Rift: Storm Legion Details Revealed!
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 9/06/12 6:22:05 PM
Originally posted by TomBaker_fan It works, up to a certain level of accounts. With the amount of people Trion has working on the game, there comes a point where its simply not profitable enough to do sub only. The only other games that are below 250k subs that are p2p are the games that are much older and have a fraction of the staff that Rift has.
If Storm Legion brings people back (and they stick around) than there probably wont be a cash shop beyond the occasional mount they do now. If SL only pleases the current fans than Trion might have to consider plan B. Hopefully they don't have to, and if they do that people are understanding of it. I think a cash shop is more likely than f2p, I don't see Trion going that route but who knows.
Yes, this is just conjecture on the most part, including Rift's sub numbers being below 250k but its hard to imagine they aren't at this point. Storm Legion will definitely deliver for fans of Rift as it is now. Will it deliver for those that are on the fence? Dimensions are a huge plus on paper, they sound absolutely amazing. The fact that they didnt address the dire need for leveling alternatives will hurt it. The game world needed to be 'tripled', but not added to the top, instead divided up amongst all levels. |

EverQuest: SOE Announces Player Studio
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 9/06/12 2:34:39 PM
I would really love to know exactly what goes on at SoE and especially what goes on between Smedley and his higher ups.
Im a SoE supporter, but don't think this is a great move. EQ2 probably has around 100-125k playing, so its not like anyone will make significant money off those items, players or SoE. Just make them drops. I don't mind the cash shop at all and i like that SoE is experimenting heavily with user created content, but this is kind of pushing it IMO. Actually I would like the idea better if the player got to choose to make a amrketplace item and get the 40%, or make it a drop and get nothing, just give SoE free weapon design but know that the boss of badassedness dropped YOUR greatsword.
Bigger issue is that EQ2 shouldnt have an expansion this year, AoD was so content lite it hasnt caught up yet. I strongly think Sony pressures SoE to put out an expansion each year for both games, ready or not. And i don't think they are helped out with development money from Sony so PS2 and EQnext money has to come from somewhere, hence the cash shop creativity. But I really do not know.
The only thing Im pretty certain of is that SoE isnt rolling around in heaps of cash laughing at customers for using the cash shop. That money is being put back into SoE, I just think they could do things a bit better to rase money. |

[Column] General: Top 5 Reasons to Cut Class

"Is the Pokemon generation off to college yet?"
They are in their early 30s now I believe. Long past school, or perhaps in their second tour of duty in school. |

Voice acting for the most part in GW2 is very good, but falls short of great or excellent. The Norn stroyline is the one that seems to be subpar voice acting wise, but Asura, Charr and Human are all above average quality.
I absolutely hated the presentation at first, but have grown used to it. I think i would just rather it be done in game, but I can live with whats there. Personal story takes up maybe 1% of my playtime anyway. |

who gives a flying fuck about sales records? Game is certainly successful and well received.

I didn't even read the original post because its blatantly obvious the OP has no knowledge of economics from the title alone.

Originally posted by DMKano The thing is, the Rift events are the absolute epitome of zerg. One of the (valid) complaints about GW2 is the zerg factor the DEs can take on. However, there is still mch more for the individual person to do in a GW2 event than Rift. You need to swap your weapons/skills effectively, you need to revive fallen people, avoiding damage is significantly more important in GW2 than Rift as well. Its just far more active of a zerg. And I havent seen the high level stuff, but The Shatterer is IMO cooler than any Rift invason boss (although SL may raise the stakes there) |

Rift: Storm Legion Details Revealed!

Originally posted by TomBaker_fan Hartsman said they have consider it. Its coming. But he also said that the money will be put back into the game. And I believe him. I also think SoE puts the cash shop money back into the game too. When you have the sub numbers Rift has, P2P just isnt enough to keep full support. |

Rift: Storm Legion Details Revealed!
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 9/05/12 2:42:17 PM
Originally posted by GoldenArrow We don't know that. They say they are 'tripling the world size', but Ill believe it when I see it. Pandaria is roughly the size of Telara, that we do know.
That said, dimensions sound pretty awesome. Probably not enough for me to return to the extreme currency grindathon that is Rift, unless the new zone design is a huge improvement over the old ones.
40 isnt a bad price though. Its not like they dont bust their asses. Its a fairly small sub base but puts out a ton of content, devs gotta get paid somehow. |

One major thing that Anet did right that bioware and trion (among others) failed miserably was focus very, very heavily on the world and its inhabitants. The amount of love thatr went into creating the zones and cities in GW2 is apparent and astounding. Tyria is ALIVE, moreso than any game released this milennium.
WoW understood how important a great game world was too. Anet just out executed them on it. |

Here is a recent example: Storm Legion will be tripling Rift's size! Not that Rift is a large game, but given that its only 6 zones in SL those zones will have to be pretty enormous to live up to their claims. But hey, it sounds good. |
