Im not a fan of star trek, but if I had to say only one thing to devs...

Okay, so I get that English is not your first language. What do you mean by "ship must not be welfare?" When I hear "welfare," I think of societal/governmental support of the poor. I don't think that's what you mean. ^_^
I think he means exactly that, ships provided in the game for players for no effort, as a donation from the start. Ie the term "welfare epics" is well known in WOW. |

Well I for one completely abandoned the concept of optical media a few years ago. Currently my HDD capacity reaches about 5TB, I have a separate PC nonstop online, serving as D/L center and sharing the stuff on DC hub of our neighborhood LAN. My current goal is to streamline the HW layer and get everything mirrored to prevent data loss, so that probably means 8x1TB WD RE2-GP for solid 4TB mirrored storage plus a couple of HDDs I have now (mainly consisting of 500GB WD RE2s). With today's cheap storage it's pretty feasible. HDD storage and fast connections are the future, optical media are the past.

Ethical Senarios in a Post-Apocalyptic Wasteland (semi-long)
Off-Topic Discussion « General Discussion 8/17/08 7:12:01 AM
Scenario 1: 1st of all it is highly unlikely I would be caught in a situation like that, but if it came to that, sure, I wouldn't mind. After a few days of freeloading it shouldn't be too hard to steal everything back along with some extras and disappear. Scenario 2: 1st of all, you would have to be really careless which equals suicidal with your ammo if this happens, but whatever, I would just quickly decapitate the zombie with my katana (giving my well trained and obedient dog a stay command if that would be necessary). Scenario 3: Very unlikely scenario tbh, why would I be traveling with group, why go to some strange house, how is it exactly a shelter (as oposed to dozens other structures), if it is, why the people are not already living there if its so safe a haven, whats up with the sandstorm and zombies, wouldnt the storm just take care of the zombies anyway and in any case it seems to be kinda risky to lock yourselves up in one location just hoping everything will pass, we have a radio, so where is this military, cant we just radio in for zombie blasting? Well onto the problem at hand, maybe I would just shoot him, one less religious fanatic idiot the world is better of without and as for the woman, well its her problem, getting pregnant in highly uncertain times where it brings extreme burden is not smart at all, if she's so keen to repopulate, she should think 1st and wait for things to settle down to some resemblance of stability instead of endagering the survival of additional people majority of which would probably irrationaly try to put the safety of an unborn child that will not be an asset for at least 15-16 years in front of their own. Scenario 4: I kill him of course. Maybe after he helps me repack and sort the things to be carried around on one person only. |

PS3 to get "mmo" called "MAG" from Zipper Interactive (SOCOM) which will support 256 player full blown battles!
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 7/16/08 8:08:28 AM
Hmm not sure about it being an MMO, but it certainly looks very interesting. For MMO I expect a persistent world & character, though they mention the campaigns and character development, so maybe there really will be a certain level of persistence. I was planning on buying PS3 when FF13 arrives, but as it goes also to x360 I saw no need, but this certainly is a nice and shiny new exclusive for the PS3, we will see. EDIT: so true with the FF13 being a blow, seems the series came a full circle now, nintendo->sony->M$ |

Kill everything it will let you, you cant kill most really critical ones. Maybe leve svchost ones running. You can kill even explorer and run the game with the run command from task manager. On the other hand, do not expect miracles, if you barely meet specs, this is not going to help you. |

I have been using Pandora for over an year and I can only reccomend it for everyone, I discovered a number of less known artists that are now among my favourites. Too bad it is limited to US ip ranges, forced me to do a bit of a workaround, but I still love it, especially if I want to quickly start listening to something while in work, as I dont have to carry any music with me and the US restriction may as well be nonexistant (global corporate networks sometimes have some advantages). |

Originally posted by Aesdyn2 I dont want to flaunt titles or whatever, I more like wanted to point out that maybe your post laden by a lot of technical stuff may be a tough cookie to chew for your average mmorpg forum visitor. And also you kind of jump from topic to topic sometimes without at first glance apparent reason that the next idea is implied from the previous ones. I think now that your OP can be boiled down to "I see how imperfect data handling in current MMOs is and have a lot of ideas on how to improve it, including a working analogue example, yet I encounter closed doors while searching for jobs in gaming industry, that sucks", at least I thats what it seems to me. As for the jobs, well, can't really comment that much, but I know that usually more than anything recruiters look on accomplished projects and how much value it brought. Therefore the more experience one has, the better, though in this rapid changing industry that is kind of a cursed blessing. As for trying to improve on things, in general, I think more often than not it is a lost fight. Maybe I am a bitter pessimist, but I see utter imperfection and disarray everywhere I look (but lets now focus on IT systems in particular). Well, lets list some of the reasons. Most of them are derived from the fact that development projects nowadays are large mamoths and the involved corporations are buearocratic colosses. The point of decision making. Usually the things that really matter on a given level, are decided on a level several tiers above, vast majority of times without any real understanding of implications for the most affected level/team. The cost/time/effort effectiveness. Often it is simply more effective to hire a couple of code/service monkeys in eastern europe or india than it is to create an IT solution. I have been witness of this on numerous occasions (myself often being the monkey for one task or another). The monkey may realize this, make its life easier by small scale IT improvements, but the call for greater change for the better gets lost on the way up or declined for some of the reasons listed her. Another, the unwillingness to change. Business loves proven working models. It fears novelty and associated risks. So there is always greater chance they will adapt an existing proven solution with known limits etc, than go and try develop a better one. Because that would probably cost money. While being somewhat risky. And the guy who gets to decide this doesnt really understand the advantages of the new hypothetical solution. he most probably has shares in the company and when faced by the decision just makes the safe bet. And the limitations of the used solution can be overcame by hiring a team in india to do some copy pasting anyway, its a nobrainer. Dunno, maybe you are beginning to see a pattern, maybe not, maybe I misunderstood completely and making a fool of myself, just returning from a night shift of doing some monkey tasks. |

Yees.... wait, what? Sorry to say, but your post lacks any sort of coherence and although having a masters degree in system engineering so I understand all the technical terms and some of the points made, the overall message of the post utterly escapes me. |

Lets all hope that our universe still provides relevant data to whatever lab it is running in, else they may decide to end the experiment. |

Bioware/EA DRM - Gamers can make a change ! (well ... kind of)
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 5/09/08 6:37:40 PM
Well the change is nothing world shaking, maybe a bit friendlier now for people with strange internet availability, but the points that the game requires online activation and has a limit set for number of installs still remain. The discussion on the official boards is very interesting in both of the related topics and includes several very very good and constructive posts. Unless the outcome is the removal of online activation and no limit to number of install though, the pirated version will still be the superior product. |
