I like the idea of Rifts, but I think the problem would become the same thing it becomes in the RPG; eveyone wants to play an MDC charachter or a juicer and my poor Geomatic Immortal gets his ass killed by some freakin dragon or Cosmo-knight. You would have to find some way to put everyone on equal footing, but that would kinda ruin the flavor of the game. I guess you could make it where everyone had to play SDC charachters. |

There is no way. The game has just gotten too dated. If they were to take the exact same game and put the AC2 graphics into the game and tweak the game play, add some more quests to it (it's been a long time since I played, so I don't know if they have done that. I mean, back when I played, the Mattekar Coat was THE BOMB. And everyone had at least 1 set of Amuli. So, my information may be a little dated.) I think had they had a little more point to the game (not like most of the MMO's now have a point, but you know what I mean) and perhaps something more in the end game content, it might still be fun. But, with all that being said, I had fun playing that game for about 2 and a half years. I used to spend countless hours in the Acid Vault just killing Olthoi and going to the Obsidian Plains and shooting up some Tusker Guards. Man, those were some fun times. |

There are so many great authors out there for the Sci-fi/Fantasy genre that haven't really been touched. I think something from Philip K. Dick would be awesome. Total Recall or, better then that, Bladerunner. Not really sure how you would implement either one, though. Robert Heinlein would be awesome. Starship Troopers (as long as you stay away from that abomination of a movie) would be an incredible game. You could have the 3 main factions that were mentioned in the books (humans, bugs, and the skinnies) and fight over planets. KoTOR would be really cool, but again, not sure how you would implement that while still maintaining the integrity of the game and what made it great. Anything based on the DND universe would be cool as long as they didn't base the game on the DND rules (planewalker thing would be awesome, but I think you would get stuck in Ravenloft. Not sure, it's been a while). I don't think it's much fun to play a wizard or sorcerer and only be able to cast 3 spells per dungeon. Granted, that is a bit of an exaggeration, but you get my point. Those kind of things work on table top, where a days campaign takes 3 weeks and most of the game consists of guys asking where the Mountain Dew is and wondering why the paladin just decided to put the druids wolf up on the alter to see if it would turn the wolf to stone. NWN didn't take the 3rd edition rules that far. Nothing by Whitewolf would work, in my opinion. Those games are not designed to be action RPG's. They are meant for social interaction with a dark world back drop. IMO, I think those games are just not very fun. Mechwarrior would be cool, but yet again, not sure how you would implement it. Guess it would have to be skill based. Guess maybe as you gain more experience, you can add tonage to your mech. Dang it, they need to come out with a new Mechwarrior game. It's been like 7 or 8 years since Mechwarrior 4. DUNE I think would work best of all the ones mentioned and would be the most original. About 8 years ago, a french company was working on an MMRTS game that just didn't pan out because the studio went under about 8-10 months before the game was scheduled for release. DUNE is one of those franchises where you could have hundreds of factions and it would go along with the story no problem. Of course, I believe you would want to stay within the first 3 books. Hmmm..wonder if I can get the rights to that IP. At any rate, that's my thoughts on the topic. Nothing really new there, but I'm sure someone is going to flame me for my thougts on Whitewolf. |

DAoC and GW are not really designed to be PvP, the are designed to be either RvR (DAoC) or GvG (a la, GuildWars, as the title implies). Shadowbane is PvP and completely brutal. What other game do you have to be 100 percent on your toes at all times to watch for theives who can pick pocket anything in your inventory and disappear before you even know anything is missing. This is the only game that I played where PvP ACTUALLY meant something. There was a "care bear" area for charachters that were level 20 and below, but once you reached level 20, you either left the island or you killed level 20 mobs for the rest of your career. Once you leave the island, you are fair game for the rest of your charachters life. So, once you hit the main land, you look for a guild and you do it quick, as it is your best chance for survival. Even that is not a guarantee for life, as there is nothing to keep people out of your territories except for other players in your guild and your city guards (who stay in your city, so they don't patrol out in the woods or anything where you are hunting). The point of the game is for your guild to control the world, so your are constantly at war with other guilds. It's just freaking hard core.Of course, PvP being that in depth is extraordinarilly time consuming. Asheron's Call had some awesome PvP, as well. You could actually particpate in PvP 2 different ways. They had a completely PvP server (Darktide) where it was a FFA. There was no real point to it, but it was just fun. Someone mentioned earlier that you had to have Magic to be any good, which is pretty true, but EVERYONE had magic in that game. I was playing an archer who had 3 out of the 4 schools of magic (Blooddrinker 6 on your 113 yumi and on your Greater AP Arrows did a lot of damage. Of course, it was just 1 shot, but it was a good shot! :)) One of the best things about AC was the way they allowed you to create your charachters. You could have any skill you wanted in the game. You only had a certain number of points to spend, but that was the only restriction. The other form of PvP they had in the game was on the "Care-bear" servers, where you could turn yourself in to a PvP charachter and do battle with other PvP charachters. In order to become PvP, you had to do a quest, which was not too hard to complete, just hard to get to the area to do it. The quest involved you swearing allegiance to Bael'Zharon at his alter. Once that happened, you were PvP for good and would show up as a red dot on everyone's radar from now on. The only way to become non-PvP again was to complete another quest, which first involved not killing any players for a set amount of time (I believe it was 2 hours, but can't remember) and then going to the altar of Asheron and swearing allegiance to him. It was pretty freakin awesome. Man, I miss that game. I know it is still out there, but it's like they say, "You can never go home again." |

No one wins. We all lose. And in 25 years when our asses have grown to the size of the moon and we all have ulcers, brown teeth, and no hair, we can blame MMO's for sapping the life out of us and Mountain Dew for everything else. Screw it, I'm movig to the Mojave desert to train! |

WAR dev - AoC was nominated at GC and WAR wasn't - "Skunked", so I'll hit on AO and praise DAoC instead...

Damn, people. It's like you guys have something more invested in these games then a longing to play and more time then you know what to do with. Stop bashing AoC and stop bashing WAR. People are going to play what they want and people are going to switch games and then reminisce about the old days when they used to play (Generic Game X) and how that game kicked so much ass and how this new game pales in comparison and how they wished that they would remake (Game X) with new graphics and a couple of tweaks here and there. Man, I really miss Asheron's Call. |

So, since I imagine your next post is going to be another article refuting my article, let's just agree to disagree. You have your thoughts on second gen and what is included in there, I have mine, the sky will still be blue, and women will still have secrets. It's all good. :) |

AC2 was released in Nov of 2002. EQ2 was released in Nov. 2004. I don't rememer ever seeing comparisons between these 2 games. AC2 was groundbreaking when it came out. If anything, I would call it a "half" generation. I played AC2 for a while and I can tell you the reason I didn't stay was because AC1 had the most unique and. in my opinion, best charachter creation and development system around. AC2 had that weird "tech tree" thing. So, if you want to classify AC2 and EQ2 as the same generation, that is your perogative. I personally just don't see it. Rather, I believe AC2 belongs to a different generation of games that would include SWG (released April 2003) and Shadowbane (released March 2003) |

Do you remember the old MMORPG's? The really good ones...
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 8/25/07 1:17:43 PM
First thing, I don't really think NWN is considered an MMO. Isn't it like a max of 8 players? Anyway, I used to play Asheron's Call back in the day. Mostly on Leafcull, but I was known to play on Darktide as well. From there, I went on to play a little EQ, but wasn't very impressed with the game. I think it was Shadowbane after that and from there, who knows? |

That's weird. I'm pretty sure that Asheron's Call had more then 120,000 subs. Wouldn't swear to it, though. Personally, I think this whole argument is retarded. As Rodney King said, "Can't we all just get along?" |

Also, as much as people want to claim it, there really aren't that many "mature" people playing MMO's. I played DAoC for years (no matter how dry the game was) and people on there were just as immature as they were on WoW (even on the Horde side). Instead of taking stab at each others games, we should all learn to respect each other's games. Calling someone elses game "childish" or "crap" or whatever other disparaging remarks you will make is not going to endear your game to them. People know what they like and what they don't like. If you want to pull people over to your game, give them a healthy comparison of a similar game. Damn it, people! We need to stick together, not tear each other apart. |

I would love to see a survial horror mmo
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 8/15/07 7:04:11 PM
Hmmm...interesting. I had not thought of like a 2 week training period. Could be kinda like the intro to Guild Wars but, you know, cool. So what kind of zombies should the game have, fast or slow? Man, I just want to play this freakin game now, and it's not even a game! My mind is just racing with ideas that I can't form yet. |

Dude, that is freaking brilliant! I would so play that game. Your spelling leaves a little to be desired, but you still may be a genius. Why the hell hasn't someone made that game yet? I mean, Left 4 Dead is coming out soon, but it's a FPS with multiplayer. Not really what you are talking about (although I am chomping at the bit to play that damn game, too.) The Secret world looks pretty cool, too. Little more Call of Cthulu-espue then what I was thinking, but it may be a little too early to say that just from the few shots. Anyway, back to the Zombie game, I'm seeing everything taking place in a huge city. It's pretty much always after dark in the city (not sure why, but it has to be dark.) Basically, what I am thinking is like Atlanta in the first issue of "The Walking Dead". Maybe even give the game like a life span ,say 4 years or something so you can have an all around purpose (probably be a first for an MMO). You gotta try and find out why the undead are here (alien infestation, hell over flowing, virus, etc.) Man, I just don't know. There are so many possiblities. I'm going to start writting stuff down and see what looks good. |
