People still play EQ 1

nah .. i don't think we need Pantheon (which is pathetic in its own way) to point out why few like EQ now. Here are some ...

- camping

- staring at spellbook

- harsh death penalty

- no instanced travel

You do realize there are many MMO's in development right now that are just like that? Project Gorgon is one and has a rabid fanbase, which also failed in it's KS campaign. It is free to play now by the way. Just go download and play it =)

Bioware and Lucas Arts proved you can't make one for $150-$200 million. ESO cost $200 million so that does not really matter.

One of the reasons I posted this was in the hopes of people seeing it and perhaps supporting a game like this. I just discovered it through Reddit of all places. lol Just trying to bring attention to a game that needs those who 'say' they want a game like this to step up and support it. I just did. ;)

People that supported this project post kickstarter got conned all the money went to back pay for Brad and the crew that then quite due to Brads underhanded plundering of project resources. Support Brad as you will while his new all volunteer crew tries to get things working but please don't try and con others into supporting Brad he can do that well enough himself.

I am not a con I am a business man and a fan of MMO's

Besides what is written on the internet is not always the whole story. You believe what you want and support what you want.

If I want to support a small amount of money for a game that 'might' come to market I will. I also support Shroud of Avatar

I am bending no arms here. I have paid far more for far less already in life  ;)  Perspective

It seems you might be fairly new to Elder Scrolls games in general so that will be a plus for you with this game.

Why? I loved Oblivion and I loved Skyrim. For some reason I love ESO. I knew the difference up front between an MMO and a single player game.

Agreed. I have been an Elder Scrolls fan for a longtime. DaggerFall being my fav. I knew this would not be Skyrim with an online MMO system attached on top of it and I am glad for that actually. This holds enough of the Elder Scrolls charm but 'feels' (to me anyway) like a completely different game. I did not just want Oblivion with multiplayer. I wanted an MMO set in the universe of Elder Scrolls. That is what I got.

As a slight update:

Last night was fantastic in game! I met a wonderful group of people who took me into their guild and helped me out with some better armor for my Cleric. and even gave me 500 gold to get me on my way a little easier.

Pretty decent sized guild already and all very helpful. the two sisters (in RL apparently) were the most helpful and were longtime Vanguard and EQ2 like myself so it was nice to find myself surrounded by gamers who like the same kind of gaming experience.

Well back to it! Thanks for all the comments! I thought posting I was having fun in the game would turn into a complete flame thread but it has not. I am having fun anyways not trying to convince anyone just perhaps give a fresh perspective from a new player to someone who may be thinking "what is this all about?"

As a comment, this game has a nice deep crafting system; once you get crafting going, you'll almost always want a crafted set because of the very nice bonuses.  As a tip - if you are interested in crafting try not to load multiple crafts on a character.

Another tip - if you care about crafting invest a point in research fairly early.  It doubles the speed with which you research traits.  Once you have 2 traits on an item you can craft special set weapons and armor; even the 2 and 3 trait sets are solid.  Once you're a few months in, the 4,  5 and 6 trait sets give you a lot of flexibility in designing your armor choices.

I did well with one character who did provisioning and alchemy (neither needs a lot of points); one who did blacksmith; one with enchanting; one with cloth and wood.  With highsight I'd probably have swapped wood and alchemy.   You actually don't need to level them up much at all to keep the crafting up with the progress of your main; I'd recommend making your main blacksmith if they do heavy armor or cloth if they do medium / light.

Good luck in Tamriel!

                       Thanks for your post!

These lies really need to stop.  I paid myself and my team.  We worked from Sept. 2013 to April of 2014, when there was a dispute over how much I was paid.  You can debate all you want about whether I was paid 'too much' for that period, but this 'the team wasn't paid anything' is misinformation at best.   Where do you think the rest of the money raised went?  98% to the team and probably 2% to software licenses, etc.

The majority of the team left over this dispute.  They left with the majority of the crowdfunded money.  I am still here, working 8-12 hour days with my new team, and have made less then $1k. since April.  I have sold a LOT of personal items and am currently selling a rental property so I can pay the bills while I and the new team poor our hears and souls into the game.

So that's now over a year I've worked on this project, and I'm a criminal because I've been paid ~$46k? And the rest of the ~$147k that went to the old team -- they haven't touched the game since April.  What should get your more upset?  Who walked with their portion of the money and who stayed?

All I know is that I've learned a lot about team building, working with volunteer teams, and working remotely.  The result is this new team is not only very talented but incredibly committed and working their butts off.  When crowdfunding does come in, I give it to the team members who work crazy hours and who don't have day jobs.  And of course, there's software and hardware that needs to be paid for.

But is there proof or is the game just vaporware?

We try to release a movie every 1-2 months showing measurable forward progress, with screenshots more frequently.  Take a look at the August movie and compare it to the one we just released.  This game is being made and it's coming together relatively quickly.  Do we still need more funding than crowdsourcing to finish it?  Preferably yes.  And we hope that these movies mitigate risk for the potential investor and that funding will come 'soon'.  In the meantime, we continue to move this game forward and at the same time keep the community informed with our progress via these movies and screenshots.

Anyway, I don't usually participate in these threads, but the 'criminal' this, and the 'team didn't get paid' that just has to be addressed.  And so I'm addressing it:  it's a bunch of crap.  That said, despite the misinformation and negativity, the team and I are tenacious.  I'm not going anywhere, that's for sure.  Come hell or high water, Pantheon will be finished.

I am not going to go into the merits of what is fair or what is unfair or whether Brad is a good or bad guy  Rather I want to say thank you for pouring your heart and soul into this game.  A game that many of us desperately need and want.

Many of us veteran MMO players who grew up with EQ believe that the MMO genre has gone off track and only makes games for those with low attention spans who want dumbed down simple gameplay with constant excitement.  There are no options for veteran players who want a game with thought, tactics and complicated group and team play.

I have very strong doubts that you can pull this off Brad.  But I gave you money because as MMO fan I believe we have a duty to support projects like this.  Whether one likes Brad or not we need games like this.  The MMO genre is dying if not dead.  A game like this can bring back the genre for many of us that have been left behind by the modern ADHD games made for those lacking the patience to play a MMO.

Thank you Brad for EQ, for Vanguard and for once again trying to attempt to save the genre once again.

                        Well Said and Agreed.

Love him or hate him, I give Brad props for being a visionary in the MMO world. Clearly EQ1 was a ground breaking game and he deserves credit for being an integral part of that team.

I was like you, thinking that EverQuest was BRAD! BRAD!

But believe it or not, EQ was created by a team and not only by Brad.

All what Brad did was to tell that team to copy-paste a MUD game mechanic into a 3D client. It was so copy-pasted that the creators of the MUD were compensated by SOE just so they won't file a suit. That's a fact btw.

When I watched Brad's video on his kickstarter especially when he talked about his ideas of combat mechanics I shivered with disgust when he suggested a AoE queues (like in Wild Star game, they are the flavor of the month crap now) and then I realized maybe just maybe not all what I enjoyed about EQ were his ideas/influence.

I also remember when he wrote in his blog (his post-mortem) that one of his mistakes was assembling an ALL STAR team but the one of the things he talks about in his Kickstarter video was... having an All Star team. LOL!

Saying all this I really wish him all the best (if he's sincere, I really have doubts). If he can give us an EQ-like experience I will definitely buy his game. But donating/backing up his project at this time? No dice, I'm not that stupid. :p

That is a fair opinion and I respect your feeling.

As someone with a degree in IT it does take more than just 'copy and paste' MUD mechanics into a 3-D engine (that they created by hand) to create a game though.

Noone ever has said, noone at EQ,SOE or Verant that EQ was not a direct influence of MUD's  (more accurately DikuMUD's)  Yet MUD's were a direct influence from table top games like D&D so really none of that matters or is relevant.

here is an interview quote from THIS site that MMORPG.COM did with Brad:

<p buff_5"="">

How did EverQuest gestate as an idea; what inspired you initially?

Brad McQuaid:

Making a 3D online RPG was John Smedley's idea. Steve Clover and I were working on a 2D single player RPG called WarWizard 2 at the time. Our inspiration came from the desire to create a 3D fantasy world as well  from playing text MUDs (especially Sojourn/TorilMUD).

He never denied it. No proof exists that he ever did.

EQ and AC and Ultima were the evolution of the MUD which was an Evolution of Pen and Paper. Things progress and the market proved them right by saying through their wallets that they were ready for that evolution to occur. So that is a moot point.

The original design is credited to Brad McQuaid, Steve Clover, and Bill Trost.

Yes there is always a team but those are the ones who are responsible for EQ being the game it was and is.

Brad was hired as Lead Programmer, then Producer and also a lead designer. He did more than just tell people to copy paste.

Think of how many MMO's there would have been if it had been so easy as that!

PC Gamer called Brad "One of the Next Gaming Gods" in 2000 must have been for something he did right?

So trying to sell a guy short just because you dislike the guy you never met or do not know is just mean spirited.

I am not trying to be a Brad fanboy or anything ( My fav was always Scott Hartsman) but I do like the work he has done and support what he will do. I honestly understand if other people can not. I really do. There have been some questionable things in the near and distant past that raises eyebrows. I know that. I also know that I know mostly hearsay from very very few and I do not have all the facts. None of us here do.

Besides! People can make mistakes and become better people who make better decisions. Wisdom is gain through experience.

NOT internet gossip.

**May Contain minor spoilers but I am brand new and very low level so nothing game breaking**

I found a pretty good deal for $14.99 for the standard edition of the game which includes 30 days of game time so seemed a good time to try it. I play ArcheAge now and enjoy it but want a deeper PVE experience.

I am brand new so I do not have hardly any experience with the game yet but I can say that downloading the game was painless. Did not take quite as long as I had thought considering the game's size.

The settings in the options where fairly decent. I wished for a bit more options like adjustable floral levels, grass count, bloom slider (maybe I missed it) I wish I had more options on the Audio side as well. Like bit rate for my higher end sound card and speaker setup.  I am probably just being picky though =p

Character creation was good. I liked that I could adjust most details of the body head and hair. Though Hair options in MMO's really need to improve IMO. I liked that I could see my character being created while in basic armor, veteran armor armor.

The opening storyline was a good one for me personally. I had fun saving the Prophet guy.

I like so much dialog is spoken instead of just walls of text.

I chose a Cleric Guy? (sorry if that is wrong) High Elf.

He has 2 heals right now that I skill pointed into. I also have a shield and mace (going for an old school cleric toon) I put a couple of points into his melee fighting as well.

I like the combat. It is fast and fun. (For me, I know many people complain about it but it is fun to me) I like having to double tap the wasd keys to get out of the way of some attacks.

I just bought a GTX 980 so I was curious how the game would look maxed out. Well so far so good. I think it is a beautiful game. I like my characters looks and the way he moves.

The music is outstanding. It maybe the best I have heard in an MMO. (Even over Final Fantasy- A Realm Reborn which I love the music in)

I like the skill point system so I can craft my player the way I chose. Very engaging quest lines so far. Feeling very immersed and not just another I am the chosen one kinda thing.

Even grouped with a Cat girl for a quest. Not because either needed to just because we started chatting and she wanted to help me get better gear. So she did! Very Cool

I will update how I am doing and keep an ongoing journal of sorts of my 30 days into the game. (If anyone cares XD)

I know I am very low level so far but I like the game a ton right now. I will be taking my time through the world as I do like to enjoy the journey and not race through a game. Well update tomorrow!

I kind of feel bad for this game. I liked some of the things they did with the game and I enjoyed the Rachet andClank feel to it. I thought it would hold more interest than it has I hope for the subbers and the fans that it can turn itself around.

This thread is a mess. From the original post which felt like a paid advertisement, to the CEO responding to personal attacks, and then to the current/previous devs/mods responding on bad working conditions...

Nothing good will come from this.

I earn my own money thank you and since 2006 when I joined this site after a year of just lurking. I have a virtual, digital history of telling it how I see it and am an honest and fair poster. If I make a mistake I correct it if I am right I do not 'told ya so!' about it. I take offense to your immature accusation of my post being a paid advertisement. You have no idea what I do in a year, I do not need the money from a developer who clearly has less than I . Shame on you.

Originally posted by blueturtle13 Also Brad is not the reason Vanguard did not perform at the financial level that was expected. I loved the game and thousands apon thousands did as well. The ISSUE which Brad admits was that the technology required to run that game in 2007 was too ahead of it's time. So it lost a ton of money. He was screwed over by Sony, Screwed over making Vanguard. So THEN he goes and creates Rift which is still a top performer today on the market.
I'm not gonna lie, Rifts was one hell of a game, so i'd like to take the occasion to say Thanks a ton to Aradune McQuaid, i enjoyed that one a lot, might reactivate my account if that somehow contributes to the support of Pantheon.
Actually I did not work on Rifts, though I have good friends that did.  I was the producer on EQ 1 & Vanguard, and was also involved managing EQoA, the first several EQ 1 expansions, SW:G early on, etc.
Oh My! I am so sorry Brad I was thinking in reference to an interview you did talking about the Oculus Rift haha                           My bad good sir!

What, seriously? I mean if what you say is true and he was indeed involved in developing the Oculus (in addition to EverQuest, Van-Guard, Star Wars: The Game), that's all the more impressive, i had no idea whatsoever. Does this man ever get any sleep LOL. But then i don't really know, man. Why would the current game need any external funding, didn't the OR get sold to Facebook for quite a hefty sum? Not sure what to think about that :(

Oh my goodness. First you think for some reason that Brad created Rift and then you somehow take him talking about the OR in an interview as him also creating it? Wow.

Anyway. I think Pantheon could " look " good enough now if they redo the moving and attack animations and then add clothing physics. I think clothing / hair physics are just being forgot about in games today. The power is there but for whatever reason devs are going all out to get the best screenshot graphics and not the best playing graphics.

I suspect that once they believe the game is ready for people to jump in and playtest they will put Alpha access on one of the backer tiers on their site and also do another kickstarter along side of it. I bet they would get a good amount of money coming in at that point. I personally wouldnt do more than a $50 tier for alpha access though.

Well to that posters defense that was probably my misleading fault =/  I confused his involvement in Rift with Scott Hartsman since they both worked on EQ  and then quickly apologized and corrected that mistake. My comments probablty lead to him being confused about what Brad has and has not done.

For the Record Brad Helped Develop Everquest by being the Original Producer and Co-Designer ( he was also rehired last year to help work on EQ again) When Verant  aquired SOE Brad was Vice President and Chief Creative Officerwhich over saw EQ,EQ2,EOA, PlanetSide, Star Wars Galaxies.  Then Created Sigil to make Vanguard, which I believe MS kinda screwed that game NOT SOE  (Where he also came back and oversaw the free to play changeover) and then was just ASKED questions and answered about the Oculus Rift, which he did not have a hand in.

Sorry for the confusion. My Fault the poster was confused  =/

I have not played this game but I am a fan of the Elder Scroll games. (Well, not Arena)

I thought it brave for a studio such as Bethesda to take on an MMO considering no Elder Scroll game ever had a multiplayer portion on a scale like this. So kudos to them. As far as scoring goes I think it is pretty hard to judge an MMO the same way we would judge say Skyrim or Mass Effect.

I think to judge so harshly a game so soon after release is not really fair. This game sounds, from the players who like it, like a game built for the long haul. One that will release content to flesh out the core game and add additional features to make it a more complete experience. This is actually a refreshing way to get back to the way it used to be in creating an MMO. Lately it has just been just churn and burn mentality.

SWTOR is doing excellent now. From my understanding it even sits in the top 3 list of both players and revenue. They have regular content, expansions and continue to improve the game.. which is the entire reason it IS doing well now. Sure, it had a shaky start but sometimes maturing your game means everything where so many give up.

Now, compare that to Guild Wars 2.. they basically don't seem to care. No expansions, no new zones, no new classes and VERY questionable "content" updates (usually consist of some boring 2 hour long story quest) that cost real money. The number of players and popularity reflect that in spades.

I think so many companies want to be WoW in their first year and when that doesn't happen, they give up and move onto the next game. So many people don't even realise how low-key WoW was for the first 2 years.. hell it didn't even get EU servers or raids until like 6 months in. It was a buggy, broken content-less mess on the whole. Entire class specs were broken, entire zones missing.

..but they kept at it. They patched hard, sometimes you'd see 200mb patches DAILY and became what they are today.

So many companies fail to realize the REAL development begins at launch, not champagne and holidays while you watch dollars fly in.

Good post. I agree that so many developers just race to the finish line and do not remember that MMO players are like locusts. They will chew through content faster than it can be made. So the creators better make sure there are plenty of things to do other than quest and camp while they work on churning out more content, races and zones (areas)

You are correct that SWTOR has made a big comeback. Though it has a LONG way to go to make up the money it lost. Not just in development but also millions in marketing, which is never included in the cost of making an MMO.  What does it say though that 5 or 6 or more of the top 10 MMO's in revenue, players and market share are FTP

Also Brad is not the reason Vanguard did not perform at the financial level that was expected.

Oh My! I am so sorry Brad I was thinking in reference to an interview you did talking about the Oculus Rift haha

                          My bad good sir!

One of the reasons I posted this was in the hopes of people seeing it and perhaps supporting a game like this. I just discovered it through Reddit of all places. lol Just trying to bring attention to a game that needs those who 'say' they want a game like this to step up and support it. I just did. ;)

C'mon now, let's not be disingenuous,  both SWTOR and ESO are well developed MMO's, even if you (or I for that matter) don't like them.

But Brad's response clearly shows he's not trying to make a MMORPG on a shoestring, he's well aware he'll need some active (and much larger) scale funding to complete the final game.

Many of us here are well aware of this effort, and have mixed feelings on it.  For me, just a matter that EQ1 and Vanguard aren't my style of games, I prefer them more centered around PVP and territory control.

However I know there are many who would like to see this style of game play come back, so good luck in getting this launched and completed one day, never hurts to have more choices in the very bland MMO world.

I know. I was doing my best to interject some levity into a highjacked post lol

My issue with SWTOR is from the failed promises.  THAT much money and you could not do what you yourselves said you would do? hhhmmmm. Seen developers with less money and resources do more.

"Fully Voiced, Story Driven MMO" that was their marketing line.

Did that HUGE budget provide what   they said? No. Voice acting is their but not like they said it would be. Heck even EQ2 had just as 2004.

"Story Driven" simply HAVING a story does not make it a story driven MMO. Character Stories are good but the game as a whole is not what was promised.

I do not even consider TOR a real MMO. It lacks WAY too many features that the genre of MMO's have.

My biggest complaint is the 'choices issue' It was touted as a major feature and a defining feature from other games in the genre. From lvl 1 on your Choices honestly make no difference.

Like it or not give the players at LEAST what you said you would. Smaller developers I can understand but come one. Two of the biggest names (and pockets) in the media world today. They deserve the backlash.

As far as ESO you have a point. I was too hard on them. I think the game will be a great one over time so for that I apologize.

Agreed. As much as I do not mind defending Brad because the guy is a legend in this industry and deserves that respect. I am glad he came on here to clear the air and laying the truth down once and for all. Internet warriors wield a heavy hammer they just usually miss their targets ;)

As for you Brad? Thank you for carrying on with this game. I had just recently heard about it and I have played and supported every game you have made. I have pledged to this game and love the new OCT video update! Thank you for all your work in creating this genre and thank you for soldiering on with what looks like another amazing game by you!

Ok! have a wonderful day! =)

As Lead developer and programmer and office manager and Business manager and PR person and Executive Producer procuring funding for the game he is the one doing the majority of the work which was proven. In court. Only one employee said anything,on his wife.

Money was tight because so much has gone on to help create the game and the proof is there for the world to see. In fact the money Brad was owed was donated by one investor.

If Brad is a criminal then I would be glad to see him pay the time for being one. The FACTS state, in 4 different courts of law under four municipalities declared him completely innocent of him being a criminal or engaged in a criminal act.and should nor has nor will be charged with a crime he did not commit. Learn your facts not just opinions and study up on I.P. law please. This uneducated conversation has highjacked a thread that many people would like to read and not just hear the banter of a cynic with zero proof even when presented with fact. Look at how many people rejoiced at Brad's return to EQ1 last year. Look at all the sad fans that Vanguard is gone look at all the active players on Rift, which makes 43% more money now than it ever has when a subbed game and now with a player base 38% higher.

Sorry we can agree to disagree. I just feel it rude to highjack a thread about a game from a figure even Lord British has teamed up with now and make false claims and defame his character, criminally so! THAT should be banned. Brad has done nothing to you. Leave it be and please find peace.

We know this project and we know all the shit that has happened.

Brad stealing money from the funding - declaring it a 3 months payment for himself in advance. At the same time he refused to pay his devs so they all left together.

He found new people naive enough to work for free and now he hooked up with this woman who is trying to make a MMO based on religion. The first thing she did was censoring anything she deemed as too dark as it would conflict with her views.

We know this project well enough to know that it doesn't deserve support.

So taking money from funds donated for development (which includes living expenses) totaling $45,000 after the project raised over $607,000 is a terrible crime huh?  I earn $21,000 a month online as a video marketer and creator of PBN's.

$45k is not a ton of money for 3 months with medical bills on top of it.

Yeah I just have read the flame posts on this site about this. It was mostly hearsay. No income disclosures were released from anyone else but him. Why is that do you think? Do you think noone ever got paid a dime and just worked for sandwiches? Or do you think they got paid and just did not like 45k coming out of the website donated money to help pay his mortgage and medical bills? He is the CEO of the project. That is how business works.   If he was SO bad with EQ, even though he is the reason most people today even play the genre, Why did they hire him back? Again? In 2013

Also Brad is not the reason Vanguard did not perform at the financial level that was expected. I loved the game and thousands apon thousands did as well.     Also is this the post you are referring to? Not so bad in my opinion. Mistake? Yes. Owned it? Yes.

                              pantheon: rise of the fallen

AND K-TAM Radio has not come forth with any proof after airing scathing accusations about Brad.

Look, like the guy or not, he is an MMO legend. His contributions to the games in this field are in rarefied air in the pantheon of the genre.

Brad- will you be talking about your past in regard to VG and what you've learned in the KS? That seems to be a point of contention for a lot of folks.

If I need to, yes. I really don't want to dwell on the past -- it's time to be forward thinking and to get excited about the future. That said, you guys need to know that we've learned from our mistakes so some discussion may be appropriate. If we aren't honest and we don't learn from the past, then the past was simply a failure and a defeat. I refuse to look at it that way and we won't be defeated by the mistakes of the past, because we are going to learn from them and do a better job this time. I've learned so much, especially about myself, because of both my successes and my failures.

For me it all came in a frustrating sequence. 9 times out of 10 a person fails, fails, fails, and then succeeds (if he ever succeeds at all). For me it was 1. huge success (half a billion dollars of profit for Sony, etc.), 2. Commercial failure (I say commercial because I still think VG was awesome in many ways and I’m still proud of it)

Anyway, the success first and failure second really jacked with my mind. I became extremely arrogant, thinking whatever I touched would turn into gold. And then when things didn't work out so well on my second try it was really quite a blow to me because I had deluded myself big time. I ended up in a bad place and I never want to be back there again, ever.

But also in learning more about myself over the years, I know this is what I want to do for the rest of my life: make MMOs that I and other gamers want to play. It's just who I am and it's the only thing that professionally makes me happy.

I just don't want to get bogged down in the past too much. If it makes sense to discuss something about the past, then I'll participate. But to be totally upfront and honest, I'm here primarily to promote my new game. It's a blast talking with you all, and I'm here for that as well, but let's spend most of the time here together facing forward. We will need your feedback and opinions in order to insure we make the game you guys want and that I want. It's about community building and being accessible.

Anyways, I hope that makes sense.

I think many people should learn humility like Brad has clearly shown and learn the WHOLE story before making remarks that try and damage a person's character. That is the mature thing to do. Don't ya think? ;)   Yeah me too =D
