 Great article.

I've been out of the MMO picture and last games I played a lot were WoW and EvE. Played a lot more in-between and yeah, everything was the same with a different setting.

Maybe everything has been done? Lol, I don't know, but console games can still kick ass sometimes and innovate. Seems like for an MMO do that is too hard.

Let's see what will happen, but I predict more shitstorms.

Threads like this are always filled with such diverse opinions, and while some are interested, it all boils down to:

1- Players that play for fun

2-Players that need to feel important, need reassurance in their lives, etc, but having "in-game status"

I think, maybe, blizzard is actually investing a little bit more into 1 than 2, so people are whining. You want to acomplish something? Do so IRL, games are pixels so you can have fun, not to stroke your ego because you are, in fact, no one.

Now I beg to differ, if you are going to include Atlantica, why in the world did you exclude f2p games like Perfect World?

In my opinion, Perfect World is so much better than Atlantica, there is just no comparison.  Atlantica has that ancient turn based combat, which to many of us is just plain lame and it is a huge lagfest.  I had a couple hundred people on screen the other day in Perfect World and only experienced mild lag.

Seriously if you are going to include the f2p games, then include them all.  You can't justify excluding any when you include one of them.

I think with Perfect world its still considered as unreleased.  Oddly they just put out an expansion.  Then there's the question of  which perfect world, because Its Malay PW has been out since 2007, and although they gave a beta in Sept for PW international, they never really had an actual "launch" if you will.

tru.dat

Personally, I think Atlantica is a way more structured game and gives you more stuff to do. I managed to play to level 51 without burning out (no time to play atm) while in PW I couldn't play past 20 or so if I remember right...

At least the strategic element in Atlantica keeps you playing a bit longer, it's not just endless skill-button mashing.

Darkfall could launch today. It's more ready for launch than most, if not all of the MMORPG titles at the same stage that I've personally sampled and it has been for quite some time.

--

So uh, great respose. "that I've personally sampled"..very subjective.

The guy is too defensive to me.

--

We're not going to depend on playtesters for everything...the game is already tested.

--

I wish the best of luck to the DF team, BUT I will laugh so damn hard when it's released and totally bugs start to appear.

Sounds to me he'd give his life for his game, which makes him a bad salesman unless he has a PERFECT product. And I've come to realize there's never such thing.

Let's see how this plays out. :)

Pretty cool features, I only wonder if the exp is shared (divided by 2) or some other means of distribution. Great for friends indeed.

I'm probably not coming back as well.

As someon people said, I trained BS V with "ghost training" as well and it made me come back to start training and progressing on other areas.

After the last time I stopped paying I was training Command Ships V (Probably done now, takes 1.5 months or something). I was thinking on playing for one month and leaving another V skill training, but I guess not.

I only got to rank 9 since it took me AGES to download from fileplanet (damn queues), but it's pretty cool.

If I was playing a more solo friendly class, I'd probably got to level 10 and died less...lol.

The game is pretty cool though, I give it 3-6 months of interesting things (casual play). WoW lasted less for me (but I played 24x7 on release, so...)

There is great risk.

The risk is wasting your precious time which you could use to become a "better" human beign.

The risk is, considering what I said above, you not beign able to lead the life you want to. Or maybe not beign able to fulfill your dreams (which often require $).

Anyway, very silly calling it Risk vs Reward. Should be "time wasted vs. reward". Anyway, the article is kinda right.

Typo found:

"The Swrodmaster's mastery paths are as follows:"

And no, my eyes are not used to reading like a normal person.

Cool class, but I bet it will fail like most "elven" dodge based tank classes games have to offer. :O

This game is going to be a hit or completely fail. I just recently started doing some research on this game and I will be trying it. If nothing more than the fact they are trying alot of things that seem interesting. Guess we will all find out but my feeling is this game will either top all the newer games that released in 07 and ones released in 08 or its going to fail bigtime. I hope its a sucess just because the MMO genra needs more diversity :)

Hah, I kept thinking the same thing while i was reading it.

More and more, each time I read stuff about this game I see it will totally rock or totally suck. =P

(Amazing how many people voted WoW for least fun. Is it the only mmo you played? I'm not a WoW lover, but please, put feeling aside and learn to judge. If WoW is the least fun you hanve't played more than 2-3 MMO's)

Kek, I saw it too.

Seems like a very nice expansion!

Too bad once you level a bit L2 gets 100% grindy and boring.

I hope this adds something to the game though.

I largely agree with the preview, except that I think it's too generous towards the game.

One thing I have to really question is the comment that the game has "tons of innovation". I'm wondering what innovation the reviewer was talking about? The game is hyped as innovative, but aside from the hybrid combat system that ultimately satisfies neither RPGers nor FPSers I didn't find anything innovative about the game. Repeating hype with no real basis is not a good way to start with an objective review.

The game is a huge disappointment. It would be disappointing in any event, but it's made even more so knowing the money and time (six years) that went into it and the fact that Richard Garriott is behind it. What a wast of time, money and talent.

I just wanted to point out that since we haven't seen a combat system similar to Tabula Rasa's ever before in a AAA MMORPG, it is indeed innovative.

Now, I'm not saying that it's a good innovation, I haven't played TR enough yet to make a personal decision one way or the other, but something doesn't have to be good in order to be innovative. Just different, which TR is.

Actually, from a business point of view, innovative is something that is new but is commercially viable and it works.
If something is new but it dies out, it's not considered and innovation, because actually it did not 'innovate'.

But still, the combat is indeed a bit different. I still think the game will be a flop though. Actually I think its perfectly reasonable to compare it to D&D on how well it wil do.

As said, different people play for different reasons.

Which is quite...umh, obvious. People with jobs either play to have some fun (when that's possible) or to pwn the lesser work collegues =D or even to go away for a while from the 'real' world.

People with too much free time (And usually without real life accomplishments)  play, as the article mentioned, for braggin rights. Which is neither wrong nor right, when I was younger I played for that. =P

So there you go, either you make a focused game to cater to one specific audience, or you make a generalist one (kinda like WoW) to try and get all kinds of players.

Obviously, if your game is simpler you will get more subscribers...its quite simple, the majority of people playing nowdays are casual players.

I think it's reallty a vague point to discuss, because different gamers want different kind of games.

When I was younger I played FPS games because 'uber skillz0rs to pwn all' was something hard to acquire, but now I play easy games because each day I have like 30mins free to actually do what i want.

So, sure, if you have tons of free time you will want harder stuff to feel you acomplished something. If you don't, you'll want something simpler so that you CAN actually acomplish anything.

And that's it.

And to who ever said it was a single player game you obviously never have played it because I am always seeing people, they are everywhere, I went into a random cave and there were people all over the place.

What he meant is there is no reason to be in a group. The entire game is soloable. It is a singleplayer game with multiplayer capability, far as I'm concerned.

Sorry, I beta'd it for a month, before uninstalling. Garriott did indeed drop the ball on this one. Big time.

And there's no way in hell I'd ever pay 14.99 a month ( the price for the monthly subscription ) for it. A Guild Wars type payment would have been acceptable (only buying the game itself), but paying box AND sub fees for this is ridiculous.

..and that is exactly why WoW still reigns.
Sure it's not THE game, but at least its relatively more polished than half-assed rushed MMO's.

Idk how the other games are doing (SWG, EQ2, etc) but I'd say the only games worth playing are WoW and EvE.

So sad to see this rushed (assumed it is).
Bu theres still a small amount of hope...remember WoW beta ?It had crapload of bugs and server problems, then they released it and after the initial chaos it was the greatest time of 9583957823758 people playing. =P

Yeah, but if you *think* about it they are 'wrong'.

'Cause dps is dmg per sec.

Sooo...it would be way more appropriate for them to just say "ranged damage dealer" and "melee damage dealer".

I bet they are using the 'dps' word only because its not 'popular' among MMOs and every casual family guy that plays WoW kinda know what it means. But in the end, theres no 'dps' classes, theres damage dealing classes. Dps is just a way of MEASURING IT. If a class dealt damage only in second INTERVALS, then yeah, its a dps class in MY book.

But anyway,thats so circunstancial...

Seriously, did anyone *NOT* saw this coming ?

I mean, wtf. The game doesn't have what it takes to be P2P.
Sure MMC is awesome, but that's no reason to pay.

Archlord just went F2P now...surprised ?I hope not, because it was pretty obvious. =p

I just feel sad for the devs that actually care and are trying to make a nice product, but eh, let's hope people play their games if they are free.

The game is a disaster.

It went pretty much downhill after the beta.

As a Matrix fan, i am very disappointed.I can't believe that the Wachowski brothers still let this thing tarnish their creation.

First they started removing the content from the beta, then the iconic characters from the movie(either by changing their appearance or altogether). The only reason why i continued to play the game is because of the events and their continuation of the storyline but mainly because of the great guild that i was a part of (CoZ).It all started off good. From voice actors to cinematics to the epic story driven events.

Now, they have replaced the in game cinematics with pencil drivel slideshows and pretty much killed all of the main cast from the movies. The epic events are gone as well and now we're stuck with a half assed player operated events team.

The developers have not improved nor introduced any real new content to the game.

It took these morons years just to remove a (the) sound looping bug. They never should've let SONY get their hands on this at all.

They've managed to ruin SWG and now this too.

All in all,it's an insult to all Matrix fans.

I just simply don't understand why this game is still around. It makes no profit whatsoever nor does it contribute anything positive to the franchise.

That's really sad...beta was kinda decent, I played it 'till the end and it was manageable.

I'm glad I didn't try retail....

And funny to see that this stuff is still around...o_O
