Star Wars: The Old Republic: Tightening Up the Graphics
News Discussion « General Discussion 1/18/12 3:47:49 AM
Then Bioware should put a discalimer stating not actual in game graphics.
The Big Mac analogy is a poor one, sure it might look like shit in a box but it will taste the same as that one on the picture in fact probably better as that picture is no doubt cooked but cold products. You can't use that in respect of a PC game people upgrade hardware etc to play these things many indeed do so over the last year preparing for the game that was advertised to them, I had built a new machine recently for BF3 not TOR but jebus if BF3 had then launched without the advertised PC graphics I would have been absolutely fuming.#
It's not like you go buy a cybernetic stomach to eat the big mac in the picture over what you end up getting in the box. |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Tightening Up the Graphics
News Discussion « General Discussion 1/18/12 2:57:52 AM
I was quite possibly one of the loudest in this whole fiasco on the official forums.
I was fine with them as is I knew we had them in beta and I suspected we would get them back in time.
What I was adverse to was the outright blatant lie that a 3rd graphic option was never intended and that they played the community for fools by removing the medium option in a PTS patch but failing to add that to the patch notes whereas every other tiny little change was listed.
This stunk of Bioware treating the community like fools who didnt know any better.
This was further compounded by Mr Reids response on the issue, I was in the beta during the summer when they where enabled this was the same beta that first unleashed PVP on the swtor world so as you can imagine a lot of PVP happened with some fairly large scale wars at times and not once did I read a forum post or in game chat stating these settings fundamentaly caused worse performance in fact the only problem at that time was Ati's latest drivers caused the game to blackscreen but with sound at char selection.
What further irked me was that within 2 days of this whole fiasco Bioware released the Rakghoul press pack with HIGH REZ textures outside of cutscenes showing in both the video trailer and the screenshots. Poor poor damage limitation and a giant slap in the face to the community.
All I have to say on it really or I will wind myself up again in short theres a lot of corners been cut by Bioware rather than fixing some features that where in beta they just outright removed them to hit the December deadline. |

Originally posted by Chivalry1978 I don't disagree if the beta boads at that time which whee very active and closed forums indicated there was an issue.
The boards did not though if someone had issues they just turned the setting down, in fact the biggest graphical issue at that time was the latest Ati drivers back in July couldnt run SWTOR at all. This was a BW friends and family time with some from outside also and many of the F&F wern't gamers as such but more checking out the thing their partners, spouse frined had been working on for the last few years they where on just the systems you mentioned and if high gave an issue they just knocked it down to low or medium. There was no great problem caused by these textures that I saw or that where reported via the beta boards which at that time where the only means of communication to BW. I have no plans to leave I do enjoy the game regardless its just dissapointing that the game looks nothing like it did in beta or like it does on all BW advertising and marketing Even more so dissapointing that these worked perfectly fine where removed and the community treat like they are idiots. (OK so 70% of them are but thats not the point :) ) |

[Mod Edit] Thats why graphics options should be there.
I mention a few pages back the machines that ran high rez perfectly fine. Not 10k systems far from it.
System 1 my most expensive purchase ever a £1800 Toshiba Qosmio gaming laptop as I am away on business a lot so play in hotels a lot. System 2 a 15 2500k 8gb ram and a 480 gtx soc edition £600 system System 3 a works machine on a dual core xeon, 4gb ram and a GTS 450 a less than £450 machine if used home parts rather than enterprise parts None of those systems are 10k beasts they are the staple machines of todays gamers.
Its not hating or trolling its asking the question and dicussing why when every other game on the market can afford us these very basic of features for any game not just the mmo genre, swtor doesnt.
Not sure what you mean by this line DID YOU PLAY THE BETA OR WATCH ANY OF THE GAME PLAY FOOTAGE? Um yes and thats what we rfer t time and again these options where available in beta and every video and screenshot and press pack high resolution textures where used with not a single disclaimer stating they would not be available in game. |

Everyone has opinions and things that make games great a large part of my enjoyment of game are its visuals I never played WOW as I did not like the art style.
Of course gameplay counts and as I say I'm enjoying SWTOR I don't plan on unsubbing but I have made my feelings known both here and on the official boards I did also unsub to complete the unsub questionairre making my feelings known on this issue but instantly set that sub back up.
Graphics to me are number 1 in a game of course no matter how the game looks if it plays like rubbish I wont play it however theres many a title friends have recommended and I've never got more than 20 minutes into it due to its graphics/art style, this is especially prevelant in a MMO a game you may play for years that has such visual progression. It's sad that my 40 PVP set looks bland and boring on my character in normal play but then in cutscenes has grooves and blaster scorch marks etc I think I would rather not have them in at all than locked to cutscenes, it feels like I'm on Bullseye (80s game show in the UK) and I have just lost but theres Jim Bowen taunting me with his "heres what you could have won" catchphrase. |

High res actually gave me a performance boost on 1 machine and ran impecibly on 2 others. I am a forum ***** and spent a lot of time on the beta boards and aside the occasional they dont work well which 90% of the time could be isolated to the user having no understanding of hardware then they worked great.
The most common grumble was along the lines of "But I have a 1.5gb video card and they run bad" Yes but that 1.5gb video card was a 430 440 at 4650 etc its a low end card that proclaims 1.5gb memory.
The 3 machines I ran it succesfully on where.
I5 2500k 8gb ram 480 GTX 60-90 FPS maxed 1920x1080 I7 740QM 8gb Ram GTX 460m 40-60 FPS maxed 1920 x 1080 this was actually up from 30-50 on medium for some odd reason Xeon dual core 3ghz 4gb ram GTS 450 30-50 FPS maxed 1920 x 1080
There was no issue on any of these machines with it and unfortunately that was my last experience of beta as I did not want to burn out on another beta so I uninstalled and did not play again until release. Need I state how shocked I was to find a game that looked worse at release than it did during beta and that a key feature in colour match had been removed. Just to clarify on the colour match removal though as people seem misinformed, the official stance on the removal of the feature was something along the lines of the following. "Colour match was removed as based on feedback people did not feel a sense of armour progression as everything always fit together" So progression in a video game involves looking like a clown most of the time, another excuse I call BS on as colour match was a toggle option don;t want it then toggle it off. A myriad of other visual options where also removed June/July/August there was a wealth of sliders, AA and visual options I can appreciate these can all be confusing for some but that does not justify removal you do it like games have for the last 15 years low med high and a advanced tab. Im not quitting I enjoy the game BUT it has really soured Biowares fine name built up over the last decade with me. Advertising the game with said textures, distributing media packs with said textures, trailers with said textures, class progression videos with said textures and not once in sight a "Not representative of gameplay" on any of them. Now they have stated we will get high res textures for our own characters nad those closest to us (probably load x amount of closest players to high) by the end of Q1 well sorry thats not acceptable I have seen this systems in other games and oftn they can look worse when you hit that x cap and see a guy just behind that high res guy who is outside of your load view and looks like a blurry mess. |

Its still garbage that a game pulls a major visual option because SOME may not be able to run it, lets hope not all developers follow suit or we will all be playing games that look quake because little jonnies onboard Intel 945 can't run anything better. |

Bioware: High rez textures ARE there but we're not giving them to you!

We had high textures in beta also
Sad when the beta of a game has more features and options than the released client. |

A lot will depend on the post that Stephen Reid puts in this thread http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=151787
I can take high textures not being available for a while I just have a horible feeling based on his latest response that the answer we are gonna get is just gonna be excuse after excuse and we arent going to get the game that many played in beta or was advertised. |

Lucasarts seeing WOW's numbers and Tores and Macintyre asking why arent our numbers like that then Vogel, Walton etc who had been trying to get this past Smedley and others for some time finally getting their wish. For the bad press Smed gets he had fought for some time against it as he alongside Tiggs was pretty much the only person who saw what would happen but Lucasarts had already had there heads turned by the consiprers within SOE to radically change things up. When you have a company like Lucasarts telling you it HAS to happen theres little you can do about it regardless if your SOE, EA or Blizzard, don't bend over and take it and you lose the licence.
Every single key decision maker in the NGE happening aside Macintrye who I think is still at Leapfrog the child learning toys company and Jeff Freeman who took his own life in 2008 (although I still think Jeff took far to much stick for his minor part in the whole debacle) is now involved or has been up until recently with SWTOR they finally got to make their wow in space with "Iconic" classes.
No I'm not a SWTOR hater its just a bit bland but playing it till something better comes along. |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Bonus Series? Or Troll Series? You Decide!
News Discussion « General Discussion 1/04/12 8:00:13 AM
I enjoy the Bonus series quest content as the majority have a good arc to them without being broken up by a thousand other mundane quests.
Think of Czerka quests on tatooine, if that was 1 single arc in a nice line what a 2hour story that would be instead theres dozens of filler quests in between it that totally ruin that single story arc, the bonus series arent spoiled by such things so I enjoy them.
Ballmora I reallly enjoyed I liked the quest giver in fact shes one of my favourite NPC's to date, I enjoyed the story and delivering a final crushing blow to that planet and I thought the Colocids where awesome especially as a I had a bugged ambush by them that just resulted in 5 after 5 after 5 spawning at me this must have went on for near 15 mins with me and mako barley surviving and whilst a bug it was the most epic moment to date in game for me. |

Abou tthe same here usually in the 32:3 40:4 area of warzones with 150k damage and 30-50k healing to many jango wannabies rather than pvpr's who recognise and can play to the strengths of the class. |
