Really didn't expect this thread to end up as a F2P vs P2P thread. Gonna see if we can get this locked.

But that's really what it is all about right?  If the game was F2P then all sorts of people would be amazed with it and far more forgiving of its flaws.

In fact, many would return the minute it went F2P, they just won't pay the outrageous sum of $14.99 a month for it.

Go figure.

Great value in my book so far.

Charging 20 dollars for a race in a pay 60 bucks + 15 sub is not fine in my book. I'm neither a fan or a hater or ESO. I just don't think a game with a sub should even have extra pay walls or pay for convenience.

Movies are more popular than games I suppose. One is more hollywood than the other. No one should automatically assume hardcore gamers are losers though.

The game industry is the bigger than any other sort of entertainment.(In terms of revenue atleast)

Movies are for sure more accepted in the upper class of society. But the majority of the population does not share the same view. Just look at "House of Cards". A senator enjoying video games in his spare time is seen as a weird thing. Games are for stupid and poor people. Which is the attitude of the higher classes in society.

Movies and dedicated movie fans are for sure more accepted in the social norm. But you have to look back in time to see why that is the case, movies have existed for way longer than games. If you would go 50 years into the future I would bet movies will be dead, atleast as we know them. Non interactive entertainment? No thanks. The future of entertainment will be the ones where the viewer/player can impact the experience.

Simple movies will probably not exist in a few decades, we will have VR headsets that goes beyond the experience of real life.

If you don't believe this, ask you'r self why you play games or watch movies.

I wonder how long until some clever guy finds a way to stream data into our brains lol.

multi-accounts afk'ing to inflate votes is my first thought.

my second thought is "what's the payment model".

sounds cool but there's isues.

5 hours sounds too little indeed. I would say 20. There will be abuse but you would have to go out of you'r way to do so. If the game will be as successful as Rust and DayZ there won't really be a big issue with this.

If you need tens or even more thousand of votes people wont bother with setting up accounts and spend/afk 5+ hours in game to gain a couple hundred extra votes.(Assuming a community does it to boost their server)

How do they define success though? Pure player number or the consistency of said community. If 1000 players love their PvE only build and have fun creating minigames, all playing that server constantly and stay on it for many months.

Would that be a more successful than a PvP with custom settings played by a higher number of players, but less consistency and more likely players actually staying around.

"Success" can be so many things. Will a unsuccessful server be forced to shutdown?

Seen several posts complaining about SC and how slow it is. When did the development start? Early access/kickstarter does not mean you support a soon to launch game. Most MMO's takes up to 5 years to launch.

I've taken a look at Elite, looks quite cool. But the idea of it being a solo/coop/multiplayer kind of turns me off. Maybe I've just looked too little into it, but that's one of my first impression after a fast look and read about it.

They did soo many things right with only a few negatives.

1.  Best large scale pvp.

They did a great job of making a zerg powerful and an organized zerg even more powerful.  This game is massive warfare game if you don't like zerg yes there is some small group fighting as well.  A well organized zerg of 20 players can destroy a zerg of 40 players quite easily.  Once I was trying to capture a castle with a zerg we had to run inside and wipe out the siege weapons then retreat and regroup before we could capture the castle.  This game makes you think if you want to win.

Never been in a very serious guild dedicated to highly skilled WvW. I've been plenty of times on TS with commanders and I agree a good commander helps a lot. But it also requires the same mindset of all the people in the zerg. Which is what it should be.

2.  Plenty of pve content.

Mini bosses, Area bosses, world bosses and instanced dungeons this game has it all.  Loot system is like Diablo II,  if you liked trying to find good stuff in Diablo II then you will like how this game is setup for getting nice loot.

The game has plenty of contest for so long, it's all down to what the player expects and wants. I've taken many breaks and lately started playing again and changing my mindset of what to expect out of the game helps. I've no idea what Diablo 2 loot is, but the loot system in GW2 is very lackluster to me. They need to make money, but releasing skins in cash shop and not letting players atleast have a chance to obtain these ingame is just one example.

DR and systems in place to prevent players farming and forcing players to do different content if they want the optimal way to farm, is not a system i'm a fan of. There is too many systems in this game for my taste.(DR, daily dungeon rewards, daily BIG boss rewards) Global economy seems to be one of the causes of this.

3.  True skill PVP arena's

The pvp arena's everyone has the same gear and same stats its up to whoever to win because of their pure skill.  If you are a skilled player you will be good if not you lose that's all it takes.

Nothing to say against this. But being a GW1 player the PvP in GW2 is subpar. PvP does not have to be 100% balanced and strictly set in one single game mode, to be fun and require skill. If you played GW1 you will know what I'm talking about. It's the best PvP I've ever played and will likely never experience again.

4.  Servers are always up even during patches.

One of the few good features they kept from GW1!

5.  400 players on a battlefield and theres no lag.

This is simply not true unless you work for NASA and play at work.

1.  PVP is hard to master.

It takes a long time to master this game.  If you don't believe me then go into some pvp and see yourself get stomped.

I gave up on PvP because I did not master it. It sure does require a ton of time to grasp all of it. But personally I found the capture mode quite boring. I did not have fun even when winning. Played only PvP in beta and had some fun, but when it launched I was already bored of the game mode.

2.  This game has a ton of good PVP players.

Why is this a con? The issue is too small PvP community, after gold was introduced as an reward the amount of players increased by 40%. With the patch today it will probably be the same or even more. Which will result in a more balanced skill level.

3.  Gaming Mouse or Joystick is required to be good.

The ui settings are elementary you must have a gaming mouse.

I'm using my utility skills on my mouse. It sure would be a major boost in PvP if I were to still play it. For PvE it mostly don't matter.

4.  ESO will beat them for best massive warfare game when it launches.

No comment, haven't or don't play to play at this moment of typing this.

Arch Age might have some of this. I've not looked too much into it but it sounds like it will put more focus on guilds and grouping than more recent MMOs.

As for leveling I have no clue really if it's a solo trip or grouping is required.

Yup I do. I also miss more "forced" group content. Requiring actual communication not just playing with really smart AI, which is what we kind of do in the  new generation of MMOs.

I don't mind customization and being able to experiment. I have not touched ESO so can't judge their system. But I do miss set classes. In most hybrid games it usually turns into a set meta anyway. GW1 nailed this on the head, set classes but so much diverse builds.

The real question is why people support these F2P/B2P cash shop games.

Because F2P/B2P means i don't have to keep paying money every month to play the game. Atleast that's my view.

And in return they get away with making a sub par game that the average player spends a few dollars on and then stops playing.

Quantity over quality seems to be today's standards.

The real question is why people support these F2P/B2P cash shop games.

F2P is a cancer that should be eradicated from MMOs.

Edit; More specific, cash shops/"so called micro transactions" is a cancer that should be eradicated.

Playing some Diablo at the moment, bought it a week ago. Other than that I watch quite many TV shows and some Anime. Also I work 4 to 6 days a week. Most days consists of getting home, eating dinner and playing/watching some shows. Probably sounds sad to the "average" member of society but I enjoy spending time alone to an degree. As I spend most of my work hours talking with people I kind of just want to relax when I get home ^^

Also probably spend two hours a day on forums/web news/ etc. Also following a few different people on youtube.

Nothing too exciting happening in a weekday, some weekends I tend to go out with some friends and get a little drunk, but thats not too often.

Just an ordinary life of an average gamer I would guess :P

Seems like another solid MMO.
A good mmo, is what I wait for.

I've played through the whole game on normal, it was mostly a pretty easy experience. But having never play Diablo before and limited experience in PoE I decided to just stay at that for the first play through.

I've done some adventure "quests" and the times I've been close to dying I can count on one hand.

I'm a level 46 Crusader and I've got decent equipment. If I remember correctly my weapon damage is around 260.

Anyway, I'm just wondering if there are some baselines in terms of power, defense and resists that I should get before playing on a higher difficulty.

As from my experience in PoE, resists was key and you would have a very bad time if you did not have enough.

Well i'll be happy with any tips and whatever you have to share.

Would love a key, I'll be you'r slave for 2 hours doing w/e you want ! :P

I never played Diablo 1 or 2, I bought Diablo 3 + RoS two days ago and i'm enjoying it so far. The story is by far not terrible, it's okay.

Nostalgia is a major defect of our brain and everything was better back then..

I've got the same feeling about some games and if I replayed them now it would most likely disappoint me.

Got tired of waiting for a good MMO, so I bought D3 + RoS  and I really like it so far.

Just wondering how big is RoS compared to the standard edition?

As an FFXI lover myself, I've looked for years for something that can scratch that itch, and I came to the conclusion that there is no such thing.  Games like FFXI and the original EQ are not made anymore, at all, period.  The market direction shifted too dramatically, and the instant gratification crowd demanded self-recycle, questing-on-rails experiences in droves.

Even the old games with that style have gradually begun to adopt a casual focus.  For those of us who like hot dogs instead of hamburgers, we are simply out of luck.  Adapt and enjoy MMORPGs for what they currently are, or quit gaming, because that is the state of things right now and for the foreseeable future.

... and before someone mentions it, for the love of god, don't be fooled by Everquest Next.

Yea, although I haven't been a fan of grindy games they just have so much more depth and the recent developments of casual simplified games just makes me bored.

My favorite "MMO" so far was GW1, it was not really a grindy or hardcore game at it's core. But at the same time it was if you put you'r time into it. The best part was the skill and profession system. Endless amount of meta's and build variety, at least for PvP. It had such a great and dedicated community where I've made more friends than in any other game combined.

The next gen of MMO's will be niche game for targeted audiences, too bad we can't all get what we want.

Catering to all just makes the games so damn dull..

I would love to find a semi grindy PvE open world PvP game with new innovations from a company that cares more about their game than the cash shop.

AA seems to be something what I'm looking for, but I've not read/seen much about it.

Everquest Next will probably turn into GW3, more dynamic events, bigger cash shop, smaller skill bar, continuation of the non trinity so called fun meta... Only thingy I can see go somewhere is the massive amount of classes, although this can turn into something like GW2 where everyone just goes DPS and zerg through content bashing keys. We will have to wait and see, but my hype is pretty much zero.

Try out Warframe then, that game is almost exactly like the Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer. And if you didn't checked out the ME3 multplayer already, please do. It's quite a fun game.

Anyway, back to Warframe. It's a f2p tps shooter, but not a cover shooter. You can chose your starter Teno (genetically engineered figher), and you will run missions. You can team up with friends ofc, but the game can gather a Pick-up Group for you if you so desire.

It's available on Steam:

That game is so pay not to grind.

Had fun for some hours, but playing 15 hours to level up one level to be able to buy weapons made me uninstall quite quick.

+ It's not an mmo.

My MMO of the year will be a niche game that doesn't cater to the masses. Who honestly believe any of the games on the list will keep you playing for years to come.

I'm on the lookout for smaller studios that actually care about their games more than designing their game around hooking their massive audience up to a milking machine, turning the game into a mediocre experience in the process.
