General Discussion « ArcheAge

Despite what so many people on this forum would have you believe, PvP in Archeage always has been  a minority activity and presumably always will be. Nothing in the latest patch made PvE less viable. Gilda Stars are even easier to obtain now simply by doing daily quests. Making a game exclusively enjoyable for PvPers is not exactly a recipe for financial success, which is why Archeage doesn't.  Even the people who describe themselves as PvP players, in reality spend most of their time doing PvE activities such as questing, crafting, farming, foraging, mining, trading, fishing etc. as they are the core gameplay features. In fact, it's not unusual to see people complaining in faction chat about how boring the PvP is.

The game is very similar to SWG in as much as it has great open world PvP for people who want it but is completely avoidable for those who don't.  Where SWG had the flagging system, Archeage doesn't but instead has seven out of the twelve regions in your continent PvP free at all time, a further two out five are safe a lot of the time leaving just three out of twelve PvP enabled most of the time.

The oceans are the only places permanently PvP enabled but there is no reason to go there if you don't want to, apart from just one quest that most people will want to complete for the large farm deed.

To help pay for servers? Then how come online games like the Battlefield or Call of Duty or Counterstrike series can exist without monthly fees? They've done away with monthly fees for what, 10 years now?

So that new content will be released? Then how come every other non-MMO game can release a DLC or expansion without charging a monthly fee? You can go to the Steam website and look at all the no-monthly fee games and see their developers releasing DLCs and new expansions for their game without having to be motivated by its players paying a monthly fee.

So what's the reason really?

You must be living in a time warp. Most of them don't except in the initial money grab phase at launch..........

This is NOT a game in development. This game has already been released in other parts of the world. Simple translation and gaming tweaks do not take this long for most companies. Just confirms even more my concerns with the team (or not so much a team) over at Trion now.

I played this on the Russian server for a good bit of time. I was not impressed by it. Even now when I watch Alpha footage the game performance looks bad. I guess time will tell.

Which kind of explains why it's being changed for the western version doesn't it?

The language translation is just one small part of the delay. The rest is related to a massive update and conversion to core gameplay for the western market. The Trion people have recently spent a week in Korea thrashing out the changes needed and XL Games and Trion between them are now implementing the first stages, which will be coming to alpha next week. Further changes will be coming in another patch soon after and everything has to be tested on the alpha server before being ready to advance to the beta testing stage. That's probably going to delay the start of beta by a month or so, that's all.

People who say it's not a true alpha because the game is already released in Korea are just talking out of their backsides. The language has had to be translated not just to one language but three. That's English, French and German. That's not all though, many aspects of the game as released in Korea wouldn't appeal to a western audience so many core features have had to be adjusted and tested. The whole thing has also had to be integrated with Trion's account system, the Glyph launcher, which itself is in beta and of course their in-game cash shop, which will not be identical to the Asian one.

The latest thing that Trion has had to work into the game is a way to battle the massive recent onslaught of botters and gold sellers too. New game management tools are being introduced to testing next week.

I paid my $150 and I'm very happy with the way things have been progressing. I'd prefer they take their time and make sure the game is running as optimised as possible rather than rush it onto the market, incomplete and buggy like so many other games have been.

There's a lot more to it than translation.

Remember that Trion is just losing money the longer they remain in Alpha.

 Losing money?

They just stole 2.4 million banning 16k accounts @$150 each not exactly losing money the way I see it.

None of those accounts were paid for. They were fraudulent ones but you probably already knew that.

I wish you had mentioned the fact that Archage are changing the game under our feet by forcing us to have to do pvp in order to get anything in game. This will happen in the next patch called patch 1.2

In the game you need Gilda Stars to get hold of anything meaningfull: house, fast mount, car, etc, etc.

Up till now to get gilda stars you have to make up a trade pack and take it to a trader, on your own ladmass. should you choose to cross the see and enter pvp you will get even more gilder star that usual.

After patch 1.2 all this will change. Gone are all none pvp options, now you are forced to go pvp to get the gilda stars to get your house or anything else.

Nice bit of misinformation you provided there. The truth is that Gilda Stars will be even easier to obtain for PvE players via risk free daily quests. Also, continental trade runs will continue to yield gold and it's possible to use that to buy things that cost gilda stars too. Everyone will be able to have a farm, a house and a boat just by playing the PvE part of the game.

People will have the option to take the risk of PvP for higher rewards but nobody is forcing anyone to do anything if they don't want to. The game is a sandpark so you choose your own path.

Not saying they are bad because open a 2nd alpha server and give to those who pay the expensive pack better play conditions, but why they didnt do it few weeks ago when some costumers complain about the server is packed? or why they dont open the server right now or in next few days?

No, they will open the 2nd alpha server with 1.2 implemented, so why they dont move to beta state either?

Alpha and beta should be about testing the game/servers, with so many ppl playing isnt there enouph testing allready?

A Server packed is one of the best server tests, and its be this way few weeks allready for what i read.

I dont buy the expensive pack because im not interested in the pack, neither i want to spend that amount in a game in one payment.

And for those playing alpha and say Trion is doing it right, dont you want to play a release version? or prefer continue to play in a alpha / test server?

Anyway, im happy for those who playing alpha and will get better conditions in next few weeks, but not happy the way Trion or xlgames are manage the launch game here in NA/EU.

I will be there anyway, in a few months... or next year...

You seem to have missed the fact that beta has been delayed due to major changes coming to the game in the next few weeks. The Archeum pack  sales have way exceeded their projections and adding a second server will help all those people who can't find lamd to build on at the moment.

Originally posted by hcoelhoThe question still remains, though. Is it worth it ?

it's worth it if:

A, you are a laid back individual who is not going to go running to the forums posting your displeasure at spending $150 on something where you find things you are unhappy about.

B, It is worth it if you are excited about the features they describe but not what you have imagined in your head after you read about those features.

C, It is worth it if you enjoy crafting or pvp and want something where there is more to do than just questing.

D, It is worth it if you understand that you are paying for the subscription up front as this game will have a subscription. It is also worth it if the things you get for your money are worth it to you. If you are paying this money "just to play" and see the game then I highly advise against it unless you are "A" above.

E, It is worth it if you like traditonial quests OR if you can pull yourself away from the traditional quests and do other things. If you are a person who can't find your own path, hates traditional kill x quests but can only follow those quests as they lead you along then you are "going to have a bad time".

F, It is worth it if are not bothered by the art style. or the music. I personally turned off the music as some of it is grating to my tastes. I hate the mish mash art style but was convinced to try the game because of a video made by one of the forum members. I felt he had compelling things to say about the game and felt I could put my dislikes aside to embrace the main features of the game.

It is worth it if you can drop $150.00 and not be bothered by it if you hate the game. If you are scrapign together $150.00 just to "play" then I advise against it.

It is also worth it if you understand that you won't keep your progress and can accept it.

Thanks ! very hepful !

I though there were cheaper packs already, i surely won't drop $150. I just can't right now hehe.

Losing progress is not a problem if the experience is good and not a grind.... If the leveling process is always the same than wipes can be troublesome.

I guess i'll wait for the release or at least a beta without wipes. Do you know a timeframe for any of those ?

I agree with the points Sovrath made and personally,  am completely happy that the $150 I paid for the Archeum pack has been worth it.

I'll just add that any progress made in Alpha probably won't be wiped as that server is set to become the test server at launch. It's not guaranteed though. However, if you get in the beta phases, they will be on a new set of servers and we have been told there will not be any server wipes until launch at which point the beta servers will become the live ones. Unlike Alpha, Beta will not be running 24/7 but is due to be rolled out in a series of "events" lasting 3 to 5 days at a time. All progress will be carried over from each event to the next though.

The game isn't running out of steam. The server is packed 24/7 but it's Alpha and everyone's progress is destined to be consigned to test server status eventually. I'm still really enjoying the game but I don't want to burn out before the game has even been released so will start to wind down the hours I'm putting in very soon.

Being in Alpha has given those of us taking part the opportunity to learn the ropes and devise a strategy for the head start. I'll test my plan when the beta stage goes live but after that will probably go play something else until launch.

As for the debate about PvE servers, I don't see them as neccessary. The whole point about AA is how they have managed to mix both PvE and PvP play styles in one game just as SWG did all those years ago. Don't believe anyone who tries to tell you this game is a hardcore PvP game. It isn't. Open world PvP is there for those that want it but those that don't can almost completely avoid it and still have a ton of things to do. Much more than in an average themepark PvE game when I think about it.

The only thing related to PvP that everyone will have to do if they want a large farm is the quest to hand in a trade pack to the opposite faction's continent and you will probably die at least once trying. Once that is out of the way, you never need to go there again if you don't want to and even if you do, it's possible to go in one of the regular peace time periods so that only the sea crossing itself becomes slightly risky.

In fact, the degree of PvP you get involved in is completely up to you. Go fight the enemy in one of the red zones for full on battles, or play cat and mouse by carrying out PvE missions in war zones while trying to avoid enemy players. Using your clipper to do trade missions has a risk of being intercepted while at sea and adds a bit of excitement even if you don't intend getting seriously involved in PvP.

Been playing AA for over a month now and I haven't had any trouble with Glyph. It also recognized and integrated my existing install of Rift without a problem.

Same here. Glyph was installed along with the  Archeage alpha and includes launchers for Rift, Defiance and Defiance test server. I've had no problems with it and didn't even realise it was new until I saw the announcement a month later saying it was in beta.

The only niggle I have is that when I close Archeage, I then have to manually close Glyph afterwards. I would have thought Trion should make it close when the game that launched it was closed. Other than that, I like it.

PvP flagging on foreign continents is a game killer. If that doesnt get fixed game over.

I love it ! diffrent flavors man...diffrent flavors

Free to play people will be dock camping for trade packs because they cant own land, another game killer because only people that sub and pay money are interested in trading and PvE and they wont like getting ganked 5 feet from a turn in by the 200 people camping the docks.

Hey!  hire mercs ? make it a guild run ? you know ?

Not a whole lot to do at level 50 but farm and trade or try and PvP but in all seriousness the 'REAL' PvP in tihs game is serverely lacking. People can spout all the want about it but you only gain honor under war conditions and if it isnt a war somewhere then people arent actively looking to PvP. Ganking and zerging PvE players is another matter but not actual PvP where both sides WANT to do it.

Man o man.....not a whole lot to do he says..........gues you play solo in your farmvile ?

Systems are pretty limited. NO reputations to be gained, no special anything. The grind in this game is based 100% on the RNG for gear and weapons crafting. Very costly very bad system. But its an Asian grinder trying ot be westernized so Trion is doing their best to disguise the grind, but it isnt working.

I love it man, i am tired of a carrot on stick to grind raids / dungeons till my eyeballs drop out from scripted bosses.

Economy and AH system. Too volatile and pricing is a joke. Auto loading an auction matches lowest price which can be manipulated up or down depending. If something that sells for 50S gets bought out the next person can list for whatever they want and soon you have 5 pages of auctions still 5 times what any auction before it sold at. also goes the other way guys sniping auctions by listing a single item at 40 or 50% of the going rate hoping someone will lists stacks for the same price and then they buy them all up and re-list them. Yeah rewarding them for being 'smart' and making the 'lazy' guys victims but still a bad system over all.

Being smart gets rewarded a bad thing ? :(

Since youre not playing now you wont notice the way they destroyed the currency in the game. The special currencies are getting reduced to one type and obtaining that one type has been gated behind a severely broken system and a theme park daily quest grind. Both very negative to how the game currently offers them.

Again your realy want to make this a themepark or some version of farmville ?

PvP way too much CC and classes not even close to being balanced. But sine the system as a whole is screwed up anyway that is a minor issue actually. But basically whoever gets the first shot wins 90% of the time. Which because of the aforementioned system is any time youre on foreign soil because you cant attack first.

This is getting changed in the next big patch / build, in the meantime try Auromancy, breaks all CC / Stuns.

It will remind you of other  games but it gets old fast. Its one of those games where once you get your house, boat, 'toys' youll be just logging in to do dailies or chop a tree or kill a pig or shear a sheep. Once that gets boring you will either stop subbing (and lose your land) or sell your spot (if its prime real estate) and play for free. This game is going to be very split. free to play gankers and 'pvp' and subscribing land owners and PvE. Right now all the changes seem to hinder hthe PvE crowd, which is a recipe for failure. So until they implement the changes the hype meter on this game has to be put in check.

Here it proves you are a solo player and this game is not ment for you.

Try any of the more pve carebear focused mmo's where you dont have to socialise or join a guild to get the most fun out of the game.

Archeage at its heart is a social mmo that focus on players that are working together for a single task, be that your task or you buddy's.

All your points are rubbish to many of us as you seem to miss the whole point of this mmo.

lol. What gives you the right to say the game is not meant for him? It seems in fact, YOU are missing the point. This game is a sandpark, which means there is no right or wrong way to play it. It's just as possible to play this mmo solo as any other. Virtually everything can be soloed all the way from start to level 50. I'm pretty sure that at any time of day most players are doing solo stuff such as farming, trading, questing, fishing etc. and not grouped up at all. PvP is entirely optional btw in case you haven't noticed. This is not a hard core PvP game and if that's what you want, you're in the wrong game.

Alpha servers are supposedly to be rolled over as PTR servers after release.  The intention is to not wipe the Alpha server at all yet they specifically warn against certainty of such.

It's been rumored that the beta servers will be wiped after each event and it's possible they will have an early access at some point.

I'm pretty certain I've seen an official post stating characters will persist between beta events. I can't remember where I saw it though. Could have been the official AA forums or on Reddit.

No it didn't. I was in both closed and open betas from summer 2006. Everything was wiped before the official launch in 2007.

True but it's 100% certain beta servers will be wiped, so nothing from them will be carrying over.

I did a major upgrade to my PC recently, which made it almost a new machine. It has a new motherboard, I7 processor, 16 GB memory, new R9 graphics card and a 2 TB hard drive. However, although I did consider putting Windows on a SSD, in the end decided against it as two people in my guild have had SSD failures. They don't give any warning  like conventional hard drives do, they just die and everything on them is lost. I decided not to take the risk. A 7200 RPM, hard drive with Windows 8.1 fires up from sleep really quickly and is fast enough for me for the time being.

So I'm very interested in ArcheAge.........I have $150 infact I have a lot, but I just not paying $150 period. I'll pay for a game, I have no problem paying a monthly sub.  Im sure many feel the same as me.

So when can we expect this game to release like every other NORMAL RELEASE ?

I little side note :

I may have to wait an additional few months after release because it has a cash shop. In other words I'm trying to weed out the bull shit !

Ok so lets break this down . You say you would pay for the game so $60. Then you would pay for a sub. $15 a month.

So in 3 months you would have spent $105.00.

Now I bought the Archeum Pack for $150.00 . So I am getting 3 months sub ($45) 11,250 cash shop points($75), Alpha/Beta access,4 days head start, a bunch of in game goodies, A high end Glider etc.etc.

People this ISNT a pay to play Alpha. It is a Collectors Ed. with Alpha access.

Also its the IMO the best game ive played since old school EQ and UO.

I do love how the OP said "I have a lot" bully for you .

It's kind of funny how you took bits and paces of a different post to cater it to your liking :)

This is the whole story :

ArceAge, Lets break down some math ( lets just look at it this way )

If a game was $60 ( with one month free ) +15+15+15+15+15+15 = $150 so you better like the hell out of the game for 7 months. Now lets add in the Cash Shop WITH A few things that would make life a little better and enjoyable, $150+50, that's $200 so you BETTER REALLY LIKE IT......Not this is taking into account paying full price for the game in the beginning.

This is what anyone would call a catch, even if you like the game :)

The topic was " every game has a catch ". This is not a reflection on how  a game is good or bad, just that their are catches or you could call it trickery in this case.  Now you even pointed something out that's even more scary. You are given $75 in cash grab points !!!....That's a lot of virtual money that would be real money when the game is released for the average player.......This sounds like the Cash Shop will have significance importance, where players will have to go above and beyond the monthly sub.

.............and you're conveniently forgetting to take into account all the free play time people are getting while in the Alpha. That could be be around six months with no further money needed and the game is very playable already. There's nothing game breaking missing.

People this ISNT a pay to play Alpha. It is a Collectors Ed. with Alpha access.

You paid $150 to Alpha test a F2P game with some goodies and to get an edge at release over fully F2P players.

[mod edit] Enough people have pointed it out by now that the $150 isn't to play Alpha. That's just one of the bonuses. The game ISN'T F2P for people who want to have access to the full game, it will have a monthly sub and the $150 Archeum founders pack includes three months worth of that, $75 worth of cash shop credits and lots of other bonuses.

[mod edit]  you should go to and read it from the horses mouth.

They could keep the game at beta longer because you have to buy access to beta so why not stretch it.  Afterall the game is f2p so they will have a honeymoon period while in beta before the masses flock in and they will have to deal with a lot of people using the resources and not paying at all.

Indeed, the smart move by Trion would be to remain vague on the open beta date and watch the sales of Early Access packs very closely. As soon as those sales show a clear decline, it's time for open beta and "Founder's Pack" sales to start !

Yes. The success of their pre-order early access must have taken Trion by surprise, but they will adept for sure. However, they will be concerned about loosing good will when they overreact to their own marketing success. So, no, I don't think Trion will go down that road for a extended period of time. But I do reckon they will try to get the most out of it.

With Trion selling three times as many Archeum founders packs as expected, I wouldn't recommend anyone holding their breath for a free invite to the closed beta. That's bound to be oversubscribed too. The best anyone hoping for a free look at the game can have is for an open beta invite just before launch.

Some other people have reported problems when trying to order the Archeum pack. It seems there is a particular problem for anyone wanting to use Pay Pal if they don't have a credit card linked to the account.

Best thing is to make sure you have a Trion account set up before you start .....!input.action?dd=1

and have added a current preferred payment option...........

which needs to be a credit card or a Pay Pal account funded by a credit card. Debit cards/Bank cards are not accepted it seems.

If you still can't buy the Archeum pack, contact Trion here:

Hopefully, they can fix it for you.

That sounds interesting. I can sure imagine how a MMO can help some (older) people stay mentally active and have some social interaction. But I doubt it will matter much if they already have a rich social life outside the game. Nowadays ,  many retired people in the age range of 50-70 stay very active socially. It is the case where I live anyway.

Also, 55+ is not a generation that grew up with computer games. So I would be interested in how they started with gaming. My suspicion is that it comes from family influence. Which then would imply that they already have an active social life outside games. But I guess that having a hobby that keeps you busy mentally is always good to have. It is less passive then watching telly. Even if it is WoW :p

55+ is definitely a generation that grew up with computer games. The first ones came out in the 1970's. Admittedly, they were very basic compared with modern ones but they were electronic games all the same. Even my father, who was born in 1906 and my mother, born in 1910 used to play with my tennis game (Pong?) console back then. By the early 1980's, we had home computers that doubled as game machines too.

I'm not sure why this survey is restricted to WoW though. There are so many other mmo's that appeal to older players too. The average age of our kinship in LotRO was thirty six when we did a survey some years back and we had a number of players in their 50' and 60's at that time including the kinship founder and leader.
