There is actally a .hack MMO called .hack//fragment, sadly it was accounced reasently that it would never leave Japan, and it closed it's servers this month.. It's a shame .hack could have been one of the best MMOs, I gyess they prefer the simulated versons.. Added: Wikki link to game |

I do agree with you, MMOs used to be community > All.. Now it's just convert exsisting MMOs/make a single player game (essencilly a console game) but for lots of players instead.. But sadly thats what sellis these days the 'L33T 14 year olds' control the MMO market now |

I've already pointed out how it wouldn't work in my post, I suspect you have just seen 'Wii' in the topic and just put that in to pad your post count.. If your gonna post in this topic at least read the OP |

100% agree with you there.. No need to repeat what I already said in another tpopic so i'll just link it: http://mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/103342 |

Yea, I'll agree the 360 is the most logical choice (being that it is pracitally a PC), same can be said with AoC.. but to also point out the 'porting to Wii' part of the topic was a general view 'if' it did happen not implying that any game 'is' or 'should' |

Now theres been a LOT of 'wanting' an MMO to to be a Nindendo based product and/or an MMO to be ported to the Wii, now being a Nintendo geek I've LOVE that to happen HOWEVER theres a few flaws in that plan... Lets start with the easy question 'Can a Nintendo game turn MMO?' answer: Very Few.. Why?.. Let me explain.. The 'well known' Nintendo games have always worked along these lines.. theres a Hero, a Vililan, and a Item/Girl, Villan kidnapps/takes item, Hero sets out to save girl/retrive item, Hero defeats Villian, all is well.. Prime example and often requested to be turned MMO is Mario and Zelda, both follow that basic plotline. Now although damn fine single player titles but to be turned MMO? They wouldn't work, simply because we no longer have that one hero, we have multiple, and there no longer is a quest to save whatever as the quest is on going, why this doesn't work, becuase the main essence of the game is the story, it's focused on the hero, everything that happens revoles around that one character, now to put multiple heroes in the mix in that world takes focus off that one character thus diluts the story, I know this seems hard to truy and get your head around the logic right now, but the story is the key.. Now on the flip side SOME Nintendo titles DO fit the MMO profile, prime target for this is Pokemon, again the game hero/villian/quest aspect to it HOWEVER as there have been multiple titles with multiple heroes, although ultimatly having the same goals, but the key to the reason why this one fits and others don't is that our hero isn't the only person on this 'quest'.. I know by now some people reading this are going 'WTF is he rambling on about?', but to briefly sum up, to port a single player game to an MMO, you have to look at one thing, if the world is only effected by a single character, to take that away from the 'hero' would destroy the 'reason' for the story.. Now to port a Non-Nintendo MMO to the Wii, thats a different can o' worms altogether, simple reasoning behind this is hardware.. One thing thats come to my notice is that MMOs are needing higher and higher specs of PC, now with the 360 and PS3 they have hardware thats top of the line, however the Wii doesn't.. Why is this important? Simple.. Compatiblity.. Now you think PC vs the Wii witch of the two would have better control and easier access to funtions? Of course the PC, sorry to say this console fans 'PC > Console'.. Now at this point a bet your saying 'Well just don't have them combined, have one server for PC and one for Wii..' Yup, I'd agree that is a better idea, however beleave you me that given the option players WOULD indeed pick the PC verson over it's console counterpart, becuase unless the game was build around the console first then ported to PC (like FFXI), the console verson would have lower grafical appeal, less funtionality, and a greater chance of error, so the player market would be far smaller for the Wii, and with the fickleness of console gamers, a shorter lifespan.. To conclude my possible illogical ramblings, IF you want a MMO for the Wii make sure that 1) One it is designed for the Wii first and 2) If it's a Nintendo product look for one that is capable of expanding it's storyline.. As I said like you I'd LOVE for it to happen. but getting it to work is another matter |

Sorry to jump in so late, but I do agree they do check on enteries for beta contests, otherwise it's pointless for both them and the company that gave MMORPG.com those keys.. Anyway.. about the 'rating issue' I highly agree that account bombing by a fanboi to boost his game up makes the system totally unrealistic, a simple solution to this is split the ratings up, on the main page show MMORPG's score and once clicked on the games info page again show the same score AND the player's score.. then ppl can hype up the the game as much as they want (because thats all the scorce is now 'hype') but a 'true' score will be always shown, maybe a 3rd avg score given by the long term members reviews so basically they'll be MMORPG's Score, Player Reveiw Score, and then the Hype meter score.. thus giving a better picture of the game in question |

It's 'basic' arena pvp, think of it as an 'added bonus' from the intened game (hence the reverse of WoW), DDO is still a PVE dungeon crawler, but it's turning into a damn good one..

The two greatest RPG licenses, lost to us! (for now) [D+D, LOTR]
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 11/08/06 5:09:07 PM
Now relax my friend.. no need to go OTT with this.. In DDO's defence, the poor game IS trying to cope with being compeared to againest it's singleplayer cousins (ie Baldur's Gate/Never Winter Nights to name the main two), would YOU like to try an adapt a limitless game (witch true D&D is btw) to a digital format that HAS to have limits? It's hard when it's offline, but turning into a MMO it's pracitally insane!! I gotta admit I did beta DDO and was very dissapointed in it and guess what? I'm back playing it again.. thats the wonderful thing about MMOs THEY GROW, this disscusson as been on this forum before and I stand by what I said smaller games do FAR better in the long run as there are less demands to be met.. Again take our favourate refference point WoW.. Now poor poor Blizzard, being the nice people they are, are flip flopping all the time as they meet the 'casual' players demand, then upset the 'raiding' players, so have to meet their demands and they have what.. a 7 million-ish player base to 'keep happy'.. Same can be said about content, you can offer bucket loads of content to begin with but who is to say all that content will be used, and not just bepassed for end-game (again like WoW).. Now all that waffle I just said leads m back to DDO and LotR.. Now your going 'TURBINE HAS DESTROYED D&D/LOTR!!' I'm saying I bet you dollors to donuts Turbine havn't even started, they have been cleaver they've started small and building games as they go. They are adding what people want, not just dumping in content and turning around and saying 'like it or lump it'.. With that in mind whos to say in 12 months BOTH games wont turn out to be the best thing since sliced bread? Others games have done it, why can't these? Fatal mistake here is that people always conpare, always set the bar too high, and always expect too much.. Remember this tho: 'Next big things' have fallen, it's been proven right in front of people's eyes this year, yet the 'minor, crappy, low player base' games are still plodding on, and still enjoyed |

OMG lineage II is soooooo boring.
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 11/08/06 4:37:48 PM
TBH First impressons of the game don't look too good, having empty areas do take the 'MM' out of MMO.. It looks a soild system tho, both click and arrow movements, thats good, a tutorial that speaks to you, very rare to find but always helpful.. I'll play it out the full trial myself, it's a shame I can't give it my full attention tho, hopfully I'll get to the 'good stuff' before it expires :) |

I think it's stress test season for it, I myself am currently looking at it updating... Anyway it's interesting how there seems to be two versons of it (US having to go through another program, EU have direct access to it). Love to see how this pans out, it's definitly NOT your run of the mill MMO (if you can even class it as one). |
|
|
NB: if you read the print at the bottom of the offer, you need a retail key and a vaild payment methord as well as the trail key (as some people have descovered), in essence you need to buy the game before you get your 'free' trial

Instancing - the good the bad and the misunderstood
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 10/31/06 1:02:59 PM
Sorry to just in mid-topic however although it's a terrible grindfest I think FFXI had the 'correct' balance with instancing:
Most of the instance based material was boss encounters tied into your mission lines, there was world bosses, but for the main storyline quest encounters that progressed YOUR character through plot (or in the case of summoner class given summon) were in fact instanced, the dugeon itself was completely open.. I think they hit on the money there, open content unless it's an boss encounter that progressed your character in a set way, thats how instances IMO 'should' be used |

Why most new MMORPGs have failed.
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 10/31/06 12:48:19 PM
Well personally I wouldn't say most have 'failed' more like 'stalled at the starting line'....
City of and Eve both came out with very little to offer to start with and fell into the bargin bin quite rapidly, but since then have built themselfs up into quite well know and popular games.. Auto Assult and DDO IMO fall into this slot too. I beta'ed DDO and the level of content was awful.. Most capped and explored the whole game then and then put it to dust, however since the content updates myself and a few freinds have picked the game back up to explore the new content, so the game isn't 'dead', it just have ppl dabbling in it from time to time, which is really what will keep it up. On the flip side offering loads of content can backfire, take WoW for example, it had offer loads of content, but a major chunk of that wasn't endgame so power players missed all that and ate through what was the endgame content at the time, leaving the devs rushing about trying to make extra conten for those players that missed everything else by powerleveling, to this day they havn't really recovered from that, and to stop the content from being used they 'bottle necked' progression to the extent 'only the 'L33T' may pass'.. So in retropect the 'failed' games ARE worth having a 2nd look at, and perhaps judging a game soloy on relase isn't the best way to go, cuz as it's proven, some 'lesser' games live the longest |

Mario worked well on the RPG area (both Snes and Paper serises) but sorry it wouldn't work MMO style, for starters the main plot of 'Mario saves the Priness from X' would have to be thrown out, and basically thats the key point, thru Mario lore (yes this is going THAT far) there are only 6 humans on record EVER in the mushroom kingdom, the MMO would have to use musroom people... techically thats not 'Mario'... On a side note a 'Yoshi' MMO could work, theres tons of him...
On the Nintendo product side I do see Pokemon turning MMO soewhere down the line, it's the next logical step now Nintendo are finally getting there feet wet online, also with the plot being enchanced by new hunters Metroid can actally go FPSMMO quite well imo, other then those two without drasically changing plots I don't think many can turn MMO |

For the mature gamer this game will certenly be, losts of blood, plently of things, lots more blood, disemboulment, lots of blood...
Anyways jokes aside, a question a never found answered from the huge lumps of info this game gives, whats death like in this game, both from a pvp and pve standpoint, is it to be feared or have funcom gone for the more 'profitable' trend wth fluffy rabbits etc? |

My characters are on agamaggan-eu, witch as many EU players know is known for it's nortorius laguage 'issues', and yes WoW has opened up a whole can of worms with all these new players to the MMO etecate (spelling awful i know) or these players that are just complete tards, luckly I found a guild with MMO vets and a community feel.. I do agree with you without a guild WoW can be hell and I do recommend to players that take up WoW to find a guild suited to them and no server will be a safe haven however find a guild and the community outside that will just be background noice |

tbh if they totally scrap their payment sytem and just went for it's orginal format of a free game with shop based items, it would have a soild payer base.. however as it's stands it's the battle of the wallet, whoever has the most cash wins.. witch is what they hope for but it wont last and players will tie of it quickly, they probly make a bit but not enought to make a huge profit, if it ever hits profit at all..
CM are just out for quick for a quick buck on the current MMO hype, and irronically every MMO they bring out puts more ppl off buying them |
|

100% agree on the review, fair and it's true.. WoW in it's current form is very limting to what it offers end game, basically it's limited by the current dev team tunnel version of liking raids probly due to the fact they probly played nothing but raid type games, so everything is based for 'the raid', everything else is purly a side issue..
TBC will make or break the game as it's dev team although it's streamlining the exp for casual use, they have at least take the PVP aspect as seriusly as the PVE looking at what TBC offers, i feel they are bringing back the orginal feel of the game and Blizzard's 'style' so to speak.. WoW is still a good game, however due to the volume of players and profit margins, it had lost it's way, hopfully TBC will put it back on track, if it doesn't let us hope any new MMO learns from WoW's mistakes and not follow this imo faliling form.. Theres no such thing as 'the perfect' MMO, but the first thing to sucess is a balance of game styles to suit all types of players.. Only a few months till TBC, will it save whats left? Lets see.. |

I don't think it will 'suck' in your terms, ALL MMOs get the forum
trolls, the item whores, the farmers, the hackers etc etc.. it's just
that poor WoW having built a somewhat crude bridge between massmultis
and single player worlds has had them 'on mass' so to speak, many have
gone off and opted of the 'free' games (such as GW) whereas others have
ditched the MMO world back to 'singleplayerdom'
WAR WILL have it's share of bad players but i dought they wont be as on mass as WoW has had them, certainly not past the beta stages.. WoW is a dumbed down version of every MMO that came before it, it did nothing new or wonderful. It broke open the MMORPG market because it was Warcraft not because it did anything new. It had its moments, in fact I still go back to it every once in a while as my "alt MMO" but it also broke a lot of promises over PvP and raiding. WoW has been very very bad for the older skool MMORPG players because now everyone making a MMO feels that the only way you can make a MMO is if you dumb it down, stick on a bad PvP system and make end game a massive raid grind. WoW is a great game, but if WAR is anything like it I won't be playing. Good job I don't think it will be! :) From the information given WAR will be a contrast to WOW and offer more in the PVP area although unlike WoW it hasn't shown much in the PVE area... yet.. Yes WoW is a very basic MMO with PVP tacked on sadly but as I've said in other topics WAR is hot on Blizzard's heels and is mustering up 'better' content in an effort to keep it's players base, this if works well will work in the player's favour as if WAR does become as good as it is on paper, both games will be trying to out do each other and hoppfully we will ethier have: 1) Two very good MMOs catering for all players or 2) one heck of a good MMO from the vitor of the two |
