If the engine didn't change one bit of the appearance, but simply improved the lag and compatibility issues, it would be a success. That they are adding in a new environment with better water and fauna and shadows is a bonus.  The game will get new players because of it, simple enough.

No Venacademy, they won't. People will see the stark contrast between low res avatars and high res everything else and say WTF?!?

And then they will leave the same as they do now.

I'm really starting to wonder if you're AmazingAverys' counterpart. Take off the rose colored glasses, man.

I'll have to agree with Wise on this one.  My observation has been that people are almost overly obsessive about how their avatars look and respond, and put less stock in improvements to the overall game world.  Sure, you might get a few new players, and some folks come back for a short time, but don't expect them to stay.

Hmm, wow. This makes Eve sound even less fun than when I wasted some months of my life in it. Now you can't even fly around in highsec without getting wardec'd and shot up by players who have, thanks to Eve's skilless wonder system, an unmatchable advantage in pilot skills, agent faction and money over you.

Every time I hear about crap like this in Eve, the image that comes to mind is schoolyard bullies conning younger kids into "playing a really fun game", then putting them all on the other team so they can gang up and beat them up to get a feeling of power. While the teachers watch and applaud, because the bullies pay the teachers more than the victims do.

How. Frickin. Lame.

Don't critcize that which you fail to fully understand.  Actual pilot skill and tactics play a far more important role in combat than the mathametical diffferences in SP's.

In WoW when you flee an enemy, you can jump in the air, do a 360 spin and shoot the enemy with an instant attack while you were facing him.

Can't do that in many other MMOs.

It's one of the few combat moves that require a little practice.

Any kind of hitch or lag would ruin this move.

You just nailed it.  I remember what I hated about WOW, it was this form of combat move.  Instant casts, jumping etc.   I'm used to DAOC where mages and archers had to be planted in place for several seconds to cast/shoot.

It needs another option, which is my choice, 'No, its not what I expected, but I am going to stay anyway'

i think that would be the "no, but im going to give it another month" option.

The poll is very balanced, kind of surprising.

Yes, clever poll

I THINK i would have continued playing if it wasn't for the bland PvP and the non-stop go and fetch me testicles kind of quests

It absolutely fails in giving me an experience different from WoW, it feels and plays like another clone, AoC, Lotro, Tabula rasa, EQ2.

eq2 is not a wow clone, its the outher way around.. wow is a eq clone

Well, since EQ 2 and WOW both launched about the same time, I guess they are both EQ clones

How about, I'll believe it when I see it in action.  Only thing I have faith in is God, Aventurine's going to have to prove to me that this works.

Because it is all pointless when your hard work and accomplishments actually have no impact on the game world proper.

You're ready for the next level.  If you want to play a game that has this now, try EVE.  But if its not your bag (and I understand, its not for everyone) then keep an eye out for DFO later this year (I hope)

Yeah shes a graphic designer or perhaps concept artist or somewhere along those lines i think. Either way she works for the company and so has a better knowledge of where this game is heading than anyone not working there i think it is safe to asume.

Assuming of course, she's a real person and really works at Aventurine.  Not really any way tell now is, there.  In fact, you might not be real either. Or me?

So who knows what this game is really going to be like until they get a chance to see and play it.  When that day comes, then I'll know for sure, until its released, its all just vaporware to me.

I'm sorry you feel this way, and in fact, while there are certainly a lot of jerks, it really isn't true. I've met far more good people than bad in EVE, as long as you can consider someone who destroys your ship and pod still good.  (its all part of playing the game)

I suspect that fixing this complaint isn't the only issue you have with EVE so probably doesn't matter if you're wrong about this one.

My only real complaint is that some of the biggest and best ships in the game (like motherships and titans) are a little too special, in other words only a very small handful of pilots in EVE really ever will have a chance at flying one, and since my RL prevents me from being a hardcore player (nor do I have the political skills that this entails as well) and I know I'll never fly one of them.

But hey, this game lets me get further towards the final 'endgame' goals than just about any otherone out there, so I really can't complain I suppose.

Yes, as we learned recently in our first time being wardec'd, unaffliated alts play a huge part of the battle.  Everything from spying on and within your corporation, following your fleet around for intel, to actually suicide ganking you in smart bombing ravens, it was quite a lesson in the reality of empire combat.

As the war played out, we learned all about being camped in a station, breaking out of a camp and we chose to fight to the death, and we died by the hundreds.  While most of our losses were in small ships, the count/isk count was pretty high, but as mentioned, every time we did manage to take one of them down it really heartened us and made it all worthwhile.

It was a great learning experience, and we finished every battle giving our opponents a "GF" in local.  PVP is really what EVE's all about and for many of our players, was their first taste of what it involved.

Soon, we'll be unleashing some mayhem of our own. We've changed.

Sometimes it's better to just accept it for the sake of a more fun and full game overall.  I think they made the right choice.

Well, most probably they could have used boats like they were historically used prior to the cannon, for boarding other boats or delivering troops to a destination.

But if you want ship vs ship combat, have to have cannons of some sort to make it fun.

The game sounds great on paper, and when and if it releases I'm really looking forward to playing it.

However, that said, we really haven't seen much of it (and a shame OP  posted the you tube video link, that really sucks and the full video was much better) and won't know if Aventurine can deliver until sometime before the end of the year.

Hopefully the wait is almost over.

I dunno OP, your name isn't spelled the same as the SC character, and not like thats popular enough to really cause a fracus.

Most MMO's will restrict names that are obvious trademark infringments and some don't like them if they destroy the players immersion in the world (few of these anymore).

Unfortunately the nature of PC gaming is you must continually upgrade your hardware and drivers, especially in the area of video cards.

And you could buy a 100.00 card that would run WAR just fine, I've got a cheap desktop from Acer (450.00) that I bought this spring and it can run WAR (on low settings of course).

One mistake many folks make is in assuming that because their past games ran fine, the new ones will.  Past performance is no indicator of future results.

Horrible writer, no, dry and not that interesting, yep, that describes my thoughts on it. I read a lot, and have read some of my book series 3 and 4 times through.  Yet somehow, while I did manage to read through 4 of his works, they didn't inspire me enough to even read them a 2nd time.  Maybe its because I'm more of a Sci Fi reader than fantasy.

But back on topic.  I think OP's assessment is pretty fair regarding the 4 games he chose to compare, sure, he missed a few, but who has the time to compare the top 10 or 20 fantasy MMO's of all time, would take weeks.

Now which one's for me, sadly, while I've tried them all, none of them provide what I need, because they lack the one factor which the OP went on to state was an illusion, which is player influence on the world.

I play EVE, and unless you've played a game like it (UO, Shadowbane) you just don't understand how much a player can influence a game, and how much that adds to the gameplay.

In EVE I can literally put together a corp, alliance, empire that could dominate the whole of 0.0 space, assuming I have the talent to pull it off. (and there are currently players hard at work trying to achieve that goal)

Even in the safe Empire space, players can use the WAR Dec feature to intimidate and plunder even the most powerful of foes, and terrorize the pve population and force them into submission.  You can literally force another corporation or alliance to disband by your actions, and this is a powerful influence in the how the game plays.

But I digress, right now, there really isn't a fantasy MMO out there that has what I need, I'll be waiting for one of the new ones, DFO, Mortal Online etc, to fulfil my need for a more interactive world that I'll really feel a part of.

Banning in the first week when thousands of "extra'" keys were given away was always going to lead to this. Naturally it was going to get much harder for them when real subs finally went in. They just capitalised on that time to make themselves look good :)

so you're accusing them of delibrately giving out extra keys to boom the gold sellers in the game so they can in turn ban them "to make themselves look good"?

hahaha, how's that tinfoil hat working for you?

Well, he's got to be careful near microwave ovens

Age of Conan is by far the worste mmo I've ever bought. Ive played many many mmo's since the early days of EQ and its a total fail of epic proportions. The only mmo that had a worse release was Dark and Light (now shut down) and it cost less than half of what AoC cost to make. How a company can spend $50,000,000 on a piece of garbage like AoC is beyond me. What did they think people would do after they hit 80? Gather resources for a city that doesnt do anything?

There is so many things wrong with this cow dung they call an mmo, I havent the desire nor the time to list them all.

Now if you wanna play a mmo that is fun, adictive, DONE, few bugs, good pvp, good crafting, low lag, decent graphics, awsome pvp system, etc etc then go play Warhammer. I havent had this much fun in a mmo since the launch of SWG back in 2003.

Dont take my word for it. Look at the population after 2 weeks compared to AoC after 2 weeks. Its not even close which game is better. AoC was screwed from the start. Unbalanced classes that Funcom nerfed and kept nerfing and are still nerfing with every patch. Look at the big picture and you will see that AoC shouldnt even be in the same sentence with Warhammer.

You wanna call me a Warhammer fanboy? Go ahead, but I was also a fan of AoC before and right at release so I just call em like I see em.

Just one question, what are you going to do once you hit 40, retake cities/keeps over and over that basically don't do anything?

I dunno, seems the end game for both is pretty similar, though the journey there is considerably different.

I really like the encouragement I'm seeing here.

I started EVE about a month ago, and find myself playing "passively," merely checking on my skills and training more, maybe once per week doing a mission or two. I'd really love to get really immersed in the game, as it's just so incredible (And yes, despite the cliched use, "deep"). I think it's the perfect blueprint of future MMORPGs (Although I find the combat to be quite a chore; not just because it's difficult, but to me it [is] in fact a little dull).

If anyone could also help me get into the game, I'd love the help.

My name is Proht Faldon. I'm running a Thorax and training for Interceptors at the moment (I figure the faster ships might make it more enjoyable since it currently feels like I'm playing space underwater [The slow seeming movement in battle]).

Thanks!

You need to get into some PVP action. That slow seeming movement will suddenly seem far too fast when you have an interceptor locking you in place and a Vagabond blasting your hull off of you.

Look for a good PVP corp and get fighting, (FW's are good too) and you'll find the game to be much more fun. (and you can fight in a frigate, no need for the fancy ships)

Just do not expect it to be similar to SWG pre-cu,cu or even NGE, no deep crafting, no player citys or houses...it will be all story and combat, they said they are not making a world simulator, so basicaly yeah just like Kotor but online, which for me is just blah kotor was an awesome single player game but does not fit as an MMO at all in my opinion, SWG is the only MMO i even cared to play beause it was so much different than single player offline games.

Do you have a link to where they said they 'weren't' making a 'world simulator'?

You can read a lot about their plans including this statement right here: (its about 1/2 way down)
