What did I say wasn't factual? The title I used was a joke. It's purpose was to attract attention by parodying all the other "this game will kill WoW" threads, and to mock all those games people believed would come close to WoW's numbers, when in reality WoW's closest competition (aside from the stagnate lineage series) is a game that doesn't even have an official messageboard on this website for MMORPGs.

Aside from that nothing I mentioned was wrong. Their messageboard is atrocious and they've grown a lot since 2000. They deserve some respect regardless of our opinion's of their community, graphics, game mechanics or time sinks.

This whole concept of browser games makes me a bit sick.

LOL. A game is a game regardless of the medium needed to play it. One of the greatest games I played throughout my childhood was a TNMT game that was sold in a handheld machine designed to only play that one game. The game itself had no world to speak of with graphics worse than a gameboy. You just had to fight off swarms of enemies from four directions, but it was more challenging and more fun than Kirby's Dreamland for the gameboy which I defeated in 4 hours. That TMNT turtle game lasted for almost 6 months.

Here's a great fps browser game with multiplayer hosting capabilities you should be able to enjoy. I don't know about firefox but it doesn't work on Opera so I have to use IE to play it.

Very true. Nothing else needs to be added to something so insightful with the fewest amount of words possilbe. Even doubling their staff would go a long way to improving CS and more importantly updates.

Congrats to Jagex from going from 100k subscribers and 1.2 million accounts (from the last time I checked on their growth) to 1 million subscribers and 9 million accounts.

Subscribers == those who pay $5

accounts == subscribers + free to play.

You deserve that recogniton. Now use that money to get better forums.

You missed the memo that nex-gen is a buzzword applied to anything related to videogaming not just consoles.

Blizzard started work on WoW in what, 2000? They released in 2004 and they started hiring staffers for mmo related work at the beginning of this year. If this new staff is for a new mmo and not to help with the creation of a better expansion for WoW (since they declared they want to make a new expansion every year) then we shouldn't expect a new MMO from Blizzard no sooner than 2010. Three years is doable for smaller mmos but there's no chance Blizzard is going to make a game smaller than WoW when it launched so the wait time will be longer.

I read something about a Frogster doing the publishing. Maybe that was for EU only though... Anyone know?

Frogster handles Germany a couple of other EU countries and Korea.

They have different publisher for Italy and the UK IIRC.

MMORPG.com's Game/On staff is supposed to be doing weekly podcasts on TCOS for awhile.

They did one podcast last Friday.

The only thing you can do is keep on asking for voice to text programs to be integrated in future mmos.

A decent number of people who frequent the official darkfall forums are playing VanguardSoh because it is the only new game offering FFAPVP and most of them enjoy it for what it's worth.

Since you are interested in AoC you should go into their forums and ask if people are playing in FFAPVP mmos so you can have the opportunity of meeting them in game.

The language isn't entirely gibberish. Blizzard takes dsciplinary actions against players who know how to speak in the other languages especially if they built translation programs.

Still the amount of players who are dedicated to do that is miniscule.

So a more plausible scenario is a second account. This guy not only admitted to giving out his address but also stated he was determined to harrass her. In other pvp games players could get temp bans or an excessive notoriety for ganking frequently so they always had an additional account so they can resume their activities like the cockaroaches they are.

THe article isn't detailed enough in explaining how determined he was in getting to her so what I'm saying is still speculation but if lamers like him existed almost 10 years ago I don't find it hard to believe it now.

The best part about this article is that they took the time to damage his hand and arms along with destroying their computer.

Just click on the picutures and the translation is there.

I'm liking their approach so far in trying to get people interested in the background world of Tabula Rasa.

It matters because Mythic said there would be dependency among the classes. I didn't even know they had the same philosophy since DAOC but it is becoming more obvious their track record from that game is relevant in expectations for this game. How relevant remains to be seen but I have less doubt that it will be insignificant.

Because you're not involved in these choices of firing and twisting and turning as you would like in a game like Galaxies or any other half decent space game.[/quote]

You're assessment was right except for this one. You won't last against npcs or be able to kill them if they can't kill you by leaving your ship alone after making it autoattack on the first target.

In eve a player has to manage his energy cells because offense and defense abilities will drain it if they exceed the regeneration rate. In eve a player has to calculate in their heads the distances and speed needed to fight with the weapons and ammunition type they have because weapons are affected by range and movement rate unlike any other autoattacking mmorpg. As you progress in Eve you have to start thinking about gang benefits and ecm effects. The game is more interactive combatwise than you claim but the reflexes needed in most pve battles in other games aren't required in Eve. This is partly a good thing because the amount of thinking you need to do in an tough fight is higher than other games. The bad thing is that most pve fights aren't tough; you have to pvp to find consistently challenging experiences.

Originally posted by Shalud  Blizzard's attempt to balance WoW is based on 1v1.

I won't argue over the reality of the game but I have to point out this is wrong in terms of defining Blizzard's own ideals.

A CM directly stated that classes are balanced for group play in regards to both raiding and pvp. Classes are supposed to rely on each other to make up for deficiencies. This makes sense if you go back around a year and a half before that declaration another CM stated classes were designed so that a class with certain attributes has the most counters for those attributes. For instance, Rogues, warriors and hunters are physical classes and as a result should have the most means of dealing with physical attacks. Rogues and warriors primarily are melee; while hunters are a range melee hybrid with a greater emphasis on range. This results in rogues and warriors having a greater proportion of anti melee tools while hunters in their unique role have tools against both. If the best counters for a class lay in the hands of the class itself it's pretty clear that Blizzard has always wanted classes to be dependent on each other.

Ofcourse class balance is mostly subjective, that's why I asked for the summary. The rating itself is useless without the summaries to help figure out a person's ability to percieve class balance.

One thing that keeps coming up in discussions on the official WoW forums but is barely clarified is that Mythic doesn't know how to balance classes and this will be a huge blow to War.

Mythic doesn't have an official board and wow general isn't the place for that type of discussion so I'm posing this question here.

If you played both DAOC and WoW, how would you rate each company's first mmo at balancing classes for pvp? In addition, try to put in atleast three sentences that summarizes your feelings on each game's attempt at balance seperately, while the last sentence summarizes why you rate one game higher than the other or equal.

Lastly try not to bring up realm balance issues in this discussion. I've seen this come up too many times sidetracking topics.

Some 5 man gear already matches raid gear. Not much but it exists. Blizzard has said certain mistakes were made in that regard so we'll see later on how that pans out. Regardless pvp rewards are comparable to raiding rewards which was what the more vocal players were demanding for to begin with.

As for gear matching they mentioned it three times in their forums. After trying to find the last post they made on this I can see why you would have trouble seeing information like this easily. Geeze the wow forums have issues.

To the OP, could you list the type of single player games you commonly like? Do you prefer the slower methodical gameplay that comes with rpgs and turnbased strategy games or the faster more reactive gameplay of fps, fighting and adventure games?

If you prefer slower gameplay then to a degree "World of Warcraft" and "LoTR Online" are acceptable. They can be played slowly since they sort of follow rpg mechanics but in reality they are far more reactive in general if you try to maximize your game play.

If you prefer faster games period then look into "Gods and Heroes" or "The Chronicles of Spellborn". Gods and Heros is a squad based game and if you played games like Mechcommander or Star Wars Republic Commandos you'll know how engrossing managing multiple units can be. Spellborn itself is an fps game with a sword and sorcery bent.

Are you a graphics whore and if so what are you system specs?

If you love graphics TCoS is the best followed by LOTRO, GnH and dead last WoW.

But from my observations LOTRO is dead last when you consider other things that enhance graphics such as sound and animations. The atmospheric effects in WoW are pretty cool while I find LOTRO to be quaint but fitting with the backgroun material. The animations in Gods and Heros simply blows away all the other games but TCoS offsets that with better special effects and better sound (which you can sample). WoW is an older game so by default it has weaker graphics but the art direction is very nice. You said you like bright colors and WoW and Gods and Heros fits this requirement the best.

Maybe wow is on a decline or not but you have no proof. Only two months ago I thought wow would actually start losing subscribers after tbc has been played for a couple of months and I never thought before the expansion came out it would grow beyond its 8 million mark in any significant way. They proved me wrong when they announced reaching 8.5 million active accounts and it might prove us wrong with tbc.

FYI LOTRO aquired its noobfriendly reputation because of stres test beta. Mobs at that time were very easy. They cranked up the difficulty by a lot. It's no more different than wow interms

[edit]

The disparity hasn't been fixed.  The only way it can be fixed is if they do gear matching in the BGs.  Since they haven't implemented this there is still a great disparity in the gear and gear is king in PVP in WoW.

The disparity has been fixed. Gear matching is being implemented because of twinks steamrolling players who are new to a server or the game and only for that reason.

Hmm, I don't see that MMO on this site, I must be blind.

You aren't, the game's name to cater to Western tastes is Sword of the New World. Still Sword of the New World doesn't count because it is planned to release in June which is Q3.

I can't vote without knowing what potbs offers and that skimpy summary doesn't help because I can see things being left out in th other summarries.

As it stands GnH will be the most promising at launch because it will be squad based combat with your main character as a true leader and hero among the group. It's setting appeals to the kid in me the most since I used to soak up greek mythology like a sponge. The animations are simply amazing.

But as time progresses if they implement all the things they planned (more importantly House vs House shard conquests and reputation system) then TCoS will crush a lot of games to come as well as existing games.
As mentioned in a gamasutra article the game mechnanics in mmos can be very boring. Moving away from point and click auto attack combat to fps style combat will make the game more interactive. Allowng players to change the world as individuals, guilds and houses makes the world feel more alive than the modern mos which have ignored the precedence of eariler mmos and muds where the world ca be changed. Creating different objectives for the same quest area based on the house you belong to will put players into the position of choosing which objectives are more important the agenda of their house or the agenda of their friends outside of the house.

Dude, quit being a TOOL. I guess you play the games published by SOE. Or you just wanting to be a asshole? If its the latter, there are better posts than this one to show your true colors to.!

 Enjoy...

I'm the type of person who likes accurate knowledge you didn't provide it in your first post and citing a wikipedia usually isn't good enough if it doesn't have references. I actually took the time to check Sigil's website and surprisingly enough unlike most companies they post short bios for everyone working in that company. If they hadn't done that you would've had no verifiable proof.

You didn't prove your point citing that thread. Two guys as former sony devs? Big deal. If you can actually list off almost a third of the development staff being hired by Sony to work an mmo from the beginning then you would have a point. Your anecdotal evidence is lacking.

All those "alternate" forms of PvP (competing for resources, getting the best gear) are just as annoying and/or uninteresting to a non-PvP player as PvP combat is.  Sometimes more so.

You're human and whether you like it or not you are both a competitive and cooperative creature by default. You may end up with your preferences which is part of the reason why I mentioned all mmos shouldn't include pvp aspects. I fully acknowledge people have different tastes and better exploration of our nature can be had from being able to play games that mix both competititve and cooperative play and games that solely cater to only one aspect.

Ohaan - I might be wrong here myself because I'm making the assumption that while you acknowledged Inf666's broader definition of player versus player it seems when you addressed the question directly you were doing it in the context of the narrow definition. If my assumption was wrong I apologize if my assumption is correct that's where your error came from.
