TBH I can imagine Ergo Proxy MMO set after the series when the world just starts to get rebuilt. A falloutish anime MMO, would be so nice for a change from all the lame copy machine fantasy settings.

Trying to compare different kinds of anime or generalizing it under one stereotype is seriously wrong. The common thing is only the presentation layer (animated and with similar drawing style). There are several genres just like in movies or computer games. So please dont put Naruto and Pokemon into one basket or claim things about anime as a whole.

Actually the setting of Naruto world is perfect for MMORPG. Whole show is basically about a dude leveling up his ninja through quests (ok, missions), mostly in group (ok, squad), getting new abilities as he does this or from trainers (ok, senseis). There are many clans to choose from to get special abilities and several ways to specialise. There is nice diplomatic factor and PvP, ie vs Sand there was a nice PvP war, but now there is peace, nubs rather go together doing some PvE. The nubs even got a lack of healers and ie Sakura rather respecced coz she was not usefull in groups too much.
Noone wanted Naruto in a guild too, coz he was leeroy ninja pulling too often. So he bought a powerleveling service for a while thinking it would do some good. After 2 maintenances and a patch he is back. And the guild leader (ok, hokage) got him to duel a high level Kakashi to see if he is 1337 now. |

Future of MMOs --- And Whats Next?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 3/06/07 5:20:27 AM
Its only natural that well known worlds get made to MMOs, people are already familiar with the settings and its proven its worth etc etc.
But even the best IP cant guarantee success (um, Matrix online ? ) , so the game must be well made and preferably with new and catching concept ( hey, I can dream ) to be good. And as for Naruto, its actualy perfect settings for MMO. Geography with different zones, hero characters, zones and characters with different and clearly distinguished flavors, missions for the villages ( da quests ), tons of abilities and working "magic" system already in place ( character builds could be made along the lines of the system used in CoX ) , etc etc. The show is basicaly about a guy leveling his ninja char with unique build (each one has unique build tbh ) by doing some missions and epic quests, gaining power and new abilities in the process and from trainers :) |

Pala tanks build agro from holy damage (from which we (yea I played also tankadin) have extra threat) and this thingy establishes a very very solid chunk of initial agro and with a daze as a nice bonus. Its ofc affected by spell damage gear. |

Just a quick few sentences, yes I know druids can ressurect, but once every 30 minutes and with reagent is pretty limited. As for buffing, most classes have some kind of powerfull unique buff in addition to their repertoire, but paladin and shaman are two classes that actually specialize in wide variety of buffs so their role is also in this, properly selected totem or blessings and aura for each fight can make huge difference. Out of combat roles, yes, mages conjuring food, providing portals, locks healthstones and summoning, hunters aspect of the cheetah, tracking, rogue opening locked stuff, sneak activation of stuff, paladin mount aura, lock/shaman underwater breathing, water walking, feather fall, etc.. also the not exactly combat options of wipe-prevention and recovery, reincarnation, soulstones, divine intervention. And as for pala pulling, protection specced palas have actually probably the best ranged pulling attack available. |

Researched guide... aka... 2nd hand info? How long do you actually play the game, how many chars you tried (tried = experienced endgame with) ? Post-BC protection paladins are tanks on equal footing with warriors and druids. For multimob tanking they are actually the best alternative out there. Healers - any of the 4 healing capable classes can serve as main healer. A holy specced paladin or resto shaman are equally good healers as priests and druids and perfectly capable of mainhealing instances. Actually shaman or paladin might be preferable before druid in case you have only one slot available because they can ressurect. DD - any class can serve as damage dealer with the right spec. Multirole classes all have at least one DD talent tree and for the DD classes the trees are just flavors of how to do the damage. Shadow priests, retri paladins, moonkin druids, arms warriors are also fully capable damage dealers and tbh I have no idea why you list only one spec of warlock as DPS, what role do you expect the other 2 specs will perform? Demonology and affliction locks are equaly good damage dealers. There are some other strange mentions, like mentioning healers drawing agro in the offtank sectio, um the dps classes are much more concerned with this, any tank that cant keep mobs off the healers by properly getting sufficient agro on each to prevent loosing them to just the healing generated agro is a joke. Offtanks are only necessary where the mobs are powerfull enough that they cant be tanked in multiples by one char. Another strange thing, an offtank that can heal himself? You can tank or heal, you cant do both at the same time, you cant expect a shaman or paladin to heal themselves while tanking a mob. You also altogether skipped 3 role categories, crowd control, buffing and out of combat support. Anyway, good attempt, I can give you that, but needs some work still. |

Hunter
Shaman Paladin ... retired. Whatever class you are, keep one thing in mind, use monthly fee payments. The sad realization will come one day and you dont wanna that to be a few days after the 6 months payment went. |

Originally posted by Rehmes Not exactly true, WASD does provide advantage to people that know how to use it. For example (using WoW again, as its the most promiment WASD model), when I encounter warrior as a hunter, I must keep him away from me at all costs, he must keep me in melee range on the other hand, WASD is a necessity in this type of dynamic combat and whoever manages better, wins. I can quickly change direction, using WASD, so stuff like suddenly running around the opponent while wingclipping him ( a slowing melee attack) just as I pass him and continuing to kite around is possible, while I cant imagine anything similar using point and click. Also in WoW when you cast a single target attack spell, the enemy must be in front of you for it to land, if he isnt there at the time cast time finishes, spell fails. So if I run around an opponent, always aiming to be at his back, there is a chance the spell will fail because I will stand behind him when casting finishes. Same goes for autoattack, as long as I am at opponents back, he cannot harm me. This is of course pretty limited, but still, if you face a low skill opponent who has trouble even turning his char to face you, it shows. Anyway, WASD is basically much more dynamic and allows for movement and synchronizing attacks with movement much more. BTW, lick to move sounds hilarious |

If you ask about outlasting, my bet went to Star Trek, there is a hardcore fan base that will probably continue to play till there is another Star Trek product available :)

Click to move moves you in a straight line from point A to point B. Any maneuvering during combat is practically disabled, 2 toons stay next to each other and whack (or shoot flashy stuff over distance). Stuff like fast reactions, hand-eye coordination and good controls dont matter there. WASD brings at least a bit of this to combat and differences in skill are more apparent. I was considered a very skilled player while playing WoW, I guess also due to using fluid movement during combat (I played hunter and shaman, both classes with focus on instant attacks that allow you to be constantly in motion and "kite" enemies, in melee and closer range often circle-strafing enemies causing their spells and attacks to fail due to me as target not standing in front of the victim at the time it triggered).
Personally I will never again touch even MMO where there is autolock on target and autoattack, grew tired of that also, looking forward to AoC and Huxley. The only time I would consider point and click again would be only if it wasnt in mmo with the gear and grind centric model full of timesinks where the person with more free time has advantage in game. |

Aiming FPS style? or crappy point and click?
General Discussion « Stargate Worlds 2/17/07 2:30:20 AM
RPG originaly came from pen and paper approach and the name role-playing was derived from the fact people were taking a role of a fictional character to get through a story. The type of rule system or even lack of it had nothing to do with the term. Somehow later, mostly as this style of play came to computers the term RPG somehow got twisted to indicate a game with character progression measured by various rule sets. The way the character was progressing, the role play, was pushed to background. So basically an RPG in current terms is something where you drive some kind of alter ego through its destiny in virtual world and this alternate character evolves using some kind of rule system. The type of controls used to accomplish this do not define whether its an RPG or not. To tell the truth, one of the best RPGs I played was Deus Ex. And on the other hand, I dont consider ie Diablo an RPG at all.
The differece between FPS and RPG is that in FPS the focus is on the shooter, with no progression and negligible story. Having to aim in RPG doesnt make it FPS, its only different approach to controls. No RPG is pure, it is simply not possible, you have to implement the interaction in some way. Having to aim just adds another factor, how well is the person able to utilise the control method, or rather makes this much more apparent, as some kind of control is there always, difference is only how big an impact it does. I can fully understand that people that, to put it bluntly, simply lack the skill are against this type of thing. I on the other hand am looking forward to AoC where the aiming, etc will be nicely implemented and therefore skill will play bigger role, the outcome being equally affected by it and development level of character. If something similar was also in SGW, it would make me one happy gamer. But tbh I think it will be something along the lines of KOTOR. |

I agree with the previous poster(s), while certainly it is possible to create B5 MMO, the universe is not quite suited for it. There are many other IPs which would be better or actually very well suited for MMO. The mentioned Firefly is one great example and Stargate Worlds also has good potential world-wise.
