++ Info for People looking for a new MMO. ++
General Discussion « Atlantica Online 8/09/09 1:43:46 PM
i would also recommend this game. I am currently at level 34 and it is good to know that I am in the gap, since I started getting a little bored of leveling.
The tournements are alot of fun too. It is great to work up the ranks, although the event tournement last light was absolutely ridiculous. Seriously.... round one was me (level 34) vs a level 110. Not a very fun battle. |

someone suggested the delphi server as being the best since it is the newest... anyone else confirm?
edit: lol. i logged on to see like 10 noobs in the first noob trainer zone, compared to 0 on the other server. gg.

im also looking for the best english server. I just picked one at the top of the list... |

ok... this is not a mmorpg. you make a creature, and then join a lobby. in this lobby, you can walk around in a small area, fish, and challenge people. Combat is 1 on 1 and turn based. Each creature can attack from 5 parts of its body, and depending on your opponents attack, you either do high, medium, low, or no damage. There is room for strategy, as you can combo multiple attacks of the fire sort for example. The game does not seem very deep, however, and most people I battled ignored my rather colorful trash talk. Like one person out of ten even said anything... makes me wonder who I am battling?? Performance is ok... the lobby areas got a little (alot) laggy with even 10 people in them. After trying to create a second account to make a second creature, my second account got insta banned. I am not sure if this is good or annoying.
Overall... it is not what I thought it would be. It is more like pokemon then a real mmorpg... but I guess it would be fun if you bought enough item shop stuff to become imba, and could just pwn everyone. Battles are slow, and sometimes frustrating, as alot of stuff (criticals, misses) are based on a rock, paper, scissor system.
Whoever gave this an 8 needs to be fired. |

Are there any dungeon f2p MMORPG'S with small community?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 8/04/09 7:08:21 PM
i played dungeon runners for a few weeks...
it is actually a fun game. I would recommend it. I stopped because I was no longer in the mood to grind levels, but there is some player skill involved too and it is fun to be strong enough to impress other players and help them out too. |
|
|
im doing to download it now. why not... mmorpg gave it an 8 which is pretty outstanding. |

mmorpg with multiple chars or pets?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 8/04/09 6:49:27 PM
Looking for a mmorpg that allows one to control multiple characters at once, each with their own equipment and stats, etc.
Alternatively, looking for a mmorpg that allows one to control multiple pets. anything? |
|

Death systems. And yes, Hardcore is stupid.
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 8/03/09 3:46:31 AM
Hard to say really...
If you want no downtime, play a fps. full loot is ok, but at the same time, it discourages pvp, and makes a necessary wait between pvp events since you need to replace the gear you lose.
MMORPGS need to think bigger. IE, territory control. maybe dying means nothing for the individual, but for a faction as a whole it could spell losses. |
|
|
any info on the games that advertise on mmorpg.com, yet mmorpg.com does not review. For example, a search of red war turns up nothing. |

it's a grind/macro fest -- picture a 3d UO, circa 1999/2000, but badly implemented compared to that UO.
remember grinding swords, tactics, magery, spell resist, et cetera? it's uo, complete with all the bad mechanics... It's as if the devs lived in a bubble for the past 12 years and learned nothing from anyone else's mistakces.
I dont understand why someone would call it a grind fest? I have never ever ground any of my skills, yet I am very good in pvp, simply because all of my out of game skills are very high. (good teamwork, strategy, timing).
And lets not forget. The biggest mistake mmorgs have made since uo is... to not be like uo. shadowbane's citybuilding and siege system is one of the few exceptions. Darkfall adds FPS pvp. |

It seems that when a person plays the game and decides to quit, they are much more likely to make a post about it then someone who enjoys it.
And also, when reviewing... try to remember that a numerical rating must make sense when compared to other games. Some of you say it gets a max of 5/10... and if you look at the game list this makes it one of the worst games on mmorpg.com.

who cares about afk macroing. It really gives very little benefit, so let those who want to open up magic schools do so.
It makes such a little difference. If anything, macroing should be PART of the game. we automate as much of the boring stuff as we can in the real world, why not in Darkfall?
give me a good reason, other then by saying its cheating. |

I spend 80% of my time not crafting, harvesting, or grinding. I have never ground any skills, nor macroed them, although if you need to catch up quickly, you can easily macro while you sleep.

NOW THE FUN STUFF you need to catch up quickly, you can easily macro while you sleep.
And why does me being excited about this game make you not want to play? Are you trying to be vindictive?
I just want to give my impression of the game, and to represent the thousands of other highly satisfied players.
And for those of you who question my post count, the games I have spent meaning amounts of time playing have been:
99-01 or so? ultima online 01-02 ish shadowbane 03-05 nothing 05-08 on and off with dota currently darkfall

A review that will appease both fanboys like me and anti-dfers?

edit: breaking down the advertised features of the game is a sad thing to do. Are we going to penalize them for being ambitious? Is it not possible that they realized some of the things they set out to do in the beginning became irrelevant to the core of the game as they designed it?
Sure, it would be cool if NPC mobs built their own cities and interacted with the game world, but it's really just a novelty. I would rather be interacting with people. More then anything, mobs function as a source of gold. How is currency created in the real world? It is printed by the government. If you want to play a game where the focus is on killing mobs, then Darkfall is not for you. If your focus in real life is on accumulating wealth, and not what you can spend it on, then life is not for you. |

The "this game isn't for everyone" imo is overused. To restate it, I don't care if the activities need a group or not. After all if they need a group I will find one. I ask the alternatives of goblin killing for a new player.
lol. you went from an innocent new player looking for help to this. Now I see where you are going with this thread.
There are tutorials in Darkfall too, called quests. If you follow them, you will be given some basic weapons and gathering equipment. Also, this equipment is fairly cheap, 20 gold for a pickaxe for example. We all have to start somewhere. Being a sandbox does not mean you will be able to start the game with the ability to instantly own a city. Work your way up, or join a clan and get some help. |

General Discussion « Darkfall 5/19/09 4:11:43 PM
Hey guys, thank you for all of your responses. I am trying to read them all. I have posted some clarifications along the way, and it seems some of you have missed them. I know this thread is starting to become too long to read the entire thing, so I will try and edit all my posts into the first thread.
darkraiden, xyzax - thank you for posting that review and commenting on it. It seems he would agree with me on many of the aspects I consider most important like pvp and the community. It is true, you may enjoy Darkfall for only a few months, and then get burnt out for awhile, but that doesn't mean that its a bad game, or that you shouldnt play it for those few months.
rhinok - yes, i did made a second post about graphics somewhere, and I agree that they are not super realistic. But again, I would rate the graphics in uo very highly also. Things are just nice to look at. There is a wide range of armors and weapons that people wear, and every thing you put on is reflected in how your character looks. Some people will rate graphics only on their realism, I rate them on the feel they give the game, how I think the art looks, and how useful they are (for example, I can see what weapon you are using and know how much damage it can do).
Cik_asalin- thanks for another point counter point response. I think the guys who did this show they have at least played the game, and are able to offer it a fair review. Whether any individual likes or hates the game, I think overall the average consensus will be that Darkfall is a good game.
polarization- through your sarcasm you actually made the best post on the negative aspects of the game. You are right, but again many of these negative things only account for a tiny fraction of my play time. Sure it takes 20 seconds to craft 20 arrows, and that is a bitch when I need to craft 1000, but those 1000 arrows might last me for 2 days of pvp. Regardless a good read. I believe we just weight things differently. Sure, some things are mundane, but they are simply preparation for the exciting.
finally, fariic. - you changed the meaning of my statement from "if you feel the need to level up quickly, you can always macro" to "you NEED to level up quickly, so macro" thats a big difference. Personally I dont feel not macroing has made a big difference for me, and I would never say you need to do it to be competetive.

Originally posted by Fariic I stopped reading here. Sorry. You're advocating cheating. This is one of the reasons DFO is a bad game. The fact that a large portion of the playerbase either does cheat, or is ok with cheatig. You ARE NOT allowed to AFK macro. That one line tells me that you have indeed macroed skills, and done so while you weren't at your computer. I'm sorry,
Did you not read the line directly proceeding that one? I say right there that I have never macroed.
And dont cry about AFK macroing. That in itself is a minigame. People are smart in how they do it, and with the new patches you cannot gain skill with newbie weapons, so you must risk gear if you are to be AFK. Only afk macroing inside starter towns is not allowed. Outside of towns, GMs do not care at all.
Macroing only gives the tiniest of advantages now. Almost everyone does it a little bit, so that they can spend less time leveling magic. Yet, many people only save themselves about an hour a day or less, as they are unwilling to risk a shit load of reagents while AFK (AFK macroers get killed all the time by enemy clans, even within cities).
EDIT:
You actually took my words wayyy out of context. If you look where you cut it off, you completely change the meaning of what I was trying to say. My original quote is
NOW THE FUN STUFF
I spend 80% of my time not crafting, harvesting, or grinding. I have never ground any skills, nor macroed them, although if you need to catch up quickly, you can easily macro while you sleep.

Bah, you just lost me. Shame and you almost, almost had me convinced up until you started calling 'noobs' people making a living out of what you do for free, also if you give a score stick by it you only lose more credibility if you change it within such a short time
lol. Just because they get paid to do it, it does not make them experts on a game. The developers for aventurine provided the server logs for the reviewer's account, and showed that they only played for less than 3 hours. Also, the reviewers posted screen shots, but these screen shots all show a brand new character, once with the loot of only one goblin being his only equipment lol.
Not to say they are bad writers, but that they are new players to darkfall. Just like I told you all I have only 300+ hours of play time, ed zifron should have said he only had 2.5 hours.
I will let you know that someone made a clan called eurogamers net following their review. Over 250 clans declared war upon them following this within a matter of 10-15 minutes. So I can tell you that most of the community agrees it was a bad review.
AND. nothing in my review is wrong, nor is it biased. If I left something out, it is because it does not matter to me, and it does not affect game play.
The three most important things in Darkfall are: 1.) it's community: your clan mates, the people you fight against. 2.) PvP 3.) fun
I have absolutely no complaints in any of these categories, except maybe the limitations of my video card (which is a bad one), and the distance between Europe and North America. Neither of these are aventurines fault, and honestly I enjoy my new European friends, and would not wish for us to be separated in two different servers. |

Yes this is Tasos, I created this account five years ago to lie in wait and then when my game fails, trick you all into buying my shitty game.
seriously, I just want to rate a fucking game. Is five years not long enough enough? |

As a concession to all of you, I will give you this.
Sometimes it is mundane, sometimes we are having a shit load of fun.
The siege system in darkfall is much better then Shadowbane, yet the city building (since you could design) was better in Shadowbane. But nothing in shadowbane was incredible inspired, nor did the city walls ever matter as much as they do in Darkfall. Unlike Shadowbane, where you simply select a target, and hit a button to cast a spell, you must actually aim, and therefore higher ground does provide not only cover, but a better perspective on the enemy.
Anyway, how many of you have played the game?
edit: all the bugs and glitches really make very little difference in pvp. Sure, I can kill mobs through a wall, but it's boring as hell, and just reduces the time I need to farm. Also, people know about these spots, and its not uncommon to get ganked there. |
