Slot Machines in Middle Earth? A new low in MMORPGs...
General Discussion « Lord of the Rings Online 5/20/13 3:51:59 PM
Originally posted by waynejr2 I guess it firstly comes down to whether something can be called gambling if you don't lose anything. IE, the free pull. I think most would say it isn't. Would anyone argue that poker for chips just to keep score is gambling? I don't think so. Now imagine playing poker for no money and still getting something for it. This is the LOTRO HP model if you don't buy more "lever pulls". But then, you have to ask if you are gambling when you're guaranteed to win something that costs more than what you spent for the extra pull. I think this is arguable either way. |

Slot Machines in Middle Earth? A new low in MMORPGs...
General Discussion « Lord of the Rings Online 5/20/13 3:00:40 PM
Originally posted by Torvaldr I agree with this. I don't have much of an issue with the concept itself, but it would have been much better as a phone app, or just put it in the browser like the lotteries they already have. EA does the "free prize, but you can buy extra pulls" concept for their Simpsons phone game, too. It's not a new concept in the world of free games, and morality wise, I think it's a step or 2 up from the chests that only open with keys you buy from the store(I think nearly every F2P has this right now). For those that struggle with gambling addiction, I can understand their being upset, though. There's no denying that it appeals to that impulse. Certainly the "boxes/store keys" appeal to this, not even having a free pull. But as others have said, raiding has that appeal as well; it just doesn't let you buy extra "pulls". For me, I've only profited. I only do the free pull, and have gotten a number of consumables, as well as a Universal Crafting kit which costs about 160TP (about $1.40-2.20 depending on how you buy points). |

Please Help: New Player: Banned for Unknown Reason after 2 Days of Playing [RESOLVED]

Originally posted by Rytz Definitely a fair criticism; there needs to be at least SOME middle ground between the splash pages, "Welcome to the game!" and "You're banned forever, scumbag!". Especially for something like this. Glad that it looks like things will get resolved, OP. Enjoy the game! |

Please Help: New Player: Banned for Unknown Reason after 2 Days of Playing [RESOLVED]
General Discussion « Guild Wars 2 2/06/13 12:06:01 PM
Originally posted by rawfox Hate to tell you this... but assuming you're speaking the truth, I'd bet money you fell for a phishing scam, and weren't in contact with NCSoft at all. Support personnel would NEVER ask for that sort of info. As to the OP: It's against the game's best interests to ban a player for no reason. So if they banned you, odds are your account did something bad, whether you did it or not. I'd change your pwd's on every account you have, if it were me.

Originally posted by mmoDAD I'd say... SWTOR felt like I was interacting in a movie. SWG felt like I was participating in a documentary. A really bugged, rubber bandy documentary. SWG was better and more interesting in concept, but a trainwreck in implementation. SWTOR was KOTOR 3, for better or for worse. |

Originally posted by dopplemmo This right here. Could have been a good discussion, but the OP had to pull out his (most assuredly huge) Epeen by assuming non-PvP'ers are afff-f-f-f-f-f-f-fraaaaaaid!!! False start called on the first play. There are plenty of reasons to not like PvP, and seeing as how nothing in PvP causes any RL pain or suffering, there's no reason to think it's fear-driven. For example, I don't like most forms of PvP for the same reason that I don't like games that tend to support griefing practices by players(Eve being my only and inexplicable exception). I don't like that I could be wanting to get from point A to point B one days and constantly be ganked halfway by a player twice my level; something that frequently occurred to me in WoW. If you were driving along in RL one day and you kept encountering some situation which made you go back to point A, would you be: A. Sss-s-s-s-s-s-s-scarrrrr-r-r-red? or B. Pissed? Nobody plays games that piss them off.

Sub Numbers - Are all MMOs in decline, or is there one that is growing?

The Secret World or The Secret Rip-Off?
General Discussion « The Secret World 12/03/12 12:10:43 PM
Originally posted by lizardbones This is pretty much where I was at, though I don't even mind quest hubs that much. I played shortly after launch, played my free month and quit. The quests just might be among the best I've experienced in MMO's. Great atmosphere, great story, some pretty good puzzle concepts... the single player aspects were pretty much on par for a good single player game. If they had gone the GW2 B2P w/mt model, I might be playing, these days. I quit due to lack of content, the non-lack of bugs, and basically just a short playtime for an MMO. While the zones are good sized, the world is tiny, tiny, tiny. There's just not enough of anything to justify a monthly subscription. And finally, the combat was often just annoying, as the game world was mob-populated for a stand and attack game, so you'd keep getting adds as you dodged and moved. Lastly, there's almost no replayability; certainly no reason to roll a new toon since the story differences are just cosmetic and no faction has any exclusive playability. The moment in beta when I realized that almost every mission is repeatable I should have known what was coming: A non-linear Diablo-esque replay experience but without the loot. Rerun the missions over and over, fill out the wheel and get your purples. Still, I hesistate to call it a ripoff, as I paid 50 bucks for it like I would any SPG, played it til' "the end" and quit. I supposed I could say it's a rip since I could still play that game now if it were an SPG...

Do you still think GuildWars 2 was that "Revolutionary Game That Would Change The Genre"?
Reviews & Impressions « Guild Wars 2 10/18/12 8:55:41 AM
Yes. It's a good game, one that has a good number of ideas that newer MMO's would be idiots not to implement. And it has addressed nearly every problem I've ever had with MMO's. That said, it does not ruin older games for me. Still love LotRO, despite some systems that I can't help but snicker about in comparison; some of which they try to address in RoR. See? GW2 is already influencing the genre... I love Eve. I'll still check out WoW if they send me a free pass. But in my book, GW2 fulfilled all its promises, and has as much content, often even more content than most sub based MMO's. And I see myself playing it for a long time. |

Originally posted by Gaborik I like GW2, actually. But yeah, I'm playing Rohan, and will go back to GW2, later. 1. I DO like the redone login music, as well as Rohan's music. The same piece, sure, but rearranged and much more dynamic. The recording quality even seems much better. And I like that some of the "townsfolky" music has some "out-of-tuniness/imperfect timing" to some of the instruments and performances. It feels more like "decent but imperfect players playing on old instruments" like you would hear in middle earth. Something tells me 13 dwarves all playing instruments and singing would sound less than perfect. There's an authenticity to it. 2. And it's been a good story, so far. It's really nice to finally get back to the fellowship. 3. I already yakked about that, above. 4. Amen! And instant/remote looting! A must for mounted combat, but also very helpful for ranged classes to not have to go running down the body. Devs, PLEASE put this into the rest of the game... 5. Definitely looks good, but definitely uses way more memory on my machine. Good thing I have plenty to spare. |

Originally posted by Sovrath I don't think you're artificially blocked. You can even do the Epic by using a rope outside the gate to Lothlorien to access Galadriel. Mob-wise, though, they start at about 76th level. I haven't been too big on mounted combat in the open world, so far; it seems like you just keep circling and firing, often aggroing a half dozen other mobs nearby. But there's an instance called "the riders four" where you go after mobs on horses, and THAT is awesome. I was actually bummed when it ended. They should do some skirmishes like this. I don't know how fast the horses go comparatively to standard mounts, but I'm specced for speed (16 m/s, whatever that means), and it looks and feels like real horse speed at a full run. The big negative is that it feels like the server is having trouble keeping up. I don't rubber band, but it feels like the server is pulling me back. The rest; pretty cool so far. I'm through the east wall and a good chunk of the way through the norcrofts. Anybody annoyed with raid gear being obsolete the moment they step in shouldn't be; almost all my gear was crafted 75 crits, and I didn't start to see stuff that even competed til' about level 78. I still have most of my original gear at 79th level. |

[Column] Star Wars: The Old Republic: SWG Features I’d Love to See in SWTOR
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 10/10/12 9:26:51 AM
Originally posted by Threatlevel0 I'm pretty sure they were trying to be realistic; offer suggestions that might be somewhat do-able. I could actually imagine multiplayer vehicles, for example. provide tools for player events, etc. Your suggestions add up to "make TOR into SWG". Even big maps like Hoth and Tatt would never accommodate player made cities, for example. You'd have to rewrite the whole game. |

Do you see yourself playing GW2 past 2012?
General Discussion « Guild Wars 2 10/10/12 8:41:08 AM
Originally posted by Ariannae This. And... It is, and always was meant to be a sub free alternative to my MMO playlist, and it has since exceeded my expectations. I was addicted for a few weeks, playing MUCH too much. I almost literally had to pry myself from it. As far as how long it will stay on my drive, right now I see it much like I see LotRO, my mainstay, which I've been subbed to for over 4 years. There will be times when I won't play for weeks. There will be times when I'll play for weeks nonstop. The only diff is, GW2 won't cost me a sub. |

Monthly updates are smaller and smaller
General Discussion « The Secret World 10/09/12 2:08:12 PM
Originally posted by SnarlingWolf Indeed. If we get to redefine content, we can even go after Rift, despite the fact that Trion has been dumping unprecedented amount of stuff on its players since launch. I'm actually not too fond of the game(Rift), but their patch notes look like Santa's naughty list. Credit where credit is due. A new weapon is content. A holiday event is content. New NPC scripting is content. Mission output is dying down; that's a fair enough statement. Once all the half done stuff that wasn't available at launch gets finished, you see this happen. Happened with most every MMO I've played. That said, FC should have never promised monthly content. With or without the layoffs, that's a release schedule that's doomed from the start. It's just not a long enough period to get material tested and shipped, and it shrinks the scope and ambition of the game. SWG couldn't do it, DCUO couldn't do it, TOR couldn't do it, and TSW can't do it. These companies REALLY need to stop promising these sorts of things. |

WoW & Mists is boring...unsubbed, going back to GW2...
General Discussion « Guild Wars 2 10/09/12 8:44:53 AM
Originally posted by Vorch It's been this way as long as I can remember. And it has never made sense. Even moreso in this case. Quitting a game generally means you stopped subbing to it. GW2 doesn't have a sub, so saying you quit is pretty pointless, anyway. If the game provides any enjoyment at all, there's no need to dump it. Getting really tired of the sports team mentality that people seem to feel the need to have about everything, these days. I've stopped playing GW2 for the moment, as I'm gearing up my toons for my mainstay MMO, LotRO, RoR. But I'll definitely be back. I've cancelled my Eve sub, but I'll be back. If Blizz gives me a free MoP trial, I probably will check it out. F2P Secret World? Bring it on! Free from the "I like X game, so Y game is da suxxorz" self inflicted trap, my game queue is massive and I'm having a blast. |
