You want to fix this game? Fix the player base, my experience with them was awful. Interupting is so important in this game and even when asked, the slacked jawed idiots I ended up in groups with would simply not even attempt to interupt.

I think it's perfectly reasonable that GIG have refunded Derek Smart's pledge. He is no more important than any other backer, and there's no reason why HIS whining should receive any more attention than anybody else's whining. Given his reputation he actually deserves less credibility in this case than the average backer, because it's highly likely that he's using this "cause" primarily as a way to generate publicity for himself.

Apparently, Derek Smart tried to make a similar game, but failed to pull it off. According to him, if HE couldn't do it, nobody else will be able to, therefore if CIG claim they can do it, they must obviously be scamming people. You see, his second name is not "Smart" for nothing, he is the greatest game designer that ever lived. Or will ever live. If he says it can't be done, you better believe it.

Of course, as is standard practice in these matters, all the "haters" will gleefully celebrate this as further "proof" that they are right, and that their concerns are valid. As for Derek, he doesn't give a damn either way, as long as he gets plenty of exposure and limelight in the process. He will milk it for all it's worth, then move on to the next "photo opportunity".

It seems that many posters here favour French law. If you can't prove you're innocent of their allegations (to their satisfaction), then you're obviously guilty on all charges.

It is always amusing to see people attack the messenger because they don't like the message.

Derek Smart asked some questions that a rational backer would want to know. This weird logic that asking 'hey, where's the beef? =  hater' just means you outed yourself as a 'fan boy'. ROFL!

The response from CIG is equally hilarious as they just 'took the ball and went home'.

I have not nor do I plan on donating to Star Citizen. Nor do I plan on playing the game after release. I have no interest in it. Having said that, I know exactly who Derek Smart is and that's the only reason why I'm interested in this topic.

First, Derek Smart is creating a competing product. Second, Derek Smart has no concept of a number of things: public relations, user experience, community management. He thinks that ANY criticism leveled at him or his games is trolling. He'll abuse the Steam tools for his game to silence 'real' criticism of his games.

The guy thrives on attention and drama, but when he finds himself in an argument with someone that points out when he's wrong he'll use any means necessary to silence that person. I've seen this numerous times and I've had first-hand experience.

I wouldn't be surprised if all this is him purposely trying to drum up attention for himself and his projects.

What does any of that have to do with the short list of 8 demands that the author has presented CIG with in a good faith effort to simply attain a bit of transparency and accountability for the tens of millions of dollars the public has entrusted with CIG?

This a short list of demands that not only a good majority of gamers are agreeing with, but the media is agreeing with it as well.  As a matter of fact, any rational and clear thinking person would and should agree with such demands simply because it is a smart business practice to demand accountability from someone that you have entrusted money with to complete a service or a product.  We are not asking for a finished product here.  We are just asking for a good faith showing of how that money has been allocated to date.

The fact that there would be people defending CIG in this matter, regardless of who brought forth these 8 demands in light of the fact that this company has been given $85 MILLION dollars with no accountability for that money, reinforces the saying that there is a sucker born every minute.  It's like you people have never heard the story of the boy that cried wolf.  Just because that boy was BSing about the warning and danger of an approaching wolf all the prior times he cried it did not mean that there was no wolf present that final time.  And if people would have listened to him that final time the results would not have been so tragic.  Apparently, the story is being repeated here except in this story the wolf is CIG and you, the white knights, won't stop criticizing the boy (DSmart) until the wolf jumps up and bites you in the ass.

You know the story of the boy who cried wolf is about teaching people not to falsely cry wolf right? It's not a tale of the tragic consequences of the people not listening to the boy, it's a tale of the boy getting himself killed because he's a little shit that likes to play games with serious issues.

Regardless of what console you like or whatever, it doesn't take a microscope to see the difference between 720p and 1080p. I was fairly certain this argument was only made by moms to their kids as they tried to dissuade them from wanting a new console. It doesn't deserve further discussion, the difference is obvious. I can also tell the difference between your 1080p and my 1440p. Resolution is hands down the most important factor to improving the look of a game.
You can't effectively run every control spell so who is better comes down to who can fit more control in while maintaining high output.
Pretty much everyone who has played knows what he is talking about. The early questing sucks and there are a lot of optimization issues.

First of all, I apologize for the provocative thread title and the username. They're for attention reasons only.

I'm doing a small academic research on MMORPG gamer behaviour. The research topic plays largely around the "sandbox vs themepark" subject (even though I personally do not like those terms, about some damn time for the genre to move on!).

Now, putting aside all the prevailing MMORPG market conditions (larger companies are too afraid to produce a big budget sandbox game since themepark is cashcow). What I nor my colleagues have not figured out is: why the "themepark" oriented crowd seem to proclaim every game in this genre to suit their needs? I.e. when publishers are talking about releasing sandbox/RvR/PvP-heavy games I can see tons of articles, forum posts and even people come to me in person saying "Hey, did you hear about this new game X? It sounds awesome, I just hope there isn't any open world PvP in it! I hope the PvP crowd would go play Darkfall/Mortal Online/Eve/Insert some low budget game here."

This brings me to question the typical themepark crowd's true motivations of gaming, are they just hopping from one game to another? There are so many options to choose from in the market for players who prefer themepark games. Why should Archeage/Everquest Next/Black Desert and so many others cater just their needs?

Please bear in mind, my research is 100% neutral and I have studied this solely based on my observations on themepark crowd behaviour (I can't see sandbox fans urging publishers to add open world PvP or other elements to pure themepark games such as WoW etc). I myself, I like a good game, no matter if it's called themepark or sandbox. :)

Also, please keep in mind: this is not a "sandbox vs themepark" discussion (even though my research subject largely is), but a direct question to themepark fans why every other game should be a themepark game too.

TL;DR: There are tons of themepark games for themepark fans to choose from. Why do they want every sandbox game to mold into a themepark too?

Your research isn't neutral if your thread post starts off by labeling people who like a certain game type with a derogatory term. That's point one, point two is you aren't doing research at all, you don't have 'colleagues" and no one comes up to you to say the things you claim they say. This is just pot stirring bullshit as per the usual pvp poster.

There simply seems to be a crazy amount of elitism and arguments for the sake of arguing on here.  Is it a group of people who enjoy mmo's or a group of people who enjoy reading their own words on a forum?

If this forum were a representation of all people who play games, games would have no players in them. This place is a hive of negativity because everyone who finds something they enjoy moves on to the official forums. You can't browse forums here and actually continue to enjoy the games you play because everyone is so negative about every game no matter the quality.

Yay! FInally a twitch fighting space sim. I have sooo been waiting to get ganked by 15 year olds with way better eye/hand coordination than me.

Oh, wait! Actually I have NOT been waiting for that.

A joystick and a space battle should have no common ground.  I like Chris Roberts, but did not bother to fund this.

Hey everybody look at the crotchety old man that doesn't understand videogames and the fact that we've been flying pretend space ships with joysticks since the beginning of gaming. Your opinion is wrong, which is impressive considering it's an opinion.

The reverse of this question was asked by the devs some 6 years ago, the answer was of course we should homogenize the classes, that's less work for us! "Bring the player not the class!" they proudly proclaimed, completely forgetting that players choose classes based on what they can do and how they are different from other classes. If choosing one is the same as choosing every other why choose at all? I just walked away.
These games are supposed to be worlds, that's why we need houses.
I'd love to get a head start on deciding what class I want to play, and I'm not a pretend account like the other 160 pages of smurfs. That's a pretty good reason right there.

This game will not only survive launch but will be the next WoW of the decade,  not that it will steal WoW's player base, but bring in the single players into MMO by the millions.

Also if they run an advertisement campaign world wide like WoW did with celebs and major brands, it should easily hit 10 million subs in the first year.

Only thing that will slow its growth is XBOX Live, requiring both LIVE and a game sub.   I think after xbox players see the greed of Microsoft they'll make the right choice and sell their XBOX and go with PS4 or PC since sony is allowing this game to be a stand alone sub and as far as PC goes,  there nothing more then internet required.

If your afraid of running out of content, I think there is enough here for atleast 3 months from launch.   They will be doing updates every 4-6 weeks,  but they also have Crafting as the best gear makers in game,  this is something that if content runs dry, will keep this game going np.   If they added enough solo things to do while waiting to raid ect.  I think they should also be fine if content does run out.   I think we'll have to see just how fast they can crank out content and time sinks for players after 3 months.

If they really want to keep players occupied during dry content runs, I suggest Solo Skirmish Systems like LOTRO,  Solo/Group end game progression and Housing with lots of funishings that crafters can spend hours on, with dungeon throphy drops people love to try to get ect.   More things to keep us busy the better.

You sir, are high as a kite. Pass the bud.

I am 1000% certain that any uptick in 'recognition" that Cobain got when he died is because he killed himself. People already liked the music before he died. SWG was tried by many and played by not as many. The devs absolutely killed it with the major changes but there was a reason the amount of people who played swg played swg and it wasn't because people didn't know about it, it was because the large group of gamers in this genre don't play those games. It had a healthy niche and its devs killed that niche off.

I admit i love free2play.I avoid or quickly uninstall the bad ones but invest lots of time in good ones that i enjoy.I have never spent anything in a f2p and probably never will,i just want to get the maximum amount of enjoyment for the least amount of money i don't care about the developers or publishers there are enough whales out there to fund them. All you need to do is avoid bad f2p games and keep playing the good ones so that soon enough the industry will realize that fair implementation of f2p is vital to retaining playerbase.

If everyone was like you we wouldn't have a games industry.

F2P needs to go away and the faster the better.

What do you mean by that ? How is me not paying for f2p games and enjoying them for free killing the games industry?99% of people do not spend any cash in a f2p game so are all those people also responsible for killing the games industry?

He is saying if no one payed for the games we wouldn't have them, in other words, if everyone was you, there would be no games.

Free to play is awesome!!! I love not paying for my games!!!

few years later...

Why do all these games suck? I can't possibly figure it out?

The RVR will tell the difference, if some people manage to be quite successful with certain builds, FOTM and min-maxing will be in vogue, and the elitism that goes with it.

And if this doesn't happen then playing well will be in vogue and the elitism that goes with it. Don't want that attitude don't compete, at anything.

*not aimed directly at kyle.

If you don't like a guild that supports playing at maximum potential don't join such a guild, but don't cry either when you don't see the results that they do. Have your fun in the way you want to have it and don't worry about what other people are doing but don't ruin other peoples fun because your fun builds don't allow for all content to be cleared. If a game isn't difficult it isn't fun.
When did microtransactions EVER have appeal? Since going this route the quality of games has gotten worse. The F2P peasants were wrong when this whole shit storm of bad games started and they continue to be wrong. Your F2P game sucks and you should feel bad for driving the industry in this direction.

Put me down for having played it and not liking it at all because it is poorly done.
