The world is wide open - there are very few loading scrrens and none of them are intrusive, and you really can go from one end of the world to the other without any loading screens - though it takes nealry 2 hours if you're walking. Middle Earth is HUGE |

I'm wondering if there might be more steam behind this now that Turbine has signed a deal with Time/Warner....

Sounds awesome, I love the skills. Matched with the DDO combat system (which is still the best in the MMO Space, IMO) this is going to be a great class to play! |

LOTRO, winner and still champion! Smoothest launch I've ever seen, and then they just kept adding content every 8 weeks or so, increasing world size, adding quests, hobbies... no other game even comes close. |

Yeah, but Turbine has a rich history of listening to their players, where SOE has a history of trying to tell their players what they REALLY want, despite all of the information to the contrary. I'm willing to bet Turbine has something big up their sleeve for AC. |

I'm torn - it's not bad, really, but some things just bug me. I think that once the 'shiny new car smell' has worn off in a week or two, I'm going to end up not subscribing. It's just not 'grabbing' me like other games have, and to be honest I'm dissappointed in the graphics. It was hyped as this whole big deal, amazing 'next gen' graphics, but I'm just not impressed, I think LOTRO has better graphics. I hate 'crafting' too - the gathering is just soooo tedious and it just doesn't seem like it was designed well, it feels like it was just thrown in at the last minute. Overall I'm happy with the game for now and I'm enjoying the character classes and the storyline and new environments (been in Middle Earth for over a year, so a new story is a nice change) but, at least right now, it doesn't seem to have enough to 'hook' me and get me paying that monthly fee. I will say FC really dropped the ball in not offering a lifetime membership, especially launching the game ner 'tax time' - I spent last year's rebate check on a LOTRO lifetime subscription and might have done the same with AoC if thry had offered it. |

Two Words - Asheron's Call. No instancing, none, zero. Some dungeons are accessed by 'portal', but anyone can go in there together, there are no separate instances of them. AC is probably the only 'true sandbox' type game left on the market (maybe Eve is one too, I've never played but I've heard great things) Asheron's call has everything everyone seems to clamber for on these forums - no instancing, 'sandbox' world, meaningful PVP (you can loot the corpses of your victims and take their stuff - now THAT is a death penalty), no 'classes' - you can take and train in any combination of skills imaginable, wear any armor you can carry, a deep and complex crafting system, free monthly updates, etc.... and Turbine pulled that off nearly a decade ago and has been going strong ever since. The problem is that people seem to want all that 'stuff' plus amazing mindblowing state of the art graphics, which just isn't feasible with event he most up to date high-end hardware. So AoC had to compromise and give us pretty amazing graphics (not nearly as good as LOTRO, IMHO, but that's a personal opinion based on asthetics, not technical fact) and decent gameplay but instance it so that 400 people going to the same quest giver didn't crash the whole system. I think FC did a pretty good job, and though the game really isn't for me, it's a good game that seems pretty stable and has some decent innovation. Combat is 'new' but seems more applicable to a console gaming pad than a keyboard, and I STILL think DDOs combat is the best on the market today, but AoC is a decent, solid game and FC did a good job. |

I don't think you can say one is 'better' than the other, because they're very different and both are fun, but I WILL say that I voted for LOTRO because WOW is 4+ years old now and on the decline, where LOTRO is not only new and still on the rise, but after today's big announcement will be in all the headlines once again... |

Originally posted by Lobotomist I agree that having free reign to use any of the timeline or source materials would be awesome, but how would a 'Hobbit' MMO be superior to LOTRO's time period? During the LOTRO time period you have an entire world in conflict, a truly epic sturggle of good versus the ultimate evil, with men, elves, dwarves, and hobbits fighting for their very lives. During the Hobbit, you get, um.... I'm trying to remember.... Oh yeah - a dragon and some greedy dwarves. Not too much else. The STORY of the Hobbit is woonderful, one of my favorites, and I'd love to see lake town, the lonely mountain, etc... - but if you look at what's happening outside of the main characters, there doesn't seem tobe much going on... |

Sounds a lot like Asheron's Call - anyone can take any skills and upgrade them in any way they like, wear any armor, etc.... I love AC for that flexibilty, I even still have an account I jump on from time to time. In AC there might be a few 'uuber' templates, but it's not like everyone plays the same combo - there really are a lot of variations, at least on Harvestgain. |

Cancel it and download Pirates of the Carribean - it's free to download, free to play, and the ship combat is actually better designed and more fun than PotBS..... |

ZOMG!!!! You mean having better equipment and more skills will actually give you an advantage in combat!!! NO WAY!!! Man, what a lame game this is going to be - so I'm not going to be able to jump in the game and instantly be UUBER with my starter sword and paper armour, I'll have to actually earn my skills and equipment before I can win at combat. LAME!!! I hear Toon Town Online is fun, that might be more your speed methinks..... |

Originally posted by JK-Kanosi Sounds like you want to play a Loremaster with 'Sword and Staff' slotted as a legendary trait. Add a nice enchancted pointy hat and you're nearly as cool as Gandalf himself. so LOTRO already has what you want there, and WoW 'might' if you buy their new expansion, whenever that comes out... Also, Elves and Humans have TOTALLY different starting areas and elves don't really need to go anywhere NEAR Bree-land. Humans end up in Bree-land, which is a nice place to quest, and Elves end up in Falathorn. You can level up an elf (or dwarf for that matter) without ever setting foot in Bree, you can find all your level-appropriate quests and adventures in Falathorn/Ered-Luin etc...., and not need to set foot in the Shire or Bree if you so choose. |

Sure, sounds cool, and I've been DYING for a good Sci-Fi based MMO. However, call me jaded at the MMO market , but here's what I feel about these grand announcements so early in development... First - 'Launching in 2009' means Q2 of 2010 at the earliest. Second - LOTS of games have very innovative and impressive features lists on paper, but how many of them actually make it into the launch product? Vangaurd anyone? LOTRO/MEO? By the time this game makes it to market, I'm betting it will mimic whatever is making the most money (WOW, LOTRO, 'Sci-Fi Blizzard MMO', whatever...) and all the original lofty and creative ideas will have been weeded out. I WANT to find that totally awesome Sci-Fi based MMO, I've literally played them ALL, and none of them (aside form the first 3 or 4 months of SWG - those were the goold old days....) have ever held my interest or struck me as anything more than elves and dwarves with blasters... |

I hate to say it, but if you have to play to level 20 (no idea how long that is) and find a good group before you can really 'get a feel' for this game, then it's probably seriously lacking in some areas. WoW or LOTRO pull you in right in the newbie instance and give you a feel for both standard gameplay and the world as a whole right from the starter instance - sure you might not be 'uuber' with the WoW starter weapon or skills, but at least you have a flavor for playstyle, and I'd say it's still exciting - especially LOTRO. The newbie levels are some of the best I've ever encountered there. I'm interested in trying Pirates, but I'll wait a few months for a free trial - $50 for the box and then $15 a month is priced way too high for what looks like a forced grouping, PvP centric game - especially when games like LOTRO are only $10 a month. |
