Later I joined my guild for a mass romp around Bree (about 50 of us there) which ended up in the Prancing Pony where everyone sat down for some conversation, emotes and pipeweed smoking. I haven't felt this immersed in a game world in a long time (my first go around in DAOC probably was the last) So, your experience may vary.... best to join the open beta at month's end and see for yourself... |

Any other PvP aside from monstershow?

You can create a monster, and jumping into battling with the "big boys" right away (OK, you have to be level 10...not hard to reach at all) ....no painful leveling curve to crawl up before you can enjoy pvp fun. And don't think that "pre-made" monster is going to get you very far. You need to skill him up a bit too (not as much as your player character) by completing Pve quests "and" killing other players to get more destiny points to spend on better skills and abilities. In fact, your =player character earns Destiny points which I believe can be spent on either your player character or your monster. (have to let someone with more MP experience confirm or deny this) People have been doing Pve quests in a Pvp zone for years, in almost every MMORPG game out there, on almost every FFA server ever made. I've yet to see a game where the bulk of your character advancement (aka leveling) is done through PvP content alone (although Mythic is promising that in WAR we'll be able to do so, but it will be less efficient than mixing it with Pve content) Besides, if you are a pvp purists....having a level playing field where skill is valued over gear this would seem to be the perfect solution. Of course, its not FFA, open world Pvp..and I can see what some folks don't like that idea.... that's fine... designers can't make every game fit every player.... look for WAR or better yet, AOC or Darkfall to fit those needs....

Just a few thoughts about DAOC and the new people
Round Table Pub (General) « Dark Age of Camelot 3/12/07 12:21:27 PM
Well, as to the weird names, Mythic was never one to really enforce naming conventions, and now that their backs are turned (so to speak) towards WAR there is pretty much no governance. I'm currently in the LotRO beta and am amazed at how well people obey the naming conventions. (helps that they suggest useful prefixes/suffixes to you at character creation) As to the random group thing.... its sort of an offshoot of the death of text typing. So many gamers these days are loath to actually type anything in game.... if its not voice...they don't want to mess with it. (which is strange, cause they'll IM on a cell phone at a moment's notice). Easier to just send a tell w/o any sort of introduction or preamble. I've actually received a group invite...hunted for an hour and left the group without a single person typing a thing..... (other than maybe... lets go kill boss x.... ok, ok, ok....... silence).. Most times, people don't even say "thanks for the group" when you're done...they just drop and go off on their way. The social aspect of MMORPG's seems to be suffering these days, IMO, and only a good guild can keep keep the game social. |

NCSOFT to buy SOE in the near future

This gentleman feels we're all still in the first generation.... and has some good thoughts on EvE and some of the other points raised here.... http://tagn.wordpress.com/2007/01/22/third-generation-was-there-a-second/ But his summary is pretty good.... "I believe that 20 years from now people who track the industry will lump everything so far in the same bucket. Generational references are marketing fluff so far. There can be no third generation MMOs coming soon because the second generation has not yet arrived. Generations are not marked by incremental feature changes, they are marked by paradigm shifts." |

Well, if you enjoyed WOW (and burned out on the high end raiding like I finally did) you might consider Lord of the Rings Online. Its currently in closed beta, however the open beta starts on March 30th and anyone who pre-orders (5.00 down at your local EB/Gamestop) can start playing. (Live is around 4/24 I believe) You can even keep one of your open beta characters (max level 15) when the game goes live. Combine that with the founders offer of either $9.99 per month for life (as long as you never cancel) or $200.00 for lifetime, never pay sub fees again (you will pay for upgrades however) and it works out to a good deal. If you like LotRO lore (but aren't looking for a Middle Earth simulator) and really enjoy quest based Pve content ....this is your game. PVP is the one difference, yes, despite what people say, LotRO has PVP, but its a bit different than what you are used to (Called Monster play). But if the unusual PvP system isn't an issue, give LotRO a try and see if you like it. (hey, for 5.00 deposit, that you can get back if you don't like it) what can you lose? |

I always got the impression that Sauron could never really be totally defeated...that like a bad penny he'll keep coming back.. Also, while they started with middle earth, its hardly a middle earth simulator and one day they could take the game "past" the lore and into a storyline not written by Tolken. Herasy? Maybe...but not beyond comprehension... |

Seems EvE continues to fit their target niche well and expand their sub base to remain profitable. Say what you will, but few games (if any) can claim to be gaining subscribers 4 years after launch....
so they're doing something right.... |

Aiming FPS style? or crappy point and click?

And this is true. There's a reason why most pro football players see their careers end before their mid-30's (if not sooner). Pro football (and all other sports) are the province of the young. By time you get to 40...there's no way you can keep up with the 20 year olds...not only from a strenght position, but because your "reflexes" don't compare either. Sure, some old timers survive..heck Tony Hawk stills skateboards, (more on his name/rep than his actual skill these days though) Heck, even in golf, the sport is ruled by the young. Same is true with MMORPG's vs FPS... sure , there's some people in their 30's who still have their twitch reflexes, but truth is... most people never developed good twitch reflexes..and they want to remain competitive. Point and click equalizes the playing field for them...and since they vastly outnumber those who are good at FPS/Twitch targeting.... MMORPG companies use P/C instead of the FPS targeting. That's not to say there isn't a good market for a MMOFPS out there, it can surely support at least a game or two I'm sure. But it will never be a huge marketing success in today's "older" PC gaming market. Now, if they ever come up with good PC hardware that runs MMORPG's well that is in line with consoles (500.00 or so) then more young people will join the market....and you'll see more demand for FPS targeting..... but right now MMORPG's are dominated by the $2000.00 + PC market and the players who can afford to buy such hardware (generally older game players) BTW...no offense, but all you folks under 30 are still just "kids" to me |

Better to start out with a small zone packed full of well functioning, entertaining content than a wide, expansive and mostly barren world which is a huge travel time sink. (like the game who must not be named)

I understand there needs to be balancing, and while no one cares for it, as long as the developers give players a chance to respec their characters to a new build after the change I'm all for it. (for games that have that sort of customization) Players should also be compensated financially if the nerf devalues something they spent a lot of money acquiring....
A for instance... My first MMO was Lineage 1, and my first character was a mage. Mages at that time got get a spell called "summon bugbears" which summoned anywhere from 2-8 bugbear henchman (normally you got 4) which would fight for you. This spell made mages very powerful (overpowered I suppose) therefore lots of people wanted to play one and the cost to buy the spell (it was a rare scroll drop only) was quite high. (like 1 million adena). I saved up my adena for 2 months as I painfully ground enough for the spell. I picked it up for 950,000 (a bargin at the time) and gleefully began hunting with my newfound friends. Less than a month after I got the spell it was nerfed. They decided to tie the number of bugbears you could summon to your "charisma" stat (one that no mage ever bothered to spec in as it was formerly useless) so I suddenly found myself restricted to only 2 bugbears, which was signifcant nerfing from my normal 4. This made the class far less attractive and it wasn't more than another month or so and the cost of the bugbear spell dropped to 35,000 adena. Worse, Lineage 1 had no provision to respec your characters so you could boost up your charisma to get back to at least 4 bugbears (but it meant really nerfing your mages wis/int specs) I felt totally ripped off. I had spent a kings ransom (at the time) in cash that I had worked very hard for, only to get a character that I didn't even enjoy playing anymore. (I re-rolled a fighter and a prince right afterwards) I still harbor a grudge towards NCSoft over this issue..and always look for flaws in any of their games that I play. |

Kinda Septic now about Lotro...
General Discussion « Lord of the Rings Online 3/09/07 2:33:53 PM
Here's my take on this review. The reviewer is one of those folks who really wanted a middle-earth simulation, which this game was supposed to be when it was first conceived. He is fanatical in his knowledge of Tolkenese lore and righteously defends against any attempts to bastardize his beloved franchise. But most of us aren't like him. We like playing MMO's, which are pretty much all designed in a similar way. (for better or worse as we often debate). So Turbine decided to make an MMO that borrows heavily from other successful MMO's and tosses in some LOTRO lore along the way. I like playing MMO's, and I like LotR's (even read the books one time through, thought Tolken was a bit over-rated as a writer) and for me this game is satisfactory. Now, back to the OP....you said you loved games like UO and Eve online, (two sandbox games if there ever were ones).... well then this sure isn't your game...might be on the exact opposite side of the spectrum actually. Better hold out for Darkfall, or even AOC.... but this game won't be to your liking, IMO

Should a Guild get BANNED for 1 mans actions ?
General Discussion « Vanguard: Saga of Heroes 3/09/07 1:59:06 PM
Well, the letter from Sigil pretty much explains it all, and it looks to me like they are offering amnesty to not only innocent guild members, but even the guild leaders and dupers if they'll just reveal what secret they used to dupe the gold. They are being more than fair, and I completely support the actions they are taking to enforce honest and fair game play. To the OP..if you're one of the innocent.... contact Sigil and make your peace And if you are one of the dupers.... they should be much harsher and ban you for good..... |

But seriously, 2.0 looks to be almost a different game.... so I think I'll hold off giving it a try until its been released. I disagree about one thing though...there should be no attempt by the developers to "Westernize it". Game Developers have to pick a target market right in the beginning, and stay true to it. Every time someone tries to do a major change in the vision to appeal to "everyone" the game ends up suffering for it. |
