Can someone on your staff who likes PvP please do a preview of this game?  I'd like to know more about the open-world PvP experience in Beta, especially since the developers have said so little about it.   Some commentary on the battlegrounds is okay, but we've already had press previews of the battlezone with the turrets, so a focus on open world PvP would be appreciated.

Please don't send someone from your staff who doesn't like to do PvP to do that part of the preview.   Thanks.

Open world PvP wasn't available within the level range we are able to provide coverage of at this time. Sorry :(

That's cool.    Thanks for the quick reply.   I just hope you can pass that message along so that we can get a sense of that aspect of the game when you can discuss it.  It's really the big missing info so far, which if you like to PvP is a big concern.

P.S.  The current preview above was fine, just want some info on the PvP side.

"Of course the majority of questions centered around story and choice which the team was more than happy to discuss. There are so many choices in the game and players will have a lot to look forward to, especially when the group dynamics come into play. Players will be able to roll for the response to NPCs on a quest and the group will follow. The choice falls on that player specifically and the team must go forward. This element to the game is quite tricky and they expect a lot of feedback from players."

Other than the lack of info on PvP, this has consistently been my biggest PvE concern.  If you are in a group doing a quest (that requires a group), you all select different responses but of course the game has to pick one and move on.  Well, what if the response is certainly not what you want to do? If the choice is a clear light-side/dark-side situation, and you're a light-side character and someone picks dark-side and the game selects that as the option to go with, you're forced to do a dark-side activity as a light-side player.  Sure, it doesn't impact your light-side character since you selected a light-side option, but you're still doing something you normally wouldn't do.

Just seems unfortunate.....It also seems that people will probably try to group with others who will only select certain options (super light-side groups or super dark-side groups).  This is going to be messy and probably eliminate any PUGs as a result.

"The open zone world PvP is the most anticipated topic right now and hopefully we will get more information as we get closer to launch"

We're only about 6-7 weeks away from launch depending on when early access starts. How can Bioware justify not being able to talk about basic gameplay like open world pvp yet? Are they going to tell us the night before release?  Seems really weird.

I get the impression they were aiming for a 2012 release, but for whatever reason now they're just scrambling to finish stuff and push it out the door by the end of the year.

Never a good sign that open world PvP is something they can't discuss with only a little over a month to launch.  I would suggest there is a 50% chance that it wont make it in the launch of the game.   For anyone who enjoys PvP over PvE, this is a title to be extremely wary of buying at launch.  I would wait at least 1 month before forking over cash to hear more about the PvP aspect of the game from people who are actually playing the game.

I wont buy the game until I know more about open world PvP.  There seems to be no way in the world to have any semblence of class balance in this game, which worries me.  The developers hardly talk about world PvP even though we're about to launch the game, which worries me.  The developers said their focus is PvE endgame content, which worries me.  The potential for NPCs to be in the world PvP worries me.

In short, the whole thing looks like it is being done all at the end as an afterthought.  No PvP game has ever done well when it was a complete afterthought.

"but without some real reason for them to hang out in the open at level 30, it won’t matter. "

Maybe that should have been in your original extremely positive review?

A re-review that skips the PvP portion of the game.  Terrific.

You've stated that this was the goal for the game since day one and that you never wanted it to be a subscription title. Why did it launch as one then, and what took so long for the change?

Lorin Jameson:

In today's world, business models are morphing and the key to evolving is to be flexible and deliver what players want. We've listened to our community and have determined that the free-to-play model is the best fit for DCUO moving forward. By adjusting the business model, we are expanding the DCUO experience and making the game more accessible to every type of player so they can choose to play the game in a way that suits them best.

so many words and he didnt answer the question..............

Every company plans for the day when the game goes F2P because eventually the game's playerbase shrinks to such a level that it is the easiest way to boost the population.   No company expects to announce F2P within six months of launching a $50 million game.  But alas, the game stunk (unless you read this site's incredibly favorable/biased review) and the players left in droves.

About a month after this game goes F2P, MMORPG will do a re-review of DCUO and reiterate all the wonderful aspects of the game, mention that it is better than it was a launch, and then proceed to give it a lower score than it did originally.  One wonders how the staff at this website keep a straight face when they write this stuff.

The problem with the trinity is that some players would prefer NOT to play a pure tank, a pure DPS, or a pure healer.   However, most high-end PvE encounters almost demand that you have at least a few pure tank/heal/dps players, and then you round it out with some hybrids.  Well, that sucks if you can't find the holy trinity players required to do the content.  Maybe you like that because it builds community, but I would say it tears it apart.   Why not have content that requires 5-10 players, but they can be whatever they want?   What's the difference?  Only because they come together for just the tough stuff but solo otherwise?  Maybe you think a game should require a group from the start?

I know this is a devil's advocate column, but to take your comment on how great it is because it builds community just seems illogical.  Is a community better because it is forced into grouping with players to do things, or is a community better because the choose to group when doing things?   Since MMO games are persistant, what about those who like Hybrid spec or play in off-peak hours where #'s of a specific class might not be available?  In other words, you'd force everyone into a trinity spec and force people to group from level 1 and force people to play only during peak hours to ensure enough of the "right class" are online.

Glad they went straight cooldown instead of managing energy.

Can't believe anything about a Funcom game until it goes live.

SWTOR developer said (on the video they posted recently) that the end game was primarily focused on running operations, which is PvE raiding.  I'm sure they showed off PvP, but not sure how that can be balanced between force using players and non-force using players.

obvious question is obvious:

whay do you mean by "succeeding"?

From a financial point of view, I've run some #'s using a 20% IRR requirement (using the estimated $100mm development cost spread over 5 years), a 35% tax rate and assuming they can retain 85% of the players who buy the box in year 1 and 70% of players a year after that, and that gross margins on revenues are 80% initially and move up to 95% rather quickly as player and development support dwindles over the years.  I estimate that the company needs to sell roughly 750,000 boxes and have 635,000 subs in year 1, sell about 10,000 more boxes in year 2 and 2000 more in year 3 in order to hit their hurdle rate of 20% return over the next 10 years.   Anything short of 700,000 box sales and 75% player retention, and this game will fail to deliver the required returns from a financial point of view.

I should mention that I worked on wall street and am very familiar with these financial calculations, I'm not some random dude spewing #'s out his butt.  Feel free to flame, but I assure you that my understanding of finance and accounting exceeds yours.

All that said, I think they'll probably sell more than 750,000 boxes (probably sell twice as many), but I have serious doubts about player retention assumptions given that this game is very story based.

I find it funny that NOT having a same-sex relationship is controversy.  WTF?  I'm offended that Christianity and Islam is not represented in SWTOR.  I'm offended that those with physical and mental disabilities can't become Jedi.  I'm offended that Darth Vader dressed in all black. I'm offended that the driods are sold into slavery in Star Wars.

Current recap of Funcom's "launch":

1) Timer breaks down and at 8:28pm (local time @ Funcom) they announce the timer is broken.

2) 1 hour later they announce they are still working on the problem

3) 3 hours after initial post, they announce they are making progress on the problem

4) 4 hours after initial post, they say they need 90 more minutes to fix it.

5) At 3:11 a.m (roughly 7 hours since the timer broke), they say it will be up and running by NOON (another 9 hours, or 16 hours since the original post)

6) At 1:11pm (1:11 after it was supposed to be working), they post that they are gathering information on the current status.

7) At 2:18pm they announce that they expect a delay of several more hours.

Now, if you know much about Funcom, you know the following:

A) They can't seem to launch a game smoothly; and

B) You can't believe what they say or show about a game pre-launch no matter how many times they promote a certain aspect of the game (Direct X 10 in AOC was on the cover of the box of the game and yet wasn't included for crying out loud).

All signs from this disaster beta signup fiasco point that nothing has changed at Funcom.  I wouldn't bother buying this game but perhaps wait a few months to see what really is in the game and if it is worthwile.

Hahaha, looks like some things never change at Failcom.

I actually thought this was a unique marketing idea because theoretically it has an end point. I don't know that I'll necessarily play, but kudos to Funcom for trying something different. However, in the end, it all comes down to how good TSW is ... maybe third time's the charm?

If Funcom wants to try something different, they should try to get the game ready at launch, unlike thier past games which were incomplete (at best) when the game went live.  It also would be nice if something they promise to be in the game actually makes it into the game this time.

I wouldn't buy this game at launch given Funcom's terrible history of overhyping their games.

If they plan closed beta before year-end, then I anticipate this game releasing May 2012.

The poster child for overpromise and under-deliver in MMO world had to be Age of Conan.  DX 10 (mentioned on the cover of the box in large print and almost every video game preview) wasn't included in the actual game.   Large scale PvP promoted in multiple demos at gaming conventions, was completely broke upon release (you could flood a zone with allies pre-seige and the defenders couldn't get in to defend, haha).  Starting zone was great, but the rest of the game was unfinished.  Their staff acted surprised that players were upset about the lack of PvP in the game, despite showing it off repeatedly in demos, videos, and interviews pre-launch.

Why anyone (including this website) would bother with previews, interviews or videos of Funcom's Secret World is beyond me, as Funcom will say anything (and even list features on the box that aren't in the game) just to hype.

Can you gain XP/levels while participating in these structured PvP events?  If so, I may never hit another mob ever again.
