Off line levelling?

You don't even have to play now to progress?

Whats wrong with just having an alt you play with your slow levelling friend? It's what me and my friends have always done.

Honestly, this is so f*ked up. Another nail in the MMORPG genre for anyone who cares about challenging and rewarding gaming.

All I can feel for this 'feature' is... well... disgust. I would personally be embarresed to gain levels while I slept....

this hobby is going right down the sh*tter, and the sad thing is that the new generation of players don't even know what they have lost because they never experienced it, so they just eat it up like chicks waiting for mommy sparrow to come home.

Shame on you CoX.

I am so pissed off that I cannot find a good fight in world pvp..  if I ever do meet anyone of the other faction they're like 10 lvls above me and own me..  Just now I tried to do a tier two keep siege.. I got like 15 guys together after a while and tried to take the keep which was tons of fun.. but we wiped, and before I can say that I'm gonna try to get more people I hear about 5 people in my group say "screw this, im off to do scenarios.." and our group quickly fell apart.

with love,

a very disturbed RVR fan

hehe yep, so true.

I play on a PvP server these days, so I was expecting lotsa world PvP... y'know, a constant struggle in open zones for control points and what not that all lvls could get involved in?

This isnt how it has turned out.

I go out, alone or with a few buddies, at L10 to go and world PvP, looking to get into it and have some exciting fights, but all  you get is a solid zerg ganking by L20 players who just sit in the zone waiting for victims. You simply cannot do anything in the T1 open world PvP until you get to L18+, which is honestly cr*p. This is why people stick to scenarios, until it is their turn to go into the open world PvP at 20 and gank others in return until they get kicked up to the next tier and have to start it all over again.

No competition, no sport, no fun.

At L10, I got mobbed by 3 L20s and they actually had the face the /cheer their victory.... as if it meant something.... Honestly, I think something is broken in a lot of 'hardcore' PvPers brain... I just don't think they get it at all.

Mythic need to sort this out... have attackers 3 levels above the victim turn chicken or something... I dunno, but something, or world PvP is never gonna be viable for the majority of players on a server.

100% behind this point.

No global order/ dest chat channel is absurd... This is how people from all levels meet and get to know each other even when they arnt grouped. This is where the vets help the newbs. This is where a sense of whole and shared purpose is fostered. This is where reps are made and destroyed. If people dont want it they can turn it off. To just not have it is stupid and socially damaging.

Don't even get me started on no integrated VC etc...

It is like Mythic have made every effort to destroy the community and the soul of this game, like they don't want it to last past the 2 year mark, let alone almost 10 like EQ. Every decision they have made seems to be aimed at that goal. It's bewildering.

I am hoping that once the race for 40 is over and the game isnt all shiny and zerg anymore people will settle down, the fashion kids will jump onto the next hot thing, people will get to know each other and some form of community will grow.

Right now there just isnt one, and thats a terrible thing for a MMORPG.

People destroyed EQ2 when it came out for being a souless theme park, but tbh WAR is that x100 right now. EQ2 has grown a soul over the years and now has a great mature community, hopefully WAR will do the same.

Global chat channel plz.

Fuck that.

Just wait a month for Fallout 3.

Who cares if it isn't an MMO.

Yep, I hear this. Fallout 3 looks great. I am sorry I forgot to ramble about it.

They are basically the same tweaked game (theme park casual lite solo quest grind PvE and consentual zoned/ mini game PvP with basic crafting and none of the frills you would get with a long established world)  with different skins, so you choose.

If you like to solo all the time and only want to ghost through GPS led quests, with PvP to break up the lonely monotony, might as well stay with AoC. It does that as well as WAR.

Of course, if I wanted to solo all the time I would play The Witcher. It's really very good. Or Fable 2. That looks good as well. Some people also like Oblivion, can't say I'm a fan though. I think I am rambling off topic now...

Just as a thought though, despite what people will tell you 'fun' is subjective, it is not a decsription when used on it's own.

If it helps though, WAR runs better.

Has anybody else recently bought the game from the UK and not been able to get on? If this continues I will just go back to DDO.

No, sorry, UK based here and it's run like a dream so far...

So, no, not really...

Or are you meaning the poor and clumsy social tools? Do you mean that the fact that WAR dosent do these well at all makes it a game not for me?

Everything I have said is just personal opinion of course, and in the long term WAR might not be the game for me, but it's good to share :P

I wont respond to any flames to this post because I have better things to do like take the dog for a walk and stuff.

wow, you are sooo mature and wise and cool. You come to a forum to tell us that forums are worthless?

Thanks fella!

The fact that you spend your time reading and responding to something you clearly state means less then nothing to you speaks volumes about who you are.

The rest of us will carry on talking passionatly about the hobby we love, just as others into soccer, fishing, whatever do through out society around the world.

90% of the stuff I dislike about WR, I also disliked about AoC...

In fact, just take the graphics engine off AoC and put it on WAR...

Well, I gave in and bought WAR, seduced by the fact that it's Warhammer, British (at least in spirit), new, and the fact that nothing at all else is grabbing me right now.

First, the disclaimer; I am not a natural fan of this game, and certainly not the target audience. I am a social PvE co-op player at heart, but I feel that I have an open mind. Saying this, I admit that I personally have a big problem with casual lite solo quest grind MMORPGs, mainly based on the way this style of game destroys what makes these games special- the communities. I am not against solo quest grinders existing, diversity is good after all, but it is a big problem for me that EVERY game now has to be like this, or so we are told, to make money, or so we are told. Usually by the investers who want to see WoW sized returns on their capital.

My personal view is that if you wanna play solo ALL the time, don't play a MMORPG, go play The Witcher. Which is excellent btw.

Why this is all relevant will become clear :)

At this time I am only a L13 Witch Hunter playing on the World's Edge server (English Core ruleset). I am learning as I go, so I apologise for any newbie errors and really am not gonna be offended if you set me right :P

First then, what I like about WAR;

  • The art direction. Not to be confused with the graphics quality, the art direction is very pleasing, with the environments and character models being both immersive and 'cool'. The spirit of Warhammer is evoked very nicely, and it does feel like the Old World should.
  • The PvP. Yep, even as a social PvE gamer I am enjoying the PvP in this game. It seems, at this time, well balanced and fluid.
  • Keep raids. Fun, fast, and challenging. Yes please.
  • Public Quests. Yep, at least in concept.... There never seems to be anyone doing them on my server though, which is a real shame. I had the idea that these areas would be like play hubs where everyone went to join in and participate in a spot of instant grouping and fun. A kind of casual gamers paradise where they can drop in, achieve something and then leave to do whatever is that casual gamers do (lol). Instead, at least on my server and at my level, they are more like very boring 50 mob kill grind quests, hoping that maybe 1 or 2 other players will turn up before you need the extra muscle. So, PQs? Yep, they win on concept, but, at this time, are failing for me in play. We shall see.
  • Zone layout. The areas are intuitive and flow very nicely.
  • The Tomb. Yep, great idea that works very well. The discoveries and way lore is revealed is a  really nice combination. Kudos.
  • The Map. Yep, another success. Not as hold-the-hand dumb as AoCs, but still essential to not getting lost in a big world, WAR's map is excellent, and the way it links through to the Tomb is great. Full points.

Now, what I don't like;

  • Way too much solo quest grind. Yep, this one had to come first. I am not liking the way that you are expected to solo solo solo. I get that you can PvP your way up, but I like lore and story, and the lack of group content to explore the PvE world is VERY boring to me.
  • Regionally restricted servers. I live in England, but to be honest I hate EU servers in MMORPGs, and I hate being forced to play on one. Even though some are marked 'English', the fact is that many that play here do not have English as a first language and do not feel confident about typing, let alone speaking, makes general banter difficult. This means that a huge chunk of people do not participate socially or communicate on even a basic level, which to me is frustrating. I far prefer playing on a US server, where the language thing isnt a problem (mostly lol ;) ). Why not go down the EQ2 route here and LET US CHOOSE where we play? Annoying.
  • Poor Social tools. From the clumsy chat interface, to the lack of a guild recruitment window, to the poor LFG system (that I have found anyhow). The community in this game is non existent, from what I have seen on my server anyhow. With no community this game has no 'soul', which imo is essential for a MMORPG to last the distance.
  • NO INTEGRATED VOICE CHAT. Really... what? A modern PvP orientated MMORPG with no int VC? This is such a basic thing it makes me boggle how it was left out. No wonder the early PvP scenerios (at the least) are usually a mindless zergfest, with noone having time to type out anything. Yeah, I get that guilds have already set up Vent or whatever, but PUGs (including joining a scen as a  solo) need this so badly.
  • Slow PvP Scenerio queues. The wait at this time is just too long. 30-45mins for a PvP match is rubbish.
  • Graphics engine. Not to be confused with art direction, but the engine seems very... basic. I get that they wanna keep the specs down, but it would be nice that those of us with semi decent machines could upscale.
  • Very boring/ non existant dungeons. I love a good dungeon, and this game isnt delivering for me right now.
  • Static 'safari park' mob groups. I really thought we had left the EQ model of fields filled with milling trolls or whatever, just standing waiting for you to kill them... Such a rubbish way to populate a virtual world.
  • No Death Penalty. Why should I care if I live or die in this game? Where is the fear of fail? With no threat of failiure, where is the joy in success? At this time WAR PvE is very beige and bland. I get that it is principally a PvP game, but if thats so true why not at least make PvE challanging?
  • Boring itemisation. My Witch Hunter looks 90% idenical at L13 as she did at L1... Boring. Dropped items? Really boring. Why is there such distinct lack of 'proper' nameds and decent loot off them? The dull itemisation is really not helped either by the fact that each class has the same weapon/ gear template... Every WH has to dual wield a pistol and sword? Why? Why not 2 rapiers? 2 pistols? Why not a long rifle? With the ability to swich between them as sets? I just get the feeling that I am following a pre-set gear line in this game, just going through the motions to get the same as everyone else. This might be casual friendly, but it's, again, boring.
  • No interdependance. No interdepence means no inter reliance, which means all kinds of bad things for a MMORPG. See 'community' above'.

Anyhow, thats it for now, more might come to me, but I gotta go out.

Just thought I would share :P

I find it hilarious that some kids feel the need to point out the fact that F2P games are, in fact, not free.  Nice one.

I find it hilarious that you try to insult us by calling us teenagers when you have no idea of who we are and how old we are. It says everything about the quality of the rest of your points.

Your last statement is confusing. Are you saying that it is obvious that 'F2P' games are not 'free' and you don't need us to point it out? Bascially, are you agreeing with us?

If you are, then that would contradict your opening statement yes?

Just because there are idiots in this world who believe obvious lies, it dosent mean they arnt still lies.

As I said, I, my ingame friends and my guild never felt the need to purchase anything ingame.

I simply don't believe you when you say 'your friends' and 'your guild' have never purchased anything. Sorry but I don't.

Maybe you havent, maybe you have, overall it is irrelevant to the point we are discussing.

If you and ozmodan were gullible, as you say, and purchased things from the cash shop because you wanted to level faster or get top gear then that's your problem and your choice. Your are minority, and thanks to this minority people like us can play for free.

Wait a second here.

I don't play, and will never play, an item mall game, for all the reasons I have given.

My choice is to dislike the commercial model. That is all.

I have a feeling you didnt understand the post I made, so how you feel that you can respond to it I don't know...

For this advantage we will gladly let you be the server superheroes if this is what you are looking for when you play mmorpgs.

What?

You have taken a misunderstanding on your part and run with it here.

Take a step back, reread what I posted, and then respond again.

Stop trying to make emotive invalid points based on your projected idea of what I was saying.

ING have published a nice "first look" review a couple days ago that talks about this issue. What I can see here is that PW seems to be the number 1 mmorpg with more than 30 million worldwide players.

So called 'F2P' games always have large player bases, mainly of young teenagers, because the lie that it is 'F2P' brings them in and before they know it their pocket money has been hoovered out of their wallets.

They are naive and gulliable, and that is what the 'F2P' model relies on.

You also make the very basic error here that player base equals 'success', when it blantantly dosent. Even the reviewer here stated that he forgave this game having big  failings because it was 'F2P'. I would rather pay a sub for a quality product where the playing field is equal and I know we all have the same chance to earn the same things by the same methods.

"As noted earlier, this is a free-to-play game, but the revenue model relies on a small percentage of gamers willing to purchase items, such as outfits that help you stand out in the crowd. However, the nice thing is that any items bought from the cash shop can be traded, which means that those willing to pay real money for an item can then turn around and trade it to someone willing to swap in-game gold. Apparently a large part of the economy consists of this kind of in-game trading, with a small number of gamers acting as buying agents for the vast majority."

RMT is a weak way to play any game, however you dress it up.

Cash shop is extremely expensive.  Hence, you can't call this game free to play, it fits in a new class, expensive to play(e2p).

Best thing is to avoid this game like the plague, unless you have a very rich uncle.

Talk for yourself and laugh how much you want at your clueless post. It doesn't change the fact that the game is free 2 play, nobody is forcing you to pay. If you think you need some items to set yourself apart from others or you think you need to be one of the servers super heroes then you have the choice to purchase things from the cash shop.

The casual players who don't need to be "server super heroes" don't need to pay anything. I have played this game on the Malaysian English server for a couple months and I have never felt like I needed to purchase anything, the same goes for my online friends and guild mates.

The only players who will "need" to purchase anything are the hardcore players aiming for server domination. Those are the only ones anyway who can (and want to) compete at the servers top, and this is the same in every mmorpg, be it f2p or p2p. As for the casuals, they can play for free thanks to the people who pay and they are also free to chose to purchase something if they want.

Give me a break, anyone who plays these games knows for a fact you need cash shop items to level.  Otherwise, the grind is just attrocious.  So you want a clueless post, read your own.  The point being is that the cash shop is far more expensive than any other on the market.  I stand by my earlier comments, this game is an E2P.

And yes the Malaysian version of the cash shop is much cheaper, it is in the realm of most other f2p gams.

Bigmango, you are wrong. You may be right from your own personal place, but in the wider picture you are wrong.

Oz, 100% with you on this.

So called 'F2P' games are the biggest lie in the industry. There are no such things. These things arnt charities, they are commercial products. They are free to hook  the gullible in, who then see their friends out levelling them, or getting that ubr gear, and they want it as well. No, change that, they NEED it as well.

It is an insidious and evil business model. It tricks the player into spending way more then he would via a sub model by using micro transactions which seems a small amount when taken individually, but soon mount up when taken as a whole, costing the player a fortune.

There may be strong willed players out there who resist buying mall items, sure, but if there wasnt more gullable weak fools then strong minded types, these games WOULD NOT TURN PROFIT.

It is that simple.

Why do you think this model is so attractive to the more mecenary and greedy game companies out there?

IT TURNS MORE PROFIT.

IF IT TURNS MORE PROFIT, FOR A GENERALLY INFERIOR PRODUCT, THEN IT IS COSTING YOU, THE GAMER, MORE.

While I am here... this line "While such oversights would be clearly unacceptable under a subscription based model, free to play changes everything." in the review worries me no end. Is this really the stance MMORPG wants to be seen taking? Supporting and forgiving weak exploitive games because they are 'free'? Surely a rubbish game is a rubbish game, even if it pretends to be 'free'? Why are 'F2P' games being given kinder more forgiving reviews then a sub game, especially when they turn more profit then sub games? Surely if they generate more profit then sub games 'F2P' games should be required to offer at least the same level of product? Why arnt they?

I like the 'E2P' title Oz offers up, because thats the truth.

Commercial isnt the kind of fail I think most mean when we talk about AoC.

Yes, it will make money. Lets accept that.

When most talk about AoC 'failing', they are I think talking from an artisitc PoV; that is in terms of good design, an obvious passion for delivering a imaginative and creative universe, and putting inspiration and love for what they were building over the all mighty dollar and the end profit.

So, my answers;

  1. An obvious lack of content, especially in terms of group dungeons, tiny world, dull itemisation,  and the like. Thi
  2. Ez mode no challange gaming, with GPS led questing taken to a new lvl of tardness and choosing no consequence for failiure. The kind of stuff people are convinced they dont want in a 'fun' game, but they actually really do.
  3. An obvious plan to go for solo casual lite quest grind short term profit, rather then creating a quality game with community and longevity. To feast now on the goose, rather then have a lifetime of golden eggs.

I have more, but I will play the game :)

All in all, honestly a LOT of fun...
