Why would Blizzard be concerned or even competitive with a niche MMO with low numbers? LoTRO has nothing on WoW as far as subscriptions go... maybe they set that release date to be a dick, which I wouldn't put past them. You only get one chance to make an impression, LoTRO was hoping for 1mil+ subs, they missed their mark by hundreds of thousands and unless they make the game free they will NEVER see those numbers (and if you read the forums, you'll know that the fans of LoTRO don't even want those kind of numbers)...  All you are going to see is WoTLK dominate the sales charts and put MoM sales far in its shadow.

Maybe if Turbine, you know, advertised like you're supposed to then things may have been different...

well put, im sure blizzard hardly consider lotro a threat at all considering there current subscription numbers are around the 200k mark so in total the expansion mines of moria will be looking to sell less than that compared to wow which will be selling in the millions

Just wondering where you get the 200K from. As far as im aware it hasnt been published anywhere? And a recent Interview Steefel said that LOTRO is well on its way to reaching mass-market - which only WOW has done so far. Oh, and LOTRO is not worldwide either.

Great article here http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=228691

I have to say that the LOTRO server im on is very densely populated atm.

If I was Blizz, I would be afraid, and try underhand tricks to stock the competition hehe

Top 10 selling games of 2007... LoTRO isn't on it, so that it means it sold less than 272k boxes. If you think the retention rate for MMOs is anywhere above 30-40%, you're crazy... so I think 200-250k is a very reasonable guess, besides if it were anywhere near impressive, Turbine would have blasted their sub numbers everywhere because it's great publicity... Blizzard has nothing to worry about, I'll be surprised if MoM sells more than 150k boxes.

You clearly have not been paying attention.

lrn2read.

Just because it got good reviews doesn't mean it sold well.

Yes, it did, unless you only consider Wow like numbers, Success.

what ballpark do you think lotro's sub numbers are then to deem it 'successful'?

To all the people who insult runescapes graphics I say: Have you played it recently since the graphical updates or are you judging it by the old engine? IMHO Runescape is rivalling WoW or even some of the modern MMOs such as Age of Conan in terms of graphics these days.

HAHAHAHAH!!... HAHAHHAHAHA!!! ROFLMAO!!! Did this guy seriously try to compare the graphics updates to the graphics of  AoC?!!!  You can't even see the players faces on runescape unless you are in a NPC chat screen. And even then the detail is deplorable. This has to be a joke .. seriously.

Not a joke... are you sure you've seen the latest graphical updates to RS and aren't just thinking of the old classic gfx? Runescapes graphics are now detailed and atmospheric, more realistic than WoW's cartooniness and as dark and moody as the art direction in AoC, possibly WAR too although that looks like it may be taking some of WoW's cartoony styling.

is this guy serious lol? i think the name slightly gives away the runescape fanboy idea but runefan101 really are u serious???

runescape is a joke in the mmorpg market

im slightly confused here is it just people who pre order the collectors edition that get access to open beta in europe? or do people who pre order the standard edition also get access to open beta as none of the websites mention anything about open beta for standard edition pre orders?

age of conan had its chance and it blew it, warhammer and the wow expansion will be the final nail in the coffin for aoc i wouldn't be suprised if they offered it to soe but even they wouldn't be willing to take this failure
