I don't think we fully understand your post. Are there any games like this? Will there be any games like this? As far as I know, no and no. Do you just want to discuss if we would like games like this? I would love a horror/gothic MMO, but not on the horizon so far. Anyway, I think you have no responses cause we don't really know the question. Or because the answer is just no.

To the OP....I apologize for misunderstanding your reason for the post. The people responding however seemed to jump on the rankings with a lot of  " X is ranked higher than Y?...no way!". I just wanted to clarify what the magazine article was really about, the 9 MMO's they considered worth trying, that's all. And to be honest I haven't read every page in this thread, so they discussion may have morphed by now, but the first page or two was all arguing about the rankings.

In an effort to kill this ill conceived thread....I have the PC gamer issue in question and the OP is mistaken about the game rankings.  The magazine never ranked these games, there are no numbers next to the games....for some reason the OP chose to rank them from the lower right to upper left of the page, reading right to left.  If one takes even a moment to look at the article, you can see they were listed ALPHABETICALLY, reading from top  to bottom. Discussion over.

Regarding STO. I would like to know what kind of MMO people expected from this IP? Most of the tv series' take place on a ship ( except DS9) so being on a ship makes sense. Do you really want to be a science officer or security personnel on someone else's ship? I don't. So making everyone a captain makes sense. Cryptic was very clear that being a captain in no way stops you from having a science, security, or medical background.  Picard was a diplomat and archealogist, B Crusher a doctor, Janeway a scientist etc...

I just started playing  LoTRo, and while some quests are the " go kill the bear that ate my homework" variety for the most part I feel like I am doing quests in a storyline. Killing all the bad Blackwold raiders sacking the towns for instance. The problem is,  a lot of people don't actually read the quests and have no idea why they are doing something. These ARE RPG's and if you want to be immersed in the story, read the darn quests.

Keep in mind Cryptic is the developer who gave us the amazing level of superhero customization in CoH. So I am, happily, not surprised that STO has highly customizable avatars.

I played the free trial and the game looks amazing. Leather armor actually looked like leather, all wrinkly and such. And I think it has the best crafting in any game. I want my crafting to be a mini-game, not just click and combine. And then the diplomacy game, a card game that I barely understood, but between PvE, crafting, and diplomacy, certainly a lot to do.

Now, why I didn't subscribe....I am an MMO player who likes to solo. No time to defend that preference here and now but I was told Vanguard is almost exclusively a grouping game. Sorry, but that is a game killer for me. Really too bad, I liked the game a lot.

Agree, and very harsh death penalties! XP debt, or paying repair costs doesn't make ya learn anything or become a better player. Learn from your mistakes and attempts.

No mini-map or heck no map at all is good too....I wanna go explore and get lost or have to draw my own maps...hehe

I couldn't disagree more. Harsh death penalties don't make a better MMO. Trying to find my corpse in EQ was NOT fun, just a frustrating timesink. And death was rarely a lack of skill but being in the wrong place when someone brought a train through. Exp point debt is a nice balance of no death penalty and too harsh a penalty.

No map?  Are you serious? Do you know how many people are directionally challenged?  Not being able to find my way around has been a factor in why I have stopped playing some MMO's. Not the only factor but it contributed. And I know many others who feel the same. Do we need question marks over quest givers heads? probably not, we can talk to npc's. But a mini map is a definite need.

Actually, no I am not sick of MMO's. And if you are, why are you on this site? I'm sorry but there is so much negativity on this site when it should be a supportive place for the MMO community.  Thoughtful criticism or a wish list of what one hopes for in future MMO's is one thing. But I get sick of hearing how these games suck. Fine, if you feel that way go someplace else. I, for one am looking forward to a lot of MMO's coming out  thru 2010.

By the way, I also enjoy single player games like Fallout 3 and Bioshock. I just love games and get tired of people pissing on them.

To those 200, 000 SWG fans waiting for TOR.....Don't!   ToR is going to be the exact opposite of a sandbox game, it's completely story driven. Different  quest paths will open depending on your actions or responses, but thats the only way it is not linear. I'm hoping it will feel epic and heroic but it won't be about open exploration  and player freedom which is what I gather most SWG fans miss.

My local Best Buy had many copies, both Lotro and the expansion

And that is why I have zero interest in Darkfall. However I  hope all you "hardcore" gamers just love, Love, LOVE it! Then maybe you'll stfu about casual gamers, care bears and WoW killers. I have tried almost every MMO and haven't found the perfect one for me yet, but all the MMO hatred on this site is wearisome.

Shouldn't we, as a gaming community, be encouraging people to play? The more successful the genre is, the more games will be made. You won't like every one, but you will have more choice.

I, personally, tried a PvP server for Asheron's Call years ago and experienced  the gankers as soon as you left the starting area. They were not  killing for loot but to satisfy their pitiful egos. Not fun to not be able to actually PLAY the game you're playing. But if that makes you happy I hope its everything you wanted. Go play and stop bitching.

The Agency will have in game advertising in lieu of a monthly fee.....which is fantastic and fits with the modern setting. They may still have microtransactions tho which is... to me.

Huh?  Disrupt what?

hidden1, be realistic. Game developers are not making "art for art's sake". They're in it for a profit. And a recognizable IP is much more likely to draw the attention of the casual player than an unknown title. And there are many more casual players than hardcore. You do the math.

Personally, my post wasn't commenting on people subscribing, just more people playing. I just want them to keep the current players happy and prevent more attrition. Worry about getting more subscribers once they shore up the numbers they have.

I agree. 1.1 seems to have lured some people back,  and oRvR is greatly improved. Only time will tell if people will stay or it's a temporary increase.

I enjoyed Heavy Metal. My main completed it. However, they made it much easier when they changed the format from a daily quest to all quests open at once. There are gonna be a lot of players playing the new classes early.

What about Diablo 3???

Umm, Diablo 3 is not an MMO, and this is MMORPG.com

Are you serious city of heroes predates that game and people could solo easy to max level.

Are you serious? I played CoH at launch and No Way could you solo to max. Now you can but not when it came out. When it launched you couldn't opt out of missions so if you had 3 hard ones you were just stuck. They have changed this game a lot in terms of  difficulty.
