I suggest Webkinz.  You can play at www.webkinz.com

Only thing is, you'll have to buy a webkinz doll but they're pretty cheap.  Under 10 dollars.

I think they were pretty smart to allow harvesting/gathering at lvl 20 and putting off crafting until lvl 40.  But, there's something missing about it;  I think they should have more crafting quests, maybe a practice type crafting quest for each craft at lvl 30 to allow people to try them all out before deciding.

The adventuring part of the game is fun and I'm now a lvl 60 Demonologist.  Just wanted to point that out because this thread is about my experiences in crafting which is...NOT fun.

At lvl 20, you have the option to go to the harvesting trainers in a far away zone and learn every gathering skill.  Yes, you can learn ALL of them without problem.  OK, there is some trivial problems to some of the harvesting skills.  Like, the NPC not being there.  You see the glowing question mark on the map and mini map but when you get there, you find out the NPC is, well, on vacation, I guess.  Still, that only covers one or two of them and you can always do the other harvesting skills/quests.

Now, at lvl 40, you can choose Crafting professions!  Yay!  But, be aware, that you are limited to two professions.  I tell you this and yet, you will probably pick the wrong profession.  You see, 90% of the people playing don't read the quests they recieve most of the time.  Yes, the quest giver has a line in RED telling you that whatever you choose will be permanent.  However, even then, you think to yourself,'np, if I don't like this profession, I'll just respec'.  NOOOOO, there is no respeccing. Remember that.  You're PERMANENTLY stuck with whatever two professions you choose.

I chose Alchemy.  I spend alot of time playing and the materials for making potions, food and drink drop off mobs so this seems like a great craft for me!  Also, its a consumable and I prefer to sell mass items instead of a diamond ring or a sword of destruction.  So, again, perfect for me.

Turns out I spent two weeks looking for the resources to make the potions, food, and drinks so I could turn in the quests and move forward to the next tier of alchemy.  Let me break down the three most staggering problems with alchemy:

One: the resources for alchemy tier ONE drop off mobs that have a level range of lvl 40 to lvl 49.  This means, if you need scorpion venom, you need to hunt a lvl 40 to lvl 49 scorpion.  however, alot of the mobs you need resources from only appear in certain SELF instances that scale the mobs in the instance to YOUR level.  So, if you're lvl 50+, you can never get the resources for tier one alchemy...ever, because the mobs in that instant become lvl 50+ depending on your level.

Two: the secondary ingredient needed to making a single potion, food or drink actually costs MORE than the actual potion, food or drink you are making.  Yes, you HAVE to buy the secondary ingredient from an NPC vendor.  And, yes, the vendor next to him sells the potion, food or drink you are making for a cheaper cost than the secondary ingredient PLUS you have to get the loot drop of the primary ingredient.

Three: Rarity of primary ingredients dropping from mobs.  You can kill a lvl 40-49 yeti a thousand times to try to get a Yeti Bile so you can make a lvl 40 health potion and you won't get the Yeti Bile; instead, the yeti drops...health potions.  Or, even worse, you need scorpion venom to make one food item, however, there are no lvl 40-49 scorpions in the game! rofl.  What's worse is you cannot advance to tier two(the level 50 potions/drinks/food, until you turn in the quest items(lvl 40 potions/drinks/food) which means you CANNOT advance.

Four: I thought number three was funny but actually, the fact that you cannot turn in your quest items is probably even more annoying because, apparently, you have to turn in ALL quest items for every tier one quest at the same time for alchemy. Result: a bank 3/4 full of tier one resources and quest items plus the rest of your bank and your player bag full of future tier resources and items.

Funcom Fix to these issues so far: AH now works. You can now list items for sale.  However, food and drink items cannot be seen on AH.  Also, they've now changed some resource(not alchemy) items to stack up to 1000.

Now, you probably think I'm just whining about Alchemy but NOOOO.  The other crafts have problems too; however, they have work arounds...like armorsmithing or weaponsmithing, you make an item then need to zone again before making another item(this is the solution work around for crafting your quest items).

What problem do the necromancers and demonologists need fixed?  I'm a lvl 44 demonologist but don't see what's broken.  Not that I'm saying something is broken, just saying I haven't noticed anything broken.  Everything seems to be working fine.

I'd say DAoC was flawless.  Yes, they did go down for part of a day in the first week or two.  BUT, Mark Jacobs gave credit for that day; it was a landmark moment.  After that, some games gave exp.  Latest upgrade was PotBS which gave away buffs that doubled experience for 2 hours at a time.  I was impressed with the way DAoC handled it; they communicated very clearly.  Warhammer is the same way, they'll issue a 2 or 3 page summary including all fixes and changes.  I have absolutely no problem with Age of Conan but I think Funcom needs to take a lesson or two from Mythic/Mark Jacobs.

(And, no, i'm not in the warhammer beta.  And, no, I didn't post anything about the game.  I only posted about the company that makes the game)

As to a FLAWLESS release, look at LotR.  Now, THAT was a flawless release.  No unplanned downtime, thoroughly tested patches, good content at release. Oh, and an OPEN BETA.

I played the game a couple of hours today between the 5 hours downtime in the morning and the 4 hour downtime this afternoon.  I noticed they've added a cooldown after casting our AE spell.

Just a heads up; picking that spell again, targeting the ground area, and casting, does nothing until the cooldown ends.

Oh, also, pets continue to not be needed and best not to summon one as they are a target annoyance.  Maybe that'll change next patch!

Lastly, I have trained all my feats in Electricity because I want the Possession spell.  Has anyone tried that in pvp?

Far as I know, they all look the same, but the buff you get is different.  First is mana, then health, then attack power.

I've seen alot of people with a quote saying their Magick Color but when I try, it is more than 100 characters so won't fit in the Quote section in my Profile.  I can't get it to work.  Suggestions?

Its a fun game.  Just because its not up to par technically or organizationally with other games doesn't mean it doesn't have a fun combat system and good content.

I'm hoping they'll introduce the concept of a Bank Vault.  This is the next gen mmorpg, of course.

OK, I understand the servers being down this morning for 4 to 5 hours.  We were told 12 hours prior that this would happen.  But, then, a few hours go by and they announce the servers going down AGAIN?  For an ADDITIONAL 4 hours?

Why?

Oh, almost forgot to add, in EQ2 you could SELECT the instanced zone you want to play in VS AoC's random instance.

To me, it makes a PvE server more attractive than a PvP server.  I'm a very pvp kinda person but the way AoC is set up to be instanced, means everytime I go to a new area, there's gonna be a maximum of 48 people in the instance.  I prefer to go in a zone without a set amount of people so I can either hunt people to kill or find an out of the way place.  Also, its nice to be able to surprised a guildmember, come up behind them and help them in a fight they're working on.

This brings up the guild interface and friends list.  The friend's list says who is online/offline but not where they are located(in EQ2, it would tell you the zone name and instant #).  Also, the guild list is non-existant.

This coupled with a lack of auction house and bank vault is somewhat irritating but hopefully fixes to all these issues will be taken care of in the next few weeks.

I'm getting a T1 server and have a choice of 1.5 meg or 3 meg.  Now, I currently use a DSL.

I know the T1 server is supposed to be much faster but I don't know if a T1 compared to a DSL will help any in regards to playing a game like AoC.  I mean, once you get so fast, its everything else you have to worry about, right?  Anyways, would there be a difference between playing on a 1.5 meg connection vs a 3 meg?

There doesn't seem to be any faction in this game.  Meaning, you really don't seem to have to worry about what choices you make in the quest line.  You can tell them to go to hell or be there slave and the end result is the same.

I'm a caster but hit with a staff occasionally and see white and yellow } signs around the mob.  Sometimes two or three on one side.  Sometimes white, sometimes yellow.  No clue what that means.  Also, I don't understand why there's a 6 slot hotbar on the bottom left of the screen.  What's it used for?

About the tortage quests.  Hardest quest to complete for me was getting feathers on a hill in white sands.  I went around that hill for hours trying to get up it before I finally found a vine which requires 50 in climbing to get up.

Also, as a demologist, I didn't die at all, then died sooooooo many times around level 7 and 8 until i got my 'press one button to win' button; an AE spell.

Lastly, I find it strange not to see any crafting at all.  So, I'm looking forward to getting lvl 40 and trying it out.

I use window mode and alt tab often without crashing.  however, I always get an error report about AoC not closing properly whenever I quit out of the game.

NO BANK VAULT.  If your not playing this game, imagine leveling from 1 to oh... about lvl 30 with a inventory space of about 40 slots and NO bank vault.  I'm lvl 18 now and its getting very rough.  when you head out to do some grinding, you'll notice the land has glowing bags(loot from mobs) just EVERYWHERE.

Hmm, good to know, and maybe that's been my problem making me seem weak for the last 7 levels.  As to the last poster's suggestion, I agree.  Seems to me that other games like you get near it and type /grave or something and it pops closer to you.

I don't know what the story is for dying in AoC.  I'm currently a lvl 14 Demonologist and have died maybe 30 times after hitting lvl 7; my first death was at lvl 7.  Anyways, I noticed there's no exp for deaths.  Also, there's a gravestone that pops up when you die, but clicking it makes it disappear and I see no benefit from clicking it.  So, anyways, if the res point is closer to where I'm wanting to go, I usually jump off a cliff or run into some lava.  BTW, walking into lava is instant death, not the pansy DoT dmg that most games yield.

Wish this poster made "Recommended Specs:" as a bigger text, but yeah, I've been playing Early Access with the above posted minimum specs plus the RAM:2 GB recommended and have had no crashes or lagfests.  With all the crap people have been posting, I was very surprised how playable this game is with the minimum requirements.
