Well, there's no way in hell a relative hack writer like Lucas can hope to match JMS, so don't plan on this being like B5.  Lucas does not have that sort of depth of story in him.

That being said, this sounds, conceptually, very much like the original SWG premise: the story of the extras being told, not the major players, of the SW universe.

How this will go over with Lucas' own marketing department, which is lightsabers, lightsabers, lightsabers will be interesting to observe.

While B5 had an epic storyline, it failed miserably in dialogue.  Not to mention that any extra that appeared on the show had the acting talent of a street vendor or, well... me.  So, JMS was no genius when it came to dialogue, but his story certainly had continuity.   Not sure what he is thinking with the B5 tales.  Man, those things suck nuts.

As for SW, I'm pretty much done with it.  Lucas managed to take a wonderful franchise and grind it into nothing.  I seriously hate him for it.  I still remember going with my dad to the drive-in theater and watching the first movie and then receiving SW toys on Xmas day.   Was pretty cool.

But who knows, maybe if Lucas limits himself to a shoestring budget he can pull something off that will be worth watching.  Seriously, someone take away his computers.

I think she is a grade A jerk for saying that now, after the fact.  A lot of people loved those novels and the world she created.  But she never said anything about Dumbledore being gay in the books.

But now, when she no longer needs fan loyalty, she pronounces that Dumbledore is gay.  To me it seems like she's just trying to upset people.  Sticking it to her fans with a kind of childish, "Nya Nya Nya na Nya na!" attitude.

"Oh you know this story you all loved so much?  Well...GUESS WHAT!"

What piece of crap she is.  Because this will taint the series for a lot of people.  The decent thing for her to do would have been to simply leave it open to individual intterpretation.

This reminds of something from way, way back when I was just a pre-school tot.  I remember I liked the Puff the Magic Dragon song.  Remember I was just a itty bitty kid.  Then some arsehole went to the trouble of explaining to me that it was all just a metaphore for drug use.  What a jerk.  It tainted something I enjoyed..and for absolutely no reason.

I still don't understand how having a gay character in a book ruins it? There have been gay characters in many books, movies, television shows, etc etc... does that ruin it? I would have to say, no, it does not ruin it for mature, thinking adults and children.  I think it's pretty cool that Rowling is further explaining the many facets of her imaginary world, a lot of authors wouldn't go to the trouble.

*SPOILER ALERT*

I'm not sure if you realize it or not, but the real world has gay people in it.  Hope that didn't spoil anything!  But I will leave it up to your individual interpretation.

Cheers,

I know nothing about the series, don't watch the movies.

When I heard this on the news I thought, does the character's sexuality have importance to the storyline?

If not then why state they are homosexual vs heterosexual?

Sounds like more homosexual normalcy agenda propoganda by the left.

It isn't important to the storyline, which is most likely why it did not appear in the books -- when would an old man at a school for children begin talking about his sex life? This isn't Catholic School.

As to normalcy, homosexuality is quite normal, as it can be observed in nature.  The only difference is, animals don't hate each other for it, we leave that to the beasts of the world to do.

Get off your god damn high horse and look at it like the joke that it is.

How am I on a high horse when I want a qualified candidate for President? There hasn't been a good president in this country since Reagan.

Reagan was an actor and then two term governor of California before going on to become President.  While he did make a lot of political speeches (mostly scare speeches about communists hiding in Hollywood), he was hardly a political powerhouse before becoming President.  I don't think it requires experience to be President, only awareness.  Which is why Bush is a bad president.

You know... taking an apolitical stance here... wouldn't anyone paying attention to the news figure out that this foot tapping thing is a bad idea?

Just saying.

I guess when you're living a second secret life you get it where and when you can.

My question is, why can't people who are gay be allowed to be who they are?  Then this kind of crap wouldn't happen all the time.

What amazes me is that the Democrats use this against the Republicans. The Demos point out that it is wrong for him to do this, to be gay, etc., etc., but then they are the ones trying to promote "gay rights". Go figure.

Im getting dizzy from reading this. Consider applying for a job at the no spin zone at fox news.

No, no, no... see, if Democrats didn't invent gayness and sodomy, well.. then Republicans wouldn't accidentally fall for our evil tricks and traps.  Or wait wait wait... I bet this guy is an evil Democrat posing as a Republican, just to make them look bad.

It's funny that gays can't just be accepted by these Republicans, considering there is a good chance that every single one of them is homosexual.  Oh well, it must be fun for them to just hate everything that is not them.  I think I would get tired of it fairly quickly.

Okay. I am reading the Shadow Children series. I am on the first book "Among the hidden" and finished it in about 3 hours. So the kids that go on rally agaisnt the goverment all get shot by the population police. Does Jen or any other kids survive?

Not that it matters in the least to me, never even heard of the series, but you might want to add a notice that there is a *SPOILER*... maybe? Your title gave absolutely no information on what was coming, so anyone who now reads the first book will know quite a bit of information about it.  Perhaps enough to avoid reading it at all.

The more I think about it, I'm afraid I'm going to have to call you a jerk for your lack of sensitivity to literature and the enjoyment others gain from it.  Jerk.

Discworld Series.  But only because Terry Pratchett is the closest thing to a god that will ever exist.

Dresden Series by Jim Butcher.

I agree with Flem, David Gemmell is a worthy read.

I suppose I don't understand what the fascination is with LotR.  I respect it for being the grandfather of modern fantasy (orcs, elves, dwarves, etc.)*  However, 3/4 of the material in each book could be cut (Tom Bombadil and the neverending Return of the King, anyone?)  I honestly feel, with the editing involved, the movies are better than the books, and that is such a rare feeling.  The closest I've come to feeling that is with Fight Club, in which the movie and the book are on equal footing, in my opinion.   Again, I realize the hard work that he put into the books, the foundation it laid for modern fantasy, but from his style of prose I get the feeling that guy really loved to listen to himself speak.  Maybe he deserves his place in the canon, however, it is not the end all of fantasy, and this wind-bag author is certainly not the best.   I would rank any of the above listed authors as far superior in storytelling ability.

I'd recommend the Wheel of Time series, by Robert Jordan, but the plot has become convoluted (there are like 6 plot lines running in the same book) and I'm not sure if he's ever actually going to finish the damn thing.

He died.  His wife will finish it, at some point.

I enjoyed this series when I was about 15 or so, but never could get past the idea that *SPOILER ALERT* Salvatore has a problem with actually killing a character off.  Not to mention the 'swordsmanship' of Drizzt is beyond belief (even for a fantasy series).  I can't go back to reading this type of book, especially knowing there is so much more out there waiting.  If you find enjoyment in the series, then by all means get it while you can and gobble it up.

Other suggestions for books:

Mary Doria Russell's - 'The Sparrow' and 'Children of God'

Jim Butcher's - Dresden series (sometimes the endings fail, but still worthwhile)

Robert J Sawyer's - 'Illegal Alien' and 'Calculating God'

Terry Pratchett's Discworld Series - especially 'Guards! Guards!'

David Gemmell - Drenai series, Rigante series, etc. etc.

Orson Scott Card's - Ender books (although it irritates me how he gives kids way too much intelligence and critical thinking skills)

C.S. Friedman's - Coldfire Trilogy

Almost every word out of Saddam's mouth has been a lie.  Oh but I guess we should believe him now because of some supposed conversation.  Please, if this was something that would make Bush look good it would automatically be shot down as a lie, made up, or simply false.  Amazing how some people just believe anything.  Now I'm not disputing the story is true, just that people would believe Saddam would just step and down.  Nazi's were put to death at Nuremburg for less then Saddam did.  Wake up people.

I would gamble one billion and see if Saddam would leave. It would be worth it.

It might have been worth it, hell our govt probably wastes that much money a day in pork barrel spending.  If good ole Kennedy would have a few less drinks he could have paid for it himself hahaha

See how easy it was? You just broke rule #1 by avoiding the argument and attacking Senator Kennedy personally.  *yawn*

The best MP FPS is, in my opinion, Soldier of Fortune 2.  It has been four years since its release, and you will still find an active community with numerous clans and competitive matches.

The graphics are still okay, the sounds are okay, and the play is great.  It can be heavily modded (I run a Star Wars mod with sounds and visuals, my roommate runs a modified standard look and sound).  It runs punkbuster, however, people sometimes cheat, as with any game I suppose.  There are several well laid out maps that can be a lot of fun to play.  I suggest running game type 'Infiltration' on the MRU or T@ server.

If you lack skill with FPSs, then I suggest avoiding SOF2.  It is not easy, and it will take some time to be average.  The reason for this is that it is a very precise game.  You don't spray and pray, you don't run into the open and randomly take people out.  Instead, you take your time, you aim with precision, and you fire in a controlled burst.   Because of this, it is a slower game than most are used to, but the tactics are unlike anything you will find on the market today.

I purchased Enemy Territory: Quake Wars last night... I played for a couple of hours and then went back to SOF2.  I like precision, and if I see something that looks like you can jump on it, or over it, then I like to be able to actually jump on it, or over it.

Anyway, probably more information than you care for, but there you have it.

Gods and Generals... it was like watching a prayer group, not a movie.  I walked out.

Battlefield Earth is a close second.

Yikes, Engrish ftl, eh? This company really needs to hire someone to edit their news posts, and most likely their game.  A common problem with most translated/foreign games.   And some people say a degree in English is useless... bah!

To Suzhou Snail Electronic Co.: If you're selling to English speakers, at the least, try to budget for clean-up of writing in posts and in-game content.  Your customers will thank you for it... well, not really, but they won't fault you for it at least.

As for your comment of 'not believable'... it's a dude in a high tech flying suit of armor with frigg'n laser beams shooting from his hands and chest... the part that is unbelievable is RD Jr?

I don't mean believable in a realistic sense, but as in him fitting the part. And yes, RD Jr has way more problems than Tom.  RD Jr is a coke head and a psychotic.

At least hes not a scientolgist. So at least he has his feet on the ground and living in reality.

True dat.  Even if it is a coked out reality.  I still think he is great for the part of a millionaire playboy with an arrogant attitude and selfish ways.  Anyone bothered by Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper? I didn't notice that until recently... yikes.

Yeah, it sucks that WoT won't be finished now.

On the up side, he won't be butchering the Conan IP anymore

I enjoyed his Conan books more than the WoT.  I thought he captured the spirit of the Conan world perfectly, and his writing style was completely different from the WoT, which is always good.

Movies based on an IP such as this (or any other comic book movie) should not rely on the name of the actor. I bet anything there were many unknowns and unheard of actors that would better fit this part. They are counting on people to see it because of the actor and not wholly the story.

These actors have been around for so long and have played varying roles that when thrust into a movie such as this, it is not believable.

While Tom Cruise has a lot of baggage, and therefore would have been a poor choice, Robert Downey Jr is hardly in the same boat.  I dare say that his name is not one that people rely on to make a movie great.  It is possible that there is an unknown actor that could have played the part of Tony Stark, but they went with a known entity instead of the unknown... usually a safer bet when producing a multi-million dollar movie.  And besides, I'm sure his experience will bring something to this movie that an unknown or unheard of actor would not.  I would say, with billions of people to choose from, there are better choices for every part that has ever existed.  Bob down the street playing Gandalf instead of Ian McKellen.  Anyone, and I mean anyone, over that kid that played young Anakin in Episode I.

I would say that the IP Ironman is bigger than the name Robert Downey Jr, and therefore it will be fine on its own - especially among its intended audience.

As for your comment of 'not believable'... it's a dude in a high tech flying suit of armor with frigg'n laser beams shooting from his hands and chest... the part that is unbelievable is RD Jr?

Seems to follow the original storyline fairly well.  The original comic book had him in Vietnam, and fighting communism.  To update it to our modern world, and against terrorists, seems reasonable to me.  The fact that he is using the suit for escape instead of survival is fine as well.  For an example of how this works, see the animated version that was recently released - set in China.  Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark is pure genius.  I remember when the idea of Tom Cruise as Tony was bounced around... that would have been a disaster.  I think this will be an entertaining movie.   I'm game.
