If you think this is there worse launch ever, you either 1) must be new and never played WoW at vanilla launch or 2) just exaggerate much for the attention.

Calm down. Being DDOS'd is not something they ASKED for.

Elite Dangerous, Wasteland 2, Divinity: Original Sin, Endless Legend, Legend of Grimrock 2, Xcom: Enemy Within, Portal, Rust, Shadowrun Returns, Civilization V, Torchlight 2, Diablo 3, Path of Exile, Invisible Inc, FTL, Borderlands 1, Borderlands 2, Borderlands: PreSequel,  Blackguards, Brothers - Tale of 2 sons, CS: Go, Minecraft, Trove, Starbound.

The list can go on & on. It's almost unfair how many exclusives & quality Indie games there are on the PC, as well as a decent amount of ports from console. I actually prefer Shadows of Mordor, Evolve, COD:AW, Batman Arkham City/Arkham Asylum on my PC than my PS4/PS3/X360.

And with Steam streaming I do not need a super powerful PC in my living room, just a wifi capable unit and I's able to stream my games from my gaming rig onto my livingroom TV /media PC with a xbox wireless controller connected. I don't need to move my gaming rig anymore.

It's no wonder PC gaming is killing the next gen consoles =/

An open world is a type of video game level design where a player can roam freely through a virtual world and is given considerable freedom in choosing how or when to approach objectives.[1] The term free roam is also used, as is sandbox and free-roaming.[2][3] "Open world" and "free-roaming" suggest the absence of artificial barriers,[4]

When you logged in to Vanilla WoW, could you roam freely?   Check

Could you skip over content or level in different ways?  Check

Was the world "open" to all levels and characters?  Check

I guess I hit a nerve with the sandbox gestapo here, but vanilla WoW was always a sandbox game imho with instancing being only a feature, that is up until the newest stuff....

I don't think you struck a nerve, I just think they are stating a fact: You are wrong.

Perhaps their method of proving you wrong may seem unorthodox to you, never-the-less, you are still wrong.

If you are going to cite wikipedia, please take a look at BOTH links in the citation:

One refers to a job posting, the other talks about open world games, not sandboxes, and references GTA which is indeed a sandbox.  and

Next time do your research before pulling quotes off the internet.

Once again in case you missed it, you're wrong. WoW was great, but it's no sandbox. Stop perverting the definition for your own trolling needs.

That moment when u lose all respect for a website you have been a part of for a long time, and previously continued to give the benefit of the doubt.

Just because an article sparks discussion is no reason to leave it up, especially after stating it is indeed full of fallacy. That is unethical, and more importantly accentuates the problem with game journalism today.

Thank goodness for people like Boogie, TotalBiscuit, and Angry Joe.

And on another note, if had paid reviews, Scarlet Blade and League of Angels would've been the highest rated games of all time, lol. While I don't think they accept some sort of perk or payment for a padded review score, the forum moderation has been known to curve the amount of negative posts a game gets, even if the post is logical, explanatory, and in an orderly manner. I can understand the vulgar troll posts, but when a user posts a legitimate issue with a game it should not just "disappear"

Wasteland 2, Divinity: Original Sin, Shadowrun, FTL, Endless Legend, Starbound.

Thank you Kickstarter and Indie devs everywhere.

40 man hardcore raiding didn't kill this game. Stop with the "i told ya so" because you're wrong. Bugs killed the game, a premature PVP season killed the game, exploit/cheaters/win-trading killed this game. That's a fact directly from all the large guilds associated with the large guild I am a part of.

As part of a hardcore PVP guild, 3 guilds, including the one i am a part of, left because the PVP wasn't there, it was buggy, and classes were horribly broken. The PVE hardcore guilds stuck around until they could not put up with the bugs anymore. Not a single large guild that my guild keeps in contact with left because "lawlz 40 raid iz too haaard", not a SINGLE one. Save the "i told you so", you aren't fooling anyone. You were not right.

Lots of organized guilds got 40 people together. Was it easy? No, but they did it. When you get all those people together, and they work HARD coordinating strategies and still fail a raid due to bugs, that's when you have a problem.

You misunderstand what i was trying to say.  Maybe i shouldnt of said "game" and should of said "genre".

What has happened to the MMORPG genre is the equivalent of a bunch of people seeing a formula 1 race, thinking its cool, wanting to get into it, getting into it, but then complaining that the cars only seat 1 person, and they should really seat 4, and that the cars are too hot and noisy, so they need air conditioning, and sound deadening.  Oh, the cars are also uncomfortable rides, its too stiff, so we should soften up the suspension so its more comfortable.

Now, you have a bunch of minivans racing around a track.  Its no longer formula 1.

That was my point.

^ this guy gets it. +1

Back then during the Eq2/WoW days, MMOs were new to people, so they didnt know that the Levels were really gating content.  Incorrect, there were guilds competing for server firsts and other accomplishments that required leveling quickly. There just wasn't an emphasis on "end game" by developers as much as there is now. So the masses did not bother because leveling was a lot slower then, unless you "no life'd" it, you couldn't get those server-firsts and that was OK with the masses. By the time WoW came, I agree there was some people who just did not know.

As time went on, and the mechanics behind MMO levels became more known, is when people started power leveling in masses. Incorrect. as time went on developers decided to chuck the progression and journey out the window and focus on the end game in order to compete with the likes of WoW who had the bulk of their population at end-game already. So how do you entice new players who are already at endgame in WoW to move to your game? You show them a shinier, newer endgame in YOUR game, and allow them to get there faster.

the masses, see no point grinding levels while taking your time, when the content you are doing will become meaningless when you hit the next level. on top of that, when the interesting game features are locked behind a level wall, you want to reach that wall to play it. This is a problem of  bad development and horrid game mechanics. They should make their game interesting from day one or level one. It's only a "grind" if it is not fun and becomes more of a job. Once again, this is a problem introduced when the emphasis of MMOs became "end game"

no point doing the level content slowly, when you can do that same task as a higher level, while having access to more features o the game to have fun with.

I understand you are just bringing up a topic to discuss. It's nice to have topics that aren't about bashing games/people on this forum, thanks for that. Please don't take anything I type as a personal attack. I am just making points & observations. Some of those points are opinions, whereas others are just a change in trends in the games we play today substantiated by facts.

The day we do away with levels or meaningful progression is the day we might as well play re-skinned versions of COD. One instance, no massive open worlds, and everyone the same level.

So the real question in this topic is not "why should I take my time leveling" but instead "why should i play MMORPGs if I want to get to the ending on day one."

2 million registered users does not equate 2 million concurrent active users in-game.

Seriously speaking, you did not know that?

I will use EQ2 as my example of why I leveled slowly:

I played EQ2 since launch and leveled slowly. Why? Because I enjoy the EQ lore and read the quests. I followed the story and enjoyed specifically the heritage quests.

I leveled slowly because I wanted to do every dungeon at its appropriate level for an actual challenge. I know seems crazy right? Someone actually wanting a challenge in this day & age.

I leveled slowly because I wanted to try every class before investing an immense amount of time at end-game. Trying classes up to mid 20s gave me a quick picture of that class's mechanics. I did not want to power level to end game then find out that I spent all that time on a class I would not enjoy.

Most importantly I leveled slowly because at that time power leveling wasn't widespread important, nor did playing EQ2 feel like a race to end game. Other people were playing at around my pace as well and it was fun from level 1 to end-game.

I play the way I want to play, perhaps you should play the way you want to play and stop worrying about others.

The timewarp (aka the slowing of time during different phases in combat) on certain moves does not work in an MMO considering you're playing in real time with other people.

The precise attack/counter-attack collision detection would be a complete nightmare to code in an MMO shared environment from both a server's perspective as well as client side, when taking into account the blending trees of the animation. And this is not even BEGINNING to take into account latency.

I could go on & on...

Hearthstone is on this site because this site no longer covers JUST MMORPGs. It now covers all things popular in video gaming. The staff have been over this numerous times already.

A lot of great points have been made from too many of you too quote.

I will add this: I do not blame the programmers, I blame management, for the quality of the industry as it stands right now. Management is generally disconnected from what the cost of making a GOOD game is, not just a game, but a good one.

Furthermore, I blame the consumer for continuing to buy rushed garbage in order for these companies to make a quarterly report and then defend these companies in a heroic blaze of fanboism. I am guilty of the former & not the latter, I bought the new Sim City. What can I say, I was a fan of the IP. I learned my lesson, voiced my disgust with how the game was handled and avoided The Sims 4, other consumers did not. If we allow these companies to continuously deceive us, then they will continue to abuse the "F2P" category. EA will continue to rush garbage out the door and hope for miracle patches to save the day later. And unfinished games like Destiny will break records and cause other large companies to take note.

A little background on myself. I worked in a private equity firm where we funded all types of ventures, including game studios. I specifically worked as a risk profile analyst and stock analyst. Every month there would be a meeting where we would sit down with these small studios and "hear them out", and every month it ended the same. How much money could this game achieve? My company did not care what the game was about at all, at various meetings my direct supervisor would even cut off the developers and just ask them straight out "what is the shelf life, what is your exit strategy, and what is your preferred business model"

As a gamer and hobbyist programmer I felt truly bad for these game studios. You see, the suits do not care at all about entertainment, experience, game worlds. All they care about is how much money they will make on their investment. When cash shops became popular, every developer that walked in our door HAD to have a cash shop in their prototype coded up with a working backend before they were even allowed to enter our building, no one cared if the game prototype even worked. And in early 2000 when the costs of game development were rising, yet the cost of retail games had to remain the same, these same suits had big binders detailing how to break a game's content into downloadable modules that they could charge separately for. The goal was to have someone pay $100 on average for a game while thinking they were only paying "$59.99", and it worked to our dismay.

Luckily I retired at 30 due to a lucky streak in the stock market and now I enjoy programming for fun instead of worrying about a paycheck. I work and help others on projects I find fun and encourage anyone else who is doing it as a labor of love. Yet this industry is brutal. Just watch the documentary Indie Game, and remember for every success story there are hundreds of failures.

Programmers are overworked, treated badly, & psychologically abused. There is one Valve, the rest of these big companies treat their coders as cattle. It's not all fun & games behind the scenes. It's a lot of hard work for an under-appreciated job field. My hats off to you guys coding day & night barely making a living.

Gamers have no understanding or respect for real game developers, and neither do Management, as well as the other suits who continue to pillage our hobby of gaming in the name of capitalism.

Correlation does not imply causation

How more games do not do this amazes me. Great idea, and great for the community.
I really enjoy albion's art style, but the game's still under alpha

The game has hardly been out for a week and you are already calling it the best since EQ?

Since you have obviously played other MMOs, don't you think you should give it a few months before making such boastful statements?

He said it was the best mmo since EQ in his opinion. Do you go around saying the same thing to people who played the game for 15 minutes and came to the forums to whine & complain? No you didnt, instead you cheered them on. Should i go thru the post history?

Stop derailing this thread. The topic is about Archeage and how the op feels its the best since EQ. This forum has enough negativity and passive aggression.

Hopefully they can see easily the many fronts where Destiny failed and take this new project, "Not Titan", and make the game Destiny tried to be. If anyone can do it, I'm sure it's Blizzard.

Tera was P2P at launch and had one of the worse communities I ever witnessed.

It's a fact of all online games nowadays, not just exclusive to MMOs. Have you ever been in a COD Xbox live room? Most people act tough behind a computer screen to live out their fantasies that they cannot in real life.

Borderlands 1, borderlands 2.

Just like that I proved your entire reply invalid. There are many FPS with 16-40 hour gameplay content, and NOT just multiplayer maps. Stop defending a money-grab. It's NOT OK for companies to rip people off and purposely break down content into day/week one DLCs.

If you think it's OK to rip the consumer off with multiple DLCs & broken stories, then YOU ARE THE PROBLEM.
