I would agree with leather worker for your monk. 

As far as where to start, consider running the island once to start as the rewards are better there.  However, the starter cities are pretty cool.  I prefer the starter cities with new toons but I have run the island a few times now.  The great thing about Vanguard is that there are so many options.  Enjoy the game!

To qualify for beta you need to prepurchase (as in, pay the full price right now), preordering (reserve copy, pay when it's released) don't get betta access. If you got 1 day headstart then most likely you got the regular preorder, prepurchasers get 3 days headstart.

If you want to get into this (and future) betas and are willing to pay the full price of the game right now, knowing that there's no release date yet, you should go back to gamespot and explain to them that you want to prepurchase, not preorder, or if they can't/won't, you can cancel and go to another retailer (https://buy.guildwars2.com/retailers) or if you're in europe, buy directly from Anet (same link, hit "go back"). I say if you're in europe because the digital version is sold out for now, but will most likely start selling again after this weekend beta.

Hmmm, since I'm downloading the client, does that mean I'm good to go? Or can anyone who pre ordered (reserved) the game but did not pay in full also download the beta client?

I really don't want to be disappointed and find out somehow the employees at gamestop somehow screwed up and gave me the wrong code.. But, that shouldn't happen considering it was printed on the receipt...

Did you pre-order or pre-purchase?  If  you pre-ordered from Amazon, the code won't work yet.  You must have paid the $60 to get into beta today.

Take a look at Rift or Vanguard: SOH as alternatives to WoW.  Vanguard as a fairly mature playerbase.  Rift is a mix.  WoW has it's positives as well for beginners.

They've turned EQ2 & DCUO into F2P recently, both were successful implementations and they saw great revenue increase.  They are turning EQ1 into F2P next month.  Vanguard being the smallest game out there will likely see F2P last.  The only thing I'm unsure of is how they're going to do it, because Vanguard at the moment does not have a cash shop.  F2P model works only if they had cash shops.  So chances are, SOE is turning Vanguard into F2P, while at the same time developing cash shops to start selling people items.

I agree with Mardy.  Following Smedley on Twitter will give you a bit of info (though, not much lately).  He hasn't mentioned VG going F2P...in fact, I haven't found an official announcment yet.  I've also heard rumors that VG is on the market as SOE is looking to revamp.  The F2P info may have come from the PSS1 deal SOE is working on which does not include VG or Pirates of the Burning Sea (EQ1 as well, I believe). 

On the other hand, see http://mmofallout.com/tag/sony-online-entertainment/ for a story about VG F2P info being leaked.  I wouldn't count on this though as there doesn't seem much reason to keep all of us in the dark about VG and PSS1 at this point.   

Along with the above suggestions, I would recommend that you join a corp...an established corp...if only for advice and guidance when you first start out.  ...and as said prior, don't trust anyone when you first start:)  Have fun and don't be afraid of losing a ship or two...it's going to happen eventually.  Best of luck

Yes, DF is a mess...perhaps I should add in my original comment that AV is a mess.  Server wipes for DF 2.0?  DF 2010?  I'd say AV is in pretty bad shape.  I'd love to eat my words as I had a great time in DF...right up until server wipes became a real possibility and game updates became fewer and fewer as well as less frequent.

In reality, the sandbox genre is in need of some major love.

Crafting in VG is very deep and at times, complex.  It's one of the best crafting systems in any MMO on the market today.  That said, it will take you a while to level up crafting.  It depends on how quickly you can gather the resources.  You can build boats, houses, armor...just about anything.  Alright, I'm done talking about VG...makes me want to return;)  Have fun!

ArcheAge is looking great, isn't it?  I'm a former VG player (up until last month) and a former Rift beta tester (all 6 or 7 as well)...ArcheAge looks like a combo of Xsyon, VG and a bowl full of awesomeness...with great graphics.  ArcheAge is really the only MMO I'm looking forward to playing.

OP -  I see your point.  I voted "no" to this due to the fact that I just canceled my Station Pass subscription.  However, I hope this project does turn some heads (or at least one) at SOE.  The final blow for me with VG was the fact that SOE asked me to use a driver for my HD seriers graphics card that was almost two years old.  SOE hasn't updated this game on that level in almost two years!?!?!?  I feel that I gave SOE enough of my cash over the years...starting with SWG and ending with VG...as have many others.  Best of luck and enjoy a great game!

No problem.  Hope your day gets better.  I'm not sure I'll be renewing VG this month.  I might renew when I start traveling again for work.  I've had a blast the past few months but this video card driver issue is pretty silly.  Let me know if you start any other game and I'll give it a shot with you.  Like I said, I might resub when I'm traveling with my laptop but for now, I'm refusing to roll back my desktop video drivers.  Take it easy!

I agree.  Throwing something on clothing would be nice..shield or otherwise would work as well.  I'm not a fan of the floating ID tag either.  We will see what they decide to do with this.  I'd rather have a robe or paint on a shield than anything floating above my head:)
