Lol - you have made my day -)) I agree completely. Furthermore gear shouldn't be that different. I mean sword is just a sword ... is it really different if you hack the brains out of a mob's head with the rusty one or with the shiny one? Not really. The damage difference shouldn't be item based and item should never be the main source of stats. The best gear in the game shouldn't give more than 10-15% advantage over the rusty one. Also items shouldn't be level restricted - they should just break of use, so players will have to look for the replacement and cary some secondary weapons with them (it will actually make combat unpredictable and  the crafts useful). Or you can just pick up the club droped by this zombie you just slayed and bash the rest of them with it, how is it any less effective if you are the huge strong barbarian?

Now that I don't agree with. You really don't think there's a difference between the damage of a katana and a rusty single handed english sword? Really? Or for that matter a new bastard sword and an old gladius? You must not know anything about swords.

i like the sound of it so far. Politics, power, control. That's all awesome.

I only hope the game will not feature the usual linear story of quests that follow you from map to map in a sequence in and out of levelling. Cause that's just incompatible with a sandbox game.

Check out my website for a list of what the MMO is currently offering. From the sounds of it, this is going to really be a massive sandbox game. Players are even going to be able to be Princes.

Excellent article.

Well heartless i guess you dont have to spend anymore money on any MMOs ever again because this IS the base model for them( and it was established 14 years ago). To go away from this would be busniess suicide, invest 10 million or more into a product that May or May Not be liked?. As far as it being linear , well it is...but i LOVE the story lines they have written for us and if you cant enjoy that then you really need to move on.

This is absolutely not the base model for MMOs. Look at UO, EVE, Planetside, Darkfall, etc.

There is one MMO for which this model worked well and that is WoW. Every other MMO that tried to adopt a similar model has failed. The only one I can think of that did remotely well is Rift and even that could be argued. LOTRO, AoC, DDO, EQ2, CO, STO, DCUO... all went F2P. Aion is about to join them shortly. WAR, although not F2P is an absolute failure and I'm honestly surprised that it hasn't joined the rest of the bunch.

I think that after 7 years of trying and failing to cash in on WoW's success, some developers have finally realized that there is only room for one WoW in the genre. I, for one, am glad that at least some of the upcoming MMOs are attempting to do something different from this "base model" and I'm really looking forward to GW2, Firefall, ArcheAge and Planetside 2.

The best sandbox still cannot touch EQs numbers from its heyday, and WoW took it to another level. Throw in games like EQ2, FF11, LoTRO, Rift, and now TOR, and Devs would be flat ignorant for making a pure sandbox.

WoW took NOTHING to another level. It took what every game had already done and made everything so casual friendly its almost vomit worthy.

Thats exactly the point why I dont play MMOs over 1,5years now. They are all the same. Age of Conan brought new stuff via an interesting combat system. Everything after that - the same.

Why even bother. Lets see what GW2 brings.

Everyone makes his/her experiences - sure and I know there are a bunch of people out there who just consume and complain instead of think. Meaning: Buying a game like swtor, played literally every MMO since now and wondering "derp, still nothing new - but spent my money on it - herp!"

^ I cant understand such people. No willpower.

Honey, I have willpower. In fact, anyone that knows me will tell you that I don't take being stepped on and pushed around by anyone. I'm a very strong person. I like the game. Deal with it. And knock off the insults. There's no reason for it.

swtor = best mmo that has come out in the last 5 years - church

If swtor is the best out of the last 5 years, then MMO is done for. Last hope, ArcheAge. I would include GW2 but some claim it isnt an MMO.

No, its just not to your taste.

I don't get it. Every person out there seems to think every single MMO ever released should be to their taste. Life doesn't work that way. If you don't like it, then move on instead of being a doomsayer.

Deewe, how about you go learn some more before you start spouting stuff that isn't true. MMO's have been around longer than your precious wow, and even that game didn't have everything you claim when it was released.

No doubt in my mind, and I ddon't see how anyone could say this game wouldn't have been much better as a singleplayer game.

Thankfully, you are not everyone.

Nice rebuttal. Tell me, what does SWTOR gain from being an MMO? It seems to only lose. THe singleplayer portion is much worse than it could have been, because nothing you do impacts the game world.

..... You know, I'm really starting to think we're not even playing the same game. The one you're playing is imaginary.

There is no such thing as a next gen MMO. Not a one. No, not even Star Wars. They all claim to be next gen, but arent. Not a single one of these games is willing to do the complete redesign of the genre thats needed to accomplish a next gen MMO. I wrote on long article on it on my website (it's in my sig).

As for MMRPG's... this may comes as a shock to you but its because mmorpg's are fun. IF thats what they actually are. You may not like Star Wars, but so what. Move on and find a game you WILL like instead of constantly feeling totally compelled to go to every possible website you can find to talk about how much "such and such game sucks".

Also lol @ the idiots saying this game is WoW. Get over it. Other games will come out, they aren't all WoW. Sorry idiots.

What exactly makes this different from WoW? Besides the setting, that is.

Definatly not the skills, boses the way a sprite mounts a vehicle.

Voice Acting,Lightsabers, and huttball.

All else complete copy.

That is ONLY opinion and nothing more. Not to mention that every single game released in at least the last five years is exactly like wow. Yes, including the upcoming GW2. You'll just have to deal with it. Btw, WoW is NOT the first game to do any of the features it does. Those features started with OTHER games, WoW just adopted them.

For years on this very site. Editors and visitors alike, expressed a desire for innovation in the MMO.

They finally get innovation, and what do they do.... they whine and complain that its not just like every other MMO ever done.

Move on, get a life. Leave those of us that enjoy SWTOR alone.

Innovation? lol. Please tell me where it's at in SWTOR. Voice overs aren't innovation, as they have already been done before.

Everything else is a copy and paste from every other MMO. Static NPC's, kill quests, limited skill trees, instanced PVP grinds, blah blah blah.

Feel free to tell me where all this innovation is, as I seem to haved missed it.

Innovation is making better or more effective product!

Taking ideas from other MMOs Copying & Paste or recycling is nothing new, Industry Standards. Perfect example look at the Automotive Industry.

SWTOR is neither a better nor a more effective product!

Too YOU and those who agree with you! Not to those who can actually pick up any MMO and know how to enjoy it, just like any other classic game.

Sorry, some of us are not spoiled ungrateful brats.

So we're spoiled brats because we expect a 2011/12 game to actually be a modern game and not do things worse than a 7 year old game?

7 years, man. BioWare had 7 freaking years of WoW to look to. I mean they aimed to copy that game but then completely missed everything that made WoW a good game.

Ungratful?! LOL maybe I should give BioWare my first born.

lol. Welcome to every single modern MMO. The last one that did anything remotely like it should be done is LOTRO and eve they skipped stuff.

Suzie did NOT win this one. Sorry. I happen to love this game. And so do alot of other people.

As for bugs.. it's an MMO, what did you expect?

Bioware never said they were rewriting the genre. What they are offering is engrossing and interesting gameplay. For the first time ever, I actually care what goes on in the virtual world around me. And I love the choices during conversations (pay attention, not all choices are good, light, and neutral, some are just different levels of light or different levels of dark).

No, they aren't offering everything yet. But no MMO ever does. THIS MMO has done something no other game ever did in the first month of release... give the players more content.

Maybe the real question isn't about slowing down leveling but giving more options 'outside' of leveling.  I look back at all the MMO's I have played and why I subbed to some for 4 weeks and others for 6months - 6 years.

All the MMO's I stuck with gave me other options besides leveling.  Vanguard kept me going for 6 months due to crafting and house building.  EvE kept me going for 6 years and mostly around trading and manufacturing.  Fallen Earth kept me going for 12 months because of crafting etc.

I judge an MMO on what I can do outside of leveling and I think that is the key here, not slowing leveling down.

Yeah, honestly, its been a long time since any games have given options outside leveling. Frankly, most people consider stuff outside leveling to be "fluff". It degrades those offerings and makes the companies think they don't have to offer anything else.

I may be very angry with the slimy things SOE has done with SWG and EQ2 but EQ2 is STILL my favorite game, even beyond SWTOR (did I just say that? I must be losing it). Why? Because it offers so much more than just leveling.

Ok, the article is pretty good except for one thing... you can't be bothered to actually complete an entire planet before you leave it, whether you've outlevelled it or not.. why exactly? Because you want to get to the next planet. Its really as simply as that, and its YOUR OWN FAULT.

My highest toon is level 38, and I had early access and have been skipping stuff. Here's an idea.... play everything. Don't ignore it just because you've decided you outleveled it.

EQII is simply one of the best high-fantasy MMOs that’s ever been made. It’s feature-rich, content laden, constantly evolving, and has a community that’s perpetually growing and changing. As an example of that particular flavor of MMO, there is no comparison. Other games have larger audiences, but no one can claim to be better than EQII, and no new game can possibly ever catch up in feature depth and content.

I wouldnt expect him to actually tell the truth given his employer and position but this part had me rolling on the floor laughing. This game is a thousand percent better than at release but that says more about $oe pushing crap out before its ready to turn a buck than for the quality of eq2. The game has always had the feel of a bland, souless, substanceless rice cake. There are many much better games in the genre including eq1,vanguard,and wow.

Yes, I agree with you. EQ2 is a fantastic game. What is NOT fantastic is the slimy greed from most game creators now adays.

What i still dont get is if this game is truely f2p how come all of my old chars are still blocked from playing?? Allot of race/classes are sill locked. So i cant pay :(

You really don't get that? Because f2p games are rarely ever actually f2p. But you know that because thats the way its always been.

Here's a shocking idea... how about using all that extra money to fix problems that have existed since the day of release. You know, like the massive memory leak. You start actually using that money for something other than to pad your own pockets and release more content that doesn't work right, and start being honest with your players, and I might consider coming back.

Rift did not deserve to be on that list.

My review of Bioware's post game play. I cancelled my subscription. The compay knew players wanted a great realm vs realm conflict system...and simply chose not to do it...or even say "we know..and here is our vision of the feature".NOPE.So I'm gone....and very disappointed.

Thats called "jumping the gun". Meaning, the game is just released, and you expect the most fabulous end game available. No MMO on the planet is released with a complete game in the exact form everyone want. None.

Here's a suggestion, hang in there for a while and see what comes. Bioware is already keeping their promise, and released  a major update that included extra content just two days ago.

Quitting already only makes you a quitter, it doesnt prove you right or that you have any leg to stand on.

srsly no one cares , swtor looses attention and u cant make it better , the game itself sucks , cause there is nothing new , so you ll better push some of the real good upcoming games like tera or archeage and give them some publicity for free ... srsly ...

Keep telling yourself that. Maybe some day it will be true. Right now? Not a chance. Right now, it's all in your head.
