If they were giving like a 20 slot bag, now that would be a different story.

So, while I may not really be playing the game (DDO hasn't been down for maintenance during my play time since NW "launched"), how is something free "not worth getting"? I may get it just to have the stuff on my characters for the occasions I do play...

DDO has a bit of that .. but from the little i have played, there isn't as much story as in STO.

A lot of DDO's stories span multiple quest chains that are done at different levels. To give an example - Water Works(level 3-5) ties into Shan To Kor(levels 5-7), and concludes in Ruins of Threnal(levels 9-11).

Another example would be the Devil Invasion story line (which was immensely more impressive when the original Marketplace was destroyed in the live event). You start off with Devil Invasion (Marketplace Barracks, level 6ish) and go into Chronoscope(levels 6-8). From there, you go on to Meridia(levels 12-17) and conclude(?) with Amrath(levels 17-20).

These story lines tend to be long winded and are easily missed by those that are impatient or dislike dialogue beyond what you have to do.

Now, I didn't need a case, PSU, optical drive, vid card or HDD when I did my latest update. But, that said, I went as follows -

The New buys-
AMD FX-8350
ASUS Sabretooth R2
Corsair Vengeance 16 gig DDR 3

Already had-
Radeon HD 6970
ThermalTake 750 watt Modular PSU
LG SuperMulti Drive
Western Digital 1 TB Black
Custom case with four fans (2x80mm and 2x120mm)

Still want an SSD, an upgrade to a Blu-Ray MultiDrive, and another 16 gig of RAM.

You could get the vid card equivalent in an HD 7950

Victor, your article was well written and recieved. I come from the school of earning ones respect, not blind respect. I've never been the guy to poke fun at disabled children or people who couldn't defend themselves. I was the guy defending them. The internet is a very different place where people in the position of development are expected to be flamed, trolled, lied about and the like while simply bowing and saying thank you, otherwise, they are branded as bad business men, arrogant and any other derogatory title. I simply don't agree with this and I can't pretend to for the sake of my "reputation". The fact remains, I'm honest, very hard working and we are making great leaps of progress on Greed Monger and that progress alone should be what the public uses to establish their opinions on Greed Monger, not how I personally handle an endless list of tirades, slander, defamation and insults all of which are baseless and unfounded that honestly shouldn't be so freely allowed on anywebsite targeting anyone, let alone me.

I appreciate your letter and I'm sure you are very accurate in how things are in the anonymous mosh pit of mmorpg discussion forums, however, that doesnt mean I or anyone should just accept it for what it is and deal with it. It needs to change. I've always said, those who point the finger the most are often the ones with the most to side. It's just how it is in the real world.

Thank you for your letter.

Mr. Appleton, I don't know you or your game.  Nor do I care about either of you, one way or the other.  If you come from the world of MMA, then you should consider MMO forums like the trashtalking, pre-fight banter between two fighters.  It's going to get heated.  It's going to get personal.  At the end of the day, it's put up or shut up.  If you're a fighter, you don't threaten a lawsuit against the other fighter for talking smack.  You shut them up in the ring/octogon/cage.  You prove them wrong.  And that's exactly what you have to do, or try to do, with your game.  The game is your fists in this fight.  How well it turns out will be the determining factor here.  Not threatening lawsuits.  To the many keyboard commandos of the forum world, threatening to sue is just ammunition.  To them, it's justification for their criticisms and attacks.  To them, it says "I can't back up my claims with results, so I'm going to use the courts to shut them up."  And quite frankly, you lack the financial resources to go after every person that will say negative things about you on the internet.

Here is the link to the LoTROMarketLoTROMarket. You can get the first three expansions in one go for $40, but the newest one is going to be $40 by its self, seeing it's only a few months old.

*edit - You can also download the game and check the in game Turbine Point store to see if there are any deals there. Sometimes you can get a better deal by buying a bundle of Turbine Points and buying the content that way. Here is the current in-game store prices (paid for with Turbine Points) LoTRoStore

*So many edits - All four expansions (even though you already have Moria) run 5180 Turbine points. That means you can theoretically guy the $99.99 Turbine point bundle in the LoTROStore (6,250 TP + 4,750 bonus TP = 11,000 total TP) and have enough points to buy all four expansions for two accounts and still have a couple of hundred TP left over. You'll have to ask on the LoTRO forums if you can gift the packs to your second account.

There is one thing I think a lot of us are overlooking. For many of the projects here, especially the really in ambitious ones, Kickstarter is not meant to be a sole source of funding. In many cases, the crowdfunding that they get from KS is used to prove to a larger developer/publisher that there is a genuine interest in the project. Enough so that future players are willing to foot some of the start up capitol to get the games development moving.

But wouldn't that time get cut down seeing that a lot of those investor set deadlines would not be hindering nor pressuring the development team?

So, not being pressured is going to produce faster results? I do admit, the majority of projects on KS I'm skeptical about. The only ones that I believe have a chance are Pathfinder Online and the Obsidian project. The rest, I feel, are going to come up short. I see a lot of these ideas and say, "gee, I think there is a real reason this didn't get picked up by a major developer/publisher in the first place." There are always going to be exceptions though. FTL comes to mind right off. And some of the projects over on Steam Greenlight seem to have potential as well.

"You get what you pay for!" Seems appropriate here. Before my latest upgrade, it was five years between major rebuilds. Until about a month ago, I had as follows

Intel Core2Quad Q8200 @ 2.9gHz
four gigs of OCZ ultra low latency (for the time anyhow)RAM
MSi P5M motherboard.
EVGA Nvidia GTX 260 1gb video card

all in all with this build, I spent maybe $600

Other than swapping out to a HD 6970 about two years ago (because I wanted to, not needed to), this set up lasted me five, almost six years. And probably would have lasted me even longer, but I had the opportunity to get some good parts at a good price and jumped on it. But, with the changes in prices, especially how DDR 3 has came down in price compared to older DDR versions, my new build is considerably more powerful and still considered a budget build

FX-8350 8 core @ 3.9gHz
Asus Sabretooth R2 FX990 mobo
16 gigs of Corsair Vengeance RAM
and still using the HD 6970

total investment - $446 (still have the receipt)

Granted, I didn't need to upgrade power supply (Thermaltake Mod 750 watt), case (custom built), or accessories (dvd, floppy, digital control panel).

Kotaku article says it all really. Disney has shuttered Lucas Arts games division. So, I guess anyone with hopes for a new SW MMO is SOL...

Originally posted by Siveria Games using this kind of system is where the term "pay 2 win" came from. if you can buy gear from a cash shop that is not cosmetic or has very small stat boosts (say for wardrobe) the game is pay2win because they will slowly setup the game so that your forced to buy this stuff if u wanna get anywhere. Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine is a prime example, hardly anyone uses ingame dropped equiupment, or crafted stuff, its all cash shop stuff because quit frankly the cash shop gear blows away anything obtainable in the game. Pay2win mmo's are not setup to keep players for long, they are setup to suck players in then suck as much money out of them as possible before they move on. I really wanna know just how stupid people are to fall for this, especally when so many of these p2w mmo's are pretty high up there on the shit-tier gameplay wise. Then again this generation of gamers tend to be stupid anyway, when they think games today are great when they are horribly dumbed down compared to last generations game, even most recently bioshock infinite compared to bioshock 1 and 2, bioshock infinite took a pretty large step BACKWARDS in terms of gameplay. But since people are stupid enough to buy this garbage, they don't stop making them, they just keep dumbing them down more and more. In the future I bet all games are going to only need 1 button if they continue as they have been going.
The gear comes from other players. It's players selling their gear for tokens bought with real money. LotRO players see the writing on the wall. It would probably be better if the items just existed in the cash shop, but this is worse.

Not much of what you said even applies here. These aren't churn based f2p games. These are niche Freemium games. Both DDO and LotRO mainly consist of long time dedicated players. Turbine is trying to generate additional revenue. A huge problem in this particular situation is that it will dramatically advantage a small portion of the playerbase at the expense of the rest.

How will it create an advantage? The items being sold are being sold by the players. There is no gear that is available only through the ASAH. The players who buy are either unlucky or lazy. It's a PvE focused game. What PvP there is, is completely voluntary and without any meaning. Any item on the ASAH can be earned, in quest, with either enough time or luck. The only way it provides an advantage is if you are a "Keeping up with the Jones" type player.

From what I've played, it's not worth the full retail box. Maybe when it drops in price or goes F2P on the PS3. As Severius said, it just didn't grab me.

Well, as far as I can tell, top tier gear in most games is locked behind some quest mechanic, usually raiding. As for first life gear disappearing from the regular AH, the really good gear has been gone for quite a while. It was either traded in private channels or done so in the quests that they drop. With the ADAH, this becomes a situation where the true, top end raid gear becomes trade capable. Before now, the majority of top end gear was bound to account or bound to character.

And as to the raiding mechanic being a barrier, I find that hard to believe. DDO is not like WoW where you need to gather 24+ people and then fight with them once the boss fight is over in hopes of reaching the drop first. In DDO, a raid is only 12 people and they all have their loot drops sorted out individually. There is also no one piece of gear that any class HAS to have. While there is plenty of desired gear, not having something will not bar a player from progressing.

You know the really great thing about the AD system in DDO?  You can completely ignore it.  That's what I've been doing.  Maybe buying Raid gear would piss me off more if there were a PvP system and it gave any meaningful advantage.  As I see it, the "gotta have it now" crowd will buy all the desirable gear from the raid whores and then leave the game since there will be nothing for them to do.  I look at that as a Win/Win.  It adds money to the game and gets the lazy assholes out of the game at the same time.

You obviously never played 4e....where multiclassing just meant wasting a feat.

You're right. Flipped through the DM's Guide when it first hit market. Realized it was shit and proceeded to pick up more 3.5 modules.

So, there is no multi-classing? Hard to call it D&D with no multi-classing

Neverwinter will most likely be a "when the servers are down" game for me. Diehard DDO fan, and even with all it's problems, still feels more like D&D, to me, than Neverwinter does.

Vox_mortis Well, it's actually several things, all of which I think you folks will enjoy.  Either way, I'm excited to bring it to you, so I hope you enjoy it, at any rate.

That's going to be a hard sell right there. There hasn't been much in the way of their thinking that I've really enjoyed....

In the Harbor, there isn't much to do but run quests. But, you are not locked to the Harbor until completion. You can go to any of the house quarters to see what there is to do. Mind you, the game's primary focus is questing. There is only one time sink in the game, crafting. Now, there are a few different options for crafting, but it boils down to looking at a different menu as opposed to different mechanics. There is a trap crafting station in the Harbor near Hazadil's Warehouse and in House Cannith near the crafting vendor. There is a crafting house in House Kundarak near the entrance to the Market and in House Cannith near the Cannith Manufactury.

Graphically, I have to say it bears more than just a passing resemblance to WoW.  But, without seeing the UI, or combat controls, I will reserve judgement.  Depending on the controls and UI, they are either going to share aritistic style with WoW, or come off as WoW in space...

And my resource saver (IE, using background imposters and low quality models on non-focused views)
