Having played both games quite a bit, I find it quite honestly hard to compare the two. They really are very different games. I felt like PS took a lot of skill (mainly twitch), while TS was less demanding. Truth be told, PS in fact an FPS, while Tab is very much an mmo under the guise of an FPS.

They're similar in the fact that they're both share a futuristic sci-fi shooter setting, but not much else. They are two games that cater to very different markets.

Best just to give it a try and see for yourself. So far, I'm enjoying it immensely.
My sentiments also no matter how hard you try you just cant compare them it is at heart like comparing doom to resident evil with exception of monsters etc they just arent the same and are of a completely different playstyle.

Give it a try pm me your email and ill get you a 3 day trial invite over.

Hi people,

Currently looking for a EU clan.

My requirments

1. Fun n Friendly and of reasonable size i hate loggin on and seeing 2 active players in guild.

2.Not a die hard you have to be on and you have to be on then, i have a 7 week old daughter and she dictates my play times

3. With regards to PVP im not too bothered either way will i PVP yes am i realy bothered about PVP'n no

4. mainly english speaking

im 29 male in the uk and generally try and grab couple of hrs a night on and a good 6 hr session or so on a sunday.

if any guilds meet my requirements drop me a line here or contact me IG on Itreh to have a chat and see if we are suitable for each other.

I bit the bullet and bought TR despite playing in beta where i found it fairly poor.

Wow is all i can say how much the game has come along in a short time. Im not gonna write a full review cos my english lit sucks.

bullet points that may appeal to swg vets.

Base bustin in the form of defending or taking back a cp this is dynamic spawn system so if you and 10 friends are in base and the bane attack they are coming with enough to give you a fight.

Community - despite there being a pvp element to it im finding the coomunity to be quite mature and friendly im unclanned yet find myself conversing all night

Damage types this is my personal fave throw back to pre-cu swg some mobs are immune to diff types other mobs are damaged harder by a certain weap type, using your rifle at 1m isnt gonna gain the dps a pistol can at that range and vice versa it forces you to think on your toes and makes combat exciting

I have played many mmo's since swg-pre-cu ie EQ2, wow, eve, coh/cov, guild wars and most recently VG and despite semi enjoying some i have never truly found any the had the fun factor the community and the sheer enjoyment of TR i once again log in to have fun and become that character not just to pass some time.

seems to be sorted now reset router.

created new static ip and reforwarded all the ports.

still took couple of attemtps to get connected but just finished a uninterupted 5 hr play session.

PROBLEM is that ISP's recognise Tabula Rasa as Bittorrent P2P application and than throttle its bandwith

That is the truth

This strangeley is what i was thinking because outside of the usual lockdown on p2p traffic times i can get on no problem with a fairly uninterupted play session yet 6-12 pm weekdays and weekends im having massive connection problems.

Is that genuine because it would explain the problem im having.

8mb pipex adsl never have any problems with any other games just had a blast on UT3 and was pinging at 43 on a dutch server i just dont get what is wrong with TR still having the same problems.

Have sent another email to NC hope this time they actually give me a response im good with computers and connection issues and this one just has me at a loss.

Just what you want on a sunday afternoon and game just freezes there, or i get in and discon'd within 10 seconds or get in load across to a instance and poof or just cant get in, love the game but this is severley annoying the hell out of me now.  no response from NCSOFT tech support despite 2 emails sent last tues n weds i can still log into VG EQ2 and few fps servers fine and get an uninterupted playsession under my belt.

Ports are forwarded internet isnt dropping i just cant see how the problems can be coming from my side

its not a issue once connected i just the majority of the time cant even get connected take today for example fine at 9am but now at 11:50 am i cant get past sending server request

Anyone else from europe have massive problems connecting.

Had the game for 5 days now and only managed to connect twice i have a baby girl whos 6 weeks old and the spare bit of time i do get i would like to spend playing not spending 45 mins trying to get connected.

when the hell will mmo company's learn.

america 330million europe 550million

so why 3 us servers and 1 euro server

this alos happened on eq2 and a few other games us euro gamers get given the short end of the stick.

Heh I too quit VG over this.

Am i hardcore hell no do i object to a faster leveling curve again no.

I just couldnt take anymore of SOE's BS

When they 1st aquired VG they said they would consider the playerbase so despite screams from a lot of the community (not me i hasten to add) that xp was already too quick and the leveling curve too fast what do they go and do.

Yep a week of 50% extra xp that to me was a complete slap in the face from the Devs, they may as well have came out and just said We are the Devs we will do what we want without listening to you just keep paying us your $15.

If anyone looks over my recent posts i have been a very active supporter of VG and sony's work with it so far but no more, i know mmo's are subject to change well VG with changes on the way and dev's who just dont seem to give a flying f what there current playerbase thinks i think its time to move to pastures new.

I went through several postings and haven’t seen much which explains overall gameplay and was hoping knowledgeable players could answer a few question for potential players, namely myself!

1)      If there were 3-4 games that Tabula Rasa seems to “borrow” from what would they be and could you list the similarities and dissimilarities to those mentioned games?

2)      I saw mentioned a desire to use an Xbox 360 controller with the game.  Is game play twitch based like standard FPS games or are the controls more typical of WASD?

3)      PvP – ooh, some games work well and others do not.  Not being a huge fan of it since it normally doesn’t work well, how is TR designed around it, consensual, risk vs reward, death penalties, incentives?

4)      Crafting – is there a heavy emphasis upon crafting to replace worn out and decayed armor & weapons?

5)      POS; player owned structures?  You know, guild halls, cities, warehouses?

6)      Graphics and overall requirements of the game client – what do you run, what are your settings and does it look awesome?

7)   Anything else that stands out which should not go without mention?

I appreciate all responses.  I’m going to share this thread, and it's results, to quite a few others since I think the game just “might” fill one of those quality niches.

PC:  2.8 prescott (800mhz bus). 2x 1gb DDR (800mhz). ATI HIS x1950pro AGP 512mb (256bit);  others using something similar to this build?

p.s. in reference to #3, I am a fan of EVE Online where PvP is the foundation of everything.  There, it works very well.  I have yet to see or experiance anything remotely similar in terms of a true PvP environment; no, BF2 does not count.  :P

1. very hard to answer and ill leave it for someone else to, TR is one in its own IMO it doesnt heavily rely on anything from any other game in particular, it is of a lock on over the shoulder FPS style of game but is then unique it being in the MMO space

2. They are somewhat of a hybrid it isnt a complete twitch based experience as the target locks on and you do have a few key fired specials all in all as fast and furious as a fps but without the need to keep your mouse pointer on the target once aquired.

3. PVP is pureley guild battles and consenual and TBH has been a blast so far despite getting my ass handed to me by higher level players and the odd asshat campin wormholes.

4. Havnt tried it yet.

5. Nope no POS as yet and in the current timeline and world is not realy possible lets face it we are smack bang in the middle of a war for the time being you wont be inviting MTV Cribs round

6. everything to the max running on a pentium D 940 3ghz ram ati x1950 pro 512mb

7. A fairly active RP community in a game i just didnt expect to find it there is also a solid emote system to help support this.

Likely that SoE owns all the MMORPG rights for who knows how long.  And probably renewable at their option.

So, you would have to buy out SoE first (good luck with that).

Then, you would have to convince LA to go with yet another 2nd/3rd party arangement for SW MMORPG development and distribution.

Good luck with that, too.

Then, someone would have to come up with the millions for development of an already failed game.

Good luck with that one.

So, short answer would be : NO.

Na SOE doesnt can remeber reading a post back in 05.

During 2005 SOE and Lucasarts signed a 3 year extension to there initial deal which i believe was 5 years, it can be renegotiated but tbh is Sony gonna stump up the many many millions for a exclusive IP in the MMO space for a product that isnt even turnin 30k subs.

So by that reasoning SOE's exclusive use of the IP in MMO ends 2008 that is why i strongly believe the lucasarts/bioware game is KOTOR online there is nothing to stop its development now it just acant be officially announced until the SOE deal is up.

Hey, I just had a thought.

Maybe next year we should all create a trial account and meet up in Coronet.

It might actually be kinda fun.

We better pick a deserted server so it doesn't crash! :)

heh would that not be the intention.

one night of trial account sabotage all co-ordinated through the vet forum of mmorpg.

Mission Briefing

To fubar SOE's servers through a reign of anarchy and downright skullduggery.

7:15 all disgruntled vets create a trial account.

7:30 all vets create a toon and log into Bria poof goes the server

7:45 all vets reate a toon and log into eclipse bye bye eclipse

8:00 all vets create atoon and log into starstrider CYA

so on and so on.

I think it would fun and still continues to send the heads of mmo's that game up changes of a mmo's core will never be accepted again.

In stationary mode with VG again until the Ranger changes hit and tried everything else out there so at this point in time i have a lot of pent up anger again towards SOE for taking away the one game ive ever truly called my home.

X-Fire is and always has been a tool for FPS playing L33t speak kiddies.

oh well that explains why SWG ranks highest then

Those still crying about the NGE need to get out of your parent's basement and get a life.  It's dead, it's not coming back.  No matter how blue your face becomes or how loud you cry, it's not going to bring it back.
And I'm willing to bet that 100% of those that are crying for the Pre-CU to come back were the ones that would flood the SWG forums with whines on how broken the game was in the Pre-CU days.  It's time to take off those rose tinted glasses because Pre-CU was a broken mess.
Anyone remember losing items when crossing zone lines?  Rubber banding when just trying to travel across a planet?  Or the myriad of broken classes or broken quests?  Yeah, lets bring back the buggy, broken POS that was Pre-CU.
Fuhyo

A lot of what you're saying is STILL in SWG right now. Apparently you don't understand what it is the vets want. The vets wanted Pre CU to be FIXED!! not ripped apart and turned into the NGE, which is a joke by comparison.

I guess what you don't realize is that the reason why they did the NGE was because they couldn't fix the Pre-CU game.   They would fix one thing and it would cause other things to break.  They couldn't add new things because it would break the game, etc.  Pre-CU SWG was an unfixable POS.  Take off those rose tinted glasses, it's about time you and the others did.

Fuhyo

You are sadley misinformed.

They did have a fix for it. The had a balance system in process. It was called the CURB, they had been working on it for months before they scrapped it for the CU. They could have made the game much better and more stable, HOWEVER, they saw the money WoW was pulling in and decided that their game wasnt easy enough to get new players into. Hence the NGE came about. Dont believe me? Read some of the interviews with Smed and the Dev crew...they have all said it or made reference to it. Get your facts straight before you start trying to discredit other people.

Yes, someone is misinformed and it's not me.

The reason why CURB was dumped for the most part (the combat upgrade was Phase I of CURB) was that it would have been too costly and it wouldn't have really fixed anything without basically re-wrting the game from scratch.  NGE was the less costly option and it allowed them to keep the core game without having to radically change it like CURB would have.  LucasArts and SOE didn't want to spend that kind of man power or money and both companies also misjudged the player base by thinking they wanted more of a "Battlefront" type of game.  Yes, one of the options was to make SWG just like Battlefront but was nixed as a bad idea.

How do I know?  I was a CSR from the time of launch until I moved on to GM another game at SOE shortly after NGE launch.   Those of you that used to grind in the Singing Mountain Caves on Bloodfin might remember some of my raids there to clear the place out.

Fuhyo

From Tigg's final post

Let me first point out that the CU that did go live that you all call CU 1 is actually CU 2. There was another version of the CU prior to what you saw that IMHO was MUCH better, but for some reason or another they took it upon themselves to redo the CU before it even went live.

But the CU 1 that I was shown was the game I wanted.

So according to Tigg's it was done or at least in the process of and i know who us vet's are going to believe.

found  the artwork as i remebered they where on imagedump.

damn shame we dont have the descriptions for them as they where ace

If you just want to level fast, people say you level at about the same speed in VG as in EQ2 or wow.

You can hit 50 in 5 or so days played.

Ginding (i.e. killing mobs endlessly / gaining experience as efficiently as possible) is obsolete IMO. A good modern MMORPG should engage you and not make you feel like have to grind to get to some better end game. If you feel you need to grind I would say there is something wrong with the game you are playing.

What is happening these days in EQ2 and Vanguard is you level so fast you miss out on a lot of the low level content  and a lot of your quests grey out before you can finish them.

Lol i dont know what VG your playing there is no way in hell anyone could make it in 5 days even playig 24 hrs a day with full rest xp.

our bone idle guildie who doesnt bother with a RL job and plays 18 hrs a day recently managed 1-50 in 3 weeks but this was his 3rd toon and he was a tank so was getting groups easily enough

2 years on 10+ mmo's played but still no replacement for pre-cu/cu swg in my eyes, playing VG at the moment but it doesnt feel like my home its just being played to pass the time.

My char is called Illana in vanguard

in SWG i "WAS" Itreh Wirne she was not a char in a game she was my pseudo life outside of RL

i still return to SWG on the odd occasion through station pass pureley for a bit of a blast in my JSF in JTL
