Wait a few months; then come back and see if people are still praising it like a new trend. I guarantee you the general consensus will be a lot different... I've watching games get hyped to hell then slowly wither away after launch over and over again for the last several years.

I think my biggest gripe with the game is actually the community. My chief #1 annoyance is the common misuse of the term "Hardcore".
There's a difference between being "Hardcore" and enjoying grinding.
The community basically considers themself "Hardcore" because they grind.
From my experience, there's a difference between being hardcore and masochistic.

rofl I loved that. I stated something similar in previous posts. Forcing yourself to play a lackluster game is not the definition of hardcore. If you can run a program to level you up; it is not only over simplified, it's designed with the most senseless gamer in mind.

I saw this game being advertised on this site for some time and had absolutely no interest in it at all. I could look at it and tell it had nothing to offer that other American titles can't produce better. Korean grinders don't fly well with most American gamers, they never have due to an obvious culture clash. I tried it out per request of a friend and I thought some of the features were interesting; but, I reverted back to my previous skepticism.

I saw the game for what it was, not for what I hoped it would be.

Disciplining yourself to tolerate the mindless grinding of a game is not hardcore by any means. You are simply convincing yourselves that crap tastes like candy and calling everyone a fool for pointing out something they consider obvious. If it looks like crap, smells like crap and tastes like crap, then simple reasoning would imply that it must be crap. However, most people reason these things out completely in reverse. If everyone else says its crap and you like it, then they must be idiots and nothing they say can hold up to your scrutiny.

Humanity has taken close-mindedness to new levels in the past few centuries.

Maybe instead of calling someone an idiot for not enjoying your crap, you could try asking questions instead of making retarded assumptions.

@ Sovrath
It's a no bullshit review devoid of flowery, poignant drivel that otherwise clouds facts. It's a GAME; there's nothing compelling to be said about a VIDEO GAME. If you want to engage in debate try it in a different forum. I did my best to limit the subjective.

Im not even sure why Im bothering but anyways...

I've played even more MMO's than you, all the way back to the UO days... ya that's right... my epeen is This |----------------------------| big! Does anyone care (I should think not...)
Sorvath's whole point was it doesn't mean a difference at all what games you have played or anyone has played. Do you know why? Because I can make an exact same review as you, post a thread about how awesome Aion is...give it a really good "score".... only it will put it into a completely different context for people reading.  Instead of "awful" - I can say its "brilliant" and there will be a bunch of people agree/disagreeing with me depending on what side of the fence you are on. Are you following at all? It doesnt make ANY difference what games I / or you have played, the ONLY thing that matters is the people who play it and like it will continue to do so, and the people who hate it should just STFU and stop talking about it. You have obviously quit - so why are you still discussing it?

Reviews are an opinion, you can say whatever you like. If you don't agree with a statement then simply create a practical response without reverting to childish personal attacks. If you start getting all pissed off, then you turn a simple review into a flame thread.

Secondly, if you were checking out a brand new car, would you look for opinions on it from a person who knows jack squat about cars or someone who's been around a wide variety of cars most of his/her life? Some of you seem to not care who you get your advice from; but, it sounds like you could get suckered by a filibusterer pretty easily.

In the real world, [intelligent] people like to know if a person has a little experience or knowledge on a subject before they start feeding them a detailed analysis.
Use a little bit of reasoning before you start hacking the sense out of a post.

I think this classifies more as a Klingon teaser than it does a trailer. You only saw a glimpse of a couple Klingon vessels and a supposed Klingon narration. Whats with the jerky ships btw? If the game goes live with ships moving around like they are on strings this game will fail.

I don't quite get the point of this thread.
So the OP says: WAR was hyped up and then bashed, AoC was hyped up and then bashed, Aion was hyped up and then... well, now many people dislike it as well.
So what? It's always the same. Games get hyped up, people get excited, believe everything they see, and if they don't know something about the game they simply assume that the best possible thing they can imagine will happen. Of course people get disappointed.

Or you say WAR is bad, AoC is bad, Aion is good?
Then what? Saying that I can't decide wether I like Aion or not unless I played it is not quite true. As an analogy: if I dislike bananas and I dislike cucumber, and someone hands me a cucumber-banana salad, then I probably can say that I won't like it even before trying it, simply by combining what I know about the subject with the experiences I had and drawing my conclusions.

Telling people to ignore everyone who says something that is not all sweet and sugar about the game, and buy it nonetheless, is no good advice. The game is not perfect, it is having it's issues, and it is for many people not MMORPG-heaven. So telling them to ignore everything that's no hype or praise and buy it nonetheless is something between a bad advice and an attempt to make them waste their money, IE spending their money on stuff where they don't know if they like it or not.

I'm not saying Aion is horrible, I just think the way things turned out is nothing new. Lots of hype, and then many people realize it's not as great. Sure, for some it's perfect, for many it's not, as with most games.

Great post.

I've been witnessing this ridiculous trend in MMORPGs over the last decade. Everyone gets all hyped to heaven over the next big thing, then slowly they all realize its the same crap just a different color.

Then the fanbois sit around trying to guilt everyone into liking a game that they already know is boring from what they've read in the forums so far.

Grinding is not fun on any game. The only thing that makes it different on games like WoW compared to what you see in Aion is you don't stress over xp gain. It comes so naturally you don't have to watch your XP bar like waiting for a pot of water to boil. When you calculate how many monsters you have to kill to get your next level it will probably come out to be like 300-500-800. It gets demoralizing. Sure a small nitch group of gamers love having to grind mindlessly like a drone to endgame; but, most veteran gamers out there look for something both challenging, fun and new.

Grinding is not a challenge and my reasoning for this is, it can be accomplished by using a BoT program which requires little or no thought from the actual user.

I am not playing now. Haven't for what seems an eternity. I use to go back in three month cycles after the NGE, till then I was straight on for 2+ years. In the two years I played before the NGE, I never once ground, or tried to grind, a Jedi. They sucked and I was Imperial.
There was one second when I thought they might be on the right track, unfortunately they took that track and made it the basis of every last update to the game. IIRC, the skill trees were completed about the same time as Restuss, and Restuss was a lot of fun until you realized it was a grind. Commendations for awhile became the defacto sgw currency. Over a month I realized it was the first time swg felt like a South Korean grinding game (no offense, they set a standard for grinding). Then came the GCW grind, then the four stat grind, then came the +35 grind, and then the "heroics" grind for jewelry. In between there were nerfs handed down to each system rendering most "work" (worthless) re-grindable. I don't only mean each system, because aside to that every class was slapped with multiple revamps, rendering for many, even more grinding to re-equip their character. Sound familiar?
Not to mention the economy, at the point I left, was so far inflated a new player would be completely asked to submit to yet another grind for credits.
Is swg still a sandbox? At the core of the design sure (always was there), but in order to be effective you have to run these little instances for GCW and Heroics? Doesn't sound very sandboxy to me...

This is exactly how I feel about the "game" myself. The last time I played, it became more of a chat room with avatars. Mainly because I was disgusted by all of the mindless grinding in the game for one item after another. Grinding has its purpose in every RPG; but, when you are lucid for it 99% of the time...it kills the fun.

I totally agree with the OPs comments on the game. As soon as you get to the level 20+ area the grind slaps you right in the face and there is no getting around it. The massive drain on your money in the game forces to grind for money. The numerous quests that require you to collect ore and other vitality forces you to grind collection. Then of course the lack of quest XP. You run out of quests pretty fast and are forced to grind from level to level. Lets not even get started on trying to upgrade gear with stones or enchantments.

The short flight time was a huge disappointment to me as well. If I didn't have friends playing the game, I wouldn't have lasted more than a week on there. This game is as dry as they come. I was skeptical of the game before it came out, I played it in beta and saw some things I thought were interesting; but, it was obviously it needed some major work still to make it more acceptable to the play style of most US gamers.

The answer was, to tell us it was our problem, that the problem was our computers, outdated drivers, or simply systems below the recommended specs.

And in what manner have you established that they are not correct in stating the above?
The vast majority of the people never have a crash in any populated area so saying that the game is totally flawed is a gross exaggeration at best, mindless QQ at worst.
The problem is with  you. It is your computer. Some tool that you run on your system  does not play along well with Aion. There could be millions of combinations at work.

You don't want to hear this, but that is the truth.

No the truth is you are assuming that because you may not experience a problem that its just him. But the fact is the game crashes a lot on almost everyone whether they admit it or not. There hasn't been a single group that I have been in where people weren't dropping like flies left and right the whole time. I constantly read complaints on the Aion forums about large numbers of people dropping like crazy in big fights in the Abyss.

The game frequently crashes on me when I go to Eltnen and sometimes in Sanctum, especially on the weekend. The game has a list of problems for sure; but, since the devs assume they were handed flawless product, they will remain a little hard headed on the issue for months or maybe forever.

Remember when mmorpg's used to be about the journey, not the destination?

Those were the good ol days......

Sad thing is, the "end game" and "how quickly you get there" has become "the main focus" for MMOs to many players.
That's the disconnect, I think, with people who may be new to the genre... To them, the older MMOs were "too slow" and you "couldn't get to end-game fast enough".

The thing is, the thinking and playstyle of most players back then was also very different... Many weren't *trying* to race to end game. Things only seem to take "too long" when you're in a hurry... and many weren't. They were simply enjoying themselves in the game world, questing, exploring, PvP'ing... having a good time... enjoying the journey. Level cap was some far off thing you'd reach... eventually, while having a lot of fun in the meantime. I fall squarely in that camp.

I'm waiting to see if the genre eventually goes full circle and people start to realize that there should be more to a MMO than what happens at end-game.. that the rest of the game matters, too. Unfortunately, many developers have already fallen into the routine of developing what they believe the players want.. which at this time is a MMO with a very short xp curve to level cap. I'd love to see it come back around to MMOs becoming "worlds" again, and not merely "games" to play through and move on to the next.

I couldn't agree with you more. I have been playing mmorpgs since they existed and I have watched the gaming trends go from (casual play + community = fun) to where it is now, everyone speeding to end game as fast as they can and then sit around wondering what the hell there is to do. They end up running through the same end game scenarios over and over; which, to me is far worse than grinding.

The new gamers now are impatient and seek instant gratification for their hours of impulsive play. I hope you are right too; I would love to see sandbox games become the trend again. Tired of these linear based games that leave little to the imagination of the players.

I retract this. I logged on today to see every chat channel being completely flooded so badly they cannot even be used. Sure I can sit there and block them; but, they just change their names and start flooding again, not to mention fill you mail box full if junk. Also recently they started the task of phishing. Attempting to lure people to malicious websites trying to make it look like an official message from Aion.

This game is in some serious pain right now and until they knock this #1 complaint out the problem will just keep getting worse.

The servers have been crashing all night, I am betting the none stop spam is contributing to it.

Ya, I know what you mean, I saw that and I was like, man...it looks like one of their ancestors mated with a chicken. Surprised they don't have beaks to go with those chicken feet.

The thing you need to ask yourself is:  Do I like the Asian Grind?

I'll admit I was close minded about the game at first; but, someone I know insisted I give it a look and I did. Now I am subscribed. I think you need to stop assuming things and start trying before you conclude what its all about.

Its impossible to clearly judge a game anymore just by hear-say and looking at pictures.

The characters will recieve the Collectors edition items on the 25'th during lauch.

I believe you have to go into your game's account to activate the bonuses when it goes live on the 25th. At least that's what it says on the Aion website.

I had no intention of playing Aion at all; because, like the list says it looked like another Asian grinder. Well a friend of mine played it and he kept going on and on about how much he liked it; so, I gave it a shot and I loved it. I usually know right away if a game is going to do well or not; this game has potential to go far already.

Close mindedness almost caused me to miss out on this.
