I think Ryzom's vendor system is really one of its best features. If nobody buys your stuff, you get base vendor price, regardless. So there's no way to lose. =)

9. Start small.  Make it great and then release expansions.

Sure. So the people who will have grinded in 1 or 2 weeks to the end of their small world will be sitting there without anything else to do. So they will come back in masses to Vanguard's huge world which will have improved by then.

As important as that type of player tends to think of themselves, that kind of 'content devouring' player is in the minority. Any game that tries to cater to the player with no life who can play 8-12 hours a day, can never keep up, nor should they even try.

I said 'scrapped for release' . Thanks for 'correcting' me by saying exactly what I'd just said.

I won't be buying a game that only has the boring old (resized/pointy-eared human) race choices, so if they want to push Suwari back to their first expansion more power to them, I won't even look at the game 'til then, in that case. Hopefully I won't be playing another game with friends that I won't want to leave, when that happens.

Interesting how he doesn't mention that the Suwari race (featured in many screenshots) have been scrapped for release.  So aside from vague details, no real news for months except for what's been taken OUT, my interest in this game has pretty much gone out the window.

Originally posted by Zaush Working to overcome obstacles, even tedium, was one of the challenges that make games fun IMO.

Most sane people think that getting a crumb of fun after days of monotony is not worth paying a monthly fee for, sorry to say.

From looking at those comparisons, I'd have to say:

Vanguard's greatest weakness is poor lighting, imo. With bad lighting, stuff just looks dull and sterile. LotR uses colored light and such better,  which complements their models. The best models in the world, if lighted badly, will not hold up as well to a scene that is pulled together better.

That is in no way, shape or form the spirit of a MMORPG game. Where did this shift begin?!?!?

It baffles me too.

I miss this game from time to time... I miss the world. I miss my dragon.  I don't understand why! The game was so broken...

I would fly across zones, and find really cool stuff out in the middle of nowhere, and be sad there was no purpose for it.  I think that even with the graphics' age, the design of the world itself was very well done. Too bad there were no mobs or life or purpose to 90% of those interesting-looking places. But as an Explorer type of player, I guess that's what I really enjoyed, regardless of the majority of the game having no point but as a crafting grind.

Met some very nice people too, I guess the community was what held this thing together. And I really have to say, another game needs to have dragons as a race, similar to how Horizons did, and do it right. If dragons could keep HZ gasping along for as long as it did, just on their own, imagine what a better game could get from having them! Outside of the player towns, and dragons, there is really very little else that really was interesting gameplay-wise about HZ, in my opinion.

Even so... I miss HZ sometimes. I have the music files in my playlist and get all nostalgic when I hear them. And then I wonder what is it that makes me feel that way? Some kind of HZ secret sauce or hidden masochist gene or something. Anyone else ever feel like this?

Yah, company shills go thru a lot of trouble to build up a forum rep and seem like 'real' users before they start spreading their paid-for positive reviews of whatever product they're hired to hype.

So really, posting history means nothing towards someone's credibility. If they're posting obviously biased, candy-coated BS, who cares about how long they've been a member? It's still BS. o_O

How about game mechanics and server that actually work? Just a guess.

Just like what Tulga did? My gawd, hasn't this game and it's community been abused enough?!

Um, that was't what the article was about at all. Actually reading it might've helped.

For me, the really interesting oddity of the wow playerbase is WHY people play for months or even years after finishing the game? running the same instances over and over... it's mind-numbing. I have to think it's because of the friends they have made in game, I can't concieve of what else it could be...

Basically.

I've done every bit of content in the game, over 3 60s, and all the raid instances but Naxxramas. It's pretty much boring as heck right now for me, I'm in a holding pattern until BC, because really, I've done every 5-man dungeon hundreds of times each and its just pointless to log in now except to chat with my friends. There isnt anything else I can do ingame.

But I had lots of fun that first year and a half, I only hope the expansion content lasts that long for PvE-type people like me. I love quests and grouping most of all, not really big on PvP. So we'll see.

But the limited scope of WoW is its biggest weakness. Also the reliance on scripted dungeon content only, with no allowance for player-interaction like housing or crafting or better visual character customisation. I mean, more than 4 customizing options per race would be nice, honestly.

What is really unusual is that we as gamers are always complaining about the same old formula being used to make MMO's but we don't put our money where our mouth is.

As long as games that try to be different, keep failing or have a small following we are going to continue getting the same old crap.

Guess what it is our fault.

So the next time you complain about MMO's look in the mirror.  Its not the companies its us.

   QFT, unfortunately.

Anyway, here is a link to my encounter with a member from wow's community today.

Post a couple more of these, they're awesome and thought provoking and say stuff that we have never heard before! Noobs in WoW? WoW's community sucks?! OMG! Let's talk about this in depth, over and over! And over!

Thats the reason why it's hated so much.  The core MMO community wants more niche games, and doesnt want the icky/noob factor to blemish their untarnished ubarness.

You have the entire professional reviewing community against you as well (which gave WoW across the board great ratings, and they are not n00bs) ... and I know you will say it isn't relavant, but au contraire, it is.  It's fine for YOU to not like WoW, it was not designed for everyone.

My gawd, a voice of reason!

Same here. The fact that there is no Universal Chat, and all the regions in the game are so 'cut up' into segregated chat channels, makes communication and meeting new people while youre out in the world, pretty impossible. Lots of people in the 100+ zones, so those are lively, but until you get there, its mostly dead silent in the region chats.

They should make each region one channel (Lakelands/Zorai Jungle/Matis Forest/Desertlands). I think that would help a lot in bringing together all the people playing in that region.

Having a guild helps this a bit, however. But playing on your own out there is lonely, not even people to smalltalk with half the time, unless you wanna break the rules in the help channel. =P
