Well it already passed AoC. The question is just by how much.  I dont think Warhammer will get over 1 million subscribers, it's too much pvp focused and you can only attract so many of those. But to beat AoC you only need something like 100k subscribers and there is just no way WAR is gonna drop subscribers at same speed as AoC and probably WAR can manage 500k+ first years. In a few months you will probably just need 50k to beat AoC if it's still around to be beaten.

DFO stands a good chance to pass AOC, even if it never releases.

I gave up playing any other game type but MMORPG's about 7 years ago.  Sure, I tried a couple of other games since, KOTOR, HL-2, and a few others, but quickly set them aside and returned to my MMORPG game.

Since I thought D2 sucked compared to D1 I can't see myself bothering myself with D3.

Now SC2 is a game that I'll be willing to give a try to, maybe it will succeed where so many others have failed.

I confess, I'm skeptical too. If they really pull this off with everything they've promised it will considered the start  of the new era of MMORPG's and Taos will go down in gaming history as a true legend.

But that's not the way to bet.

This thread proves one thing.  No game can appeal to every gamer.  The OP complains its too slow in leveling, while I think you'd find a larger crowd that thinks is a bit too easy.

But the most important players are those who think the game is 'just right' for them and they enjoy playing it.  As long as they have fun and are willing to pay for it, the game is a success and will continue on to great things.

I'm not sure yet if WAR's for me, but I'm not going to bag on it because my personal tastes lean towards a different style of game.

Oh yeah, while I'm sure no one cares, I'm still playing.

Too much information, all of is suspect.

Here's what I've observed in the real world.  My son is almost 16 and has been playing MMO's for about 8 years now.

He has about 10 close friends in the RW who play MMO's with him. (male and female).

Not one of them has ever heard of MMORPG.com nor would bother to visit nor post in a forum such as this, despite the fact they do love posting on Myspace and other chat areas.  Forum posting is the province (for the most part) of older gamers, and not the young as you seem to think.

I would challenge your assertions based on these observations and state that I do not believe the average age of posters here is anywhere near the ones you have deduced from your reasoning.  I think it is much higher.

Not quite sure why you are getting so stressed out when other posters disagree with you in an intelligent manner, perhaps you are too young to hold these sort of conversations?

People like to root for a winning team, that's why they talk up their favorite games and run down others.  No different than folks who root for their favorite professional sports teams while talking trash about their opponents.  Same concept, just applied to MMO's instead of sports.

Don't try to overthink this stuff so much, the explanations cannot be boiled down to simple mathmatics.

BTW, to those of you who said you'd walk away from a discussion with a room full of teenagers, you're the ones showing a lack of maturity, teenagers actually can have quite a good deal to talk about (I'm on the third one that I've raised now) and sometimes you need to take the time to listen.

But someday when your older you'll come to realize that.

And many would argue that no one can actually deliver a game like this.....

Ultima Online that was very similar to Darkfall had great PvE and as i see it the best PvP of any MMORPG so far.

You have any idea how large the Darkfall map is?

It takes 8 hours to run from north to south and east to west.

The very large Darkfall map will secure for good PvE, since you wont run into PvP oriented people 24/7.

The described advanced AI will also be more challenging then what we're used to.

Darkfall will be a great PvE game as i see it.

Also one of the best RP games available.

You know, I've not discussed this before, but I feel its a bit of an illusion to think that the size of the DF map will provide any sense of protection for a player.

DAOC in its heyday had a pretty large world too, but the trouble was there were certain camps and dungeons that had the best loot or provided the most experience leveling (not a DFO issue I'll grant) so people tended to congregate at those spots, and of course, everyone knew that and made sujre to make regular patrols of said locations.

I remember, I used to go out of  my way to find remote spots of less than desireable mobs and yet somehow, the enemy would eventually show up and gank me.

Now maybe DFO's map is on an order of magnitude 10 or 20 times larger than DAOC, and then perhaps this premise will hold true.  But if not, don't be surprised at how resourceful some folks will be in terms of finding you at your favorite hunting spots.

And on a related note, DAOC had a great anti-ganking mechanic, if a player was engaged with an NPC mob and someone attacked them, their health would regenerate to full instantly.  This gave them a fair chance to either fight or flee the attack. I don't think DFO has anything like this which is unfortunate.

I ran into this issue this week. I created my character and played on my laptop.  When I logged in for my second session I used my son's desktop and low an behold, I couldn't find my character, it wasn't showing up on the character counter (and I couldn't remember the server.)

So I went back to my laptop, and yep, character was still there.  So I logged back on the desktop, opened up the server and magically, my character appeared.

Doesn't sound like you had the same issue, and maybe I didn't really identify the root cause which I though was caused by me switching between computers.

Not sure what you are talking about. I used to play on DAOC's Mordred server, and while the rules were clearly FFA PVP (even more so than DF will be) we spent a lot of time doing PVE activities. In fact, the only Dragon raids I ever won was on a PVP server, and that was despite attempts by people trying to disrupt the process.

Mordred had safe zones. It also wasn't exactly the most populated server. Leaving aside most gamers were thicker skinned than they are now.

Agreed, Mordred had exactly 3 safe zones, the captiol cities, everything else was fair game (except the housing zones, which was a shame)

And Dred's population was more due to the fact that the core DAOC RVR gameplay /rule sets were modified half heartedly and never properly supported.  We always felt if Mythic had ever really put some serious effort into making a real PVP server it would have done far better.

Hopefully DFO will realize this dream and we can find out if it would have played in Peoria.

Meh! Some allowances have to be made in a game to keep it fun, so since I really have no idea what sort of propulsion these ships use that enable them to starhop the entire known universe, even if its a shuttle I have to accept "magic" physics.

They are powered by some sort of cool technology that has a virtually in exhaustable power supply that can be quickly regenerated somehow by simply stopping for a few minutes.  Is it so hard to believe they are powered by some sort of gravitatiional /inertia type drive that only moves the ship when power is applied, and stops them when its taken off?

Unrealistic, maybe, but we are talking about a fantasy universe here, so sure, maybe its possible.

I guess I don't try to over think these things, I just enjoy EVE for what it is.

(And in a fantasy game like WOW I never questioned how I could run across the entire battlefield or world while wearing full plate mail and tirelessly swing a sword that was as tall as I was and probably weighed just as much)

It has shit loads of pve content its not exactly pve unfriendly. Just because you can be killed doesnt mean you cant pve. Its pve friendly in the respect that it isnt lacking in this area, it has plenty of features and content and its pvp friendly because it has the features to allow you to pvp at will.

Play it for three months then come back. You're giving me theoretical nonsense about a genre of gaming I've been playing for years. I'll pit my experience against your guesswork any day.

Now, if you mean, theres no place you'll be able to PvE safely with no chance of being killed, yes, you are correct, there will always be that chance, but that's what makes this sort of game more challenging and fun than a purely pve game.

Oh yeah, about the looting thing, don't worry, I won't be wearing my best gear when I'm out solo pveing, it will be something I can afford to lose (a dozen times over if necessary)

The good stuff...that will be saved for war parties where I'm pretty sure we're gonna own, no fair fights where this is concerned.

Well OP, if you came to defend AOC against the forces of darkness, you came to the right place.

You did mention you wanted to hear from folks who've played the game recently, and as I quit in mid-August I can't comment on the current state of the game, other than to say perhaps even if its better now, its been too little and much too late.

But hey, I play EVE, and many folks hate that game just as much as AOC and you know what? I don't care, because I enjoy playing it. That's all that should really matter to anyone I suppose.

Yeah, you can't get too concerned over fluctuations that seem to occur every time a new game comes out. Give it a few weeks and it will all settle back to normal.

Besides, EVE is a game where if you enjoy playing it, you'll give it a 9, and if you dislike it, you'll give it a low score. (ok, perhaps thats true of all games).  Since its fan base is small, hard for them to influence it much.

But hey, if you like EVE, (like I do) keep on playing secure in the knowledge on how good our game is, and how its a shame more folks haven't come to appreciate it.

As mentioned, once the next game is released, people will forget about WAR and move on to another game.  Of course, then it might be like LotRO, mostly forgotten and followed by its small core of fans.

Probably better if the buzz continues due to its overwhelming popularity, a la WOW.

OP, I just wanted to say I salute your attitude about all of this.  Many people run into challenges in the tutorial and come to these forums to whine about how hard EVE is or that its too complicated to figure out.

Your willingness to stick to it and go back and try new things to overcome obstacles impresses me and I think you might just be perfect for the EVE universe.

Good luck and safe flying.....

For those wich dont care about grafics that much well i believe is the game for them and i hope for you to get what you want but well just not for me.

Since I thought the graphics looked fine and were comparable to most modern MMO's the problem must lie with you or your hardware.

So what your really saying  is, Darkfall is not FFA PVP, but rather a controlled PVP environment.

This isn't a bad thing, and few games don't have some sort of control on PVP,  just a matter of degree is all.  Yes, I know, you can kill members of your own alliance, so that technically makes it FFA, but I consider penalties such as this limitations on a player's freedom, hence less of a FFA game than it could be.

Old school Mordred server in DAOC was more of a FFA PVP server, you could kill anyone, of any race at any time outside of the main cities except for your own guildmates.
