Since it's promoted by SoE it's obviously just a funny viral marketing tactic.. why are sites marketing this as something other than that?

They made a pretty good video though.

I really dont understand the objection to the sub+cash shop model when the shop is purely for vanity and there is no reason that any player HAS to use it. It offers zero advantages to those players that do choose to use it. So who cares? Its no sweat off my sack if someone wants to drop some $$$ on a new beanie or a leather coat for their toon. Whats the issue...? WoW has a cash shop more or less that offers purely cosmetic items to players, why isnt that considered a strike against it, when for so many people its a deal breaker when it comes to TSW.

1) Buy the game

2) Pay for the game

3) Cash shop in game

All 3 is greedy.

Any two is ok (as long as not P2W by MY definitions)

The only purpose of the cash shop is.. to make things for the cash shop.  All of the money made is to support additional clothing for those people.  It has absolutely nothing, at all, to do with the game.  At all. Period.  Money made in cash shop = money to make more items for cash shop.  If nobody buys cash shop items, no cash shop items get made. It's completely self sustained.

It has the added benefit of clothing that was made FOR the cash store eventually coming into the game, in addition to ALL the other clothing ALREADY coming into the game as part of the regular updates (and there has already been additional clothing into the game just in the first 2 patches that aren't in the cash shop).

I've seen games triple dip but the clothing store in TSW isn't one of them (by MY definition).

Dulfy has compiled them here:

I took a couple screenshots of the new aux weapon stuff on TestLive.

Each ability costs 50 AP.  You have to do a quest for Council of Venice to unlock the 8th active/passive slot (not on TestLive yet).  You can only use aux active/passives in the 8th slot.

http://i49.tinypic.com/2e6a0sy.jpg

The weapon skill Rocket Launcher is 1 rank (well, 0 to 10 with 1 purchase) that costs 35 SP.

http://i45.tinypic.com/25jgv4l.jpg

Rocket Launcher abilities (couldn't get cooldowns since I can't open the slot without the quest):

Pop Shot (Active)
TAoE Affects up to 5 enemies in a 5 meter radius around your target. Deals 239 physical damage.

Rangefinder (Passive)
Increase range of all Rocket Launcher abilities by 5 meters.

Clusterstruck (Active)
GTAoE: Affects up to 5 enemies in a 5 meter radius around target point. Deals 368 physical damage.

Rocket Science (Passive)
Reduces recharge time of Rocket Launcher abilities by 50%.

Death from Above (Active)
You rocket leap 15 meters forward hitting up to 5 enemies in a 5 meter radius where you take off and where you land, dealing 216 physical damage. Deals 9% of your maximum health to you when activated.

Warhead (Passive)
Increases damage dealt by Rocket Launcher abilities by 15%

Big Red Button (Active)
TAoE: Affects up to 5 enemies in a 5 meter radius around your target. Deals 497 physical damage.

I'm not sure why I was hoping the OP's point would get across.. but I guess it's too late to stop the insanity of the pure hatred that exists here.  Just look at how many people felt the need to belittle the game in a public spotlight (even if they have never played it at release, don't plan on playing it or have no interest in it what so over).. even if the article wasn't about the game itself.

Any excuse to bash the "cool game to bash" at the time I guess.  There was very little TSW bashing at all until Suzie started doing articles and then the waves of negativity started coming in and destroying the forum.

Eventually the hateful mobs will move on to the next "cool game to bash" and the cycle will start again... but not until after the damage is already done.  The wonderful anonymous internet damage that nobody thinks about.

I think they are scared.  Rightfully so.  I'm sure they've had a chance to play GW2 now and I bet a bunch of devs at these other companies will be secretly playing GW2.  Just like people were secretly playing WoW when I was working at WAR.

TSW was released on 29th of June (well, early access). Funcom stated they wanted to deliver monthly content updates, called therefore 'issues'.

Issue #1 went live 28th of July.

Issue #2 will go live (if nothing goes wrong) 28th of September.

I don't see how this would be any indicator they're scared of anything. It's their regular update schedule.

Plus, I don't really that much shared customer base between GW2 and TSW. I'd say traditional high fantasy MMORPGs have potentially more customers who would potentially jump ship. TSW has its own niche as being one of the few contemporary MMORPGs with a hefty dose of dark horror and adult themes.

If you say so.  guess you work for TSW to know this was the date they had set up before they knew when GW2 would launch.  Also, coming the day after Blizzard announced their next major patch on the same day...yeah, ok.  I don't believe in coincidences.

Are you seriously this paranoid?  If so you should be playing TSW :)

No, the patch date isn't because of GW2/PandaExpress.  This is the second monthly patch and it's at the end of the month just like the last monthly patch.

They've been saying since release that this stuff was coming "by August 31st."  Tuesday is the patch day they use every week (except this week because patch was delayed 1 day to fix a bug found in testing).

TestLive first patched 1.1 on 7-17 for a 7-31 live date (2 weeks).  TestLive patched 1.2 this morning on 8-15 for a 8-28 live date (2 weeks).

After 1.1 went live, they started 1.1.1 on 8-2.

This is normal patch schedule for them... they can't release before 8-28 or it won't get tested enough and after 8-28 would miss their weekly maintenance and "monthly" update promise.

This was a good article.

I'm so tired of hearing people wishing that a game will fail.. they don't even take into consideration what they're asking for.  They're asking for hundreds of employees to lose their jobs and ability to provide for their families.. simply because they don't "like" the game or have some deep set grudge against the company because of a game you played 5 years ago.

If you don't like a game, state your reasoning and move on.. don't spend your time bashing the game and wishing for failure.  It doesn't help the industry at all.

MMO developers have to be some of the most selfless people on the planet to work such long hours for very average pay to make a game that so many people end up hating, wishing for the failure or of wishing personal bodily harm to those who work on it.

It's sad to read so much, especially on this site.. especially in an industry where something "new" is rare.  Everyone wants a company to try something different and then hope for their failure at the same time.

There are toilets, port-a-pottys and restrooms everywhere... I think the author needs to look harder.

I understand the author is only in BM but there are at least half a dozen or more just between Kingsmouth, SC and BM.  No you can't see every single one in every zone because houses are closed and locked.. but the ones you can go into generally have a bathroom (sometimes closed/locked).  The mansion in BM has a nasty bathroom.  The Wabanaki reserveration has restrooms.  Port-a-pottys all over the construction site...

You pretty much nit picked 2-3 retailers out of a couple dozen that are selling them at a heavy discount.

I'd be weary of anyone selling a cheap boxed product.  Those who bought the "cheap" versions on the internet ended up buying a pre-order box without an actual retail key.

Though there are some legit retailiers.. the ones who are selling them that cheap don't have perfect feedback so I'd be weary myself.

I'm not worried since nobody I know buys "boxed copies" of MMOs anymore.

I think the bigger thing is don't use projected estimated income as proof that you can pay for your loans.

Rhode Island offered them a ton of money to move there thinking based on false information.  From what I've seen the whole thing is shady.. and having a politician anywhere near it isn't good for trying to skirt regulations.

Holy crap.  They have to let go of a few developers (which is probably somewhat normal in the gaming industry from time to time), and you guys think the end of the game is tomorrow and it's outright failed.  "It's failed", subs are barely there, horrible game etc. etc.  Holy hell what a crappy crowd of grumpy groans.

I don't play it, but I bet you it will still be around a couple of years from now.

Also, since when did F2P mean fail?  I thought if you found a better way to make more money then you were doing good.  Some people might even call that smart.  Many of you guys just cast F2P into the bad bin and move on.

Jeez

To be honest (and I'm neutral on TERA) when the community manager and a network engineer are two people who are known affected.. it's not a "normal" staff cut.  You don't let the face of your company to the community go at the same time you let off the "normal" offload of after release cut backs.

I'm sad for the people who lost their jobs and I hope the game recovers.  Despite what those who don't like the game say.. the genre needs innovation and flavor if it's going to stay alive.  TERA is one of those few that try to do something different (whether you agree that they succeeded or not is a different discussion).

I wish they find jobs soon.  Sane people don't work in the gaming industry.. it takes a passion for long hours and believing in what you're doing.  Always sad to see someone's job lost who you know had so much dedication.

Thanks for the helpful feedback!  Not as good of news as i would have liked, but I'm better informed for it.  And it hasn't swung my decision to the "no" side yet.  Thanks!

The "trinity" isn't as rough as some seem to make it out to be.

Yes, if you're doing Nightmare dungeons (the hardest content in the game) then having a tank/healer/dps/support roles are required... at least right now.

People are gravitating towards these traditional roles because it's what they know.  The game is only a month out of the gate so a lot of people aren't taking the time to push what is possible.. instead relying on what they know that works in a basic fashion.

I know of Nightmare tanks who use Shotgun/AR to tank.. totally against all logic and reason for the "trinity" folks on which weapons should be used to tank but they still can do it.

Healing is always going to be required in any game that has any type of threat system.  Those same Nightmare dungeons require a lot of teamwork and awareness... support abilities are absolutely essential.  Purges and cleanses are required or you'll wipe.

Wiping on a boss is unforgiving.  There is no rez ability and they can't run back to re-join the fight.  You get to watch at the rez point (via the cool combat cam that shows you the team member of your choice in the fight) but one person dying usually means a wipe on the boss unless you have some serious mad skills.

But we're talking about Nightmare dungeons which are the very very tip of the very end of the game.  Up until that point, regular and Elite dungeons can run with just about anyone as long as you're smart.  Tanking/healing/DPS'ing isn't required for questing.

While a rogue in Rift can tank.. there aren't any rogues here.  Anyone can take any ability.  You aren't limited to always being a tank if you don't want to be.  I personally have tank, healer, DPS and offheal/Support roles that I use all the time in Elite and under runs (don't do any Nightmares yet).  I play whichever role my group needs at the time.  Hardly a restrictive system compared to all other MMOs out there.

Anyway I just wanted to add my two cents on the subject.

Of course this wont change the original creator, it means you have to play the game to be able to really open up your customisation options.

on top of your subscription costs?

No they are in-game shops that take ONLY in-game currency (Pax).  Every existing character will get 1 free voucher at each business when they come into the game.  Ragnar was very clear to specify that these will not be in the cash shop even as a secondary option.

The character creation options from these shops will be free in the character creator for new characters that are created.

They mentioned in the first live stream that it would be something REALLY big..

That's pretty epic.  One of the many cool things about a game taking place in current time.

Thank you for the fair review Suzie.

I will just add in my 2 cents that if anyone thinks they want to try the game (rather than rely on trolls who "played beta" which was completely different than the current state of the game)..

There is a free preview this weekend starting Friday August 3rd until Monday August 6th.  Go sign up for the free weekend and judge the game for yourself.

Stop taking the words of others.  It's free to try this weekend so try it for yourself.

Great work, thanks a lot for that

What memory leak ?

I run with Win 7 64-bit and 16 Gb of RAM. Never had any issues with memory...

People want top of the line graphics/options in an MMO engine but then they don't want to buy the machines to run those options.

No game engine is going to magically run high end specs on 4 gigs of RAM.

The disconnect is that people think this is AoC.. it's not.  It's TSW.  The Dreamworld engine has matured and changed over 4 years.. it's not a 4 year old engine it's a current engine unlike most MMOs who license an old engine and use it for the entire production process.

Just because you could run AoC 4 years ago doesn't mean you can run TSW now.  You'll either need to turn down a lot of options or upgrade your PC.

The problem with MMOs?  It's the people who play them.  Why? Well..

Every time a publisher/developer looks at creating an MMO they are investing millions of dollars.  They can either "play it safe" which gets the "community" playing enough to make a profit or they can try something different.

Something different turns out to be a death knell with MMOs because as much as players want something different when it comes out everyone froams at the mouth saying "WHY IS THIS NOT LIKE WOW??"

With the amount of crazy, insane MMO players I'm not surprised they don't want to take a risk.  Either they play it safe and make a small profit or take a chance.. possibly losing their shirts and having personal death threats by people in the community.

If you want a thankless job it's an MMO developer.  Until the community stops scorning any game that tries to be different than nothing will be different.

This means if you don't like a game move on.  Don't spend hours trolling a forum for the game saying how it kills puppies and discouring any other sane person who wanders by against trying it because you have a vendetta against it.

basically alot of the things promised a month back in this update are eitehr not there, not what they said they would be and or weredelayed even further down the r oad. So far not impressed.  Funcom a veteran developer can do better, come on funcom still in yoru corner.

I still say Trion(Rift) has done the best out of the gate as far as updates etc and keeping to what they promised in updates. But I love both games.

Please enlighten as to what's not there.  Everything that promised for the July patch is there.  If you mean other things like raids, barber, character creator, etc.. those were never, ever mentioned for the July patch.. those were scheduled for end of August.

I don't know what's wrong with Gear Manager.  It's working on TestLive but not Live now.  I'm hoping it was some type of migration issue.

1.  Lots of guns all over.  I currently use a shotgun/assault rifle combo (there is also pistols).  The skins are pretty varied.. here is a site collecting screenshots of gun skins:

http://tempest-at-tr.guildlaunch.com/gwiki/index.php?page_name=TSW_Ranged&gid=201507

That doesn't include the special skins from dungeon guns.  Almost every weapon ins "skinnable" using what's called a Casing kit.  You can take a gun and a casing kit and create a "skin" (destroying the old weapoin in the process) that can be combined in your assembly box with the "skin" you made to give that weapon the look of the other one.  Obviously a rifle for a rifle :)

2.  There isn't really a cap.  QL10 is the highest gear level but you get that about 75% through the current adventure zones.  Once you can wear QL10 gear it's about filling out the Ability Wheel and Weapon/Talisman skills to add diversity to your character (still only 7 active/passive abilities) where you can combine 2 weapons with their 7 actives and almost any Passive from any weapon to create decks.

If you do all of the normal adventure zones, dungeons, watch the cut scenes.. probably 120-150 hours of playtime for the average person.  However this is not near all of it.  Once you finish the adventure zones there are Elite versions of the dungeons.  After you complete all of the Elites you run a special fight against the Gatekeeper to unlock access to Nightmare dungeons (which are currently the "end-game dungeons" that require a lot of skill and gear).  You get purple quality drops from Nightmares and Bullions which are used to perchase upgrade kits for those items.  You can upgrade purple Nightmare drops up to 4 times (called Tier 10.1 to Tier 10.4) to increase their stats.

You are also working on the 525 abilities and Weapon/Talisman skills during this period making your character more diverse in what they can do.

There are also Lairs in each adventure zone.  They are 5-man open world content where you slaughter tons of hard mobs to gather components to make an item to summon a zone boss.  Those bosses drop purple gear and signets, and then there are 3 Regional bosses that can be summoned as well.  Right now it is a huge time sink and only the Goons have done it but they are making a lot of tweaks to it in the near future.

The patch tonight adds 9 more missions, 2 more Elite dungeons that weren't ready for release, the cross-dimension auction house and loads of fixes/tweaks.  Upcoming content in the next few months is a raid, monthly content/mission updates, RP stuff, more clothing, additional character creation appearance options, etc.

3. There are no skill/ability resets, however the XP/SP gain is constant throughout the game.  This means that the same amount of XP gives you Skill Points and Ability Points no matter how many you have.  The difference is that quests/mobs in later zones give a LOT more XP.  So while in Kingsmouth you may be getting 1-2 AP per Mission, in the last zones you'll be getting 10-15 AP per mission.  The outer wheel costs are quite expensive but a short amount of time in later areas can get you AP/SP very, very quickly.  The lack of a reset is only slightly annoying at the start of the game.. most of the game it's not an issue.

There isn't a huge reason to roll alts unless you want to open the faction specific deck costumes.  Also when you complete Missions you get lore about the mission from your faction headquarters that is different for each faction.  If you really become a faction nut you could play all 3 factions to see the mission conclusion text for each one but I think that's a bit hardcore for me :)

You may want a male/female because their clothing is different but that's a bit hardcore too.

Cabals and Fusang are Faction specific, however.  Cabals are the guilds in the game and Fusang is the open PvP zone.

4. Group size is 5 and raids aren't currently implemented.

5.  TSW zones would be smaller than SWTOR zones, in my opinion.. I can't give a comparison to SWG except SWG dwarfs both of them.. however playing both TOR and the TSW ones, TSW are much better.  It's not just about the space.. like most things in TSW things exist for a purpose.  There is very little space in TSW that is "just there" to make it artifically bigger.  The areas are pretty packed with the actual game itself.

However they are still zones and they can still be small.

There aren't mounts in TSW but there is Anima Boost which is your magical sprint.  The highest current rank runs at twice the normal sprint speed.

6. I'm not big into sandbox stuff so I can't answer it much.  Someone else might be able to.  You can't really buy most items so they're found or crafted so once the auction hall goes up in 1.1 there will be a player economy.  They plan to add a lot of RP stuff to the game (such as player ran theaters).  Someone else would have to get more specific about sandbox.

7.  There are currently 3 PvP areas (I don't have a lot of experience with any more than Stonehendge).  Stone Hendge (king of the hill) and El Derado (capture the flag) are 5-on-5-on-5 matches (15 total) in an instance.  These are cross-dimension meaning you can get in pretty quickly from my experience.

Fusang is dimension specific and it's a huge open persistant 75-on-75-on-75 location control map.  It stays open 24/7 and people currently zerg control points, capture them for XP (the 30-minute cooldown missions) and move on to the next control point.  It's pretty huge so you can spend a lot of time running.

I think that PvP needs work overall and the devs have said it's high on their list.  They plan to make holding points in Fusang more important than the current zerg-and-capture that exists now.

I'm not a PvP fan but once in a while I'll do Stonehendge and Fusang for some stress release.

If you're interested in the game at all, there is a FREE 1-month celebration this coming weekend for anyone that wants to try the game (August 3rd to August 6th) you just need to create an account on the main site and follow the directions to participate.

As much as anyone can tell you about the game there's nothing better than taking a look for yourself and here is a chance.  I'd recommend trying it because it won't cost you anything to try and you may even like it :)
