I'm sorry reviewer, you missed the entire point of Diplomacy and Crafting completely... and of Vanguard.


 


I tried to read this article but it doesn't make sense.  The reviewer seems like an instant gratification player and that is not what Vanguard is.. it's a game from a previous era when you had to work at things.


 


This review is just.. well. Yeah.


I don't think you can ever really call a game that sells over 2mil copies a flop, especially when it was B2P.

 

I do wonder some though.. a lot of my guildies are bored and have already moved on.. like others have said, shortest time in an MMO ever.

 

I find it hard to login.. the economy is so bad people are selling things for less than cost to make and post (20 slot boxes sell for less than the store purchased material and the posting fee).

 

Another indication could be the price for Gems to Gold.  It opened at around 29s, dropped to 17s and now it's back up to 26s.  So less people seem to be trading Gems for Gold.

 

Personally I can't seem to make money crafting anything in the economy with the trading house cross server.  The only way I can make even small profits is by farming hours for mats and posting it but usually someone undercuts me right away.  Buying the mats to craft something? Major profit loss 98% of the time.

 

I have to wonder if this is all of the hackers crafting and selling crafted items made with stolen mats.  I have no idea except that I don't think I've ever seen a worse economy in an MMO before.

Mark, I think you're spot on with this article.. and I agree with other people who post that it's going to take a company who will take a risk.  Since the tools don't exist they need to build them and their own engine.  Well, that sounds a lot like Citadel of Sorcery to me :)

Someone is going to have to go back to what a "quest" is in order for quests to change.

 

"Quests" in MMOs today aren't quests, they're tasks.  A Quest is Frodo taking the One Ring to Mt. Doom and throwing it into the Lava.  Quests in current MMOs aren't like that.. they're tasks that are exactly the same for every player.

 

The only game I've seen promising to change this is Citadel of Sorcery (and maybe Origins of Malu but they don't offer much information on HOW they're going to be dynamic for each player).

 

Not much activity for Citadel of Sorcery on these forums but the devs seem to post a lot on their official forums.  We may even get to see the game sometime soon because they've been talking about a Kickstarter sometime soon.

 

I hope someone can change it because they are horribad tedious these days :(

Ace in the hole? I'm not so sure.

 

Remember those 600 layoffs a while back? I saw someone post that 60 of those were on the Titan project.

 

I'm skeptical that they'll risk changing any formula that has made them so much money in the past.  My guess would be that it's just another WoW in a skin named Titan.

For me, and a lot of MMO player friends I have, it's because times have changed.

 

When Everquest was out we were young.  We could play for hours in a block and camp loot over days.  We had the stamina and we didn't have the real life commitments.

 

Now that we're older, we have time consuming things like jobs and families.  Even if I had the energy to devote to that type of gaming I wouldn't want to.. too many years of doing it has just burned me out to it.

 

So instead I play with friends when I can and then I solo when I only have a little bit of time to play.  If I didn't have that choice I wouldn't be playing MMOs any longer.

 

The old generation of players have mostly moved on from our Everquest days and the new generation of players have grown up with solo-ability so they probably don't fathom how great it was.  The 30+ crowd is still a larger consumer of MMOs and you have to cater to where the money is.  I know I'm not the only 30+ that feels the same way (though I'm sure others will disagree).

Grats to Joel!  He deserves the chance after the massive amount of work he's done on TSW.

Their account support forum has thousands of posts about hackers, rollbacks, etc.. thousands and thousands of accounts hacked.

 

Their response to all of them.. "we don't have tools to restore anything."

 

For an MMO this is unacceptable.  I can't honestly defend any game, no matter how good, if they can't have basic customer support methods like character restoration for hacked accounts.

 

I like GW2, but what they did with my friend's account was amateur at best.

 

First, they allow you to change e-mail/password without confirmation (they actually send you an e-mail saying "This was changed, we hope it was you!").  They have no phone or e-mail support.  You have to tie your game account to your support account.

 

It took 2 days and 4 updates from them to get the account back in her hands.  In this time they asked the same questions 3 times (even though they were answered each time).  They wanted a CD Key which wasn't possible (because it was digital and the e-mail for the purchase was lost in a PC crash).  It was a massive undertaking and excercise in frustration to get them to do anything.

 

I hope they can fix it going forward.. there are some basic things they need to do like make let you dispute e-mail/password changes, allow you to re-send the IP security confirmation (many people never got the e-mail and there's no way to get it resent).  Simple things that should be priority.

I am not sure if you know this, but Guild Wars 2's system allows a person with enough money to exchange Gems for enough gold to level a character to 80 and fully gear them in exalted gear. This process would only take a few hours at most and of course that person would end up spending several hundreds of dollars (US).

 

Not as much as you'd think.  Buying Gems, changing to Gold and then buying crafting mats is a super fast and efficient way to easily level.

 

Most people don't buy the "P2W" argument with GW2 because they think only WvW matters.  Well if they think gold doensn't matter at all, they should look into how many mats you'd need to buy for that "cosmetic" Legendary gear.. because it's pretty sick.

What amazes me is THIS kind of silly stuff sets people off but those same people are okay ripping on game companies, wishing for developers to be homeless and for their dogs to get hit by cars.

Meh. I'm not sure that creating artificial scarcities is the best way to go about fixing this issue. Personally I think crafting in GW2 is far too easy as one toon can max all professions and gather all gatherable materials. I see trying to fix this by making crafting mat material sinks as a potential way to send the economy even more out of whack. For example look at the cooking changes. They took certain items off vendors and made them world drops, yet depending on the time of day I've seen two of these items (chocolate bars and butter) actually cheaper per unit on the TP then when they were vendor only.

The problem as I see it stems directly from A-nets choice to make every toon a jack of all trades, and making maxing all crafting professions, and gathering every mat node one can find, too desirable for everyone due to the outrageous amount of XP one gets from these activities.

 

I would agree except for the price it costs to do that.  I am working on 400 crafting in all professions and I've got Weaponsmithing and Artificing so far.  It costs me almost 40s each time I want to swap a profession out.  The price keeps growing as I get more and more crafting professions to max.

 

40 silver is a lot even at 80 just so I can swap between professions.  I certainly am not going to do it "on the fly."  I wonder what it'll look like when I get another one at 400.

There really isn't an economy when most items are at a set price because nobody wants them.

 

Not to mention Arenanet's "brilliant" idea to create temporary mystic forge recipes allowing players to combine 250-500 of a single item.

 

Their thought was "hey lets get rid of all these extra crafting mats!"  Unfortunately what ended up happening is all of the rich level 80s ended up buying those mats and driving the prices back up to almost the price of high level crafting mats.. leaving the average crafter wanting to buy mats screwed.

 

There are already tons of posts on their forums about it from upset players.

 

You can't have a free economy when you interfere with it.  EVE doesn't have devs going in and buying up mats to artificially inflate prices.  All you end up with a mess you didn't account for.

You really couldn't find anything to complain about in the economy?  How about the fact that Arenanet is clueless on economies?

 

For example a majority of items are selling at vendor price.  This wouldn't be so bad except for the 5% posting fee and the 10% sales tax when you sell it.  Most people are making less (if it sells at all since there are tens of thousands of the same item for sale).  There is no economy.. it's split heavily between max level players (who can make money on their mats/items) and everyone else.

 

Or their fact to help eliminate items screws over low level players? They added temporary mystic forge recipes that take 250-500 of an item to combine in the forge.. so rich people are buying low level crafting mats to throw into the forge, making low level crafting mats almost as expensive as high level crafting mats.

 

I'm not sure if you're only doing cooking or what, but you could talk about how crafted items are mostly junk and won't sell for near what it cost to make them.  The only weapons/armors that sell are those very specific ones or Exotic quality ones at skill 400.

 

Or the massive amounts of time (or money, good thing you can buy gold by turning Gems into in-game currency!) it takes to grind and grind and grind for crafting mats...

 

I think if you looked harder you could find some things to complain about.. but I get it, it's a new shiny game and it's hard to see all of the problems.

There is a 3 day trial you can play.  The game is not the same as it was at beta.

 

Why do people decide on games during beta?  TSW now is light years beyond even the last "open beta event" they had.

 

Judge a game on how it is now with a free trial.. not how it was during a beta or based on another game created 5 years ago.

4) Combat, just ridicoulus. Even AoC was better, more challenging and fun.

5) Fucom.........that should teach developers that players have a long memory. I didn't buy TSW because of the way they dealt with AoC launch.

 

If Funcom will not survive this, I won't be crying.

Developers need to take more risks and make MMOs for MMO players.......not single player games with MMO functions

Your points make it clear that you have never played TSW, yet you feel compelled to give reasons why the game is bad even if those reason aren't real.

I can tell you've obviously never played when you make the point about everyone looks the same.  Even standing in Agartha there is very, very rarely anyone who looks remotely the same thanks to the insane amount of clothing in the game.  As for facial/hair features, those are doubling with Issue 2.

I hate seeing people bash ANY game with reasons that are fake and saying they are true. You are diluding any rational discussion when you make untrue facts true.

I thought it was interesting that they were humble enough to know "questing" needs to change and to admit they didn't quite know the answer yet.

 

It'll most likely be some small company who comes in under the radar that'll really shake things up... like it used to be in the times where every new MMO was a no-name MMO company doing something new.

Not only are quest hubs alive and well, it's actually worse.  Now you have to WAIT for an "event" to happen in an area (or grind out heart quests which are just... a single quest).  I always love seeing my "hero" gathering rabit food, or yeti fur, or some other mundane task.

 

Please explain to me what's dead about the quest hub.  The events are exactly the same every time in the exact same order.  Yes, even at 80.  The "failed" events don't add as much variation as everyone seems to think.

 

Fortunately I was able to mostly level to 80 by exploring, gathering and crafting... but quest hubs dead?  No way.

 

Down leveling was a good idea until it's in practice.  It's still a challenge sure, but if I'm downleveled to 32 and I'm getting level 25 weapons what's the point?  I get much better XP, Karma and actual drops for my level by doing level appropriate content.

 

You just traded exclamation marks for hearts (or that little box icon to turn in picked up items).

What is your basis for this?  Ragnar specifically states that they plan to keep their monthly update schedule.

Fun com screwed me once on Age of Conan's launch. I gave them another chance. They messed it up again.

Frankly if you got "screwed" it was probably something you did because Funcom support in TSW is stellar.  I've had them do everything from restore lost items to advance broken quests.  Not once could they not help me with a legitimate problem with the game.

 

To the poster mentioning Beta weekends I totally agree.  The game wasn't the same at release as it was even during the last Beta Weekend.  Too many people used the beta as a preview/trial instead of a BETA.  I blame the industry on this.. using their BETA tests as "previews" instead of what a BETA actually IS.. a TEST of the game.

 

Any game that comes along and tries to use BETA tests for TESTING are going to be screwed in the current climate because everyone expect Beta to be a finished product (which isn't even the definition of BETA in the first place).

 

TSW deserved better.  It doesn't deserve trolls who hate Funcom and make it their daily mission to rip apart the game.  Yes they do exist, no it isn't fair.  Hate AoC if you want but it was done 5 years ago with a different team in a different time.

 

This rabid hate is an absolutely silly.  I have friends who won't go near MMOs because of the reputation that MMO players have of being elitist asses, trolls and jerks because that's what they see on forums.

 

The real problem with MMOs today is turning out to be the players.. the ones who are so jaded they make it a personal mission to destroy a company and the actual ability of other humans to feed their families.

I'm glad you like it, a lot of people do (myself included). Funcom's problem is getting people to buy the game, their subscription retention numbers were higher than expected for the first month.

 

Unfortunately it has a few problems that need to be ironed out.. but even with a near flawless launch some people won't give Funcom any slack or play their games.  Some players are so jaded by games release 5-10 years ago that they won't even give TSW a chance.. which is their choice, I just find it odd that people don't do that with other MMO companies (Funcom has released more MMOs than most other MMO companies with TSW, just a little fact :)).

 

Asking for reasons on this forum aren't going to get you accurate answers.  I've stopped responding to the trolls because they come by specifically to bash the game and bad mouth it.  A majority of whom never played it or played it during beta long before it's current state.  I guess a few TSW fans decided it was a good idea to post in the GW2 forums and that brought a lot of GW2 fans here to slaughter the game (easy to see when you note the posting history of the most hateful of the replies).

 

If you like the game that's what's important.  Find others who like it (likely in game or the official forums) or ask your friends to play it.  You can't get many fair opinions on MMORPG.com anymore (and I'm not just saying that about TSW because the most vocal people are those are angry with a game and they tend to migrate here).

 

I have no doubt I'll get some sort of random flame response but that just proves the point.
