George Lucas planning 'Star Wars' TV series
Off-Topic Discussion « General Discussion 10/30/07 2:44:46 PM
Originally posted by SioBabble While B5 had an epic storyline, it failed miserably in dialogue. Not to mention that any extra that appeared on the show had the acting talent of a street vendor or, well... me. So, JMS was no genius when it came to dialogue, but his story certainly had continuity. Not sure what he is thinking with the B5 tales. Man, those things suck nuts.
As for SW, I'm pretty much done with it. Lucas managed to take a wonderful franchise and grind it into nothing. I seriously hate him for it. I still remember going with my dad to the drive-in theater and watching the first movie and then receiving SW toys on Xmas day. Was pretty cool. But who knows, maybe if Lucas limits himself to a shoestring budget he can pull something off that will be worth watching. Seriously, someone take away his computers. - Mal |

Dumbledore Is Gay - Says J.K. Rowling

Originally posted by NeanderthalI still don't understand how having a gay character in a book ruins it? There have been gay characters in many books, movies, television shows, etc etc... does that ruin it? I would have to say, no, it does not ruin it for mature, thinking adults and children. I think it's pretty cool that Rowling is further explaining the many facets of her imaginary world, a lot of authors wouldn't go to the trouble. *SPOILER ALERT* I'm not sure if you realize it or not, but the real world has gay people in it. Hope that didn't spoil anything! But I will leave it up to your individual interpretation. Cheers, Mal

Dumbledore Is Gay - Says J.K. Rowling

Originally posted by SamuraiswordIt isn't important to the storyline, which is most likely why it did not appear in the books -- when would an old man at a school for children begin talking about his sex life? This isn't Catholic School. As to normalcy, homosexuality is quite normal, as it can be observed in nature. The only difference is, animals don't hate each other for it, we leave that to the beasts of the world to do. - Mal |

Stephen Colbert announces his run for President!

While he did make a lot of political speeches (mostly scare speeches about communists hiding in Hollywood), he was hardly a political powerhouse before becoming President. I don't think it requires experience to be President, only awareness. Which is why Bush is a bad president. - Mal

Another Republican Official Caught Toe-Tapping In Bathroom Stall

Originally posted by renstimpy99 No, no, no... see, if Democrats didn't invent gayness and sodomy, well.. then Republicans wouldn't accidentally fall for our evil tricks and traps. Or wait wait wait... I bet this guy is an evil Democrat posing as a Republican, just to make them look bad.
It's funny that gays can't just be accepted by these Republicans, considering there is a good chance that every single one of them is homosexual. Oh well, it must be fun for them to just hate everything that is not them. I think I would get tired of it fairly quickly. - Mal |

Originally posted by HotAznBoy90xNot that it matters in the least to me, never even heard of the series, but you might want to add a notice that there is a *SPOILER*... maybe? Your title gave absolutely no information on what was coming, so anyone who now reads the first book will know quite a bit of information about it. Perhaps enough to avoid reading it at all. The more I think about it, I'm afraid I'm going to have to call you a jerk for your lack of sensitivity to literature and the enjoyment others gain from it. Jerk. - Mal |

Discworld Series. But only because Terry Pratchett is the closest thing to a god that will ever exist. Dresden Series by Jim Butcher. I agree with Flem, David Gemmell is a worthy read.
I suppose I don't understand what the fascination is with LotR. I respect it for being the grandfather of modern fantasy (orcs, elves, dwarves, etc.)* However, 3/4 of the material in each book could be cut (Tom Bombadil and the neverending Return of the King, anyone?) I honestly feel, with the editing involved, the movies are better than the books, and that is such a rare feeling. The closest I've come to feeling that is with Fight Club, in which the movie and the book are on equal footing, in my opinion. Again, I realize the hard work that he put into the books, the foundation it laid for modern fantasy, but from his style of prose I get the feeling that guy really loved to listen to himself speak. Maybe he deserves his place in the canon, however, it is not the end all of fantasy, and this wind-bag author is certainly not the best. I would rank any of the above listed authors as far superior in storytelling ability. - Mal

What do I read after Icewind Dale?

I enjoyed this series when I was about 15 or so, but never could get past the idea that *SPOILER ALERT* Salvatore has a problem with actually killing a character off. Not to mention the 'swordsmanship' of Drizzt is beyond belief (even for a fantasy series). I can't go back to reading this type of book, especially knowing there is so much more out there waiting. If you find enjoyment in the series, then by all means get it while you can and gobble it up. Other suggestions for books: Mary Doria Russell's - 'The Sparrow' and 'Children of God' Jim Butcher's - Dresden series (sometimes the endings fail, but still worthwhile) Robert J Sawyer's - 'Illegal Alien' and 'Calculating God' Terry Pratchett's Discworld Series - especially 'Guards! Guards!' David Gemmell - Drenai series, Rigante series, etc. etc. Orson Scott Card's - Ender books (although it irritates me how he gives kids way too much intelligence and critical thinking skills) C.S. Friedman's - Coldfire Trilogy

The best MP FPS is, in my opinion, Soldier of Fortune 2. It has been four years since its release, and you will still find an active community with numerous clans and competitive matches. The graphics are still okay, the sounds are okay, and the play is great. It can be heavily modded (I run a Star Wars mod with sounds and visuals, my roommate runs a modified standard look and sound). It runs punkbuster, however, people sometimes cheat, as with any game I suppose. There are several well laid out maps that can be a lot of fun to play. I suggest running game type 'Infiltration' on the MRU or T@ server. If you lack skill with FPSs, then I suggest avoiding SOF2. It is not easy, and it will take some time to be average. The reason for this is that it is a very precise game. You don't spray and pray, you don't run into the open and randomly take people out. Instead, you take your time, you aim with precision, and you fire in a controlled burst. Because of this, it is a slower game than most are used to, but the tactics are unlike anything you will find on the market today. I purchased Enemy Territory: Quake Wars last night... I played for a couple of hours and then went back to SOF2. I like precision, and if I see something that looks like you can jump on it, or over it, then I like to be able to actually jump on it, or over it. Anyway, probably more information than you care for, but there you have it. - Mal |

Yikes, Engrish ftl, eh? This company really needs to hire someone to edit their news posts, and most likely their game. A common problem with most translated/foreign games. And some people say a degree in English is useless... bah! To Suzhou Snail Electronic Co.: If you're selling to English speakers, at the least, try to budget for clean-up of writing in posts and in-game content. Your customers will thank you for it... well, not really, but they won't fault you for it at least. - Mal

Originally posted by DekronWhile Tom Cruise has a lot of baggage, and therefore would have been a poor choice, Robert Downey Jr is hardly in the same boat. I dare say that his name is not one that people rely on to make a movie great. It is possible that there is an unknown actor that could have played the part of Tony Stark, but they went with a known entity instead of the unknown... usually a safer bet when producing a multi-million dollar movie. And besides, I'm sure his experience will bring something to this movie that an unknown or unheard of actor would not. I would say, with billions of people to choose from, there are better choices for every part that has ever existed. Bob down the street playing Gandalf instead of Ian McKellen. Anyone, and I mean anyone, over that kid that played young Anakin in Episode I. I would say that the IP Ironman is bigger than the name Robert Downey Jr, and therefore it will be fine on its own - especially among its intended audience. As for your comment of 'not believable'... it's a dude in a high tech flying suit of armor with frigg'n laser beams shooting from his hands and chest... the part that is unbelievable is RD Jr? - Mal

Seems to follow the original storyline fairly well. The original comic book had him in Vietnam, and fighting communism. To update it to our modern world, and against terrorists, seems reasonable to me. The fact that he is using the suit for escape instead of survival is fine as well. For an example of how this works, see the animated version that was recently released - set in China. Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark is pure genius. I remember when the idea of Tom Cruise as Tony was bounced around... that would have been a disaster. I think this will be an entertaining movie. I'm game. - Mal |
