Jeff Anderson hits at moving away from a subscription-based model
The Rusty Nail (General) « D&D Online 7/11/06 3:06:28 PM
I've played the Trial version of DDO and after a week of playing thought, "I would buy this game if it had no monthly fee (like Guild Wars)." I have been paying monthly fees since Everquest went live (03/99) so have no problem with the subscription-based model -- if the available content justifies it. Imo, if they do go with the option for players to buy in-game items with real-world cash they should restrict it to certain servers much like Station Exchange servers in Everquest ][. I, for one, do not want to play with people that have more real-world $$$ than XP. |

Gareth seems to be the server of choice for new players for one major reason: server population. There are several clusters that have similar sized total populations but the individual servers, at least in the starting areas, appear to be ghost towns thus not an ideal environment for new players. Do you know if there are any plans to merge any servers currently in clusters? I can imagine that some people will be strongly against it but MMOG attrition is natural and without "fresh blood" those sparsely populated clusters will continue to lose population. |
