General: Blizzard’s Cash Auctions are a Bad Idea
News Discussion « General Discussion 8/24/11 8:54:57 AM
Going this route may end up increasing the amount of spamming, scamming, and account hacking from what we already see plaguing their other games. Also the concept of buying power will end up casting a shadow over whatever legitimacy their PvP arena might have had a chance to get. |

General: The Old Republic Doesn’t Excite Me
News Discussion « General Discussion 8/12/11 12:41:51 PM
I want to be excited but I seel the same way you do. I feel as if this is a terribly wasted opportunity that has been squandered on what could have been something truly massive, open, and innovative. Combine that with the budget being spent here and I am dumbfounded that the best anyone could come up with for this Ip was another on-the-rails MMO walking in the footsteps of the debacles we have seen hit the market since WoW. |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: PvP Playable at Gamescom
News Discussion « General Discussion 8/05/11 1:28:55 PM
Outselling another game doesn't make it better, or prove that is a better PvP choice for MMO gamers. Ask around this site and see if people think that Warhammer and Age of Conan ar the best MMOs. We both know that it's not a viable basis for measuring greatness in the eyes of gamers. Since you mentiond UO, you know that it is still regarded to this day to be one of the best PvP MMOs around by those MMO gamers who prefer that type of gameplay? Why do you think that is? It's not because it was the first, it's because the best parts of that game have yet to be reproduced by most modern day MMOs, case and point - UO did not have instanced battlegrounds. |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: PvP Playable at Gamescom
News Discussion « General Discussion 8/05/11 11:43:30 AM
World PvP actually makes the war between the 2 sides feel like a war? Fighting over a copy of an area that nobody can wander into or through feels a bit meaningless. God forbid someone might be inconvenienced during a war. Honestly this is the same recycled crap that has been spun off over and over again in every MMO since WoW that has landed all of them in the bargin bin in 3 months. WAR, AoC, Rift, etc. - how the people financing these games do not see this trend is insanity. |

News Discussion « General Discussion 8/04/11 10:31:44 AM
They update the announcement....
Update: Some of you have expressed interest in when Dominion will be available worldwide, and we wanted to respond to that directly. While we take a “when it’s ready” approach to our feature releases, you will be able to play Dominion in a nearly complete state at GamesCom (August 17-21) in Europe and at PAX Prime (August 26-28) in North America. |

League of Legends: Tryndamere Changes Preview

I'm glad to see them finally getting around to looking at him. Should be interesting to see how having this mechanic on him changes the way he is played and perceived as a competitive pick. |

There seems to be a lot of people who either are not familiar with LoL HoN nd the like, or don't really know what MOBA's are. They really are a hybrid of RTS and RPG so there is probably a case to be made for both ways. If you are not familiar with them, I'd definitely recommend trying one to see what the appeal is for gamers who play MMOs to help better understand. LoL is free so can try it without making any financial investment. You might be surprised. |

Whether or not they belong here is up to the staff to decide. I will say this though, the last few years this genre has been riddled with bombs and botched games. I started playing League of Legends a little over a year ago with my guild and it has outlasted every MMO we have tried playing in the last 5 or 6 years. The game is free to play which makes it highly accessible, competitive, and growing at a stunning rate. Having done 2 interviews with Riot so far, I can say that as a company they are hyper active with communicating with their community. MOBA games as a genre will be one to watch in the next few years, and League of Legends specifically is well on its way to achieving World of Warcraft level status in terms of popularity. |

League of Legends: League of Legends is Massive
News Discussion « General Discussion 6/28/11 11:29:31 AM
I've been playing this game for over a year now and it's still a fun game. You can not beat the value for the price, and this game has lasted far longer in my guilds vent than any MMO in the last 6 years. |

This is a major beef of mine with the genre. Why is everyone trying to spin off garbage MMOs based on a movie. The Mummy MMO? Really?! I would love to meet the dope who not only thought this was a good idea, but is actually investing the cash to make this a reality. These IP MMOs have a record of being disasters. The Mummy wasn't even a good movie, why would you make a game based off of that? Good movies have spawned bad games, a bad movie will spawn....I don't even know.... |

General: Grinds My Gears: Critique Our Reviews
News Discussion « General Discussion 5/13/11 1:11:36 PM
I always laugh at the people who think that somehow ad revenue for a certain game will get them a better review on this site. Anyone remember when Earthrise came out? There was a giant Earthrise advertisement on the front page, and the news banner was the review basically calling it out for being the piece of shit it was. People seem to have selective memories when it comes to things like that. Attacking the reviewers and the staff is silly in my opinion.
I also agree with Jon in the fact that I don't really care for a numerical scoring system when reviewing games because MMO tastes are wildly different. Some games cater to casuals, other to PvPers, others to sandbox fans etc. PvP is a pro to me, but a con in someone else's book as an example. This is why I don't use numbers when I review games in my blog, but at the same time people who read my work understand the type of MMO player I am and can use that as a benchmark for my opinion.
With this in mind, there's a lot of ways I think the MMORPG.com reviews could be improved upon. 1) One possible idea would be to have a game get reviewed by more than one person to get multiple view points represeented by gamers of various types. A casual, a hardcore, a PvP person all weighing in would ensure the reader has 1 viewpoint he can related to. As someone mentioned before, it's silly for someone whose favorite MMO is LOTRO review a game like Mortal or Darkfall because they are so wildly different and catered towards completely different people. Of course the downside of this is that it would put a lot more pressure on an already busy staff to have multiple people doing the same job.
2) Another idea in term of the timeline for a review would be to do 3 reviews as an example which could be numerical, but space them out over a time period, then use the average score of the 3 reviews to determine the final word. Review the game on day 1, then on day 30, then on day 60 or 90 since this is usually the time frame where a lot of people may lose interest historically.
3) A final idea would be to have a section of player reviews right next to the staff review much like you see on other gaming sites like gamespot so people can not only compare scores but read the testimonials of people who are playing. Player reviews could then be given a thumbs up or thumbs down, or agree or disagree option where people can rate the player reviews.
4) A final option might be for video reviews much like you see on IGN or Gamespot where the actual staff member is talking to a video of him playing and pointing out the things he is talking about. This wouldn't make for a more accurate review, but videos really help give people an idea of what a game looks like when its running, or not running well because its a POS. This would of course require someone who is pretty good with video and editing.
5) Livestreaming. How about having a spot on te site for livestream channels so players can watch other players and staff playing the game with their commentary in real time. I livestream all the time for league of legends as an example, but livestreaming is growing more and more popular for all kinds of games, and it is not overly difficut to do if you have a haklfway decent system. This is just brainstorming mind you, but maybe this will help the discussion. |

General: Cautious Optimism and The Old Republic
News Discussion « General Discussion 5/12/11 11:19:09 AM
I think there is a legitimate cause for conern for a lot of people to give this title a skeptical eye. As you stated it does not really reinvent the wheel here, so for a lot of people who are completely beaten to death of the same model the genre has been churning out the last few years, there's a potential red flag. The fact that it is Star Wars does not warrant any leniency from me personally, we have watched big name developers completely shit all over all of our favorite IPs and turn them into garbage reskins of games we have already played. Bioware makes good single-player RPGs, but this is hardly the same thing especially when you are drafting a lot of the same Mythic "talent" that decimated the Warhammer franchise. Star wars has such massive lore and I think that some of the decisions to keep some aspects on the rails really feels like a missed opportunity to really capitalize on the glory that could be, and probably won't. I'm glad they are focusing on the story element to a degree, but I think most people would trade the hours of voice overs for a long lasting game with a meaningful endgame. There has not really been as much information regarding the endgame. Much like Rift (the example you used) I know a lot of people who ran the gambit and are now bored because the endgame is weak, and the PvP is meaningless. If anything else I am sure that if the story element is strong and different for each class or side, then there might be some replayability on that aspect. All in all though, if you have been around this site and the genre for any length of time, you'd have to be a fool to not be skeptical after all the big name bombs and IP butchering that has gone on in these parts. The game could very well be the next big thing, but it's a song we have heard too many times around here and almost never comes true. Maybe when the rest of us get to play it finally, it will win us over. Who knows? |
