This is why players need to take a different approach... they're not building it like other games, they're not funding it like other games and they're not monetizing it like other games.

I think it would help if players get the idea of a "launch" out of their thought process in this day of games that aren't really "products" in the same way they used to be.  

On top of all that, this team has many reasons to believe in them. Just try getting on board and leave the baggage of what you expect behind for this one... I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised!

I dunno.  Ripping through the entire list and giving a negative, dismissive one-liner for each bulleted point really discredits any position you might have. 

 

I'm reading the newest replies and it always amazes me just how much bitter vitriol some of today's gamers have bottled up inside.  Not only that, they're the canned, stock responses regurgitated almost as a Pavlovian response to any new project.  Give your heads a shake, possums!  Asking for the MMO market to change from one side of your mouth, then sh*tting on every dev team's project that tries to do that from the other side of your mouth is getting really tired.

 

I'm certainly not a fanboy of Revival, but I give kudos to them for trying.  Someone has to keep trying.  If the current MMO slump that everyone and their yak keeps braying about is going to be discarded, then at least give credit to the studios that are busting out of that mold. 

People aren't crapping on all new MMOs, but they are getting very tired of every Dev asking for money up front, promising the moon in terms of features, and so far, little to show for it.

Exactly this.

I don't have a position on Revival. It gets one liners because that's all it's worth. We keep seeing feature list after feature list, at what point do we say enough? Either deliver what you're selling or gtfo the industry. I'm full up on feature lists and short on games that do what they said they were going to do.

 

They're not asking for a dime up front.  Sure, you can buy real-estate if you want to... completely unnecessary though. Don't put any money in, but support the development and the concepts!

Players need to give new games a chance, especially when they are being created by independent developers who are putting everything they have into really trying to break the mold.

We're digging our own grave if we don't stop the nonsensical cynicism.

They have very experienced developers on the team, including the original lead designers from RIFT. 

The whole world is  sandbox so PvP is everywhere...

If the article exists, it might be worth keeping an eye on the company ;)

This was a bad post, honestly. You'd be setting WoW on a path to failure, those are all things that LESSER games do. 

  1. Not everyone wants "action combat". Targeted combat makes much more sense, especially in a rules-based environment.  Besides, you simply do not "redesign gameplay" like this.
  2. There is no gear grind. If you simply p;lay the game, everything you need to play it comes to you in a natural course of progression.  Spoken like someone who has... maybe never played WoW?
  3. There's no need for explicit veteran rewards... It only alienates non-veterans. I never understood why games did this.

 

 

I still want to be able to jump however I want. That's a big part of exploring. If it's going to do pre-determined actions around certain objects or conditions before I have a chance to decide to jump... no thanks!

Thinking about if further, if there was a controlled Tomb Raider/AC style option control especially in a vertical way... for example, coming up to a building with a beam of some sort up hi, if you had the "Climb Rope" ability, you would throw a rope up and it would attach to the beam, allowing you to scale it.

I realize that's a different discussion, but player controlled dynamic movement is more important to me than automatic movement (which could quite frankly be a disaster.)

 

 

As long as there is an alternative that:

A) Plays heavily off of class synergies

B) Relies on other players from time to time - one to many, many to one

C) Is still rules-based (stats-driven) offering control

Then I think it's fine to not have tanks or healers.

It would be completely boring if you walked right in to face the boss - anti-climactic.

Think of every cop show or movie ever... hell, think of Batman. There are always henchmen to deal with first.

Also it's clear the author hasn't played WoW for... years. The "non-tag" named boss mechanic has been in since Wrath.

 

 

My God man... no exploration!?!

 

You can spend HOURS pouring over nooks and crannies of the zones, finding hidden areas and scrolls of lore, not to mention unqiue hidden items in the world and rare NPCs that give you awesome vanity rewrds.

 

Exploration is better than it's ever been in WoW!

Cata was linear. But the questing is perfect in MoP. 

 

Notice how the zone achievements are based on "storyline" completion now, not numbers of quests. This is because there are 10-20 storyline quests in every zone that, yes, do depend on progression to tell them - and they are brilliant.

 

You're still free to skip any of the storylines or stop along the way at any point- there is just as much flexibility as before, but with 10x better storytelling. 

 

If all you're missing is the "Go kill 10 tigers" for no reason, why do you need a quest for that? Just go out and grind.

It's the gameplay... hack/slash/grind and no RPG elements involved. As a matter of fact, Diablo 3 does RPG better than GW2.


It's simply not an MMORPG as people would expect.


For anyone reading this looking to purchase the game, here's the best review I can give:


 


It's closer to Diablo 3 than an MMO if that helps.

GW2 isn't a sub based game.  Their total box sales can't decline ...

They're player engagement can, however. And it is, by about 80%.

This chart doesn't even show the GW2 weekend launch peak... so, yeah.

Blizzard likes to refer to their storytelling as "story throgh demonstration" which is exactly what you saw with the DK starter area.

 

This has been prevalent in WoW ever since, there were many epic moments in Cataclysm where, while you're in the action, the story is being played out to you... I think, without question, this is the best presentation layer of stgory I've seen in an MMO. If you haven't leveled through Cataclysm, you owe it to yourself to do so.

 

They took it a bit "too far" in Cata at some points though, especially in Uldum, because there were some cutscenes there that took control away from your character, which is what I don't like. They should tell it to you in the game world, with you in control of your character.

 

That's what makes TOR and all BioWare games so... boring to me is that if I wanted to watch actors tell me a story, I'd watch a movie. Instead, I want to EXPERIENCE the story as it's unfolding, and no one does that better than Blizzard.
