Grind ASAP to max level is mandatory on PvP servers
General Discussion « TERA 5/09/12 11:07:32 AM
Originally posted by Yamota Well, actually I can't disagree with you, I'd have liked to see them design a better PVP system that had more safe zones, consequences for ganking, basically a way for players to better manage their risk vs reward, a la EVE. Since instead they are following the model of so many games that have come before I decided to play on a PVE server which is the first time I've ever done so. I'm just tired of playing "run rabbit run" as I level up, the "fun" isn't there anymore for me I guess.

EA Blames Casuals For Declining Subs
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 5/09/12 10:43:34 AM
I'm insulted, I left SWTOR, so ergo he's calling me a casual player. My wife thinks I have a MMORPG addiction so there's a difference of opinion here.

Originally posted by Homitu This is a very interesting factoid and I was wondering if there's a website somewhere that tracks this sort of information. You make a good case for a June launch based on the previous patterns of GW1 and other titles.

Originally posted by Wickedjelly I agree with you, amazing how many folks are accusing Amazon of "lying" because this information doesn't agree with their own hopes regarding a launch date. I'm more likely to believe they did receive some sort of letter from ANET informing them that June isn't going to happen, not so sure the new date is really confirmed. And yes, since they are taking people's money for this game (full price right) they probably have to (or at least feel obligated to) give them some sort of estimated release date.

How in the hell is this top voted(released)/most popular on this site!?
General Discussion « TERA 5/09/12 7:22:10 AM
Originally posted by AtmaDarkwolf It does sort of look like the OP either joined the forums (or made an alt account) simply to bash TERA. And looking at this post, I question whether the OP likes MMO's at all, since it would appear he really doesn't. Perhaps a different genre is in order?

Grind ASAP to max level is mandatory on PvP servers
General Discussion « TERA 5/09/12 7:03:02 AM
Originally posted by Teekay I'll agree with you on the levels, in fact a zerg of 20 lower level players (like level 25-40) could take a single level 50 down and on the FFA server Mordred my guild Shadowclan did so regularly. Not sure that's really possible in most other titles like TERA. Gear I disagree with, as you noted, in the day crafted gear was especially important, with 100% quality being highly sought after and costly. Also we all used to use spreadsheets to tweak our gear templates (esp at level 50) to ensure maximum damage/defense. While it was true that many people had similar gear at top end, then you had to deal with the realm rank imbalances, and a Realm Rank 5 was actually considered to be a level "51" character by most folks due to the advantages it had over anyone of lesser ranks. Then came TOA, and it added new skills (and gear) that were wildly overpowered at the top end, I recall one high level skill that let a healer tie their HP's to a tank in their group, so that you had to kill the tank first before you could damage the healer. These new factors required lots of PVE activity to obtain and largely have been attributed to the general decline of the game's population at the time. Oh yes, another DAOC triva point regarding mob fights, (on Mordred at least) if you were engaged with a mob and another player attacked you the game reset your health to 100% and removed the aggro of the mob from you. (unless of course, the first blow managed to one shot you, which my Hunter could do with a lucky crit on someone of low enough health) Haven't seen any other game do this since then, but it was a brilliant idea. BTW, many people consider Shadowbane to be one of the great PVP games, despite all its flaws. Never mistake your desire for fair and balanced PVP to be the only way people like to fight, your view is just the most popular.

Originally posted by Mellkor Yeah, i thought the same thing, apparently the OP missed most of them. I'm hoping that TSW brings to the table more originality than what races we do/do not get to play. Well, looks like we'll soon find out.

Originally posted by SEANMCAD Whatever are you talking about. Ever hear about EVE? You can be the leader of an alliance of literally dozens of corporations and command thousands of players/ships and lead them in a campaign against the rest of the known galaxy. You can command vast empires of weath, attempt to bring the economy to its knees (see the various exploits of the the Goonswarm including the most recent Burn Jita campaign) or sneak in and single handedly destroy such an alliance. As others have said, other titles such as Lineage 1/2 gave you control of a keep that let you set taxes, earn revenue for your guild/alliance though I agree there hasn't been enough titles that provide these sorts of mechanics.

Grind ASAP to max level is mandatory on PvP servers
General Discussion « TERA 5/09/12 5:04:44 AM
Originally posted by Yamota You said this before, that there were many MMORPG's where gear and levels don't affect PVP much, besides Planetside and EVE I'm wondering which ones those were. (UO, AC perhaps?) Starting with Lineage 1 and continuing with DAOC, Shadowbane, Lineage 2, AOC, AION, WOW, EQ1, EQ2, Rift, COX, Fallen Earth, Runes of Magic, SWTOR, Vanguard are just a few of the titles I've played where levels>gear>skill. In fact, you could say with a few rare exceptions, this is the trademark design of most major theme park MMORPG games, which is why many people hate it, they are always looking for fairness in their PVP. TERA just continues this long standing design tradition, which oddly enough seems to be a surprise to many people in this thread, quite surprising to me that so many expected something more along the lines of GW1/2 which IMO are the anomolies in the genre, and not the rule.

Originally posted by Buttski If you are already level 60, you were playing it wrong. No game will ever be able to satisfy your need for more content.

Originally posted by Theonenoni Rumors about the demise of the P2P payment model have been greatly exaggerated. I agree, TERA will end up F2P one day, but not after they've collected subs for a set period of time, which is the payment model/plan most titles shoot for these days.

Dark Age of Camelot: Call to Arms" a DAoC Community Event TONIGHT!

Originally posted by mmoDAD See EVE. For what it offers, DAOC was a remarkable experience (still is I suppose). I preferred to play on the FFA (red) servers however I was part of a minority unfortunately. RIP Andred/Mordred |

Originally posted by Quizzical Between 2 closed beta's, the open beta and launch period I have run the starter island and leveled one of each class at least once, (to level 12-16) for a total of 14 times. OMG, how could I stand to do so? All those boring quests, repetitive mobs and small, walled terrain? Because I enjoy the combat. Even at levels 1-12 each class plays slightly different and I enjoy trying to kill things using the different approaches/skills. (Damn, playing as a Sorc is tough, never seen such a squishy class) In many situations I don't care to read the quest text, I just gather up the quests as quickly as I can, march out and lay waste to whatever happens to get in my way. Heck, I even go back for repeatable quests, and then crush the same set of NPC's again and again just for the fun of it. Now on the other hand, sometimes I read the quest text (especially the storylines) and they are quite good (ok, decent at least) and when I took down a traitor it was actually sort of sobering in its conclusion. (and satisfying, the guy was a douche) So no, TERA is no SWTOR in terms of breaking new ground in quest story lines, but I find them sufficent to the task, giving me great reasons to kill stuff, which is my primary interest in MMO's. Kill 10 rats? Just call me the Orkin™ man. |

Uh, yeah... while I enjoyed fishing in WOW, there's a few other issues I'd like the TERA Dev team to focus on right now, particuarly in the areas of Guild vs Guild on the PVE servers.

Tera - the most boring repeatable mobs in recent mmo's
General Discussion « TERA 5/08/12 7:56:10 AM
Originally posted by JudgeUK Well, calling you a liar was a bit harsh, but I am curious about your one comment about there being Jesters all over the place (and you're level 30). I've only found them in like two areas of Porpori lands, (at level 37) so just curious where else you are finding them. Or maybe you and I have a different idea of what a Jester is? And I'll agree, there's definitely some npc reuse, heck, they keep reskinning the boars in almost every place, but overall I don't feel the level of aggrevation you do with regards to the resuse. Could just be personal tolerance I suppose.

Anyone got a game in mind I can play for long term instead of a few months.
LFGame « General Discussion 5/08/12 6:36:20 AM
Originally posted by Quirhid Exactly what I was thinking, at least these days it seems. Maybe in the future there will be a title that grabs me long term, but now I just hope to get 2-3 months of fun out of a MMO before moving on to the next one. Well, at least the variety is good. OP already has played EVE, perhaps Uncharted Waters Online, heard that takes some time.

Tera - the most boring repeatable mobs in recent mmo's
General Discussion « TERA 5/08/12 6:09:15 AM
Originally posted by Amjoco They are exaggerating, pay them no mind and go enjoy yourself. I'm level 37 right now and don't see any real issue with the repeating npc's. Sure, there's some re-use, but you'll be surprised at the new ones they add, even if you find yourself kiling some elks once again. Some of the BAMs are particularly entertaining in their design.

Originally posted by GoldenArrow C'mon now, every hour a message pops on in your screen telling you how many hours you've played, and advises you to play responsibly, you're just not listening to their advice. (as I saw 4, 5 hours go by regularly over the weekend) It is pretty fun at times..... |

Originally posted by adam_nox Aw come on, ANET fans will bend over and take whatever is handed to them, they're so looking forward to this title that the Dev's can literally do no wrong. But I agree with your assessment, following standard patterns they only way I can see them going much past 3 months is if there is something really broken, and that doesn't seem to be the case coming out of the first beta.
