my quotes dont work WHYY!!

Anyways first quote is truth second is the bonehead im speaking to.

"Sandbox is a style game where the objectives are not predefined by the developer, you are given a world with some minimal predefined rulesets and you make your own game in it. "

"But I think YOU are missing the point that people on this forum are looking for a sandbox GAME, not just a sandbox. <----- WTF ?!?!

A Game has to have some objective, or it's not a game.(they used to be RPG's role playing=making believe with my own imagination) (Not hey mommie can you hold my bicycle seat while I ride around town with my training wheels on)Posters on MMORPG.Com aren't just looking for a box of sand. If that was the cause, they'd be happy with Second Life.""

You FAIL LEARN to read will you !! you cant read the first and last line of a novel and understand it can you its like you read right over the part thatr defined his statement. YOU ARE FAIL NEVER POST AGAIN!!

SANBOX=MY SIG!!!

Great another game of domino's then huh that blows I was actually gonna buy this at launch but now I am hesitant due to the rinse repeat scenario I see coming now. Here is how battle will go once the general populace gets in game.

1.Group a charges

2. Group B charges

3. whatever group takes more life wins due to morons running in solo in a long line of moronic Domino's and dies one by one till objectives are complete. You want an example go look at wow the insta re-spawn after dead was the MMORPG downfall.

Even in UO they has mechanics to make even a run to the healer hurt even if the healers where only 1 minute away from the fight. cause you still had to get to your body and get your stuff (if it wasent looted) or insured for those that stuck around after the debacle. As a mage type to get to your body and find you had no regents (used for casting)was a thrill cause if your teamtes where good they knew to try and keep people away from your corpse.

INSTA RESPAWNS FTL!!!!!!!

Make my healers res my ass make people look out for each other makes these damn games good again. To give insta res is to say to every dont give a crap about anyone on your team cause even if he dies he will bb in no time.

Long gone are the day's of cross healing in game's I suppose. The only place you see real healing is in damn raids and such. Even in the dreaded WOW ya you occasionally see some good pvp healers but few and far between.

Bring back team pvp and dependence on others. stop with this solo fight and die shit!!!!

GOD I'm starting to think I'm getting to old for these games. Im starting to sound like my grandad saying ",you think you got it tough I used to walk to school in 6 ft of snow going uphill both way's!"
Originally posted by Sophist But you see thats the point! That will bring out the true Explorers and the true nature of what these games are about. A Blacksmith may live in one town for his entire life while his son will become an adventurer. I guess if  you create an alt if possible.

I don't follow it religiously but I do hope its what they say and I thought I heard once that single character per account could be possible. Again I mention I don't follow it like a cult member. Saying this to not get flamed as a troll or fanboi or whatever in other words don't start a big argument over  how many toon's you can have.(not the point) actually if it IS one per you know people will multi account and again that could be considered a son.
Originally posted by Death1942 12 hours to travel? god damn dude that sucks. sure i want bigger worlds (and longer travel times) but half a friggen day is rediculous. i think maybe 4 hours is the max that i would be willing to travel (one side to another with no stops) thats a decent sized world (so the terrain doesnt stupidly go from sand to trees in a few metres).
But you see thats the point! That will bring out the true Explorers and the true nature of what these games are about. A Blacksmith may live in one town for his entire life while his son will become an adventurer.

This is where I thought games where going back when I played uo.For a treasure hunter to go out and find treasure he needs to have an explorers mentality but for someone who likes to fight fight fight  He would prolly want to end up near some big city(fort) and try to join the local defense(guild).

Not to mention the vastness of the world creates trade possibilities and such unseen in games. But then again maybe not Eve is prolly a good example of trading over vast teritories.

Only the true Explorer will ever even think of seeing the entire world  and never plant his feet but then the ones who do so in mass will see epic battles im sure. This game if delivered as promised will be an atraction to a lot more people then even us the gamers know if done properly..

And I wish I do see that game someday even if its not DF.

I gotta say I play a mage as well and even though Locks Rock my socks off all the time cause of that buff eating damn thing. But I must say that hunters 1v1 do not pose to much of a threat to me. If I get ganked by 4 of em yeh I'm screwed but one is typically easy to kill cause he never expects my tactics maybe.

1. Sheep Hunter
2. Kill pet
3. Kill hunter
= live mage in a bubble.

now granted this does not work everytime but I get more wins then loses as long as no others inter"fear".(I made a funny)
you LOVE Arena. I can not agree with only this part of what you say and below only cause it is not possible for a newer player just hitting 70 's or w/e and enjoying anything about going against a season 3 geared person. No matter what lvl of player skill he has he will be anialated for just exsisting near the same space as the geared person. That in my opinion is where blizz messed up badly but with rading gear and such they had no choice. So in essence the nail was in the coffin from the get go.. I just cant understand why they went in such a hardened lineare path. I personnally think they shot themselves in the foot cause soon you will get the EvE mentality of why bother starting now Ill never catch up. I tryed a few arenas and did not like it but I am sure that had to do with the fact that I was not in game for season 1and 2. So comming into the game to face gear that could kill me without anyone's avatar even being in it made it pointless to the point that I only log in to toss a few spells and see the pretty pixels now. 99% of the time im in bg's now I barely pay attention and only do it to try to make myself believe that I do want all the bullcraptastic gear.(till something better comes along) ]

WRONG oh SO WRONG and I can prove it !!!!!!! In just a few months time you can be very well geared in the new WoW ! Example !: My son made a Rogue from scratch 4 months ago. He made it to 70 just 7 weeks ago. What did he do? As of 60 he played a lot of BG's and leveled through some dungeons. He is now already good and has 2 season 4 brutal gears ! And he has even got this title of Challenger (rating 1740 in 3rd season of Vengeful) Stagger at EU Dragonsoul if you want to control it . Because it was a pure PVP character you can see it through its reputation bars, but he can do end raids without any problem. As a matter of fact my son is now leveling another (alliance) rogue to supplement our Alliance Arena 2 pala+hunter team for 3 vs 3. Started at the end of June, we expect this new character to be competitve at the beginning of september.... So a new player (that's good) catches up after about 3 months playing. 4 if you play slowly. Oh BTW this Stagger rogue raided yesterday without any problem up to the 4th boss of Zul Gurub. So ....THAT is exactly why Wow is soo good these days ! PS My son studies latin AND plays national football, so hardly he plays more than a couple of hours a day.
"In just a few months time"

You failed in the first few words of your reply bonehead thats sad as hell!!! NOTICE I NEVER SAID anything about taking 4 months to GET the gear I said its no fun for the guy getting the crap beat out of him for 4 months (hence not enjoying) PLEASE read a post before you reply to it for god sake!!!

You have no clue and have no idea how to get one. I'm not sure whats worse!!

Edit  *-This was in response to Oakthons post dunno why it didn't quote properly and I'm to lazy to fix it right now.

And I still play Ultima Online on a free shard with old rules where real griefing happens, not these new MMOs where griefing means "three guys killed me (but I just respawned and only lost some xp...)" /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman";} Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman";} I've never been griefed in my life...and even when it happens....
So which is it? Either you have been griefed or you haven't. Whether or not you get upset about it has nothing to do with the intention. The act of griefing does not cause grief, it's an ATTEMPT to cause grief. Whether or not it succeeds is irrelevent. I don't let griefers get to me either. That doesn't mean I want a game designed to encourage griefing. There's no reason you can't design a game that allows for LOTS of different types of play styles. WoW does a very good job of this. Some people would have Blizzard FORCE people to play a particular style that THEY enjoy. I like the way Blizzard does it. It ALLOWS for PvP, but doesn't punish those who attempt to avoid it. If I'm attacked by someone that I have a decent chance of killing, I'll stand and fight and tip my hat to him if he kills me. On the other hand if I get attacked by someone 3 or 4 levels above me, while engaged and my health is at 50% already...well I just can't be bothered with those people. I'll just die, rez and escape thank you very much. I get as much enjoyment out of escaping this person as I do a win in a fair fight...maybe even more.
Well said. The first time we will see organised open world PvP in a structured way of "some" balanced classes in an MMORPG will be WotLK. Dark Age of Camelot had SOOOO much issues with the balancing of classes they had to call it a RvR system, because as a team based PvP system the game was a laugh in play balance. Tx to Arena,... Blizzard at least gave a decent try to balance something in 3vs3 and 5vs5. More just can't be done in an MMORPG, but at the same time this Arena study will at least result in a better class balance in open world fights IF the rules and balancing techniques will be further finalized by Blizz. Some say there are "only" 4 BG's in Wow with a 5th coming out in WotLK, but the "polishment" and play value of these BG's are constantly tweaked. And IF you are a really hardened PvP player you LOVE Arena.

I can not agree with only this part of what you say and below only cause it is not possible for a newer player just hitting 70 's or w/e and enjoying anything about going against a season 3 geared person. If you don't love it, you are just a ganker of low levels in Strangleton Vale and the Crossroads. No merits or rewards by Blizzard on that kind of playing style and justly so!

For your information I had some of the best times in the game at Crossroads and the vale.(in my 20's-30's)(somewhat remotely similar to  fighting for spawns in UO) I can recall some pretty damn good fights happening back in the day in the world pvp spectrum.Once i hit 50 I was all instances back then for XP. That or Bg's for rank...

Its sad I remember thinking before WoW came out I can't wait to burn down a town as WAS advertised to be in game.(Alas It didnt happen)

Personally I thought the best pvp they had though a bit unsteady due to being released after the game went live by a few months or whatever, was when Av first came out . It did feel epic in a sense IMO clashing in the field of strife for 12 hours was the way I thought it should have been. But even then people complained it took to long and blahh blahh.

That was the whole point it was two factions going at it for supremacy. But noooo everyone wanted to be able to get 20 av's in in the 25 mins online every night or whatever. I think av should have been treated like the plans for public quests in WAR that would have been a much better design plan imo. reward people for comming and going for what amount of dps they do or how many npc's they kill and so on. But nope blizz went the way of grind fest and what did we end up with 5 minute races to kill the boss.(GO KILL ONY if you want just boss kills.) But W/E I'm not ranting just stating a design flaw that could have been taken in a more healthy way for the game as a whole yet blizz seemed to take the short path on pvp.(again and again since the addition of bg's and so forth)and went all out on the PVE side to what avail. Now more people are in bg's grinding gear then raids it seems. I cant attest to that but it sure feels like it when all activity in the world seems to mob around battle masters.

I think that once they made the decision to add pvp/bg's/areanas that the focus on all development should have been split between the two so that both grew as close to evenly as would be apropriate but it seems like the pvp gets no love.

Nerfs and changes and nothing new persay.Give me 10 times the honor for killing someone in open pvp that might stimulate the world pvp and energy a bit or something. Even another type of point system to record such a thing so I could get diferent gear indicating that I will kill you in the wilderness if given the opertunity.

Anywho just trying to kill time at work but thought i would toss in a tid bit.

I've read a lot and like the discussion but really have nothing to say as I'm not lazy :D

That being said not to hijack the tread I must add that this encompasses everything ANY game should be designed around and been saying the same thing in different ways for a few years now. But after reading your comment in the quoted post I will never say it any different then your example. And also if you don't mind that  line just became my new sig.

I can see the point of a first MMO being  a "first hit" type thing but I have also been stating for years that MMORPG's no longer exsist and that we are only left with MMO's now.

Its been said a million times I'm sure but how can you go from owning a house in a game to not even having the option and feel "more" emersed. its just not going to happen. I will admit that I have not played Lotro but I can bet that peoples housing is a big factor in the emersion feel and gives a player the sense of owning a part of the world a bit more. This and more are the reason I have been saying MMORPG's are "devolving " to a point of ho hum drumness. For people to play a game for over 10 yrs even though the sub numbers are not in the millions imo says a lot.(UO)

I believe once we start seeing moves twards more World environments and less a story books we will see a new era usher in and the sun will rise on that day.

Create the world but let us the players bring it alive.. give us the tools to do so and it will happen.

Sadly it seems to be going exactly the other way around.  Its the devs that deside exactly how things are done and if its not done like they want - then they simply change it and nerf classes and specs.

But I totally agree.  mmoRPG stands for not following the one linear story that all the others are supposed to do - but instead go your OWN way  - create your own story, play like you want to play - with the skills that you want your character to have.  When are we going to see a MMO game like that ?  Never.

Umm, EVE? Mabinogi? Ragnarok Online you can argue that one too lol.

I will admit that EvE does give me a piece of what I look for but I wont sit here and say its nail biting combat. You can pretty much tell if your screwed or your oponents screwed upon the first few seconds.(most battles not all)

As for the other two I  think I tried rag for like a week and never even hear of Mabinogi. But again there was something lacking if it couldn't even hold me for a week. From what I can remember I believe I foung rag to be clunky combat but please remember its been so long I barely remember. Point being is I still think UO had it right  with a good speed on combat and good tactical dynamics. Though they did ruin the game ultimately it had qualities that should have never been removed from mmorpg's.
