This article could have been written about any MMO that's come out lately based on their pre-release hype.

HOW is ESO different from GW2 and other MMOs, though?  It seems like there is questing (you can wear a pirate costume, hurray.. doesn't make it monumental or unique though), exploring (whatever that means, it's a pretty broad term) and doing things "your way" (exact same goal with an optional path possibly?).

I don't understand why the hype for this is so high after all the games that keep burning people. I see very little "promised" that seems new or exciting. It sounds like Skyrim is being downgraded into an MMO.

So where is the innovation, creativity and industry shake up? When do we get those articles? Will we ever get them with this game, or is it just designed to be an MMO for MMO sake?

The saving grace of the crafting system is that you can start/finish jobs from the Gateway according to them... so you don't have to log constantly into the game, you can do it from the web.

Of course it's probably still designed to use Astral Diamonds (like everything else in the game).

I have to disagree that they "listened" to the players. The "skill buy system" is exactly like the old system except that you get to pick which order to buy skills. You still have the same lackluster skills as before which some are almost required to buy to meet requirements for the next rank.

If they had listened to players they would offer MORE abilities and not simply a different way of getting the ones you already had.

This game is not typical D&D it is more hybrid version of D&D game, and YES most of the things in game must be bought that makes this game expensive if you want full comodity. If i have to spend more then 13 euros a month to get basic things every other MMO have then i call that game B2W or just very expensive game to play.

You cant bring hard core D&D rules in a MMO cause most ppl will give up. Dont think that ppl behind this game are making game for fans of D&D only.

Simple, if you die in dungeon and i cant rez you or I have to spend real money to be able to do it has nothing with D&D rules it is just dumb so they can GTFO with the game no matter that i like it.

 Like WHAT?!?

You have said nothing to actually back up what you are saying, just spewing out uneducated opinions...

P.S. buying a flipping bag is not P2W...buying a sword of melt your faceoff is P2W.

Yes, you can...and they are. If not being able to rez is too hard for you, its ok, some of us like the idea of no chance for rez zergs and having to use actual skill to stay alive and be successful. There are a ton of hand holding MMOs out there already.

Or its D&D and you just dont like it and are acting like a child over it...last time I checked no D&D booklet talked about resurrections as being a normal, everyday thing, in a world where adventurers acted like they were gods becuase there was a cleric in the group that would just rez them if anything bad happened.

Death is absolutely normal in NW due to how Clerics don't heal anywhere near enough to keep someone alive.

Death in NW also means a 5-15 minute run back to your group, depending on if you died in an instance or the trash between you in the open world.

While no resurrection is an annoyance in an MMO, it's more the astral diamond thing that annoys me.  EVERYTHING costs astral diamonds.  I would rather pay a sub and just play the game, but I can calculate paying more than $15 a month if you play a lot.

It turned me off to NW altogether, cancelling my pre-order.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the new nickle and diming apsect of the Identifcation Scrolls being taken off the vendors for in-game silver and is now purchased at 800 Astral Diamonds each.

So spend Astral Diamonds, hope for an ID scroll to drop, wait for some free ones from your X level lockbox, or don't identify items.

Making players buy Zen and convert it into Astral Diamonds to buy Identify Scrolls that are basic game functionality is a pretty jerk move.

Everything in the game costs Astral Diamonds, from customizing armor (making my 20 chain tunic look like another chain tunic cost over 14,000 Astral Diamonds) to mounts, to training companions, to doing just about everything is a nickle and diming experience I've never encountered before.

Also kinda sucky that you have to buy resurrection scrolls from lack of any rez spell in the game so far..

They should be making things we WANT to buy, not HAVE to buy.

My favorite..

"We are spirits in the material world," said the radio voice. O sweetling, we have always seen you as ghosts drowning in hamburger.
I noticed it had about the same score as DK Online, does it mean it's about on that level?

You realize you can't build something from nothing, right? Mark already stated he doesn't want to have the game be invested by large companies. he wants the mmorpg to remain independent. For that he needs crowd funding along with the use of his own personal funds. All of this right here is to build up hype for a kickstarter. It's much better to lead into a kickstarter with previous momentum than it is to first pitch your concept with a kickstarter. He's generating interest for his game. If there is no interest then he will not go through making it. I think the reasoning behind that is obvious.

But why doesn't MMORPG do numerous articles and interviews with other games before they go to Kickstarter?

Are they going to be in the business of hyping games before they exist now?  The game didn't fit into their normal rules to list so they had to fit it into the caveat of "well we know him so.."

I understand marketing, but other games like Origins of Malu didn't get this much exposure while they were ON Kickstarter, let alone before it.. and they had a game to show already.

Just my opinion.

So they're going to figure out the engine and make the game and release it in 2 years? Isn't that cutting it kind of close for what they're trying to do?

I don't know how I feel about this game yet.  It's already listed as a game, yet doesn't even have an engine.  Is the "lot of excitement in the MMO space" because MMORPG keeps posting articles about a game concept?

Just saying, I don't think I've seen so much coverage of a "concept" without anything existing before. Are more games going to start doing a full out blizt on a concept before they ever go to Kickstarter now?  Are we going to see massive hypes and reviews and interviews for games before they're even funded?

A lot of people are forgetting the 750,000 Astral Diamonds that you get with the $200.

Normally you'll have to do invocations in-game (at a rest shrine every hour and get lucky to get 250-1500 astral diamonds), or you'll have to buy ZEN (PW currency) and trade them for Astral Diamonds via the interface in the game (it's a store, like in GW2, so the price will fluctuate based on demand).

Almost everything cosmetic or time saving costs Astral Diamonds.  This weekend, I changed the look of a chainmail tunic to look like another one and it cost almost 14,000 astral diamonds.

When you get level 20, your first mount is 1 gold in-game currency or a special one for 168,000 Astral Diamonds.  The training for the level 40 mount cost over 400,000 Astral Diamonds.  Level 60 mount training cost over 4 MILLION Astral Diamonds.  Level 60 special skin mounts cost 2 million+ Astral Diamonds.

The companions that were available (essentially pets that level up, you can equip and fight for you) cost 98,000 Astral Diamonds for a click item to get either a random Ghost or Hawk.

When you send a companion to train, it takes RL minutes depending on what level they are. You can spend Astral Diamonds to make their training instant.

And the biggest use of Astral Diamonds...

The in-game Auction House runs on Astral Diamonds and NOT the in-game gold/silver/copper currency.

This means if you find an item you want to sell on the auction hall, you post it for Astral Diamonds and not gold/silver/platinum.

As far as a game economy goes, those who spend money to get Astral Diamonds or the Founders are going to have a pretty good head start.  You can also trade Astral Diamonds for ZEN to buy stuff from the C-Store.

I have a feeling once inflation kicks in, equipment on the AH is going to be pretty expensive Astral Diamond wise and the best tradable equipment will be many thousands of Astral Diamonds.

So I guess after the free mount, the free companion, the other fluff and the Astral Diamonds it could well be worth over $500 of ZEN.

In case those neglecting FireFall beta are doing it because it's beta and they don't want to restart at release.. there is not going to be any more XP/character wipes.  Characters existing now will carry into release.

It's on their forums from a few months ago.

Just throwing that in there for those who don't know.

It was totally Funcom's fault because they knew about it as soon as it started.. however everyone was on vacation and nobody could fix it in time (I guess nobody can work remotely?)

Since it was their fault, they didn't punish the exploiters and rather said "sorry we screwed up with this" and gave everyone the items.

The whole event was poorly thought out unfortunately.. making grinding grindy grind events for the event items is almost as bad as making you buy them in a store.

Did everyone just go brain dead?   Don't you all remember why this game died?  It was full of exploit holes you could drop a truck through. There were no NPC's, no cities, no anything.   Remember how the developers asked you to be a "pioneer"?  Remember that?  Unless Turbine goes in and fixes the exploits and adds some actual soul to the game - it'll be the same mess it was when it launched back in 2002.

I dunno, my non-braindead logic center tells me that if they're opening what was previously a "release" game onto a "beta server" in a "beta state" they plan to fix and change the game.. which probably also means those exploits and broken things you are talking about.

The corpse is fresh out of the ground.  At least give them some time to pretty up before you hack it apart.

Seems like there's already some decent drama being stirred up around this game.

If I were a dev here I'd just ignore this forum, instead of letting myself be lured into flame wars and pointless arguments. Better to focus on the actual game (which sounds fucking amazing btw) and provide some hard proof of all these groundbreaking features, than to engage in the pvp - leave that to the players.

You guys have to accept that people are skeptical and that many won't be convinced by words alone. Many, many gamers (myself included) have been waiting on a game like this, but we have also been burned before by devs promising awesome stuff that never became a reality.

I'm not saying cos is a scam or vaporware, just that most sensible people will want to see more before jumping in with both feet.

I agree.

And especially when the answer to every question/concern is "go to look at the official website".

That's cool and all, but official sites are the most heavily moderated of any sites talking about a game, and are designed for a game to "put the best foot forward", i.e. marketing.

Which is fine, but don't expect people to take everything on there at face value. Most of us have seen plenty of "good demos" before, and that in itself means nothing.

Which does not mean the game is a scam, or bad, but there needs to be more before: 1. Getting remotely excited, and 2. Forking over any cash for a "pre-alpha", which does not seem like a good idea in the present MMO market.

I just wanted to point out that their forums have the least moderation out of any game forum I've seen.  The only person I can remember ever banned was Convo because he was making personal attacks on the CoS Team.

i personally put my money in, even if it has .00001% chance of being made.  I want this game and I have no reason not to believe them yet (I'm not jaded enough to believe that everyone is a crook yet).

Many others feel the same way.  I also personally would rather spend money helping fund this game than get milked for cash from ArenaNet in their Gem Store, or any other cash shop game that's already out and is complete crap.

I still have some hope in the industry, but it's starting to fade.  I do what I can personally... because I believe indies are the future of the industry and not the big money companies.

Everyone has their own opinion though.. and I don't go around flaming people in other game forums for their choices.  It's sad that most people can't do the same.

It looks like a video.  How can you say it looks like a great game?

I'm so tired of these videos that show nothing and then everyone is so enthralled by the pretty stuff that forget games are more about the animations.

Their site is completely void of any real information on the game.  I've seen enough "pretty" games that were complete crap to play, thanks.

I did research and to be honest your website is confusing and lacking proper information. The layout is poor and you're missing links to the appropriate pages.

If I can find problems like that from a preliminary search, that's a problem and I guarantee you I'm not the only one who sees those issues either. Perhaps you should spend more time fixing issues with your website and information layout instead of coming here and calling people trolls. It's very unprofessional, on both counts.

Just a thought.

Just a thought.

If you're going to say there are broken links, maybe you should tell where?  Or tell someone?  [mod edit]

Personally I've never seen a broken link, and nobody on the forums or the KS project has complained about broken links or "confusing and lacking information."

Maybe you're the one confused?

Did you even read what you quoted?

SPG games, like Wasteland 2 for instance, have a good chance of being decent games, considering what they raised and what it costs to do a smaller, likely text based title well. They even got more than they wanted/needed. TO make and release the game.

But MMOs are different.

This is the 2nd or 3rd to try to get an MMO kickstarted and the chance of any MMO going the kickstart route and end up being successful are slim, at best. It all comes down to the work that goes into making a technically good MMO, and that takes time and money to get right. Like 10X more than an SPG title. At least.

Do it wrong, and you get Mortal Online or any of a number of vaporware titles that never made it to release.

So then they get to alpha, and then what? They KS again to get to beta? If they can't get any interest from any investor/publisher, there is probably a reason.

I don't think KS is a bad idea in all cases, but KS and MMOs don't mix.

This seems an awful lot like throwing some money out there and hoping something comes of it, when there is not much of a plan to get the rest of the way.

I did read what I quoted, but you didn't answer my question.. but from your notes you haven't read into the project, what the money is for, or their future plans.

For the record, the 700k is a drop in the bucket, as they've always said.  They plan to get to Alpha with or without any funding.. the money is to get them there faster.  Time is money, and money donated to kick start (hence the site) the project towards Alpha faster is why they tried the site.

Obviously they didn't make the goal, but that doesn't make it vaporware.  Lots of other games failed KS and still released.  I don't see an MMO project different from another game.  I'm still getting stuff for helping get the game further along.

Their entire premise of KS (as they posted about this LONG before they EVER went to KS) was to get to Alpha, have all the major systems working and THEN go after publishers.  They aren't using KS because they can't find publishers.  They're using KS to finish their playable game before they look for one.

Other games (even MMOs) wanted money for their "tech demo" to take to publishers.  They wanted money to get to ALPHA and then go to publishers.  I see no difference in the two.

As someone who's been following the game since they came out of the shadows in 2008, they've been nothing but open and honest about EVERYTHING they've done.

But if you don't want to read the project, their site, their FAQ or anything that answers those questions you had.. well, at least here are a few others.

Back or don't back, that's up to you.  Calling people frauds or vaporware because YOU didn't take the time to research it is a bit unfair, isn't it?

Either way they said the game is being made.  Maybe further along you'll be interested.

Oh and btw..  DId you ever consider they read the raffle rule before they even put that up on kickstarter?  My contention from the start is they never actually intended to honor the raffle on Kickstarter.  They knew it would always be used to lure people back to their site in order to get public donations without a limit like the one set on KS..

There goes those pesky facts again.

The limit on donations is placed by Kickstarter, did you know that?  Do you know why?  Because when you invest in a company/project over $10,000 is has actual legal and tax implications.  This is why Kickstarter doesn't take over 10k donations.

If they're doing it on their crowd funding, they certaintly have that right... they aren't limited by Kickstarter's rules there.

You are looking for problems where no problems existed.

1. If you don't want to re-donate, just PM Jatar and get in the 2 raffles based on your Kickstarter donation. Done.

2. If you WANT to participate in the crowd funding (like many, many other games are doing now).. you can do so.  Not only do you get into the 2 original raffles, you get into a 3rd one they're talking about too.

3. There is no conspiracy. Take your tinfoil cap off.

My question is why are you so worked up?  Either you donated towards KS because you wanted to help the project and be in the raffle, or you donated just for the raffle... knowing you won't have to spend real money to get in and are now mad they asked you to come re-sign up by donating that same money on their crowd funding (even though the exception exists to just PM JATAR and get entered into the raffles without donating ANYTHING).. in essence, the second situation is really shady and they are even letting you be shady.. yet you're still upset.

As far as reading the rules, I'm sure they did.. maybe they missed it.  Google "kickstarter raffle" and see how many other projects used a raffle.  In this case, if you read the message Kickstarter sent that Jatar posted, they said someone brought it to their attention.. someone complained about the raffle so it would have to be cancelled.  I wonder if it was you at this point.

I'm just don't get your logic.  You say to think, but thinking through the facts (and not your emotional replies) leaves me at the same conclusion I had to start with...

Have you ran a Kickstarter project before?

I have.

You don't get e-mail addresses unless the project funds.  You can send private PMs, one at a time, to each person on the project, by drilling down into each reward... but the PMs are for Kickstarter, e-mails.

[mod edit]

By the way, his PM him still stands for anyone.. so it's not just "for you."  You just spent so much time posting negative posts they had to delete that you didn't give them a chance to respond (I was watching during the event, I saw the posts they eventually deleted... the way you treat people, I wouldn't have been as generous to you as Jatar was).

Considering the relatively high price of making anything resembling a decent MMO, I can't believe anyone is naive enough to "invest" in this game (or other MMOs frankly) and expect anything to come of it.

Which is not to say KS can't have its place: I think it is a perfectly good way to resurrect some of the "abandoned" SPG game franchises of the old days and give them another shot (Wasteland 2 being a prime example).

That said, any longtime MMO player knows what an underfunded indie MMO made by "hobbists" looks like: crap.

Maybe it is the "younger gaming generation" that are being targeted with stuff, because as an "older gamer" I am not even tempted to look at this and things like this. It is either going to fail miserably, or it is a straight up scam.

Kickstarting an MMO has virtually no chance of ending well.

Might as well burn that money in your fireplace.

Are you just ripping on them, or are you ripping on them after reading what the money is for?

The money is to get from their current point in pre-alpha to Alpha.

This is no different than any other game ever on Kickstarter.  Some games come to Kickstarter with nothing existing.  Some come in a pre-alpha state, some come close to release.

If you don't want to back it, great.. but at least read up on something before you take a stance.
