i'm going to be ageist here. you were 8 years old in 1999? you're too young to write this article. when you were playing everquest, your brain wasn't even capable of critical thinking yet, and it just barely obtained the ability to imagine the role of another person in order to play team sports effectively. i'm about 4 years older than you. i remember reading the ultima online pdf manual and imagining how cool it would be to play, and buying asheron's call and having to return it because my parents thought the idea of subscribing to a game was crazy. my first mmo was ffxi and i loved it, yet i wouldn't trust myself to write this article. 

i clicked the title hoping to get the opinions of an older gamer, someone who was actually conscious in 1999, or preferably 1995. oh well. you should have picked a different topic and left this old vs. new thing to someone who actually experienced it as an adult, or at least an adolescent. shit.

people with lots of posts acting as forum police piss me off. sorry, i couldn't resist.

EDIT: in case you didn't notice, i'm a third person. i was defending someone's else's post against the forum nazi. i could see how if you read it wrong or assumed i was the same person it would change things a bit lol.

And your comment is any better?  First off there is no such word as hater, it is called a critic and the purpose of a forum is to discuss likes and dislikes.

And your comment is any better? First off, hater is a word because we all know what it means despite it being slang, and it has a different connotation than critic so its use is warranted. And uh... whatever. You probably felt good being a police officer. So anyway...
 

I've enjoyed Dragonica, but I think the aesthetic will get a lot of negative attention and cause the game to get a bad reputation before people even know what the gameplay is like. The action side-scrolling elements are pretty exciting and fun despite the kiddie looking art style. I prefer differently themed games, but It's definitely worth a try, especially if only to unwind after school or work. ^_^

Top 10 Reasons NOT to buy DARKFALL
 
1.3rd person Human walking/running animation seriously looks like he has something stuck in his ass. I would be seriously embarrassed if I was the animator that made the human run animation. this doesn't bother me. i understand that it's an indie title and besides, emphasis on graphics is really what's killing games these days imo.
2.Running around is ridiculously slow. Mounts look/feel like their running in slow motion. this is something that would potentially bother me.
3.Game is setup so that High skilled players continuously prey on the weak newbs and somehow Darkfall players get off on this. i would expect this type of thing to happen in ffa pvp. duh.
4.No place to gain skill without getting ganked. this should be in the same sentence as point 3. again, duh. but i also get the feeling you didn't try hard enough to find a secluded area.
5.No future. Not worth investing time into it. what is this based upon? i think it's getting enough attention and is economical enough to go on longer than Aion.
6.3rd person view options are lame. yeah. this could be true.
7.Crashes and kicks you for no reason. Lots of people including myself experienced these problems. Sometimes after a crash the game will not let you log back in for hours. i doubt it's THAT unstable. this is the first i've heard of such problems.
8.Two words. Auto Loot. Getting carpool tunnel over here!! Autoloot even if it has a countdown in seconds to 5 or something. Autosell. autoloot would ruin the gameplay dynamic the devs wanted. you're not supposed to be able to loot everything instantly. and i doubt looting alone is stressful enough to give you carpal tunnel...
9.This game is hacked to high heaven. All the “great” players are using wall hacks / radar hacks etc. that are easily found in a google search. yeah. i've heard that. hopefully they'll iron that out sooner than later.
10.UI is unintuitive and clumsy. i've heard mixed opinions about the UI. i hear it takes some getting used to and gets better once you customize it to suit your play style. 

i haven't played the game, but i've been interested in it for quite some time now. i probably shouldn't have replied to such a garbage thread, but i'm bored. but yeah, i think if you need to try harder before you get a list of 10 decent criticisms. even without having played the game i can tell half of them are bullshit and/or you being butthurt. talk about gameplay aspects i have no idea about and you'll stand a chance at being more successful.
 

the fact that they aren't introducing new races doesn't bother me. i actually don't want any new races. sometimes introducing new races IS the lazy option. i mean, it's pretty easy to say, "hey you can be a goblin now! isn't that awesome?!" no. it's not that awesome. it's just a different graphic model with some different numbers attached to it. in fact, i hope SE never feels it has to introduce a new race because i would prefer them focus on other more enjoyable gameplay elements that don't require me to make a new character to enjoy.

part of the beauty of ffxi was that you could experience everything with one character. the developers are shooting for the same thing in ffxiv, so to introduce new races would just be kinda stupid. especially if the current races embody all the archetypes necessary to balance the game for an individual's personal playing style.

the instance brought up by the OP is most definitely sexist because it communicates gender inequality. this is a fact that cannot be disputed. however, you can argue about whether or not it bothers you. you can also argue whether or not it demeans women. personally, i think it demeans women because it reinforces stereotypical gender roles. in another reply it was mentioned that what if the roles were reversed and it said "This is Jane . . . She got her head cut off by a guy." That actually would in fact empower women, contrary to what the poster asserted. This is because the woman would assume the gender role of expected power. In that case, the woman would in fact be humiliated by an "inferior" male and thus the advertisement would be empowering women, despite the ironic fact that a woman was defeated in that specific case. Furthermore, giving her an identity suggests that the female's identity is important while the male's isn't. So, the actual ad is in fact negatively sexist on multiple levels. It suggests not only that women are collectively physically inferior, but also that a woman's identity is not important even if she achieves something unexpected. And by contrast, a male, even if he is weak and fails, is important enough to identify as an individual.

Perhaps this advertisement is fitting for Age of Conan because Age of Conan is a game that reinforces gender roles and so to have an advertisement that reflects the game's content may be a good idea. It would probably be a bad marketing strategy to promote gender equality and then needlessly alienate a gender sensitive audience once they started playing the game. I can actually agree with the blatant sexism for this reason. Potential players should have an idea of what they're getting into and know from the advertisement if it is a game for him/her. It would be the same with any other mundane feature.

Now, If you had put Dungeon Runners on your list, a game that has been out for a year and now has a swish box with the awesome Bling Gnome, I would have picked that.

 

what a bunch of useless stuff to say. if you don't want to talk about games that haven't been released yet, maybe you should leave this community. that's pretty much half if not more of the of the discussion on this site. and ADHD where did that come from? Diablo was probably around before ADHD was even invented, or at least entered the vocabulary of pretentious douchebags. to be fair though, dungeon runners could have also been in this poll in that it's a hack and slash diablo 1 influenced game that may or may not be popular with teens diagnosed with ADHD.
 

i've never looked it up and i haven't read replies above mine, so let's see if i embarrass myself here. i would guess a memory leak is a programming inefficiency which fails to dump or reset collected data that is no longer needed and instead it just keeps compounding and over time will create a big drain on the system's resources. okay. now i'll open my eyes and see if i'm going to get smacked in the head. lol.

i'm playing mindless f2p grinders while waiting. i'm busy with school right now so they're useful to just  space out to and relax for a few minutes. i've been playing dragonica lately. it plays like a hack 'n' slash game so it's pretty fun in short mindless bursts. i didn't really like aion when i beta tested it, but it is a solid game at least if you have cash to drop on something. from what i've been hearing about the servers, good luck with that though. darkfall has caught my interest for a pretty long time. if i had more time and some extra money i would definitely be playing that right now. i'm a bit of a masochist so the warnings of constant ganking almost sound fun to me. lol that aside, the game sounds pretty original and awesome. 

another thing i've been doing is playing through the FF series chronologically. i downloaded a gba emulator and played through the remakes of FF1 and FF2. i'm playing the NES version of FF3 right now and it's pretty fun. the old ones are pretty short, with a walkthrough you can easily beat them in about 10 hours. that's what... one day of saturday mmo style grinding? easy shit :)

to all the people griping about not being able to log on: go read a book or do something else and play tomorrow. do you really expect everything to go smoothly the minute they open the floodgates? be realistic.

the people who want auto-attack are just voicing the concern that they don't want to have to hit a button for every individual normal melee attack. you would still have full control over your skills and spells and the target you attacked as well as positioning which will matter in ffxiv. even diablo 1 let you hold the mouse button down and auto-attack with normal melee. (edit: actually, now that i think about it, i'm not so sure it did lol... so think diablo 2 instead haha) i think anyone would agree it would be tedious and stupid to have to hit a button or click for every single attack.
 

the only exception i can think of for this would be if attacks were very spaced out and counted for a lot. for instance, if you only had to hit an enemy a handful of times before killing it and/or you didn't have to fight a ton of enemies to gain decent rewards. hmm. perhaps that's what SE is going for this time around?

 

i was just thinking about this about so i'm gonna throw this out there. the new ffxiv system sounds comparable to mabinogi. where the choice and timing of your attacks matter a lot in your opponent's ability to counter and deal more damage back at you if you make a mistake. 

i haven't spent much time playing mabinogi so i guess someone else would be better at drawing this comparison. in any case, if that's kind of how it is i'm sure ffxiv's new system will be pretty fun and engaging. ^_^

I have never in any game had any problem figuring out what buttons to push in real time, and Im an old guy.  Its just not that quick of a sequence.  To me turn-based can only mean that each party member takes turns.  Did the developers REALLY ever call ffxi a "turn based" game, or is this what people are interpreting it as in order to make sense of them calling ffxiv turn based?

 

If the developers never called FFXI a turn based game, but now they are calling FFXIV turn based, then it seems to me they are implying that FFXIV is different not the same.


 who said anyone had a problem with it? i certainly don't, and i wouldn't expect anyone else to either. i wasn't saying it's quick like a button mashing rhythm game. i was describing WoW's system as being faster than ffxi. i was merely trying to describe the difference in style. let me emphasize two things that you ignored:

1. Did you play ffxi? if you did, you would understand the difference and we wouldn't be having this discussion.

2. I would describe it as "turn influenced" rather than "turn based." whereas games like WoW emphasize a real-time feel.

i'm not sure if they called ffxi turn based, but from having played it i can confidently say it does have that feel. the combat system in ffxiv will be modified but should also have a similar feel to it as ffxi. they will be different, but similar. the combat system in ffxi and ffxiv will probably have more in common than either game does with hotkey action bar games like WoW etc. it is a different battle system all together.

i've been playing in the beta test and i was initially surprised at how fun the game is.  character customization is pretty sweet, you pick their age, modify any body part, change clothing, skin tone, eyes, hair etc. you can play as a 4 year old with a massive head, a preteen, or an 18 year old dude who's 20 feet tall and anything in between. plus, all of this is changeable at anytime by going "shopping." i think that's where the item mall comes in, but there are many options available for free and after playing only a couple rounds i had enough money to do pretty much anything i wanted. 

the music is pretty sweet too. very dancy. the gameplay itself has varying difficulties. the beginner mode was just that, but the hard mode is pretty much impossible for me. if i keep playing it'll take me a while to master it and get bored. although, like any rhythm game, once you play through all the songs a bunch of times it gets boring. i haven't gotten that deep into it yet, so perhaps they're implementing features to give players a long term interest. your character can level up, but i'm not sure what effect that has on the game. anyway, it's fun so i recommend people give it a shot. 

EDIT: found out some additional information... the game really shines in battle mode with items enabled in which 3v3 or 2v2v2 teams throw items at each other to mess up their opponents. it's a hell of a lot of fun that way. also, levels do nothing except if you obtain level 10 you get a closed beta t-shirt for your toon. lol.

 

it would be slightly off topic there, but you might have better luck starting a thread on the ffxiv board and seeing if anyone waiting for ffxiv would be willing to reroll in ffxi while waiting. some still play too, so they could maybe guide you better. i for one am interested in both games, so i'm sure we're not the only ones.

i haven't played for a year or two so i'm not sure on populations, but do they let you pick your server now? apparently there's some fiasco involving credit cards, but if possible i wouldn't mind playing again too. i also blame the ffxiv hype. XD

this is awful news. it's really hard to believe that such an unthinkable thing would happen especially with an old game like ffxi. why would they even bother to "upgrade" their payment system at this point... makes no sense. although in a way, this doesn't surprise me. PlayOnline has been a shitty system since the beginning and SE has never handled payment as well as other subscription MMO's. here are some problems i experienced a few years back that pissed me off:

1. there used to be a policy where if you took a break from the game and didn't pay for 3 months they would delete your character. i lost 2-3 characters this way.

2. they bill on the 1st of the month regardless of when you sign up, but they also bill you when you sign up. for instance, if you sign up on August 30th they'll bill you $12.99 for two days of access and then bill you again on September 1st. i would have to time the activation of my account in order to avoid getting screwed.

3. this one was by far the worst. if your account was inactive for a year they would lock your account and serial number. i wanted to play again after chains of promathia was released and actually had to repurchase the game. i called a rep to try to circumvent this policy, he basically said, "yep we see your account, it's locked. you have to buy a new disc."

SE fails in this department more than anyone in the business. that being said, the game was amazing so i was willing to live with those things. however, this discrimination against credit cards isn't something that you can just swallow. i bet my card won't work either, which is a damn shame because with all the FFXVI hype i wanted to play FFXI a bit for nostalgia's sake.
