I think there is need for "massive" its not really semantics, it sets it apart from a normal online game. I want to interact with hundreds of people in a world. Not a few people in a small instance I can do that in Diablo 2 or something I play for free. If this is a trend MMO's will die, just because its massive doesnt mean it has to have 40 man raids either, I thought the whole reason they did that was because the guilds who raided were some damn hardcore and eliteist, the casual gamer saw no endgame nothing to do with population. Infact I would say it increased population because it gave most players more to do.

No game ever allows you to interact with hundreds of people at the same time.

LotrO Monster player

Showbane Shangrilla Sieges of 2007  US/EU vs KR/China

Both games I've participated in 200vs200 battles as the shadownbane battles reached 150 vs 400 (400 chinese players vs 150 NA/EU)

So you are wrong in your "assumption"

Think the bigger point is, Turbine is becoming renowned as the top mmo developer in the United States .

I agree, with the Op. The most part people who like games like AoC , aren't mmo players, they are more of a platform gamer. They like to pretend to be pc gamers cause they have a computer, but the end, they will shift back into something that is comfortable for them to play , easy and  visually (not mentally) stimulating. The fact that games like these platform pc titles are becoming more popular is a sign more and more platform gamers are playing pc's . imo

So now they have 1.5 million boxes sitting on the shelf ? Talk about a distaster waiting to happen ...

Wouldn't matter if they shipped 5 million boxes, the game is a shallow, no amount of copies will change that.

The game world is about all that appeals to me in the pvp server. Go anywhere kill anyone. Though I think the games entire content lacks a great deal in lore direction and purpose. The pvp aspect is good but I think with a few added features to enhance the pvp, the experience would be awesome.

I usually play shadowbane when I am off LotrO, but I decided to give this game a chance. It is very immersive in world design, it feels great to be inside game world and there is very little distractions that take you out of that immersiveness.

I won't say that is is the best game out because I feel LotrO just did everything on a level Sony and Sigil just couldn't reach. I will say that VG is way better then my experience with AoC.

There was a cs style mmo mod that was in production for a long time, might still be going on but I haven't got the slightest idea what the name of it is since it has been a few years since I was playing HL mods.

Counter-strike is pretty fun game, played it for a long long time :)

The first thing is you have to find what "complexity" means on a wide player base. May not mean the same things to as it does me.

I am on a limb that is almost ready to fall but will say this with my flame suite on. VG is playable, more so now then it has ever been, and the further I get in the game , the further I can see what Brad wanted. but just didnt quite couldn't get it there. Sony has done a great job so far with VG and if players keep showing the maturity in bug reporting and player feed back, I think VG will reappear as a refuge for some jaded gamers, specially on the FFA PVP server where the player are stressing that it is up to us to create the worlds Dynamic Laws in pvp.

Again I know VG hurt a lot people at launch , it hurt me, and I slammed the game and got multi banned for doing so, but to my surprise , as it is now,  it's a enriching experience. .....

13 years not a long time. It is a small amount of time for anything to actually develop. Consoles and platform games haven around for 25 years with pong and othe games.

Pc game as a whole didn't get jump started until 1993, the entire sector of pc gaming has grown and developed faster then any other market, but in the long term , it is still young.

I am curious why a developer is not aloud to have a successful title , like Lord of the Rings Online. Turbine created one of the first mmo's to satisfy the pvp crowd with AC . Why is is so bad that they felt they could make a commercial success, actually make a large amount of profit to fund new projects in the future ?

I think throwing this none sense around just because YOU aren't happy with any mmo's right now is troll like. Blizzard didn't take anything away from mmo's, they brought in new players to the genre, 10 million of them who where mostly RTS players. All the mmo's before WoW probably still have the samer amount subscriptions as after WoW launched.

Now that WoW is 4 years old developers are smart enough Like Turbine to create a game with the same ease of controlling and progressing , but in the same game they up the curve to bring those players into a steeper learning curve in the laters levels, helping them understand that mmo's wheren't just WoW, and giving them a taste of what an mmo could be.

I feel you conclussions are very premature since this is the youngest genre in the industry.

If it draws a great community the game will be even better, one of the problems with the launch was the very over zealous fanebase of Brad Mqauaid worshipers.... That has seem to pass and the game has really boiled down to the actual "core" it took a long time to get there but it is happening slowly.

Don't think this community needs a lot of polls and statistics , being humble is almost as elegant.
