I really have no interest in perma-death as a main mechanic in an MMO. The fact you are playing over the internet alone makes it far too troublesome and that doesn't even consider the asshats that exist in mmos who only wish to grief others.

I do however think there is a place for it in nearly any mmo. Risks aside I love the concept of extreme risk vs reward which is all but taken out of modern mmos. Old school mmorpgs had content designed to be hard to find and very difficult. Developers knew a very, very low percentage of players would ever experience some content and this is what made those games far more epic than modern mmos. Some, like Asheron's Call, had specific challenges for Monarch (guild) leaders non leaders could not do and specific rewards were granted. Ultra rare loot existed with even some that was never actually found by any player.

I would love to see a return to this but also step it up a notch. In any mmo there could be challenges offered with rare rewards that could entice the most hardcore and serious players but with the risk of perma-death. This is 100% voluntary and when accepted by a player likely a server wide message reveals a hero is about to take on a perma-death challenge. Obviously special support and logs may be required in case issue occur. Such grand rewards would server more as a status boost amongst the community and not so much as making that player truly OP.

Perhaps perma-death quests could occur at various levels but the true end game ones would have the greatest rewards vs the greater risk. Imagine a powerful and well known guild leader taking on such a challenge and failing? In old school games where leveling is slow and community is built upon guild interaction this could send waves through the server community.

Fun, fully voluntary and finally true risk vs reward. This is a true end game experience if I ever heard of one.

Not boring, Not predictable and definitely Not Safe...

I love it!!!!

How would I make Perma-Death work?

As somebody else said, it would have to be a true perma-death game. You can't water it down just to appease a group of players that would otherwise avoid this feature. Does this mean you will have smaller player base?... definitely. However, this  would also mean that the player base you do have would be playing the way it's meant to be played.

Perma-death is supposed to encourage smart game play and complement risk vs reward. Why would you even want a group of players that are just going to hide and expect the worst?

What game would I make? I would to make a Game of Thrones MMO.

Perma-death

Skill based (no classes)

Career professions (as in combat only being 35% of the game)

Structure building/creation

Custom Houses (as in relating to a institution, or society. i.e House Greyjoy)

Politics

AAA graphics

it's a given, i think more people will pick it up for console than pc release.

They were counting on this.... ESO for the pc was like the paid beta for ESO for consoles.

Start a new thread about a previously discussed topic, you're bitched at for starting redundant threads.

Search for an existing, older thread on a topic to add to, you're bitched at for necro-posting.

It's one or the other around here. Either way, you're gonna get bitched at by someone, whom had the choice to simply not click on the thread link in the first place.

OR..

You can search for an existing thread on a topic, observe and receive the answer to your question and possibly even read a post that mirrored any comment you were going to contribute.

Redundancy solved!

Open-world is overrated.

It's an invitation for griefers, and unbalanced gameplay, whether if it's for pve or pvp.

Progress is being made on an emulator

You can check it out here http://darkfallorigin.boards.net/

Looks like emulators to the rescue yet again!

Its hard to seperate P2W from PVP unfortunately, something that Archeage most certainly suffers from,  i would say the best game for PVP none instanced, is Eve Online, but its a P2P game, among the F2P games i would say the best is probably Planetside 2,  although that also has a certain amount of P2W too. I think it depends on how much $$ you are prepared to spend to compete with the other players, this is especially true of Archage

Not true for Archeage -  no matter how much you spend - you will end up in mostly heroic to celestial gear - see below:

The yellow box is where everyone ends up - if you don't spend a cent and just play a lot - that's where you end up - if you go and drop some $$ and don't have the time to play hours every day - that's where you end up.

If people could just buy EPIC - LEGENDARY - MYTHIC - sets and gear - then yes PvP would be horribly broken - but RNG in making anything past celestial is so severe that nobody even tries it (celestial -> divine regrade has 85% chance of item being destroyed - and it gets worse from there for every tier).

So needless to say - yellow box is what people who spend end up in as well as people who don't - the only difference is how fast you get to the yellow box that is all.

I've not spent any RL money in AA since September and I am in the yellow box with all my gear - this is where all the active players are on every server.

There's nobody on any server (including Korean servers) walking around in a full Mythic set one shotting entire guilds of folks - this is the image that's being perpetuated with "P2W" arguments and in reality this is not happening on any AA server period.

Bottom line - you can't buy "gonna pwn everyone with my gear" in AA - nobody is selling the "faceroll" tiers because nobody can make it.

I hate these PTW arguments though, as they never accomplish anything.  So PTW arguments aside, what do you guys think is the best PvP system out atm?

Eve, then darkfall and Mortal online(sadly).

archeages is alright but the combat is pretty imbalanced in 1v1 and tends to fall apart when you go beyond an 8v8(mostly AoE spam fest). that 2-8 v 2-8 is pretty good though.

Archeage is pretty good... PvP is supposed to be imbalanced. The only way one could truly balance PvP is with strategy and tactics.

The game has changed so much since I learned with Annie, and even Annie herself is considered slow by most, and no longer suitable for a mid lane game. Annie reemerged with support builds and is at roughly the bottom 20% of popular champions now. Having not played much support, if I want to play my favorite champion in a game, I’d either risk being yelled at for trying to take her mid or have to go and learn the support role.

Annie counters all the "popular mids" like Le blanc, Kat, Fizz, Ahri, Mord  and Akali.

She is a viable champ...

I don't think player trading is good for new generation MMOs . specially F2P MMORPG where the economy easily get broken by gold (or whatever) farming.

No trading between players specially good for F2P MMORPG. Sadly most companies don't see this.

Trading between player don't make a game MMO , so remove it don't change anything.

In fact , i hope future F2P MMO don't have player trading.

It raise the Co-op between players , since you can't buy , you need other player to help you archive it instead of just buy it though AH.

Or you can just buy it off using real money , it good for the company and the game.

It my experience come from a browser game called Wartune , though i only play it for 2 month . But it show that non trading work great on F2P new generation MMOs.

I agree.

Around 40 seconds  on average. In other games people accepted this..somewhat (Ihave seen complaints in other games too however). But in Bloodborne, where the player dies a lot, this problem is magnified, since each time the player dies, the player is hit with another load screen. Some people timed how much they were loading, some were loading 2/3th of the time they were playing.
Instead of playing better people cry about the loading times, quite tragic...
Has nothing to do with that. Bloodborne is a hard game, you're going to die in it, a lot. No matter who you are.

Each monster basically swings at you, and you need to learn to step back and sidestep on every swing, it takes time to learn, since you need to learn the moves of monsters.

Everyone who plays Bloodborne or Dark Souls, (they're from the same creators), will die in the game, a lot. It's just how the game was made.

That obviously compounds the loading problem.

You actually won't die a lot if you play carefully (esp in Bloodborne, jesus the healing is op in that game), the games are not hard, you are just not an unstoppable juggernaut of doom like the majority of games these days.

I plan to do a no deaths run in Bloodborne as I have done in all the previous souls games. It isn't even some monumental achievement, winning a round in most roguelikes is far more difficult.

I thought the half life 2 loading times were more annoying back when that was a new game.

In the course of doing your no death runs, how many deaths did you have while training to completely master the game?

Exactly

I died very little...

Smart people learn from their mistakes... geniuses learn from other peoples mistakes - ?????

Good afternoon!  I've been searching for a game for my friends and I to play that has a laundry list of things; however, I've failed so far.  I've tried Wurm Online, Istaria, Arche Age, WoW, and ESO but none of them really do what we'd like.  I'm looking for a game with...

1) Real time combat

2) Building (not just a house, but a castle, a village, maybe an army, etc etc)

3) Pure PVE (or at least a game where you do not have to do any PVP)

4) 1st or 3rd person view

5) Deep customization

6) Deep crafting

7) RPG leveling/skills/classes (combo of these)

8) I'd like to see mining/farming though if not so be it

I've searched and searched and found some games (Darkfall seemed cool but too much PVP) but most either are pure PVP or are really really really slow with combat that makes Morrowind look fast (Morrowind is my fav RPG btw, just saying the combat wasn't the best lol)

Thank you all for your time!  And heres hoping!

Life is Feudal

It has PvP however, iv never actually used my sword other than killing animals.

I could be mistaken, but isn't that all the PvE LiF has? Killing animals for meat and stuff?

You can also try 7 Days to Die, which has mostly the same features - but it's not Fantasy in case you're looking for a Fantasy title only.

He could still group up to kill bears with his friends, there isn't a world of difference between killing animals and killing Orcs.

Just give in to the dark side and buy a PS4 Mike, you won't regret it.......... Muahhahahahah! Seriously though why limit yourself to one platform. I have never understood that as a gamer.

This.

I loved Salem

I bought ESO in March 2014, quit in summer.

Installed again two days ago with Tamriel Unlimited launch, walked around for an hour, upgraded my horse, got bored, and left.

So, I went and spent $250 on an upcoming next-gen MMORPG that wants to draw inspiration from Skyrim, with real first-person shooter combat (hit detection and shield walls), without silly skill hot bars and cooldowns, and full focus on immersion and role-playing.

For the $250 I got my own house (should look like something in the screenshot below), something that ESO will possibly never offer either.

It's my final bet in the genre of fantasy MMORPGs.

This image doesn't link to any game that exist.

The fact that you "donated" 250 dollars to a "next gen MMO" that doesn't exist seems a little odd.

By all means correct me if i'm mistaken.
