Really depends on what you mean by "complex."

I feel Ryzoms offers the most amount of customization, or perhaps MO, but I never really got far enough in that game to get to the crafting unfortunately.

Vanguard and EQ2 probably have the best crafting processes/minigames though.

I love well done/old school dungeons, they're more open to exploring and tend to have fun traps/secrets.

I absolutely hate modern MMO dungeons in which you proceed down a fairly linear tunnel knocking off bosses for gear.

I agree with the above poster, EQ1 has some of the best dungeons even to today, many are large enough to actually warrant multiple excursions to check out other areas in them.

Isn't that a free to play sandbox MMO?

A lot more open-ended than the current crop of MMO's, but no I wouldn't call it a sandbox. Never seen devs/reviewers label it as such either.

Neocron 2 is still running last I checked, but there are at most 50-60 people reportedly ever logged in at a given time.

I think there's an issue with making a new account as well.

Amazing game though, had a lot of fun with it back in it's prime years.

I'd have to give my vote to Mabinogi as my favorite. Much more tactical, and is unique from the rest of the MMO market.

I liked that you could make your own skills in Ryzom, but otherwise it was still auto-attack/smash hotbar.

skyrims no different than themepark mmos, you run around and do quests for people, theres really nothing in skyrim that isnt ipresent in most themepark mmos.

Dont know where this comparison of skyrim and sandboxes keep coming from.

Very loose comparison

Everquest 1 had invisible monsters, it was pretty cool, made dungeons a bit more scarier/threatening. Made certain buffs/potions worth having around just in case.

I'm perfectly fine with mobs being able to invis/stealth in PvE as it creates situations/areas where you can be taken by surprise for a change.

Other games like FFXI have also used a more varied detection system like sight/sound/smell/casting spells. It's a fantastic feature that is apparently being ignored by modern developers.

My feelings towards stealth as far as how players use it in MMO's is pretty piss poor. There is no actual "sneaking" involved, it's just a temporary invisible toggle. It's one of several reasons I can't really don't enjoy playing stealth classes in MMO's. I'd like to see it improved/caught up to speed with single player games, but I don't see that happening given the current trend MMO's are following.

FFXI

I'm not entirely sure if it's true, but I read somewhere that it has it's roots back in EQ1 in which a small percentage of hardcore players were constantly complaining about the lack of progression/things to do at endgame.

I think the tiered equipment/tiered raids started in World of Warcraft. I can't for the life of me remember where I read it, but supposedly one of the lead designers for WoW's endgame was one of those hardcore players that was complaining about endgame in EQ1, he was some big guild leader I believe.

Beyond that, games have pretty much copy&pasted WoW's formula for endgame.

edit: Couldn't find the previous articles I read all this from, but I think this is the guy it was refering to.

It's kind of sad that "innovation" in MMO's is basically adapting fluff features that were already present in single player games years before it.

Reminds me of some races with levitation back in EQ1. Very cool stuff.

I feel like instanced BG's are just an MMO's way of trying to be a lobby-based pvp game, minus all the extra features a actual lobby based game can have/do. It seems really dumbed down.

But I agree with many others here, I don't see the appeal in comparison to what can and has been done previously with open world pvp.

The only thing I would praise Oblivion over Skyrim for is Shivering isles. Beyond that I don't think Oblivion really offers anything that Skyrim doesn't do better, except maybe the magic system for some people.

Of course, there are alot of good mods out for Oblivion, which is a completely different story.

It's worth playing if you are simply interested in the TES series now, but if I had to choose between playing Oblivion or Skyrim, i'd go with Skyrim.

Personally i'd like to see more non-humanoid races available to play. Sure you can come up with something like space goats/worgens, but all you are really doing is throwing a different color on them and giving them different racial traits.

Something like Istarias dragons are a good example of what i'd like to see in the future, which play out and advance differently from the humanoid races.

Very cool, looking forward to the game.

I do if I take interest in something they have I guess, but that isn't very often. If the game has personal Bio's those are fun to read.

I don't check gear as a requirement for grouping/raiding though.

Hopefully this swings you one way or the other.

That was hilarious

Why in the world would they do this?

People are still just hanging out and socializing in SWG.

You sure about that...?  lol

SWG is alive?! :O

SWGemu is I think, if that is what he is refering to.

Interesting, but the video doesn't really show anything beyond graphics.

Will have to wait and see what they end up doing with it.

edit: I loved the single player games, but i'm gonna remain skeptical about turning it into an MMO. I could see it doing well lobby based on the other hand..
