anywhere close to the way they looked in the screenies. (not talking quality here, I realize screens will almost always look better, it just looks different)

Anyway, your very non biased review reminded me that the game still "seems" interesting. I think i'll put a little more time into it, I want to see what its like to stay neutral throughout. The big war at the end sounds like endless pvp endgame, which I don't care for anyway.

This world is ridiculous, a company makes a AAA game and offers it at no monthly fee and people still beg the companies to let them pay. It's sad that we are so commercialized that we believe we have to pay monthly to receive quality content.

F2P is mostly a gimmick you know that? no MMO is really F2P. You think once you pay for GW2 box there will be no extra costs? how are they supposed to make better content for you down the line? they have employees to pay, servers to maintain, all this does not happen on box sales alone. There is no such thing as free in life.

*Sigh* The first game did just fine without a monthly fee and with the increased box sales this one should be fine as well. If they add a monthly fee, they can expect those projected box sales to drop, significantly... i'm not sure that adding a fee wouldn't help them get more money at all. I don't want to pay a sub, so I hope it works out.

For those of you that are begging to pay money, monthly. You should email the devs, I'm sure they will gladly take donations
