EQ2 was mortally wounded when they added the Legends of Norrath, it was given a death blow with Station Cash, it is dead, SOE just doesn't want to admit it. |

Originally posted by openedge1 I am trying to think of the games I could play that add more content... That leaves me with EQ2. I am just not up to playing that game. It grows tiresome with the slow leveling pace and cloned quests for the various levels. I also think I am done with Elves and Dwarves, so this does not help. As to other games..I can look at LOTRO, but they have not added new "content" since Moria, so it is going on 5 months now without any new content for those who have burned through (and it is not fun to me). WoW? No new "content" since expansion. And I have been there and done that for too long. And no other game interests me at this time (WAR is just a bad game, L2? No WAY!, Darkfall? not even a game to me...) I think I will wait on Age of Conan...thanks.
Actually, LotRO is adding book 7 in a patch today. but yes, the speed at which MMOs update content seems to be slow, but I'm sure it isn't a simple process for them to do so either. The only game I've ever known to have constant updates to content was Asheron's Call. |

Originally posted by Redline65 How does implementing this eliminate the chinese gold farming companies from the game? The theory would be it would not longer be profitable for them to engage in the behavior when people could do so legally, thus creating a larger supply, thus dropping the price. Plus when you add in the costs for banned accounts to the gold sellers, the cost becomes more... extreme, so eventually they'd be priced out of the system due to the expenses and the lower profit potential. But that is only a theory and not sure it will hold up in practice, but I guess those who play VG will knwo soon enough. |

What was your biggest disappointment with Age of Conan?
General Discussion « Age of Conan 3/13/09 10:30:27 AM
The class structure and the complete imbalance it had in PvP. For PvE purposes I like playing tank based caracters, yet in PvP they are pretty much completely worthless as they can't beat their way out of a paper bag with the end proped open and thus all that nice defense and mitigation becomes worthless. No way to taunt players, no way to hold agro in PvP makes classes like the guardian basically worthless, especially after nerf and nerf and nerf to the point where a guardian couldn't kill a player 10 levels below them (granted they couldn't be killed either), unless you spec'd a certain way and made it to a certain level to get certain traits. Add that to the clicktastic combat system that will probably be the cause of more carpel tunnel syndrome cases of any MMO and you wound up with a game that was not fun for tank classes and actually was painful to play. |

Originally posted by ethion So, what you're saying is that players with a lot of money and not a lot of time should be on equal footing with players who have a lot of time but not a lot of money? I'm not sure that all the people who use RMT do so because they don't have a lot of time to invest in the games, it's because they choose not to invest the time but want what those who do invest the time have. Ion
I don't think there is anything equal about players in game because real life definitely plays a role. I teen age person living at home not in school can easily spend every waking moment playing. I have a job, kids and other responsibilities that restrict the amount of time I can play. Are we really equal in game?? I spoke to someone many years ago who bought a player account for something like $1500. It was a player I knew and I was really curious why someone would buy a max level character that was well established in game. He said because he had lots of money and wanted to play the game but didn't have time to work his way through the levels to get to the part where he can start raiding which is what he wanted to do. I asked if he didn't feel that he didn't know how to play the class and would be a negative to other players. He said yeah he was aware that he needed to do some learning and was having people in game help him get up to speed. After thinking about it I honestly didn't see where what he was doing was really all that big a deal. There is no equality and really what does it matter to me and my friends what somebody else does?
the difference here is taht in the current state, it isn't sanctioned by the game company, thus the general person doesn't use it. Tell me, which would you do, sell an item crafted (which only cost you time to make) on an ingame market or the more personally rewarding RMT market? How freely would you give gold to new players, if you knew that gold could be used to personally line your pockets through the RMT market? RMT is a killer to a community because even though it is stated as optional, it really isn't. It will become pervasive to the point where getting basic gear from TSers will be for real money. It will impact the entire game, you will not be able to ignore it and it will become mandatory to be able to function in the game. This is what $OE wants, because they will make real money on every transaction rather than nothing on in game transactions or the gold spammers. |

I question you then. Did both the 80 hour a month person and the 40 hour a month person start at the same point? Did they get the same (approximate) money for kills? Did they get the same amount for the quests they both completed? If the person who plays 80 hours a month gets to level cap in 3 months and the 40 hour gamer gets there in 6 months, did they not both get to the same point? Who do you think enjoys and appreciates their accomplishments more, the one who took longer to get there or the one who probably moved on to another game soon after they hit the cap? |

Originally posted by Nadia you can infer that but I'm not saying that
I'm saying MMOs are *not* equal to all players - unless you want to restrict everyone to only playing like 20 hours a month
the stereotype basement gamer has always had the advantage in mmos
The difference is that it is still based upon what was earned in the game. People can play a huge number of hours and get nowhere or people can play a short time each day, play the game to advance and do better. It has to do with how you construct your effort. I knew some hardcore raiders in EQ2 who played less than the casuals did, but they did things highly efficiently when they were online. All services like the gold farmers/live gamer style systems give is people a way to cheat the system, to get the rewards without playing the game. It is no different than getting a mod for a sp game that gives you a virtual god mode setting, why even bother if you didn't want to play anyways? |

Originally posted by Nadia fully agree when they first tried this on EQ2 years ago, they wanted it on all servers but then backpedaled after public outcry to EQ2 Exchange being restricted to unique servers
its not live in Vanguard yet but I doubt SOE will limit this to only 1 server
They have stated it is for all 4 servers. |

The big difference between illegal RMT and legal RMT is future tax conquences for the PLAYER. The federal government is already looking into how to tax second life, how much longer after that until that start going after the RMT aspect? The US government has a huge deficit and has spending programs galore with our current president/congress that they will need to fund. |

Well, I left EQ2 when they added the MT cash shops... I even emailed Smedley to tell him I was disappointed and that it was a bad idea and he scoffed it off, of course (replied, but said I should give it a chance...) If it comes to other games (I was one who was outraged when it came out that Turbine was looking for a RMT person), I will leave there too. I don't like goldsellers in game, but at least as long as they are illegal, I can justify that the game at least attempts to be on an even play field. When they legalize it, that illusion is shattered and I can no longer enjoy the game for what it is. |

wish I could say I'm shocked, but I'm not. It is just a matter of time before this is the standard for SOE, IMO. I've been expecting so see them convert the remaining EQ2 servers for some time now. |

POLL: What is needed for you to resubscribe?
General Discussion « Age of Conan 3/11/09 9:50:05 AM
I would need some 'easier' way to do combos... There was simply too much clicking for me, to the point it was damaging my hand... I'd like a trial to see if the game had improved any... I was staring at a long grind in the villas when I left as there was little other content for my level (52/53 from what I recall). I voted for the 1 month, but even then it could be 15 days and it woudl be fine, enough to see the world, performance on my rig, etc. A US based PvE RP server wouldn't hurt either, kinda of pointless to have a PvP RP server to avoid the asshats when the PvP draws them like moth to a flame... |
|

Honestly, I wouldn't bother. From what I can tell, the PvP servers are on a slow trip to oblivion, at least they were 3 months ago when I quit EQ2. The players were begging to have the 3 PvP servers merged just so there would be people to kill. |

I love my burgler (33), but I find she shines much more in a group than solo, so I find I don't play her as much as I would like to. Not that she can't solo, just that I don't find it as enjoyable as grouping with her (others opinions will of course, vary). I have a hunter (23), they seem to solo pretty well from what I've seen. I find the guardian(16) is a decent class, but I've recently started a captain(14), pretty cool class. I have a low level warden(10), but I find I just can't get into playing him much and a minstrel(12) that I play on occasion. And of course, I am into Tradeskilling and have several being worked on. My wife plays a runekeeper and seems to solo just fine on her though, for what it is worth. and in case you haven't notice, I have serious altitis as I've only been in the game since late December ;) |

Why do SOE publish the best games and yet they're all failing?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 3/10/09 7:56:09 AM
SOE has a real issue with the, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" part of games... they are constantly making huge changes. For example, in EQ2, which I played for nearly 3 years, every expansion had some major revision to the game... eventually if you keep pissing people off by changing things they enjoyed about the game, they leave. then you have Darth Greedious (Mr. Smed), who will do anything if he thinks it will get him $1 more and if it doesn't, it is the players fault for not liking it... |

If all MMO's tomorrow became item shop games would you quit MMOs and why?

If the gear that can be 'bought' is better than what can be gotten by playing the game, the game will have to be balanced to this purchased gear, thus making those who do not buy it have a more difficult time to play it. |

not only would I quit, I did quit when the MMO I was playing opened an item shop. There really isn't one thing about them that I don't like, it is alot of things... The talk of taxation on item shop based games, the legal issues of ownership, the sheer fact that I play games to enter a level playing field and now one artificially sloped to who can pay more, etc... |

I have often said that FFA PvP brings out the best and the worst in people... unfortunately, those that it brings out the worst in, tend to ruin the games for the rest of us. Agreed. FFA PvP games are a true RPG fan's dream come true. After all, it's a world with consequences and danger. Then you have the asshats who are only there to "lol pwn" newbs and go out of their way to ruin another player's day. If you read most of the impressions from the current batch of beta testers...err I mean players, you will notice one trend. They all talk about PvP. While I'm a huge fan of PvP and enjoy the hell out of it, for a game to be a true RPG, there has to be a lot more. Where is the adventure? Surely it isn't "lol we pwnt 12 newbs @ teh orc newb zone and looted some banded armor." This game is becoming Planetside fast. The only difference is that Planetside actually had meaningful PvP. There was a reason to take over and hold those installations, where as in this game it's PvP for the sake of PvP. While that approach works well in Team Fortress 2, in an RPG game, it's a travesty to the genre.
I see this game more like shadowbane, in terms of PvP. Seigable cities (which is what SB started out with) with the possiblity of adding in things like resource mines that you need to control and such to make certain types of gear. IF it turns out like SB, this the purpose of the PvP becomes land control and politics, which can be a fun game to play. But in the end, the griefers will begin killing off the new players which will leave them frustrated and quiting as it won't be fun and then they will then begin to not fill the attrition of those who are leaving and then you are left with an empty world to play in where PvP is hard to find and thus they begin to leave. How fast this happens varies, but I believe it will happen at some point to DFO. |

and then some of us don't have a choice as it is the only browser allowed on our work machines (because it is the only one supported by our core software company mainly). To say we shouldn't be allowed to have a working site because we are forced to use a particular browser is pretty arrogant, and that is trying to remain nice. As for the issues the OP has stated, I have seen them too, usually when I open forum topics normally. Not always, but I tend to wind up with one such event every day I come out. |
