Gratz TSW on moving to the top of the "Released Game List"

Originally posted by AIMonster You're right. I didn't list the positives, except the investigation missions. They are one of few reasons the game MAY deserve a top spot. I also admit the overall feel of the game, minus my issues, is pretty nice. The zones alone are breathtaking in my opinion but wasted. The combat could have been so much better, that would have really made it better for me. I may even be able to deal with the poor character creation if the combat was at least on par with AoC, or twitch-based (as it should have been)... |

Gratz TSW on moving to the top of the "Released Game List"

Gratz TSW on moving to the top of the "Released Game List"
General Discussion « The Secret World 4/20/13 10:22:09 PM
Going to throw my two cents in here. First off I cannot even begin to understand why or how this game is #1 for released games right now. I'll give some examples of why it shouldn't even be part of the top 5. Before I begin I will say that I beta tested, preordered, and played this game putting in several months and reaching rank 10 gear/skills before I became absolutely bored as tits and left. I'm also a huge fan of the urban horror genre and it takes a lot to make me sick of a game in that genre. Going to list some reasons in numbered points with explanations: 1) Character creation is just bad. As a fan of character customization and uniqueness I was sorely disappointed with TSW's character creation system. It didn't even come close to Age of Conan's which featured enough customization to, for the most part, create a unique looking character. It boggles my brain why both games run on the same engine yet TSW, the newer game, has far inferior character creation going almost as far as making WoW's chargen look better by comparison. In a battle between presets and actual sliders the presets always lose, especially for a roleplayer. 2) Combat is plain and boring and worse than button mashing. Again, it's got a dramatically downgraded combat system compared to Funcom's Age of Conan which in my opinion has the best combat system out of any MMO that isn't twitch-based. There is no skill required and sitting there hitting 1-3 abilities over and over again doing dick all damage to the mobs is quite frankly more boring than LotRO's sorry excuse for combat. This is by far the biggest fail of TSW. 3) Small zones which purposely encourage developer laziness and a poor excuse for no mounts. The zones are so small that there is no way we will ever see mounts in the game. You'd think with a slick ubran horror game with all it's touted features it'd have larger zones, even adding 10-30% more landmass to each zone would make vehicles/riding animals viable. Nope, Funcom decided against one of the biggest staples of MMOs. Some may disagree but walking and running is boring and the lack of mounts takes away an important layer of gameplay. 4) A themepark MMO wrapped in a psuedo-sandbox skin. The game mechanics were designed, in my opinion, for a much larger world with some sandbox elements yet for whatever reason (likely laziness, lack of funds, creative drive) Funcom decided to turn it into a cleverly packaged themepark. Looking at the amazing investigation missions, the only part of the game requiring skill, you'd think they'd fit better in a sandbox. 5) Small population. Population always felt small. Never saw many players running around and getting groups for missions and dungeons was difficult at best. Even if you did manage to get a full group for something it seemed that almost ever tank I ever found was improperly decked or geared. The deck system favors certain builds and many of them were DPS. It was very difficult to find player-made builds that worked well to rank 10 and coupled with the lack of players it made group play a rare but disappointing feat. 6) Informed players spoke, nobody listened. As a result the game goes B2P with paid DLC. The players who would have otherwise kept TSW from going that route left because of some of the stuff I've stated above. People would have been willing to pay a monthly sub and continue playing if we didn't have to pay for DLC or waste time with a cash shop. I'm sure 80% of TSW's original supporters would have stayed if Funcom had made the game a little more vast, a little more open and a little more sandboxy as well. My biggest gripes with TSW are points 1 to 4. 6 isn't so bad, but I will likely never play the game again or pay for DLC. A game with these flaws doesn't deserve to be #1 nor a top 5 candidate. Out of the total amount of MMOs on the market today I'd say TSW should fall between the #10-#20 range. Pretty graphics and a decent fully-voiced storyline do not compensate for the failures I've listed. Sorry fanboys. Sorry Funcom. You fail. |

Hey guys. I haven't posted a forum thread in a while and I figured I'd give it a shot. Today I'd like to present to you a personal dilemma I am having involving which of two games to buy and play next. The first is Defiance which I had been watching then on the fence about when it launched. I've been hearing it's not exactly what people expected nor is it as vast and amazing as I was once lead to believe. At heart I am both an FPS and MMORPG gamer so I really want to know if it will cater to my basic needs. First off, I'd like to know how the gunplay realism and physics are. Is it really good? Is it fun to tinker with different guns? Are specific classes required for different gun types (ie; sniper rifles, assault rifles, SMGs, shotguns, pistols, etc)? How's the gore when taking out mobs/players? How much of an MMO is it? Is there any viability in actual roleplaying? I know those are a lot of questions but they're really all I'm truly wondering about Defiance. The answers will help me determine if I can and will enjoy it long term or if it'll be one of those buy and play for two weeks kind of deals... The second game I am considering is Darkfall Unholy Wars. I know this game is getting a lot of flak due to Aventurine's track record as well as some recent revelations about what features or lack thereof will be in game at launch. Are the missing features enough to merit not buying it for launch? Will any of the missing features detract from the overall enjoyment of the game? Given the amount of time it takes to become powerful/established in the game will I reach that point before AV adds the missing features/towns/etc into the game? I know DFUW is a bit cheaper than Defiance but it does still require a subscription. On the other hand, I don't have to pay for DLC or expansions with DFUW whereas if I want access to new content in Defiance I will have to either pick up the season pass or pay for DLC as they arrive. Those are secondary concerns atm and won't really affect my choice but still concerns nonetheless. Thanks in advance for any answers that help me make my decision. Also, please no fanboys/haters. Just give me truthful and solid opinions/hard facts... |

I pledged $0. The reason? I don't believe for a second that the game will be anything near what is promised and even if it is it's a completely stupid concept. Practically no NPCs which really hinders the overall experience I think and also hurts the roleplaying experience. Sounds like it'll be pretty much like how Fallen Earth is, with little to no NPC interaction as a difference and the horrible PVP crowd. Pass. Also, love how the OP boasts that he "kickstarted" $250 in his sig. Do you want a medal? Nobody cares. |

This is the kind of shit that drives me nuts. Minecraft is NOT an MMO. It's also not new, like the OP said. This site is really pandering to the corporate masses lately isn't it? I guess I shouldn't be surprised really but I'm definitely angry. Just because one popular server might have an estimated 500 players (and likely not all on at the same time) does not make it an MMOG. In fact, it doesn't really fit the term in any way. Massive to me should be over 5000 players, though I realise some emulated MMO servers boast 800+ players as being quite good. Minecraft wasn't designed as a MMOG. It isn't one. Get a grip people. |

The game still looks like one of the best examples of a WoW clone I've ever seen. The engine appears to have been stolen direct from Blizzard themselves... Nice try, Mr. Smart, but you fail.
Sincerely, A better class of gamer. |

Originally posted by Xasapis That's just it. I haven't tried to roleplay yet but I can already see what it will be like. Either discussing rifts, various assassinations or my travels. Sure, I could try to find some companions to do this with, but even then with games that follow the themepark method it's hard to find another roleplayer who isn't claiming to be the "big bad hero of the whole world and then some"... |

QWOP. Hands down... Don't believe me? Search Google... |

As a somewhat neutral party, and having been a player of WoW, WAR and LoTRO, I can say that RIFT does in fact take all the good bits from those games. It also removes some of the bad things too, but I can't help but feel like all the fluff and shininess in the game is all that you can really expect. No real depth. No real purpose to continue logging in after hitting cap. Sure, rifts are quite interesting and invasions coupled with them make the often shallow quests a bit more fun to do, but at the end of the day I'd like to know that what I have accomplished truly made some sort of difference in the world. For me, that is the greatest thing that I personally can take from an MMO (something I haven't really felt except for in the bane of my own existence, WoW)... I'm also a hardcore RPer and enjoy immersing myself in my character and the world he lives in. I can't say it'd be hard to do that in Rift, but there's only so much my character can talk about or do. I can sit in a tavern (only seen one in Meridian) and talk about my latest exploits-taking down a death rift all by myself. I can make up actions like assassinating some Guardian prick who spit on my odd-looking mount, or how I think that same mount is mentally deficient because he runs in perpetual slow-motion... To put it bluntly, Rift is a more serious, more mature and polished version of WoW (around WotLK, before Cata), with elements of WAR, and a hint of the Rings. What really disappoints me is the clever, yet unappealing, masking of a somewhat simple and outdated character creation system. I can change my character's overall face shape and the texture, but I can't go in-depth and really tweak his looks. For all intents and purposes he looks like the next Eth who happens to set his skin color to the palest one. I actually tested it. I found my evil twin! Oh, but he was a bit shorter than my character so I guess that doesn't count, does it? Perhaps when they cloned him from me, they borked the bone-restructuring sequence which made him pop out without calves... I want to see if Trion can pump more flare into Rift. I want to see if they'll make the character creator more advanced, maybe like Aion or Age of Conan. Maybe they'll add some sandbox elements in. They'd surely kill WoW (it's main competition) if they did that. Maybe player-housing as well... Ah one can hope. Just for shit's and giggles (and to extend this wall of text even further) here's my ratings: Graphics: 8 / 10 Gameplay: 6 / 10 Sound/Music: 7 / 10 Immersion: 3 / 10 Fun Factor: 5 / 10 OVERALL: 6 / 10 (Nice try, but no dice Trion!) |

Playing RIFT while I wait on some games. Just finished Dragon Age 2 and needed something to do. Will be jumping ship when APB: Reloaded (played in the beta and retail pre-cancellation), GW2, SWTOR, TSW and WoD release or if Earthrise gets better... Also waiting on AC: Brotherhood, The Witcher 2, BRINK and TES V: Skyrim. |

Before I even consider buying I am wondering if anyone plans to roleplay in RIFT and if it's at all viable for a roleplayer to join in on this game. |

Nice, thank you then! Congrats to everyone else who gets to use it too! |

I wouldn't mind a buddy key if anyone has one. Planning to buy the game very soon but would like to test it out first! |

Hmm. That's always been a big issue for me. If I can't customize my character's face I feel like a clone regardless of my costume or armor or whatever... |
