Since they're using cities and zones from all over the world there will be some zoning of course, though Ragnar has stated that it won't be *click "travel to London" and voila*. So it won't be just zoning or seeing a map with an arrow like in WoW.
He also explicitely stated that he hates instancing and he wants to have an open world where everyone is in the same zone. So that's encouraging at least. |

Most of the other MMOFPS coming don't have the same grand scale battles as Planetside. Global Agenda for example just split the agencies up in small task forces, so you're actually playing on maps with 12 vs 12 like Unreal Tournament.
An updated form of PlanetSide could be hugely succesful to be honest. |

OH NO.. SWG vets are flooding the SWTOR boards
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 4/05/09 4:54:02 AM
People tend to fall in the trap of extremes too much. When the topic of player housing, crafting, player economy etc rises, everyone seems to think "it's going to be like SWG! It's going to suck!". Well, it's not because it didn't work in SWG, it can't work in another game. Player housing or guild cities don't necesarrily mean the same as a world cluttered with badly placed guild cities, on the contrary.. Housing, crafting, economy, etc are features that can lift any game up. If done right. People are shooting down these ideas on the basis of a game that was released over 7 years ago. That's a bloody long time ago in gaming history! BioWare has access to a lot better technology, they have access to knowledge and experience, etc. People think a game needs to be either an extreme theme park MMO, or an extreme sandbox MMO. There IS a middle road though. We don't know what BioWare is going to do, there's hardly any info on the game yet. Are they or are they not going to have player housing or guild controlled zones? Are they going to have a decent crafting system? Are they going to have a player economy? We simply don't know. What we do know however, is that they aren't going to make a new SWG. Not making a new SWG doesn't mean features like player housing are scrapped though. |

What is going on on the Swtor forums?
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 4/05/09 4:34:43 AM
I have never seen so much spamming and trolling on a forum of a pre-launch game, definitely this early pre-launch. Well, maybe with the exception of DF. It's not really fun, and makes me fear a bit of what it's going to be at launch. There's really a huge amount of PvE players on the forums who appear to be somewhat traumatized with PvP and who are waging a hate-war towards everything that has to do with PvP. In most other forums it's the other way around! In a way you could say it is "refreshing", but the trolling is going a bit over the top. BioWare should start hiring some more forum moderators I'm afraid. |

Didn't really show much but pretty graphics =)
Can't really say much about it, so in that sense it's a bit underwhelming maybe. The little bit of combat we were shown didn't look good though, too slow. |

Releasing it wouldn't be such a miracle, it being a good game if released this year, THAT would be a miracle! |

Can't wait to see the Earthrise vid and the day when the embargo is lifted for TSW! |

Earthrise has all that but when people talk about the full looting they fail to mention that the game will have item insurance. I remember when EA Games put item insurance in UO, looting a dead player or stealing from a player was a very rare thing. I think that Earthrise will be item based in a way, why else would they have item insurance? I would like to test Earthrise just to see how good the PvP is.
Well, Earthrise isn't aiming to be a niche-mmo as DF and MO. Since they're aiming for a much more mainstream crowd, things like item insurance are only logical. This doesn't have to be a bad thing you know. Right now you either have extremely hard core full-loot pvp like DF or you have no full-loot at all, Earthrise is trying to take a bit more of a middle-road. I personally think that's a good thing as it will bring many new players to this genre of MMO's, stimulating other devs to start focussing on sandbox a bit more! As for items. One of the devs of MO brought up an interesting thing once, what is full loot worth if items aren't meaningful? It kind of makes it pointless to be able to completely loot other players gear if the gear is almost purely for looks.. Seeing that Earthrise is going to have a very extensive crafting system, it looks like gear will indeed be more important in this game, which for a full-loot system is actually better, since it will be a lot more worth to loot players. There is of course the gear-skill issue. A lot of balancing is going to be needed, that's for sure ^^ How to make gear meaningful while not becoming a (big) factor in the outcome of a fight?
Anyway, regarding the OP question. I don't think there's so much hype around this game at the moment. What interests me is the pvp and the crafting/economy. Though I'm sceptic about the combat part. Never been too much of a fan of sci-fi gun combat in mmo's. Will be the deciding factor if I'm going to play this game or not. They might have the best crafting/eco and pvp system out there, if the combat sucks, I won't play. |

It looks pretty clean! Not a big fan of the grey though.
The slider doesn't work here. Firefox 3.0.5, no problems with IE. I must say I liked the slider of the old homepage a lot more, you could more easily see what news there was. |

Sounds nice, but then again, not everyone wants to pvp all the time. I don't anyway :) |

After Age of Conan, this must be the game I'm most looking forward too.
Finally something completely new! I've been hoping to get in beta for quite a while now, but haven't been lucky :< and it's still so long until it's released :'( |

I'm so looking forward to this game!
If this game is going to be, what the devs say it's going to be, then it'll blow away any existing mmo.. I hope I can find a decent guild though, as I fear that the smaller guilds will be crushed quite fast there. But then again, with that combat system, it might all depend on skill, rather then on numbers... God, I want to play this game :< |
