sorry I just could not resist. The parallel was just too obvious.

JOhn Is supposedly working on an mmo, it will be interesting to see a real developer like John Romero put something together.
Im just going to assume your joking.... because no one who has been around games for more than 5 minutes would say the words John Romero and real developer in a sentence and mean it.
I hope your kidding :

Alfonso John Romero (born October 28, 1967 in Colorado Springs, Colorado) is a well-known game designer, programmer, and developer in the video game industry. He is best known as a co-founder of id Software and lead designer of their groundbreaking personal computer games Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake. His unique game designs and development tools, along with the revolutionary programming techniques created and implemented by id Software's lead programmer John Carmack, led to a mass-popularization of the first person shooter, or FPS, in the 1990s. He is also credited with coining the term "deathmatch" and has served as Chairman of the Cyberathlete Professional League

I don't know about you all but wolfstien was one of my very first intro's into pc gaming. His techniques on game development and engine building/design are pretty much the foundation of game design and concept.  Along side Mr. Carmack these 2  people are ICONS .

Just for fun :  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brad_mcquaid
Brad McQuaid is an American computer game designer who was one of the original designers of EverQuest, a highly successful massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) released in 1999. He later co-founded Sigil Games Online where he is currently CEO and Executive Producer of Vanguard: Saga of Heroes.

2 games in the past 8 years .

........................................................................
 Romero : Lead Designer
Mcquaid: ONE of the designers ( apparently not the better)

Romero was lucky to hitch his sorry wagon to Carmak early in the piece. He would have to be one of if not THE most overated psudeo celebrity in gaming.

He showed his true talent with Daikatana.

So no I wasnt kidding.

If you want to talk great programmers who should do us all a favour and make MMO's start talking about people like Warren Spector.....

and btw.... please dont think Im having a go at you or anything... I just get the red mist when people start worshiping Romero when the only thing he really did by himself (as a project leader) was Daikatana and it blew royaly.... But everyone seems to forget that and associate him with things that Carmak carried the weight on.

Carmack is a programmer, how many programmers do you know of that have great design sense ? Without Ideas and design / concepts, nothing would every get done :D .  Maybe Diakatana was a flop , it is atleast to me , just one of those things which really doesn't matter because of Romero's over all impact on the progress of pc games as a whole. I totally Think Carmack is an awsome engine programer and can't wait to see his mega texture theory in action.

Each their own my friend , kind of like people say Mcquaid is a hero , some would agree , others would disagree.

What I like is the polygon work and bump mapping on the trees, it just makes them pop. Love the sky as well , those to me are the strongest aspects of the graphics. In some areas the bump maps just go overboard, like in every scquare foot of the landscape is bump mapped. just seems way over done , and they could of had better performance if they would of showed a millimeter of restraint .

Even when the characters in a screenshot they look stiff.  :D

Glad you are like the game ,seriously . Maybe in a few years i will be playing it , if they ever get the ox and cart innit xD

Lotro is fun , fun to play, fun to look at and the community is A grade. The game is what you make it really, i stood around chetwoods and just smoked my pipe and talked to a few travellers running around in their fellowships. Didn't feel the need to hurry up and finish my quest ,or go attack that crazy wolf , Just relaxing with my pipe . Got into a fellowship and did a quest , actually leveled on the grind , so it is possible to mob grind , but that would be kind of like  lineage 2 grind hehe ;) .

The thing about the size of LoTRO world is that , it has room to grow , in the form of expansions, it is a smart decision imho , not only does it make it easier on low end users machines now , it gives people time to prepare for the  (here is comes) "the future."
Think Turbine is showing they have a solid formula for making mmo's and the constant evolution in the tools they use is really shining in LotRO .

The worst part about this , Brad Mcquaid probably let his team make the game and they came up short. Who get's all the blame , P.R. Ceo's If I was brad Mcquaid , everyone would be fired except for the person who designed the skies and the trees.

To top that off, every 3d game editing tool , world editor and game client to server architecture can be attributed to the early work id software engineered.

Minor performance issues and minor bugs don't stop me from playing and enjoying the game. Nor have I come across anyone in game who is so fed up with bugs that they want to quit. Maybe you're getting hit especially hard with crashing, or maybe you just have a low threshold of tolerance.

A lot of gamers have misconceptions about how fast game development should be. They expect everything, and they expect it next week, or else they'll throw a tantrum and demand that things speed up; as though the development team has been loafing around, not even caring about the game, just to piss you off.

It's not for lack of caring, or lack of effort, or lack of listening. Development, bug squashing, and performance enhancement all simply take time. And this dev team is clearly passionately commited to the game and it's betterment, and have been running in crunch mode non-stop since a month before the game released to polish everything up.
Demanding, tantrum throwing, or even canceling your account will not make the process go any faster.
What specifically are you enjoying about the game ?

I think the MMOG world that Mr. McQuaid created has passed him by.  Other companies have taken his ideas and improved on them.  It is sort of sad to see our hero go down this way.  Due to lackluster sales Vanguard will not be able to give us all that he had hoped for.

I guess you can never go home again.

I always thought he took/got too much credit for what he did.  As if there wasn't muds and other game before him to learn from.

Ya guys like these forget or act like 'If it wasn't for my game' there wouldn't be an MMORPG following like there is today. What got me hooked on playing any game online was due to Gooseman the Inventor of the game of Counter Strike.  MMORPG's for me was a natural evalution inspired by that one online game.
me too. ALL HAIL THE GOOSE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" :D

"MMORPG's for me was a natural evalution inspired by that one online game"

Everquest = 1998
Counter-Strike (Beta) = 1999

Fact.
Cs had an alpha stage in 1998.
And before that I was hooked on HL Death match , so much I created my own skins .

I was pretty please with the items I could craft, I chose a craft that fit my player., a weaponsmith, it he can make pretty cool weapons. Maybe you can get items in quest , what do you do in the mean time before you can get the quests :D .I'm not a huge crafting person so it hits the spot for me =) . As far as "reading" any promises from the developers can you post a link to the article ?

He has already been quoted on his "theory" everything and anything he says now is just all P.R. hub bub .

20+ years in the industry and this what he gives his fans, seems kind of like a slap in the face.
