Indeed.

I haven't checked GW2's features yet. But if they provide PvP at least as good as GW1's one, and add open pvp, this might be heaven for PvP players :)

I don't know of any game other than GW that provides instanced PvP with real teamwork.
WoW has instanced PvP with teamwork in the form of Arenas, but it kinda got what you call "Massive grind requirement before one can even attempt a decent level of PvP".

Actually, I'm less demanding than you are, I've been looking for a no-grind PvP game w/ or w/o instancing and I couldn't find one.

MMO Producers have the social responsibility to provide more diverse content & mechanics, so that our hours.. days.. months.. of gameplay are fun at any moment.
Make Cyberpunk Ages happen sooner please.

lol you again. You chasing me or what?

Did I say there wasn't WoW players who like to PvE and PvP ?
Did I say _ALL_ got on PvP servers by mistake ? (read closely, i really wrote "some")
Did I say WoW players were noobs ?

No.
I was just stating that the 2:1 PvP/PvE server type ratio does not necessarily reflect players' preferences.

To think you were talking about "keeping an open-mind" in that previous thread...
If you want to go on a e-fight with a wow-hater, you go find someone else. I'm not one as I told you earlier. geez...

lol, the ONLY one?
You haven't played many MMOs, have you?

Besides, as it was said above, people may like or may not like the look&feel of WoW.

Though I see your point : Maybe MMO artists should try to think out of the box whenever possible.

Teflon, many people on WoW PvP servers don't like PvP.

- some didn't look at the server type when they created their char
- others joined friends on their server, which happened to be PvP
- some thought "normal" would limit their gameplay. PvP sounded cooler
- many regret their choice because they realize they don't like being ganked
- ...

There is no 2:1 PvP/PvE player ratio in WoW. Far from it.

Damn, fifth page...well, let's try ^^:

I'd be very thankful to anyone giving me his/her buddy key.

Of course, I will provide the community or that person if he/she prefers with my buddy key when I buy the game. Thanks in advance.

It's not that hard to find a group for PvE in Guild Wars. You can quite easily find a pickup-group even for elite "end-game" missions.
Besides, there are a lot of PvE guilds (despite GW being PvP-centered) which will try to recruit you.

For PvP though, you might be able to find a PvP guild. But even so, their overall level might not be very high. Good PvP guilds require their recruits to have strong PvP experience.

So, if you want to PvE, I'd say yes. If you want to PvP, I'd say no.

(I'm not sure I've answered your question)

Way to "keep an open mind"!

I do the exact same thing, and yet I see totally different things. I guess we are both close-minded, then?

Anyway, there's no point in going on with this debate since there isn't one. The fact is Wow-haters, like me, actually don't hate WoW players, Blizzard or even WoW. We hate that other companies don't make an original game for us who want something else. Then, we see WoW lovers - or at least people we blindly assimilate as WoW lovers - post on the forums dedicated to new MMOs (for instance) and ruin it with comments like "WoW is so better than this" or "There is PvE instancing ! It's not like WoW, sucks!" (*), fearing that it might influence game developers even more to copy WoW and never produce the game we desperately want (see my sig) and will gladly pay heavily for.

(*) : I did that too apparently. I didn't realize this thread was in the WoW section :S

P.S.: about the "I assure you". Obviously, it was an opinion, not a fact. Every single post in this forum expresses an opinion. I see many people here trying to pick on this to try and escape the conversation. You've got to understand that not everyone is English native and foreigners might not be used to say "I think" a the beginning of every sentence ^^

Peace.

Way to pigeon hole people in one sweeping statement, bravo!!

As a recent poll on this very forum attested (..and i am sure if you actually asked a few players rather than just making assumptions), a high percentage of people that play WoW have either come from other MMO's or have tried others and come back again. It is all too easy to drop labels into a thread like "noobs", "kids", "lazy MMO'ers" but it still doesn't take away the fact that the game is good, for whatever reason people choose and that is why it is played by so many.

lol, you are on an mmorpg forum. Of course, people who come on mmorpg.com and play WoW have tried other games !
But I can assure that the ones who don't bother going on forums like this one, and who obviously represent the biggest part of the player base, never played another MMO or - as I said earlier - came back to WoW because, for most of them, their friends/wife/whatever wouldn't try another game.

The game features presented in the OP's first post are all present in Eve Online...except for the "mech" part. Well, I guess a Eve-clone is at least far better than a WoW-clone.

Hmmm, since skill progression depends on real time like in Eve. I will try the game as soon as it comes out, just in case I like it.

Because, although I thought Eve to be the perfect MMO in every other way, starting Eve 3 years after it came out and, thus, not being to compete to the oldest players, was a big turn-off for me. I will forever regret not discovering Eve sooner.

What's the number one reason why people play WoW? When I ask, it's usually, "Because my friends play it."
'Nuff said.
QFT. The same answer I get too. And the same I gave when I was playing it.

Many WoW people don't realize there are other games out there. And even if they did, the "effort" required to move a group of friends from a game to another is just too big.

Why WoW is successful? Because the previously most respected game company in the world made it... and now people are stuck in it.

"Neo...
The WoW Matrix has you."

Unfortunately, there is no spoon.

As the OP said, it's personal taste, obviously.

I think one can say he doesn't like a game even after only 10 minutes of play. Why? Because there are many things you can see in 10 minutes (UI, movements, mechanics, pace, immersion, mob behaviour, combat, graphics, ...) - especially when you have played a lot of games and have seen the many possible bad patterns used within the genre.

I also am a hardcore gamer (tried approximately 15 MMOs with 4000 hours of total play time).

I was actually really surprised to see LOTRO as the game with the best rate on mmorpg.com.
For the 10 minutes I forced myself to play it, it was like I was playing an Asian grindfest yet again. The only thing that I liked was the face of my dwarf, nothing else.
I like Tolkien's universe, but the game... yuck !

Unfortunately, I have no MMO to suggest (lots of WoW-clones right now).
The 2 games I really like were :
- Eve Online, which you already played,
- Guild Wars, which is nearing its end (Guild Wars 2 being in development) and which can be frustrating if not doing high-level PvP/GvG (which is not possible if you start right now because no "leet skillz" guild will even consider recruiting you :S)

You might want to try other non-MMO online games for the next couple of years though. That's what I'm doing right now. I fear our most-wanted godsend MMO is not coming out soon. :S

XP in PvP shouldn't have to be a suggestion.

How is that logical to earn XP by killing stupid kamikaze monsters by the dozen, and not for killing players with a minimum of combat sense ?

This feature should be implemented in every MMO out there, not just WoW (actually, nothing can save WoW PvP-wise).

Be careful. Okay, Dreamfall is very promising, but it's also because it's mostly vaporware. I fear that, if Darkfall ever comes out, many people will just be disappointed because - like many other MMO companies are doing these days - they might not respect their promises.

Not all MMOs follow the grindfest-pattern. That doesn't mean they don't work. Guild Wars is a good example. There is no item grind in it. Sure, some PvE players are farming for good-looking item skins, but that's it... no loot with amazing stats. The game is based on skill. Also the business model (no subscription) is different than your average wow-clone. And it still worked.

Of course, ArenaNet made less money with GW than Blizzard with WoW. But, as a hardcore gamer and (wannabe game-) developer, I have much more respect for what ArenaNet did.

So if the AoC producers choose to use these money-making wow-like patterns, good for them. I just hope no talented game designers and developers will waste their time on it and be gathered by some genius(es) to make the most needed kickass-MMO non-brainwashed gamers are waiting for.

(my post is a bit agressive, i'm sorry (don't know how to temper it, not english native :p))

I will play on the kind of server where you can kill(be killed by) enemies and members of your own faction... What? There's none ?!...

You're an Orc. A little goblin is annoying you cos it's killing all the stunties you want to khill. You smash the gob'. Wat's wrong with that ? :S

I can only hope WAR will not be the WoW-clone I think it will be. To me, this game, when announced, was this wonderful thing that would revolution the life of hardcore PvPers. Since then, it's been a series of disappointments.

Interesting Read.

About the devs playing their game at least 2 hours a day, I would've added that they should be encouraged to play another MMO of their choice too, just to be sure the things they discover they don't like in long run in that game are not present in the game they are developing :)
Same things for the things they like in that game and that are lacking in the game they develop.

And about the gamers not wanting to pay a subscription fee, I must disagree with Jeff. It must not be the case for everybody, but personally, I COULDN'T CARE LESS !! I just want to play the most entertaining game possible, the cost is so not important.
