This game could be a turning point for all MMOs out there.
Rome (General) « Gods and Heroes 10/17/06 3:10:55 PM
I certainly hope so, I defnitely need something to 'balance' my subscription to CoX. If it can live up to the hype, I will get to enjoy great combat AND finally some depth.

i.e. CoX has even less high-end content than WoW. . . .at least until Inventions. Hmm, going back to the lower level content is considered HIGH-end content.....nope, just doesn't jive. Doing Hami raids and LRSF is somehow better? At least WoW has multiple "Hame/LRSF" raids. The only thing I see that CoX over WoW is a costume contest but contests are player run and I don't see that any MMO has a monopoly on that. Totally Exploring Hazard Zones? What does that mean? WoW has so many more zones and interesting places to explore than CoX, except traveling them sucks big time. Badge Hunting<Loot Hunting. My love for super-heroes has kept me playing long and through multiple 50s. It certainly wasn't the "variety" of the content. I also agree its very repetitive. At least in WoW, I can do crafting though repetitive in itself, it still provides something other than repetitive missions and combat. |

No need to wait for this game to get these powers(which I seriously doubt they would add them). You will find many wrestling moves in Gods & Heroes by the end of this year.

I want ED to go away or the supposed ED content to show up in Issue 8. Also, the next time there is a massive change so they can create content, I would like to see that content the very next issue, not over a year later and waiting. |

Did you look at the title of the thread? Non-Combat playing. i.e. you are not in combat to defeat things. Crafting is a great example. Its more of a time committment than anything. The best action movies are NOT action from the beginning minute to the last minute. They have peaks and valleys. If they didn't give you some downtime then the combat won't be as exciting because you have nothing to compare it too. If you can't understand the movie analogy, then I can't help you. (and I really don't understand the talking your way into experience. Explain?) Regardless, who said it was going to REPLACE combat, it SUPPLEMENTS the gameplay. All good games try to 'flesh' out the gameplay. Go read some reviews and see how the article appreciates 'small touches' to the game. |

Perhaps one of THE easiest questions to answer.
Your timing is good. Essentially either game can be found from 20-40 dollars but they have just released what is called the Good vs Evil editon. It is a Wal-mart special and is $30. It includes the most up to date issue, saving you much download time. This price includes one month of play, not to mention BOTH games cost only $14.99 after your intial month. Unfortunately, it was supposed to be in stores today but appears is only available for order online. I've only seen one person that mentioned a Wal-Mart employee says they will have the actual box in store around Oct 9th.
(Oh, and you get a nice mini-travel power that can only be obtained from this version). Have fun. |

I enjoy the PvP more in WoW, but maybe its mostly the lag that kills it for me. 10 other players or more in WoW, no problem. 10 or more players in CoX and I jump down to single digit framerates.
for me personally, I do not find the stories engaging enough because you don't really see the results of your work. Some people mention they love the rich backstory. To that I have to say this is a VIDEO game. I need to see that story unfolding visually or I might as well just read a book. When you take the George RR Martin books and talk about a rich background, then CoX pales in comparison. The small change to KR and the supposed revamping of Faultline to a city zone instead of hazard is more of what I am lookiing for. When you save soldiers/citizens/PPD, as an example, it would be nice to gain points with them to say either call in a raid or use their teleportation system. That is more representative of your actions than any backstory. Action speaks louder than words.
But if you love superheroes, yeah its worth it. |

While it may not be the Veteran's Reward exactly, I think it just a piece of the pie that will be Marvel Universe Online. I can't believe some of the long-time supporters on the official boards are actually questioning the health/longevity of the game so I am now worried. ED, lack of features that were asked for a long while ago(e.g. trenchcoats), reversing the retail expansion, new mantra 'give players what they want' (possilbly trying to replace the tired 'working as intended'), etc., if looked at from one perspective could be to keep Cryptic funded while working on the Marvel game(though I'm sure they got a nice wad of cash from Marvel for dev). Again, viewed from a certain perspective the length between Issues could be explained by this news. Time will tell but people will may need to ask themselves whether they want to invest months into a game that may go nowhere.....this comment is just based on the fact that the last few updates to the game have been few and far between; also IMO the gameplay has remained static with nothing truly new(except Mayhem Missions and I don't count PvP which can be found in better form in other games). While new zones and new mobs are nice, they have added little depth to the gameplay and just add to already sufficient eye-candy. |

I used to think that same way but after reading an article on PC elitism and watching couple friends play(one I even bought as a present...oops), I had realized how much I took for granted. Things I thought were the most basic tactics they could not grasp. One friend actually could not take on 3 foes until level 7 and basically stood like a log trading blows on a Controller. Luckily I was a huge comic book fan, even though I didn't get my first 50 until about 6-8 months into the game. Nope, I disagree. If you want to make the game reach a larger audience, it still needs work. |

Agree with Tinybina. Cryptic is still relatively new to the game and they are hiring totally new people for their new projects. While it sounds good to hire someone based on great ideas but with no experience producing an MMO, its too easy to get mired in technicalities, workflows, etc. Cryptic did a good job on CoX but are going to need to do a great job on the Marvel MMO. If their current support of CoX is any indication(lag, framerate issues, constant balancing without adding real content beyone new zones/villains, failed PvP, etc) then I highly doubt I will be playing the game on release day. Its going to be interesting to see how it fares in the niche superhero genre. Who knows, maybe we will get lucky and most of things people disliked and/or left because of will be addressed in the Marvel MMO. Seems kind of crappy for CoX then if it really takes off because all the mistakes were made there. |

Though I haven't agreed with the game's direction for the last few updates, I still hold out hope for a return to the level of fun I had in the first year. Since Jack rarely talks on the boards anymore, its nice to hear him say he is excited about one of the next Issues. Can't wait for the Legends system.

unhappy with FPS in CoV, was just ok in CoH

Well, you said earlier you have problems with EQ, WoW, etc. Maybe I can suggest some tweaks to you because I have no problems with those games.
.
CoX is the only game I have framerate issues. Read the Anandtech article since your repsonse suggest you didn't. Even with the most high-end system, they still fall below the 30fps threshold in some situations. As they said, its CPU limited which explains why my upgrade did little to increase framerates. But that upgrade sure worked wonders for all the other games I played. You have nothing to offer that I have not read or tried before. |

Everytime I hear of ED and the 'extra space' or 'room at the top' we may be possibly using in I8 and beyond, I can't help but think of a sale at a retail store but they increased the normal everyday prices before giving you 1/2 off.

Yep, I agree Damian. For the health of the game they need to keep it fresh for their current playerbase since there will be many new MMOs soon that look enticing.

On another note, Posi posted they are working on many bug fixes and admitted it pushed back his original estimation of a September release(would Statesman ever do such a thing?). Can't say I'm not disappointed but I love when Posi basically tells it straight. I would say he tells it straight because generally the things he posts are not all roses and perfume laden. Again, disappointed but definitely understand and look forward to the memory leak and teleport fix. |

Link above is to an Anandtech article on the changes to Physx performance since it was introduced. What I found really interesting was Anandtech's comment on how the game is CPU limited(that would explain the small jump in FPS when going from Athlon xp 2500 to Athlon 64 3200) and you would see just as much performance boost moving to a dual-core CPU. When it comes to price, it looks like a dual-core upgrade will be a better value than getting a PPU(around $250 for Ageia and about $235 for an Athlon dual-core 4400).

It is disappointing that your GPU does not matter that much in a video game. |

Oh, you are right. I re-read my post and see that I must have been off my meds. Did anyone get hurt? I really need to be careful with that wording where I'm just frothing at the mouth so much that always seems to catch someone's attention and garner a "chill out or calm down" response.
I apologize to all those so sensitive to this game that my post was so offensive. On the other hand, I7 took 7 months and that didn't save it from bugs now did it? Some prefer for them to just release it and deal with bugs as they crop up(read the official forums) and I happen to agree with that point. Big deal indeed. |

So far Guardian isn't bad but I was definitely not inundated with requests for teaming. Actually only one invite so far(and they sucked, sewer team and the leader left after about 6 mobs, said Oops and logged out).
I know KR is updated but they need to pick up the pace and create a little more interaction with the environment. Sometimes I look at the zones and see so much possibility but that's it, its just been possiblities. |
|
I wish I had that problem. Guardian is usually pretty dead for me whenever I log in(mostly around 5pm-10pm Calif time) , no matter the time of day. So you aren't broadcasting or even have your LFT flag up yet get tons of invites? Whatever you are doing, let me know because the only servers I get invites on a fairly consistent basis are Freedom then Virtue. Even then, its not on a 24/7 basis. I am playing around level 10-15 with my toons on that server. Does this amount of invites happen at a higher level or is it an AT thing(I have a lvl 14 Dark/Dark scrapper and lvl 4 controller I play now)? about 4:30pm now and playing my controller about 5:15 and they still are not done with costume contest. I'm sure that's not helping my invite situation atm.(oh and got a blind SG invite which I declined. If you are too lazy to try and sell me on why I should join your SG, it can't be very good.) 6:07pm still no invites. thinking of switching to my scrapper instead. 6:15 got a team for my troller, woot. almost gave up hope. |
